I think another issue with modern Choices releases is that for love interests in a sort of forbidden/reluctant lovers arc, a lot of the longing, pining, and tension is very artificial. Very cold and robotic. The angst exists but it’s not written well, nor is it compelling.

Kieran in TCH kidnaps the MC and keeps them at the moon court against their will, yet they yearn for them anyway because…horny??? To Kieran’s slight credit though, they do gradually become less of an asshole, though not by much, and certainly not enough to get the bad taste out that their previous behavior left. Then as the book progresses the MC, despite the persistent danger, uncertainty, and mental distress they face, actually start to genuinely care enough to risk their life to help them, but why? Why does the MC suddenly care so much for someone who, kidnapped, imprisoned, and even physically harmed them?

Shockingly enough, I do have a reasonable theory. I think the MC may be part bull because they charge full speed at those red flags without even a second thought.

Agent Gray from TPA, who I constantly criticize, is another shining example. Our MC also likes them because…horny. I think when there’s a poorly done love interest and you have to ask why the MC loves them so much, the answer is always going to be “because horny”.

Anyway, back on topic, Agent Gray and the MC also find themselves inexplicably head-over-heels for one another even though A. the MC is mourning the apparent loss of Rowan, who they had MILES more chemistry with, and B. Gray is…really aloof. Not in a charming way, either. No matter what the MC says or does, Gray acts like the MC has just stormed into a restaurant and purposely bellyflopped onto their table and fucked up their dinner.

Personally, if I were stuck with someone like Agent Gray in real life, I would try to get the hell away from them. I wouldn’t want to work with them, I wouldn’t want to be their friend, and I sure as hell wouldn’t want to fuck them or date them. Like, please do not be pissed at me for insert random ass reason here. But somehow, even though Gray is constantly annoyed by us, they’re somehow super thirsty for us anyway and there’s always sexual tension which, to be quite honest, feels fake as shit.

And of course there’s Kit Jackson, the blandest cowperson in the west introduced in Untameable. From the get go, like a lot of the other poorly done reluctant love interests, there’s a mutual attraction between Kit and the MC which goes no further than carnal desire rather than actual fleshed-out and realistic companionship and mutual respect. They both constantly have to tiptoe around the MC’s sexist, insecure, obnoxious brother because apparently he matters enough to have some say in their relationship even though it’s none of his goddamn business.

Not that the relationship is anything to write home about, of course. As I said, their relationship is fueled primarily on lust and promise of sex. Any sexual tension that emerges in the story is laid on so thick it loses any meaning and appeal. It doesn’t help that we “tame” Kit, as if they’re a wild animal and not a person.

And who could forget Reagan Thorne, our creepy, lecherous, perpetually moody and disgruntled billionaire lawyer. This is definitely a forbidden/reluctant romance, but Reagan takes it a little further than most of the others. They inject themselves into our vulnerable, recently separated MC’s life and manage to have some level of control over all of it. Clothes, work, social life, hell, even her HOME was given to her by Reagan under their adamant insistence.

But somewhere along the way, Reagan can’t hold back in the name of their lawyer-client relationship and lets themself “fall” for the MC. Rather, they “fall” for the MC because she’s vulnerable, sweet, innocent, and other similar connotations used in the book and dialogue. Reagan’s reluctant lover route is a pretty textbook definition of the word “predatory”.

So while the forbidden/reluctant lovers archetype can be a veritable goldmine, PB’s recent iterations of it have been bland, confusing, unrealistic, and even exploitative. And I suppose that’s just one more of the many reasons Choices has become more and more disappointing in more recent times.

Not really a holiday tradition per se, but since their wedding anniversary is on Dec. 17, one of their favorite things they do each year is celebrate their anniversary lol

This year (2023, so ig last year now oops) they got their second kitty, Burrito, to celebrate their first anniversary!!

They also go on a ski trip every year during the week between Christmas and New Year's to celebrate the holidays

Each year they spend the holidays with one of their families (they switch off which family each year)

They also spend a lot of time in their cabin in the woods in Washington state in the winter when one of them misses the snow

One of Jackie's favorite traditions is to get together with their friends and have a movie marathon of all the holiday movies any of them have worked on (Chadley has 100% been the love interest in a Hallmark movie before)

Kit x Jules

One of their favorite holiday traditions is go into town and get hot cocoa and walk around looking at the lights and decorations

They usually go into a few local shops to do some Christmas shopping as well

They also gather around the fireplace on Christmas Eve and Jules plays Christmas carols on his guitar and sings

And ofc Kit cooks Christmas dinner every year lol

'Chapters 16 and 17 really just reinforce my earlier confession about how weak of a story Untameable is.

Where to start? How about Austin not trusting Kit to be loyal because "they're a player"? The writers clearly never heard of "show don't tell" because Kit being a player is only shown in like 2 scenes ever rather than being a recurring character trait.

And frankly, I do get Austin being infantilizing and overprotective, and I wouldn't mind a plot about the older brother trying to protect his younger sibling from getting their heart broken by a player. The problem is that they try to market this as a "forbidden romance" when there are literally zero stakes to it besides the jerkass of an older brother going apeshit.

Austin quite literally throws a temper tantrum when he catches MC and Kit. He complains that MC "betrayed" him and that MC and Kit being together affects the ranch- but one question: HOW!? Apparently it... distracts from the work they need to do on the ranch? What a weak-ass reason.

Again, TNA works because there are actual stakes that make MC and Sam's relationship actually "forbidden". Sam is an engaged celebrity CEO, said engagement being done for business reasons. Having Sam get caught banging someone else = a loss for the company + Sam gets a bad reputation. People are rightfully shocked and upset when Sam and MC's affair is revealed.

Kit, on the other hand, may be a celebrity, but is not engaged or already in a relationship. Any romance that Kit or MC gets involved has zero inherent connection to the ranch. The only thing in their way is Austin being infantilizing and overprotective and wanting to prevent his little sibling from potentially getting their heart broken by a player- which is not a recurring character trait in the story.

Screw this story. It's either just completely boring, or annoyingly weak and trying to force an overprotective brother story as a forbidden romance. I'd be upset that it's getting a sequel, but on the bright side, it's gonna be on a different romance, so at least there's some hope there.'

When I really think about it, I think Untamable is my most hated Choices book of all time. Even more than Witness and MTFL.

I mean, at least Witness was hilariously and memorably terrible. At least MTFL had some redeeming qualities that give it (wasted) potential. They're books where we remember how bad they are and we kinda love to hate them.

But there's nothing that makes Untameable uniquely memorable or worth saving. It's just forced high stakes, false forbidden romance, and a whole lot of boring when it's not being aggravating. I can't even care about how wlm-coded it supposedly is because the story is trash no matter which kind of route you do.

Kit isn't truly characterized as a player or as someone that Austin would understandably be protecting from, and MC and Kit's relationship has zero effect on the ranch despite what Austin says. Literally the only thing that happened when MC and Kit were found out was Austin throwing a temper tantrum that is so childish it makes Caillou look like a sophisticated Nobel Peace Prize winner.

And Kit is easily the blandest LI of all LIs. I'm someone who doesn't find most customizable LIs to be all completely devoid of character, but Kit is the exception to that. They are the textbook definition of an "empty customizable LI", and it makes my head feel empty to try and remember anything unique or memorable about this character.

There's no bad that we can make fun of, just bad that we can rant about.
