95th Academy Awards nominations reaction

I got up early this morning, typed some of these just after the nominations came out, and left it sitting in the drafts. Some personal reactions from me about today’s nominees:

Of the ten Best Picture nominees, I have seen five of them. This is the furthest ahead I’ve been at this point in awards season since 2019 (Avatar 2, Banshees, Elvis, EEAAO, Fabelmans). I do have my work cut out for me here. As of right now, I’m pretty much on the EEAAO train, but perhaps not as energetically as I’ve been for other movies in previous years. Partly due to the fact I can understand why people might dislike EEAAO intensely and partly because there are no 9/10 or 10/10 movies for me from 2022. At least from those I’ve seen. Fabelmans my second choice from those I’ve seen.

And now I have to watch two Top Gun movies. I’ve been avoiding the first for a long, long time having heard way too much about it and people saying it’s just not gonna be my thing. We’ll see over the next month.

Whoa. Where did Triangle of Sadness come from with both Picture and Director? That movie was divisive in some parts, and I’ve heard that it felt like an overlong lecture. The directors’ branch gonna directors’ branch, though - they always nominate one director out of left field. And this year, Ruben Östlund was that man.

Say it with me: in the Year of Our Lord, Anno Domini MMXXIII, we take Steven Spielberg and John Williams for granted. I think Spielberg has a shot at Director (and, as of this moment if I was a member of the Academy, I might just vote for him) and John gets his record-extending 53rd nomination (behind Walt Disney’s 59, and most by a living person). John’s count of five total Oscars (having last won 30 years ago) is too low. But the Academy members, I think, I have Oscar winners’ envy. John also becomes the oldest Academy Award nominee ever.

In any case, the other Original Score nominees this year are amelodic electronic background noise. Where is Simon Franglen for Avatar? Alexandre Desplat for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio?

All Quiet overperformed here, compared to what I expected. I know its haul of 14 BAFTA nominations was ridiculous, but I chalked that up to WWI being more prominent than in the U.S. - where most people don’t think about it much at all. I’ve not seen it, but I must say I have a lot of admiration for the 1930 original that won Best Picture. That All Quiet was the first sound masterpiece at a time when the silent-to-sound transition was still going on. I’m not sure how this one will stack up, having heard about some of the narrative changes they made to it.

Despite what has been widely reported, Michelle Yeoh becomes the second Best Actress nominee of Asian descent since Merle Oberon for The Dark Angel (1935). Oberon had to hide her Indian and Maori heritage due to safety reasons and we didn’t learn about this until after her death.

Also overjoyed to see Nighy, Michelle Williams, Ke Huy Quan, Hong Chau, and Stephanie Hsu all in the mix for acting. Best Actor features five first-time nominees for the first time in 88 years. Also, that’s four actors of Asian descent getting nominations! That’s a record!

Cartoon Saloon finally has the first blemish on their Academy Award nominations record. They were previously nominated for all of their movies - The Secret of Kells (2009), Song of the Sea (2014), The Breadwinner (2017), and Wolfwalkers (2020; which should have beaten Soul). My Father’s Dragon (2022) definitely was their weakest movie yet and, yeah, that didn’t deserve to be here. Hoping to see a return to form for the Kilkenny-based studio. You’ve got to think GdT’s Pinocchio now. No contest. I need to check out The Sea Beast, though.

What happened to RRR? Original Song only? Not a movie I’ve seen because I insist on watching it in the original Telugu, but my sense was that there was a divide in how it was received. In the West, with critics and audiences having very little idea about the nature of Indian cinema and its history, it was something different and refreshing and was well-received. In India, its use of Hindu iconography struck a chord of Modi-esque Hindu nationalism that has muted critical plaudits there. It’s an interesting dynamic, one that I doubt Westerners picked up at all.

I am so excited to see the short films, as always (and I write up on them too, you can see last year’s edition for Animated Short here). Those last two Animated Short nominees though? My Year of Dicks (not people named Richard, afaik) and An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It? What titles. Can’t wait! As I understand it, no major American studios were in play for Animated Short at the shortlist stage. So this should be a fun, independent filmmaker-driven slate.

The Batman should have found its way into cinematography.

Never count Diane Warren out for Original Song, no matter how obscure the movie! She’ll, of course, lose - as she unfortunately always does. 14 nominations for Warren. Glad she picked up the Honorary Oscar last year, though.

Lots of clamor about the decision to leave Decision to Leave out in International Feature. But the International Feature branch usually does very funny things, and I don’t think there has been a consensus at all in this category. All Quiet the odds-on favorite due to its significant haul of nominations, however.

Well, this should be a fun month! On this blog, “31 Days of Oscar” - my marathon based on Turner Classic Movies’ (TCM) marathon of the same name featuring only Oscar nominees and Honorary Oscar winners through the 95 years of Oscar history - is coming on March 1st!

197 - Downsizing

And we’re back to your regularly scheduled episodes! This week, we return to our non-EW episodes with one of the more divisive high-profile bombs in recent years, 2017′s Downsizing. A globalization satire from Alexander Payne and his Sideways co-writer Jim Taylor, the film follows an everyman played by Matt Damon who decides to join the masses deciding to shrink themselves for the sake of green initiatives and a little outsized wealth. The film ran the 2017 fall festival gamut, opening the Venice Film Festival to raves only to see increasingly negative receptions at Telluride and Toronto. In the long wait to its eventual Christmastime release, the negative perceptions settled in and the film became a box office bomb.

By Oscar time, its biggest chances lied in the supporting turn from SAG, Globe, and Critics’ Choice nominee Hong Chau as a political activist forced into downsized life as punishment. This episode, we’ll be talking about the 2017 Supporting Actress race and how she was shut out at the last minute. We’ll also discuss Damon’s constant foot-in-mouth syndrome, 8 Kinds of F*cks, and the National Board of Review’s Top Ten Films of 2017.

'La Diva del Bronx' es "quemada" por los cibernautas a causa de un acto grosero que tuvo en 2017 Bárbara Chirino En las últimas horas, la cantante estadounidense Jennifer López ha estado en boca de todos luego de que saliera a colación un video en el que se comporta bastante grosera con su asistente, lo que causó que el mundo se fuera en su contra. Aunque el hecho sucedió en el año 2017, los internautas quisieron recordarlo y volver a darle palo a la artista. En las imágenes se ve a López llamar a su empleada y cuando esta le extiende su mano, la artista retira su chicle de una manera muy inusual, escupiendo la mano de la chica que sostenía una servilleta. Esto sucedió mientras la también actriz grababa sus escenas para la película "Second Act". Pese a que muchos alegan que esta práctica es muy recurrente en los famosos, otros no aceptan este tipo de conducta y no tardaron en criticarla, llamándola grosera, déspota y tachando el suceso como una "humillación". La asistente contó su versión Para calmar las aguas, la chica que se identificó como la ayudante de JLo, habló en X sobre lo que realmente había sucedido. "Jen suele masticar chicle antes de las escenas por respeto a sus compañeros de trabajo. Así que siempre tenía servilletas y pañuelos a mano para ayudarla a desecharlos fácilmente", dijo. Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos’s New Film: Here’s What We Know

Get ready for another dose of Lanthimos weirdness with a sprinkle of Emma Stone charm! Hot off the heels of their Oscar success with "Poor Things," the dynamic duo of director Yorgos Lanthimos and actress Emma Stone are teaming up for a brand new project titled "Kinds of Kindness." A Trip Down Collaboration Lane Just a few short days after the success of Poor Things at the Oscars, with 11 nominations and 4 wins, the actor-director duo Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos are back at it again with a brand new feature. The upcoming film, Kinds of Kindness, is said to be the pair’s 5th overall collaboration, including hit and critically acclaimed features The Favorite (2018) and Poor Things (2023). They’ve also worked together on the 2022 short film, Bleat.  If that wasn’t enough, talks about a potential 6th collaboration are underway too. Lanthimos wishes to remake the South Korean comedy film, Save the Green Planet (2003), with Stone in a supporting role.  An Ensemble Cast Kinds of Kindness will be starring Emma Stone, who has won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, recently for Poor Things’ Bella Baxter and her first one for La La Land’s (2016) Mia Dolan.  Poor Things co-stars Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, along with Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer will share the screen with Stone. Joe Alwyn, The Favorite co-star, will also be a part of this dream cast.  What is the Movie About?  The plot of Kinds of Kindness is still under wraps. However, during an interview with the Guardian in December 2023, the Greek mastermind gave a teaser as to what the film could be about.  The story was authored by Efthimis Filippou, who has worked with Lanthimos in The Lobster (2015) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017).  Its filming began in 2022 in New Orleans.  Previously titled And, Kinds of Kindness is an anthology film, consisting of 3 different stories. Currently in the editing phase, Kinds of Kindness is a contemporary film. Each actor will play a different role in each story. Moreover, Searchlight Pictures, the main distributor of the film, announced that Kinds of Kindness would be a contemporary, sci-fi anthology film.  Yorgos Lanthimos is notorious for keeping things hush-hush, all the while throwing the most complex and quirky hint bombs. We’ll just have to wait and see how eccentric and unique the feature will be.  Release Date – Perfect Timing?  Kinds of Kindness will be released on 21st June 2024. Produced by Andrew Lowe and Kasia Malipan, Kinds of Kindness is rumored to be going to Cannes. This makes it Lanthimos’s 2nd contemporary film to be premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, after The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017). Previously, Lanthimos’s films The Favorite (2018) and Poor Things (2023) made it to respective Venice Film Festivals.  Overall, Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have indeed formed a successful working relationship in the box office realm. La fiesta de 15 años es algo que no pocas familias sueñan y se sacrifican por ella. Entonces, si le compras el vestido a ru sobrina y te lo olvidas arriba del tren, te queres morir... Por suerte, en el Roca labura una persona honesta que decidió ubicar a la dueña y entregárselo en la estación Bosques. Acá te contamos quien es esa gran persona: Jorge Javier Ullua. "Hoy nos pasó algo insólito, pasamos los peores 30 min de angustia. Fuimos a retirar el tan soñado vestido de 15 años de mi sobrina Sofia cuando volvíamos de Once, nos tomamos el tren vía bosques y bajamos en Ezpeleta. Al bajar del tren nos dimos cuenta que dejamos la caja con el vestido. Inmediatamente entre tanta desesperación fuimos a la boletería a contar lo ocurrido y dar aviso para que en las próximas estaciones revisaran el tren. Mientras el tren culminaba su recorrido en las estaciones las noticias eran malas. Nadie dejaba el vestido ni daba aviso de haberlo encontrado y el control del tren no lo veían en el vagón que habíamos indicado", cuenta Gaby Sotto en su perfil de Facebook y agrega "Cuando el tren llega a Bosques nos dan la noticia de un vendedor ambulante Jorge Javier Ullua encontró el paquete con el vestido y lo dejó en la estación y esperó a que mi hermana fuera a buscarlo!! Y, es que para él, El Roca es algo más que unas formaciones de lata; pero, no los aburro más con mi bla bla y les dejo esta entrevista que le hiciera en el 2021 para que uds mismos lo conozcan: - ¿Quien es Matias Ullua y cómo está compuesta su familia? -Mi Nombre Jorge Javier Ullua. Conocido como Matías (mi apodo). Tengo 40 años y estoy casado con Luisa a quien conoci hace 23 años y es madre de mis tres hijos: Ludmila (21) Velentina (12) y Nehemias (2). Soy abuelo de Eliseo de dos añitos, también. -¿En qué barrio vivís? -Vivo en Bosques Norte desde que nací. -¿Cómo es un día de trabajo en tu vida? -Trabajo de vender ambulante en los trenes Roca. Mi recorrido es de Florencio Varela a Ranelagh. Hoy en día trabajo 12 horas para poder ganar el sustento para mi familia. -¿Hace cuánto te dedicas a esto? -Soy vendedor desde el año 1999. -¿Qué cosas positivas te ha dado tu trabajo y qué negativas? -Cosas positivas: amigos, hermanos de la vida, y también que gracias a vender en los trenes jamás faltó el alimento en mi mesa. Negativas: haber conocido las drogas en un tipo hace muchos años atrás por las cuales hasta mi familia había perdido; pero, gracias a Dios, pude recuperarme y ser libre de la esclavitud de las drogas. Ya llevo 15 años sin consumir . -¿Deseaste alguna vez trabajar de otra cosa? -Siempre se desea trabajar en un lugar en blanco por los beneficios. De echo, en 2015 tuve la oportunidad de trabajar en una fábrica de calzado en Extreme Gear (Adidas) hasta el 2017 pero gracias al gobierno anterior (Cambiemos) que por abrir las importaciones la firma se fue del país y chau, sin trabajo en blanco. Mi única opción fue volver a caminar los trenes con una caja en los brazos. -Contamos un hecho que hayas visto mientras trabajabas y no puedas sacarlo de tu cabeza... -Recuerdo una vez, ya hace muchos años, a la altura del puente provincial en Zeballos estábamos vendiendo yendo desde Bosques y el tren freno de golpe. Bajamos todos a ver qué había pasado y nos encontramos con que el tren había a atropellado a un nene de no más de 8 años. Era de unas de las casa de al lado de las vías... ver a su padre desesperado, sacándolo, cargándolo en sus brazos, desesperaso, pidiendo auxilio... Esa imagen no me la voy a olvidar jamas. De echo, después de presenciar aquel accidente, jamás mire otro que se haya dado mientras yo iba en el tren y eso que fueron varios más; pero nunca más me animé a mirar. Siempre le decía a mi esposa,y le digo: cada vez que vayas a la estación, mirá bien para ambos lados. -¿Cómo cambio tu vida la pandemia? -La pandemia, creo yo, que cambió la vida de todos. En la mía, especialmente, fue difícil; pero le doy gracias a Dios que nunca nos faltó de comer. -La cuarentena estricta, ¿cómo la viviste? -La vivi, los primeros 3 meses, encerrado sin salir a los trenes: una que no viajaba casi nadie y otra, la policía no te dejaba trabajar. Pero tuve que reinventarme: vendí en los grupos de Facebook más en uno que es solo de mujeres de acá el barrio donde se entregaba en la plaza, pero al ser solo de mujeres publicaba lo que vendía desde el Facebook de mi hija Ludmy... casi siempre golosinas. Vendí también guantes de invierno y otras cositas que me habían quedado de un kiosco que tuve alguna vez. Después, también vendimos a kioscos con mi amigo Gustavo alias "Chasqui" que también vende en los trenes... hasta en la ferias salimos a vender. Pero bueno, hoy, en la actualidad sigo vendiendo en los trenes. Será hasta que Dios diga o tenga algo mucho mejor para mí... pero siempre dije y digo que ser vendedor ambulante o busca, como es el rótulo de la calle, es un trabajo en fin. 30 years after landing her first Academy Award nomination for bringing the life story of Rock Queen Tina Turner to the big screen in ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?,’ legendary film and television actress Angela Bassett was expected to finally capture her first OSCAR at the event’s 95th annual ceremony Sunday (March 12).

Much to the surprise of viewers at home, she went home empty-handed.

Bassett had long been considered a frontrunner for the year’s Best Supporting Actress Academy Award given her victory laps at the season’s Golden Globes, NAACP Image Awards, Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, and others thanks to her captivating performance as “Queen Ramonda” in 2022’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.’

However, her lap ended at Sunday night when she and fellow nominees Hong Chau, Kerry Condon, and Stephanie Hsu were defeated by Jamie Lee Curtis for the golden statuette.  The upset was particularly bittersweet as last year’s winner, Ariana DeBose, presented the award – leaving most to expect the 64-year-old would win given the popularization of the phrase “Angela Bassett did the thing.”

Despite the loss, Angela still remains in Academy Award history books for being the first performer nominated for a Marvel role.

She was set to join an exclusive club of Black Best Supporting Actress winners that includes Hattie McDaniel (1940), Whoopi Goldberg (1991), Jennifer Hudson (2007), Mo’Nique (2010), Octavia Spencer (2012), Lupita Nyong’o (2014), Viola Davis (2017), Regina King (2019), and Ariana DeBose (2022).

Alas, she will have to wait another year.
