you gotta admire the commitment genre creators have when it comes to using black people as the stand in for the bigot in their allegories of racism (or gay people in their allegories of homophobia). I very much doubt a single person went to them and praised them for how smart and revolutionary and NEVER DONE BEFORE these storylines are (less due to enlightment than to indifference, probably). yet they keep at it.

I love the focus on murphy and octavia during pike's flashbacks: octavia responding to his question about the key to survival on earth (not dying), murphy clearly responding to him saying they have to keep fighting despite otherwise acting like the class clown, murphy brazenly affirming he'd survive (and reminding pike of that in the present), murphy becoming The Lesson and actually getting what pike was trying to do, octavia being the first one to try to verbally get pike to stop it, murphy being the first to climb on the dropship (octavia was the first to climb out)...

I love it because first, I love both characters and I think sometimes they are in "dialogue" in a strange way, although this barely scratches the surface. second, because out of that class, they are THEE survivalists, bar none (sidenote: miller also makes it to the end of the show, and although he doesn't have as big a role in this episode, he IS the one who finally stops pike, hitting him in the head. food for thought).

and third, because of something else murphy says, when he saves pike's life (out of pragmatism) and pike smiles with something akin to pride: "go float yourself. everything I learned, I learned on the ground." aka not from you. and they parallel pike trying to teach the class how to light a fire with octavia lighting one in the present... but we know it was lincoln who taught octavia what she needed. lincoln, who pike deprived her of.

in a way, his lessons are best incarnated by the two of them, personified in particular by murphy using a similar strategy as pike beating him to unite the prisoners against a common enemy. in another, if anything in pike's lessons actually stuck, the way later lessons did (in murphy's case a lot of them coming from emori... grounder significant others as teachers <3), it was because there was already something within them geared for them. pike failed, not really through fault of his own (the council really had his hands tied). but he's not the one to be thanked for murphy and octavia's successes. he was not formative for them, in part because, this being a flashback, it couldn't really change anything.

Picard’s season 2 finale and Strange New Worlds’ season 1 premiere aired on the same day (both of them being Trek captains, Enterprise captains specifically), and then both popping into the Doctor Strange movie as members of the Illuminati literally the next day!
