happy (late) halloween omg ace! i am so glad to see we are all in shambles over the halloween show i swear matty chose violence (quite literally) with the patrick bateman costume like..... will instantly be imprisoned if I voiced my thoughts about those photos bye-
also the halloween blurb???????? mainly just sending this to scream ab how it literally killed me bye this is so stupid but it instantly made me so happy to read after work and oh i am weepy and weak at the idea of annie masterminding a group costume 😭 even the simplest or ur writings i absolutely adore (still not over the massive list of pre reader dad matty blurbs oh that made my DAY i tell u...)
can we just.... the idea of annie begging u to join them trick or treating,,,, and reader meeting mayhem and mayhem holding the candy bucket in his mouth while annie shows u how well she can walk the 'massive horse dog' 😭😭 and the way u just fit in their unit together so well... oh matty absolutely can feel his heart bursting at the sight gn (and also u getting mistaken for being annies mom/his wife multiple times and the way he just cannot handle how oddly right it feels.... bye!)
(bff anon hopes ur doing better ace! just know basically anything u post..... ive basically read bye need to stop lurking like an insane person 💀 xx)
HAPPY VERY LATE HALLOWEEN!!! It is my fault this is so late, I just couldn't stop talking… are we shocked tho? Jail is calling my name with some of the things I said in dms… let alone my thoughts FUCKING HELL. it was too good-
Stop I'm so glad you liked it, I just love them on Halloween so much. The fact that it made you happy after work actually just added 20 years to my life I'm so glad!!!! I made your day?!?!? Please I'm gonna vomit. You are so sweet and kind. Those ideas were all so fucking good, a google doc has been created bc I loved them so much. You are a genius truly.
Literally, this idea has been living in my mind rent-free in my mind ever since you sent it. MAYHEM HOLDING THE BUCKET YOU'RE KIDDING. Any mayhem content and I am obsessed (hence the mayhem reference in the actual fic), but this image has me sobbing.
(lots more insanity below the cut)
I am gonna alter what you said so slightly bc teacher girlie is PROFESSIONAL and she has work/life boundaries… sometimes… let's say Annie does BEG you to come trick or treating with them and you have to break it to her that you definitely cannot do that but you hope she has the best time ever. “But miss y/n I want you to meet my doggy, he's coming with us. He's gonna be scooby doo! My daddy is shaggy, and I’m Daphne. He's trying to get my uncle George to be Fred, but he wants to have a party with my auntie Charli. They are gonna be-” You have to cut in before Annie gives you a detailed list of everyone she knows costumes (but also, isn't the Scooby gang iconic for them all?!).
You, of course, have a pumpkin out and are waiting for trick-or-treaters and have the full-size chocolate bars because you always wanted to be that house. A knock at your door happens, and you come running to it in your Wizard of Oz costume. Who is behind that door but the whole Healy family? Matty just makes a noise of shock that he later over-thinks massively, “but Ross, it was such a weird noise. I basically choke-coughed at her. No stop laughing-” Ross eventually assures Matty you didn't notice.
You did and later tease him about it when you finally get together, “I swear I had to actually bite the inside of my cheek to not laugh, it was so ridiculous” and Matty is like “Can you blame me?? You were in that cute little dress, and you had those plaits with the bows on the end. You were asking me to choke on thin air when you dress like that, sweetheart.” And you're like… “well I think I still have that costume in my wardrobe upstairs if you'd be interested in-”. Immediately, his face lights up, “WHICH ONE? THE BIG WARDROBE OR THE SMALL ONE?” he shouts whilst dragging you up the stairs as you giggle uncontrollably.
Anyway, sorry I got distracted, HALLOWEEN! They're reasonably late in the night, and somehow Matty gatherers himself enough to talk to you, “ohmygod hi!” he says and awkwardly waves, another moment he thinks about far too often (“Why couldn't I do anything normal around you.” and you reassure him “dont worry, babe. it was cute, I swear”)
Annie perks up and shows you mayhem who just adores you, wagging his tail and you bend down to his level and he's licking all over your face and you just can't stop laughing, matty is mortified. “Oh god y/n I’m so sorry he isn't normally this friendly, very weird actually… but please just- oh mayhem please can you stop-” and he's tugging at the lead trying not to die of embarrassment.
You insist it is fine, and Annie begs you to walk him “Just for a little bit miss y/n! Because then you can see how strong he is and then how strong I am because I walk him all by myself” This comment has you looking at Matty behind her who just shakes his head, confirming that this, in fact, is not true and just another Annie exaggeration.
You agree, grab your bag and come to walk with them for a bit, only after confirming with Matty about 30 times that it's really okay, “are you sure I do not want to intrude” you ask and Matty just dies at your kind eyes looking up at him whilst cuddling mayhem.
“Of course! I'm sure Dorothy would be good friends with the Scooby gang. Please, walk with us” and he offers his hand to pull you up. It's the first time you've really touched, and god, the spark flying thing may seem like a fairytale, but you both swear in that moment that you actually get a shock from the touch. Of course, his hand lingers a little longer than necessary as you stare at each other just vaguely holding hands. Your brain catches up, and you start moving, but god, you wish that moment could've dragged on forever, as does Matty.
As soon as you and Matty get properly talking, you end up walking with them for a longgg time. One house in particular though makes a mistake that lives on in infamy in your relationship in the future.
“oh god, that one house that thought we were together, that moment was on replay in my head for weeks after. The idea that someone else could see us together just confirmed to me I was head over heels for you, and then sadly solidified that it couldn't happen after you corrected her and I was sharply reminded you were my daughter's teacher”
Maybe it's an older woman who opens the door and jumps at mayhem originally but is soon cooing over him and giving him milk bones, “What a pretty boy” and Annie is giggling and telling the woman all about her “horse dog” (nice reference btw bff anon I love u).
Soon, she looks up and actually addresses you and Matty, “Sorry! You must be mum and dad. What a lovely little girl you've raised, and what a beautiful couple you are! Reminds me of me and my husband, constantly talking and laughing” You and matty just stand there open-mouthed like fish for a good few seconds. Annie is, of course, laughing hysterically. You both stutter out explanations, “Oh no-” “Oh I'm actually her teacher. It's a funny story so they knocked and i was like-” Of course, the woman apologised profusely, but the comment haunts you and Matty for WEEKS.
Perhaps a few more people coo at your “lovely family” and perhaps you just… stop correcting them…
Cut to Matty talking to himself (and mayhem) at 3 a.m. in the kitchen whilst making tea, “No it's totally normal people thought that. Man + woman + child + dog = family. and so what we stopped correcting them?? That's normal too… We just got sick of it. And it's also fine that it made me feel weird. It was a weird situation. Anyone would get butterflies at someone saying they're a nice couple. Right, mayhem?” and Mayhem somehow gives him a look that says “Really?” and Matty sighs and nods.
I think this might be the moment he goes “fuck.” and realises he really does like you. And he just… freaks out. Calls Ross and talks a million miles an hour.
I'M SO SORRY I LITERALLY CANT SHUT UP, WHEN WILL I STOP?!
I am doing much better and I literally cannot believe someone likes my bullshit enough to read my posts, I am genuinely obsessed with you?!?! KEEP LURKING I LOVE IT! I LOVE YOU!!!
blurb masterlist here!!

I need more people to be aware of Charlie and the Little Chocolate shop of horrors. It live completely rent free in my head. Nick doing as Bazooka Salt? Iconic. Dylan playing bazookas evil oomloompa denisr boyfriend? Amazing. Darren playing Charlie bucket, a 12 year old boy with a full beard that apparently goes to the floor? Innovative. The Fact that they lost 3000 dollars off of the kickstarter during that bit? Also iconic honestly

5 Book Recs Based on Your Favorite Nostalgic Halloween Movie!🎃
Tumblr media
I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite parts of October is watching all the classic spooky season movies I grew up with. It brings back all those fond memories of childhood fall festivities, Halloween costume planning, and the joy of filling up your candy bucket while trick-or-treating (even if you had to fight your mom about wearing a jacket with your costume because it was too cold). If you’re in the middle of your yearly Halloween movie binge or haven’t had time because of the hot new books dropping recently, here are some ghoulish book recommendations based on some of our favorite nostalgic Halloween movies!
If you like Hocus Pocus (1993), then you might like Dead Man’s Float
Tumblr media
While there might not be a big musical number led by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy in the middle of Dead Man’s Float, this story will surely leave you gasping for air. There is no doubt that Hocus Pocus is one of the most classic Halloween movies of all time, as the dubious Max unleashes the iconic Sanderson sisters to enact their revenge on Salem. Shawn Sarles' haunting YA horror novel follows this same hair-raising idea, except this time, a seemingly harmless prank unleashes a ghost with unfinished business and intent on finding its killer. If you’re in the mood for a more frightening version of the classic Hocus Pocus story, I recommend you start reading Dead Man’s Float now!
If you like Halloweentown (1998), then you might like Shadow Coven
Tumblr media
Halloweentown is well-known for its inclusion of literally all things Halloween and its empowering story of a young witch who will go to extreme lengths to save her family and the world from an evil power. Similarly, S. Isabelle’s second installment in The Witchery series, Shadow Coven, centers around a group of witches who must defeat magical and mundane threats to save themselves and their coven forever. While there might not be any friendly skeleton cab drivers, Shadow Coven includes some kick-butt witches just like Marnie and her family that will surely have you reaching for the spellbook this Halloween! Start reading now!
If you like Casper (1995), then you might like Sixteen Souls
Tumblr media
Casper the Friendly Ghost is a staple nostalgic character during the Halloween season. How could you not love the sweet and cute little ghost who falls for the girl who moves into the very mansion he’s haunting? Fans of the movie Casper will have no problem jumping into the spooky yet swoony YA debut Sixteen Souls by Rosie Talbot. This ghostly tale is about sixteen-year-old Charlie, who gets dragged into hunting down the cause behind the mysterious disappearances of several famous spirits by an irritating yet charming new ghost seer in town. Sixteen Souls is sure to give you chills, all while making your heart melt as Charlie must deal with his growing crush and work to save York’s spirits at the same time. Start reading Sixteen Souls now!
If you like Beetlejuice (1988), then you might like Beholder
Tumblr media
Whether you became a fan by watching the 1988 film with Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder or the quirky modern-day musical, there is no denying that Beetlejuice has cemented itself as one of the most iconic ghost stories of all time. While Ryan La Sala’s Beholder is much more mysterious and sinister than the joke-filled dark humor of Beetlejuice that we’re used to, both stories explore a world where dark, evil powers must be stopped before they have the chance to take over fully—one just comes in a pin-striped suit with green hair. Start reading BEHOLDER!
If you like Scooby Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost (1999), then you might like At the Speed of Lies
Tumblr media
It goes without saying that any Scooby-Doo! film or episode is a year-round classic. But during the Halloween season especially, there is something even more thrilling about watching the gang from Mystery Inc. kick some monster butt. This undefeatable group of friends is no stranger to solving their town’s mysteries; still, Quinn Calvet from Cindy L. Otis’ At the Speed of Lies certainly wasn’t expecting to get swept into the mystifying chaos of her town’s latest disappearances. Fans of Scooby-Doo! will love this modern twist on mystery solving that we’ve all grown to love, thanks to Velma, Daphne, Fred, Shaggy, and Scooby. And while Quinn might be well on her way to becoming the “it girl” of The Whine, her town’s growing social media platform, I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a shout-out to the original it girls–The Hex Girls from Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost. Start reading At the Speed of Lies!

West End vs Broadway CATCF Ultimate Showdown
I’m gonna pit the two musicals together and see who comes out on top
Almost Nearly Perfect vs Willy Wonka! Willy Wonka!
I like both of these songs and think they are both good at exposition dumping although they are on two different subjects. I think I’m going to go with Willy Wonka! Willy Wonka! Because I like the way it sets up Charlie to be a bit more than what he’s usually shown to be.
A Letter from Charlie Bucket
Very similar song between both versions. I think I have to go Broadway again even though he has two lines for his mother because his father was cut, but I still like it better.
More of Him to Love
For the third in a row I’m going Broadway but don’t expect the streak to last. There’s just something I like about this Augustus better than in the West End version.
When Veruca Says
West end, of course. There’s just something so British about Veruca Salt and I love this song.
The Double Bubble Duchess vs The Queen of Pop
I have affectionately nicknamed The Double Bubble Duchess the “autism song”. It took awhile to grow on me but I like it a lot better than Queen of Pop.
It’s Teavee Time! vs What could Possibly go Wrong?
What do you think the answer is? The British didn’t have the balls to write What Could Possibly go Wrong, their loss. 10/10
If Your Father Were Here vs If your Mother Were Here
If Your Mother Were Here is just, slightly better even though the song makes less sense than it does in the broadway version.
Doncha Pinch me Charlie vs I’ve got a Golden Ticket
Don’t have a strong opinion on either, both are good.
It Must be Believed to be Seen
Ah, the villain song. I gotta go West End on this one, I love it.
Strike that, Reverse it
Going West End again, I love the way Hodge interacts with the children.
Simply Second Nature vs Pure Imagination*
Going Pure Imagination here, it where it’s supposed to be and it’s just better than Simply Second Nature.
Auf Wiedersehen Augustus Gloop
Virtually the same, no opinion. Both are good.
Juicy! vs When Willy met Oompa
I don’t like either but I have to default the point to Juicy because it’s actually about Violet??
Verucas Nutcracker Suite
‘Nother point for Broadway here, it’s more thematic. Also absolutely metal, tearing a child limb from limb on live stage.
Vidiots
Hodge is iconic, again point to West End.
Pure Imagination vs The View from Here
Don’t particularly care, but I’m going to go The View From Here.
Surprisingly Broadway wins, although the West End soundtrack is longer and has songs I like but nothing to compare to. Until I tallied it up I was actually under the impression that I liked the West end one better, so this was a nice surprise.
What do you guys think?

Hi again! :) I just started to watch Scooby Doo and Guess Who today, and I love the concept of introducing celebs. I love it because its not new, it's a callback to the og episodes with sonny and Cher, and batman!
If the show hadn't been cancelled, who would you want to guest star? (I watched a clip of the gang meeting their voice actors and it made my day, I was feeling down. I only thought they would meet frank welker too so it was a really nice surprise!)

as i had promised before, finally im writing a post about my thoughts on catcf
sorry it's quite messed up, i'm gonna talk about a lot of things, compare the movie to the book and their takes on the characters and their fate. also i'd like to remind that it's all entirely subjective and based on my feelings only!! also i have seen the movie and read the book in russian translation so might have missed some details lost in translation. sorry if anything offends you, i didn't intend it and im open to discussions ,,,
AUGUSTUS GLOOP he didn't seem to have much time and personality both in the book and in the movie? wasn't his only character trait and only vice that he eats a lot? (my highest kin) what did he even do wrong? he was told that everything in the room was edible so he actually started eating everything? what a crime in the movie they tried to fix him or exactly make him worse and showed him being mean to charlie; but the oompaloompas don't criticize him for that but instead for being FAT AND STUPID!!!! i don't think he was that deserving his fate especially comparing him to other kids, but at the same time his punishment seemed the lightest? sure he was scared when he was sucked into the pipe, but in the end he seemed to be happy? he didn't end up that traumatized and even managed to enjoy some chocolate
VIOLET BEAUREGARD when i watched the movie for the first time, i wondered why her song shows her as a bad person not because of her competitiveness, arrogance or obsession with victory but.... for chewing too much gum?? the book gave me the answer to this question: book violet doesn't have almost any personality aside her chewing gum addiction; it was mentioned that she holds a record for chewing gum but it wasn't really emphasized? so i liked how they developed this part of violet in the movie making her obsessed with competitions and prizes, while leaving some details showing it's the pressure of her family which forced her to be like that. she's still a grotesque caricature supposed to be annoying but she's a much more colourful (?) and memorable character there imo.
VERUCA SALT such a cute and annoying at the same time spoiled material gurrrrl both in the movie and the book i love her portrayal sm. also i like how her song showcases that her parents are responsible for spoiling her and they share the same punishment and that episode in the movie when she befriended violet with a nasty smile . such an iconic moment i adored it
MIKE TEAVEE i adored him hes such a funny little brat!!! but his song with the whole "television bad books good" message is understandable in the book but when you hear it in a MOVIE youre watching ON THE TV that makes no sense btw i like how in the book they showcase the problem of parents who ignore their children and would rather let them spend all day in front of the tv than communicate with them. that implies mike has some family issues as well too bad it wasn't shown in the movie
WILLY WONKA book and movie versions of wonka are quite different but i love them both equally willy is such an amazing character :c book wonka seems to be just an easygoing guy in a constant silly goofy mood who actually cares about the children but just lets it slide as he knows they won't be harmed? movie wonka on the other hand seems more whimsy and cursed??? he appears creepy and threatening, with some sadistic vibes even, and behind his appearance of a funny eccentric mememan making cannibalism jokes, he hides SUFFERING and deep childhood traumas i liked how they made wonka's character more deep and dramatic, but the question is - does a character like him really need this tragic backstory? what does this twist add to the whole story? i shall return to this question a bit later
CHARLIE BUCKET book charlie is sweet but looks like he was supposed to be an unpersonalized character so that every reader could associate him with themselves... so hes a bit bland and lacks some individuality imo :c sure we see his generosity (hes willing to share his chocolate with his starving family) and kindness (he's worried about what will happen to other kids - i almost cannot remember that in the movies) but through the course of the plot he does almost nothing but feeling qUeEr fEeLinGs about the wonders of the factory and not getting himself into trouble in the book there's no problem in bringing all charlie's relatives to the factory - so he doesn't face the dilemma of leaving his family to become the heir of the factory or staying with his loved ones. but in the movie that's a major problem and a whole new plotline! we can see charlie's doubts and insecurity, wonka's contradictive feelings taking him over, find out the reasons behind wonka's rejection of family - and it's charlie who helps him. this plotline is even more important for charlie's character development rather than wonka: we see charlie in action, we see how caring he is, how much he is willing to sacrifice for his family, see his sincere desire to help wonka feel happier... the final scene gives such a warm feeling it sends me to tears,,,,, finally willy wonka is not alone...
FINAL THOUGHTS speaking about the message of the story? i felt that the book told that one must be kind and generous to reach happiness? the movie sure has that idea too but it's sorta more focused on the importance of family and not being alone?" once again im unsure about the book :c tbh as the protagonist doesn't have much of a personality and actions, it seemed to me at times that the message is one must be rule-following and not getting into trouble ?? also replace tv and chewing gum with youtube and idk energy drinks - and it can easily turn into a conservative pamphlet on how the new generation is bad and amoral - but it doesn't seem like one thanks to the genius of roald dahl!! his manner of writing and sense of humour is fantastic so in conclusion i prefer the movie to the book (for the first time in my life ahhahha) but idk if they're actually worth being compared ... and of course i don't think the book is worse or anything - it's just not really my cup of tea i guess? though i still enjoyed it a lot and had a great time reading it ^^
thank you for attention!!! if you think i was wrong in some aspects feel free to correct me ,, and once again id like to remind that it's not some kind of analysis just my personal thoughts and feelings and it may differ from yours have a nice day!

now that it's pretty late and less people are on here:
as we all know (if you've been here a minute), i prefer the 1971 adaptation of charlie and the chocolate factory to the 2005 one.
there are so many reasons for this i could write an essay. today, I'd like to focus on the characters themselves.
starting with charlie bucket, there isn't anything wrong with freddie highmore's portrayal. however, peter ostrum plays a charlie that connects better with the audience. he tends to make the audience want him to find a golden ticket, to win the prize. he comes off as a sweet kid who cares deeply for his family. he just wants something good to happen for himself and his family. i also think he and jack albertson (grandpa joe) do a grandfather-grandson in a very fun and believe way.
willy wonka: roald dahl wanted a brit for wonka. neither adaptation has that. I've never felt it was that big of a deal.
gene wilder's wonka is unnerving. however, he does it in a way that makes you question it, that makes the other characters question it. he seems outwardly to be fairly normal, if a bit eccentric. when he's really weird, it's a bit of a surprise. i will say, he's definitely a bit too sweet at the end perhaps.
depp's wonka is just weird. it's a wonder everyone didn't leave the minute they saw him. he talks like someone you should avoid like the plague. he doesn't lure anyone into a false sense of security at all. he might as well have a sign. also, his voice is uncomfortable to listen to and the dentist dad subplot is both really strange and really absurd. also, i think that there being a debate on whether charlie could take his family with him is equally strange and absurd. he's a kid. hello???
grandpa joe: i feel jack albertson does him better if only because he seems more grandfatherly to me. also, he does well with ostrum's charlie. 2005's grandpa joe is a bit forgettable. also, "I've got a golden ticket" is a lovely song and it has a slightly goofy but enjoyable scene to accompany it.
veruca salt: again, there's nothing wrong with 2005 here, as far as i can remember. however, i appreciate 1971 because while veruca is definitely bratty, she's somewhat good at faking a "sweet little girl" persona, which is highlighted in "i want it now." she loses her cool (because she is a kid) but is pretty quickly able to regain it. it explains why the salts act the way they do with her, in addition to being too spineless to discipline her. fave thing about 2005 though, the way that girl says "squirrel." I'll never forget that.
mr. salt: wh. why is 2005's like that? i don't like him. 1971's salt is at least a bit funny. "what business are you in, salt?" "nuts" is iconic. i only mentioned this parent because this one bugs me.
violet beauregarde: both are perfectly fine. i kinda dig 2005's peak 00s tracksuit. i will say, i think 1971's blueberry is better. it's more of a blueberry and less of a gigantic blue orange like 2005's. also i like practical effects.
augustus gloop: this character is a mess in general. however, i have some bones to pick with 2005 here. firstly, the fake red hair is ghastly. secondly, how come 1971 could get a real fat german kid and you couldn't? thirdly, what in the fuck is that intro scene? where are the gloops living? why does it look rat invested? jesus. i feel like he's more offensive. honestly 2005 is more offensive point blank.
mike teavee: so. this one's up to personal preference. both are good at what was being aimed for.
1971's mike is actually somewhat likable imo. he's not horrible. he's just a bit rambunctious and watches too much tv. he's very much a typical 11 year old boy. he should heed his mother but also, it's completely understandable that he'd see this cool contraption that could send people by television and want to use it. he's 11.
2005's is a very video game loving, destined to live and die in his mother's basement, calls you slurs on xbox live, little cunt. i would punt him into the sun. his vice isn't just that he watches to much tv, he's also a bigot and I'm upset because i had to hear the r slur while relooking these characters up. you know, this is the only 2000s media i ever heard that slur in. congrats burton, you've made a character that deserves the taffy puller.
oompa loompas: these characters are bad from the get go and I'm not the right person to speak on the race portion of it. the book is racist. whether this was better adapted by the 1971 one or 2005 one, if either, i have no right to say. as far as i can tell, 2005 leans more into the white savior narrative than 1971. feel free to weigh in on this portion if you'd like.
however, i think that it was better to have more than one person play the oompa loompas. 2005's one guy copypasted looks incredibly odd and takes away from the quality of the songs. it also takes away from the diversity that the 1971 oompa loompas have in height and body type and facial features. also, having more real people will always look better than editing one guy to be multiple guys.

I don’t think my grandmother was even that keen of cats.
A review of Somerset House's 'Cute' exhibition.

The Cute exhibition at Somerset House begins in a small pink room, and hanging on the wall we see what is also the start, but in this case of a global culture; the first cat memes captured by photographer Harry Pointer, dating back to 1872. Next to it, following the feline theme, there is a vast collection of 300 china cats inside a vitrine. It is Andy Holden’s ‘Cat-tharsis’ (2016). Playing on the headphones hanging underneath the glass cube, Andy talks about what this collection that his grandmother left to him after her passing, meant to his grandmother; how these cats gave her a sense of control, how she used them as a catalyst for the love within her. He also talks about what cats mean to our culture, to our history. He speaks on the UK economy, and how charity shops - the place where her grandmother collected a great number of these figures- might represent the avid mass-consumption of the British public caused by capitalism. An incredibly interesting and unexpected piece on culture and grief, which a quote from, names the title of this text.
If there is a country knows how to do cute, it is Japan. With a whole room dedicated to Japanese vintage illustrations and art, we can see how these drawings were used as a form of escapism from the after-war times during the 90s, and how Japan influenced the western world with the introduction of the kawaii. Jun’ichi Nakahara’s beautiful book cover illustrations (1913-1983) of women represent a beginning for manga and anime style. Weirdly enough, upon entering the room they called my attention as they resembled ‘Girl with a Kitten’ by Lucien Freud, which coincidentally does match the theme of this particular exhibition.
The Hello Kitty room is probably one of the most talked about parts of the exhibition. With two walls full of Hello Kitty branded objects ranging from notebooks, to rice cookers, to coin purses... A shrine to miss Kitty, and an ode to this epitome of capitalism for having influenced a whole generation, not only of children, but of adults as well. It is interesting to see for yourself how the symbol and brand spread their wings through essentially every demographic, and benefited from the over-consumption boom of the 90s and early 2000s. Sadly, apart from this display of products, the room has the icky feeling of an instagram-like photobooth space without adding any artistic value to the exhibition. But, did you know Hello White (her actual name, I’ve learned) " [...] lives in a London suburb, and dreams of becoming a pianist and poet? [That] her birthday is on the 11th of November, her height is measured as five apples, and she weighs the same as three?" Maybe we’re all just like Hello Kitty, but just measured with a lot more apples.
The exhibition follows with great artworks, like Mike Kelley’s iconic ‘Aah… Youth!’ (1990), a critique of “childhood fetishisation”, and Wang Ping’s ‘An Emo Nose’ (2015), a bright and colourful animation depicting- in a surprisingly charming and accurate way- adult loneliness. The middle of the room is overflowing with objects, which the previous section helped contextualise: A Yung Lean poster, a SADBOYS bucket hat, a bright pink ski mask, a bag of smiley face stamped drugs, a Sylvanian Families toy set, a tamagotchi, a duolingo meme, a Charli XCX vinyl, an Animal Crossing gameplay... I found that, seeing what to me are such quotidian objects in an exhibition space made me laugh. They do however, encapsulate my childhood and teenage years, and quite frankly, are a big explanation of who I am. As someone that grew up with unrestrained access to the internet since the age of 11, I can say that these objects essentially raised me. It made me feel tribal, like I was in a global inside joke. These objects also showcase how cuteness can be used as an advantage politically and how effective it is for conveying a message, making the reality of an ugly theme (oppression, systematic injustice, etc) look easier to digest and divulge.
The last section I visited was an interactive space. To tell you the truth, I did not enjoy these rooms as much as I would've liked, and the reason why has nothing to do with the exhibition itself. The room was full of animalistic and screaming under-12 year old kids, and families with prams blocking stairways and hallways, and parents using the space as a playpen for their kids to run around. I stopped at the arcade, where you could play games that followed the theme of the exhibition. As I was giggling away playing the “linear visual novel about a Froggy chilling a pot”, children began running around impatiently, in the hopes that someone would free up one of the arcade looking screens. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t have the patience.
With a combination of humour, social commentary and critique, the exhibition encapsulates the story of a culture and phenomenon we are still living through. It showcases how we’ve created a subculture for the use of evading the terrifying thought of the internet times and the digitalisation taking over our worlds. It displays a wide arrange of topics all within the main theme, that is kept consistent through out. How cuteness “contains, domesticates and translates our desires”, and how it lives in a great part of who we all are. The exhibition, and now this text, concludes with a question: Does cute’s shiny new confidence represent its apotheosis in our late capitalist world? Or rather, does this sheen allow cute to undermine the very foundations of the neoliberal regime which spawned it with an ability to not only challenge the norm, but to transform it?

Process blog 4

In Project 4, I had to use two characters from Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory, The class had to develop a logo. Each logo had be complete with an icon symbolizing of character, and their typeset name. So my initial thoughts was to use both Willy Wonka and Charlie Bucket as they are the most notable characters in movie. With the Logo for Willy Wonka I wanted a very simply but effective style. I focused on his hat and his last name because I think that's the most recognizable features on Willy Wonka. The colors that I think Willy Wonka represents is purple and black so I focused on just to those. The only thing I wish I could take out is the Willy text in the logo but as the instruction stated I was required too. For the Charlie logo, I focused on the golden ticket as that was a big theme for Charlie. The logo consists of the ticket, Charlie Bucket's hat, and his name in the lower center of the ticket. I used Charlie hat because it was a few scene in the movie where he wore it. For the ticket logo I think that black and yellow was the only colors in needed for it.

(Revised Blog Post #4) Logos. An impactful element in the realm of graphic design and the general field of advertising. A well-designed logo follows several key principles in creating and developing the brand. These principles include engaging the viewer, communicating the message clearly, being memorable, and being scalable (meaning it can translate well in multiple sizes.)
In Project #4, my goal was to provide my translation and interpretation of a character from a movie of my choice into an effective logo design. These logos must follow all the principles previously listed above, while also having the ability to be translated in black and white, and in color. The characters I chose to further study and develop various logo concepts include Willy Wonka and Charlie Bakcets from the award-winning film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971.)
I start by drafting thumbnail sketches of various potential concepts for the final design of each logo. Willy Wonka was a fairly easy character to generate ideas for, due to his spontaneous, crazy, and memorable personality and mannerisms. Charlie Bucket, however, proved to be a challenge, as the more I studied his character, the more 2d or indicative he appeared to be. While he certainly has his moments in the film that allow him to shine as a character, his overall personality proved to be tough to generate ideas for.
Next, I further expanded these rough concepts by importing the image files into adobe Illustrator and experimenting with line length and thickness by utilizing the pen tool.
Concept Statements:
Willy Wonka, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
Concept Statement Willy Wonka is an innovative mastermind who founded a magical, yet mysterious chocolate factory. The final design is mainly composed of circular swirls to represent the nonsensical craziness of Wonka’s character, and his iconic top hat is the focal point of the logo. The hat’s brim is supposed to represent Wonka’s eyebrows, and the circular swirl and peppermint are meant to represent the eyes of the character. The color choices are meant to reflect the color palette of Wonka’s costume in the film. The typeface was inspired by Wonka’s candy bars and sweets packaging. The typeface is arranged in an arched-circular fashion, which frames the design to give it a more finished look.
Charlie Bucket, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
Concept Statement Charlie Bucket is often described as the embodiment of virtue, as his selfless and kind-hearted personality is showcased throughout many moments in the film. The bucket design was chosen to reflect the character belonging to the poor/lower class, and the ticket peeking out the top of the logo is meant to be symbolic of the golden ticket that allowed him to visit Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The swirl at the top of the design is meant to represent water, and is also purposefully similar to the swirl detail in Willy Wonka’s logo design, foreshadowing Charlie eventually becoming the next Willy Wonka. The color palette is meant to reflect the colors used for Charlie’s character in the film. The typeface is meant to be simple, yet reflect the character’s shining virtue throughout the film. The typeface also frames the design to give it a more finished and finalized look.

LEAK: “Woke” Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Reboot coming 2023
The news keep coming in today and while we’re sure there’s people that care about Sebastian Jones wondering about missing people in the United Kingdom, this is an actual big one: The cast list and concept art for a star-studded 2023 reboot of Roald Dahl’s iconic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been leaked by a trusted source.
It seems the new movie is going the typically “woke” route, changing the genders of Violet Beauregarde and Augustus Gloop, as well as featuring a nonbinary incarnation of Willy Wonka.
“They wanted to go a more mature, maybe even a little sexy way with this film. They aged up the cast and made sure to fit each of the main characters into the contemporary zeitgeist of the time we live in.”
The source continues: “Veruca Salt will be played by Essence Woods. Their incarnation of Veruca is a shallow influencer who only "does it for the gram”. Her “death” is going to be pretty gory as far as my knowledge goes, they want to play with the horror movie trope of the hand in the garbage disposal. I heard that Essence was very pleasant on set, but seemed very insistent on not showing the finished product to her daughter.“
"Violet Beauregarde is a guy named Beau Beauregarde played by Hiroki Hamada. They wanted someone who knows how to skate, because there’s going to be an Oompa Loompa chase scene on a skateboard. As far as I know they really wanted to lean into this subgroup of people online who have a fetish for the blueberry transformation scene so that one’s like ten minutes long. Hiro donated his paycheck to charity and just did this whole project for fun.”
“A really interesting casting choice was Preston Barlowe as Charlie Bucket. He’s a young drug dealer trying to make enough money to keep his grandpa, who’s in a coma, alive, so when he gets the golden ticket off a dead body in an alleyway, he sees it as this crazy jackpot moment. He’s in a love triangle with Veruca and Beau. I heard Preston only did it because Vincent thought it was too dark.”
“Cole Addams plays Mike Teevee, who, in this incarnation, is one of Charlie’s clients, which is why he’s so resentful of him. They also took that TV addiction from the original and turned it into a porn addiction. I don’t know what they’re gonna do to him once he’s shrunk down but I heard that it’s the reason the film’s getting an R rating. Cole was high off his ass all through filming, people thought he was just going method.”
“They made Augustus Gloop into a woman named Augustine Goosh, apparently a reference to Andrea Jensen’s twin sister or something? I don’t know. She doesn’t even really eat that much chocolate in the movie, her gluttony is mostly related to validation. She’s really annoying and constantly needs to be validated by everyone around her, which is why they throw her in the chocolate river, which is where she’s eaten by licorice piranhas. Candie Rose acted the shit out of her death scene, it really sounded like she was getting mauled to death.”
“And in a very interesting turn of events they decided to cast SAINT as Willy Wonka? They do a pretty good job in the role but I just know a lot of people are gonna drag the performance just because of the choice to make Wonka nonbinary. I do think they went too hard on the sexuality here and there, but it’s a solid performance and there’s a scene where they monologue for like 5 minutes washing their hair with chocolate - test audiences cried because it was so touching.”
Other roles have reportedly gone to Elsa Bergström as Augustine’s mother, Dominic Torres and Axel Parrish as Chris and Chros, two gay oompa loompas, Indie Hall as drug addict and Goosh Jensen as Scrungus, Wonka’s ex wife.
