Doing a character acting exercise with Ash, as well as a study of 90s Madhouse/Gainax-style animation.
This'll be an on-going animation thing where I continuously add more expressions and acting.

I'm bored...I'm gonna analyse a GIF.
This year marks Ed, Edd n Eddy's 25th anniversary. I may not talk about it much on this blog, but it's one of my all time favourite cartoons. I'd watch it constantly during my childhood and to this day "Big Picture Show" is my favourite series finale. So, given how much I enjoy the show, I was happy to see more tweets about it than usual on my Twitter (yes I'm still calling it that) timeline because of the anniversary.
The influx of tweets (yes I'm still calling them that) about the show led me to this tweet. There's a very good analysis of the moment here on Tumblr, but here's a screenshot from a reply under the tweet of what the user said.
It made me think of other similar moments of character acting in animation, and of course I started thinking of examples from Animaniacs.
There's many to be found across the original show and the reboot, but one example I really like is this moment here:
Tumblr media
For context, all three Warners are making similar jokes about the size of a hunter's feet.
It's not the dialogue I wanna talk about, this moment is brief and ultimately not that important, but I just love how the Warners are animated here. It tells you a lot about them based only on the character acting and body language:
Yakko
Yakko is the first to come onscreen to make a comment, indicating that he's the leader. He calmy walks into frame holding one hand out conversationally, before standing with both arms behind his back. Compared to the other two's stances, this makes him look more reserved and professional. This not only indicates that he's older, but also suggests he's cool-headed and not as reliant on physical action as his sibs, hence why his arms are behind his back; he only really needs his voice. He gives a smug grin, so even without hearing what he's saying you know he's being snarky right now, which contrasts with his body language, showing he's purposefully maintaining a deceptively non-aggressive demeanour and is likely a smart aleck in general.
Wakko
Wakko is the only one who doesn't come in from the side, instead he enters frame from below, indicating that he's the most unconventional of the three. He flails his arms around rather than keeping them in one place like Yakko, which not only suggests that he's more wild and energetic, but (as I said earlier) is more reliant on physical action than Yakko. Wakko does a sort of "don't worry about it" motion with his left arm with a simple smile on his face, a smile that lacks any smugness. This suggests that he's a little friendlier in comparison. He sticks out his tongue like a dog and eventually settles on T-rex arms, indicating that he's more animalistic than his sibs.
Dot
Dot quickly hops into frame from the side, almost like a pounce, with a determined and somewhat aggressive facial expression, showing energy and spunk. She punches the air, which only emphasizes her feistiness. Her movements suggest she's more prone to being outwardly aggressive than her brothers. Her expression softens to more of a cute smile, showing that she's not all aggression and is quite cute and jovial too. She settles with her hands on her hips, a typical pose used to show that a character is sassy and/or confident, hence indicating that Dot is too.
Basically I just think the way animation can be used to establish characters without us having to hear a word out of them is really cool.

I am working in a haunted house attraction right now, and I perform in the 'scary bog room' as a blind swamp hag cannibal character. If you've read Treasure Island, I'm basically 'Blind Pew', except more monstrous.
Tumblr media
This role is great cos much as I like horror I am kind of sensitive and I appreciate the room having mostly just watery gurgles, low creaks and groaning animals sound loops, which is my kind of normal background of choice soundtrack anyway, just turned up to 11. I dunno how I'd handle standing next to a puppet or a speaker that played 5 easily memorable lines of dialogue OVER and OVER again very loudly, surrounded by gore and unpleasant imagery, that must be very tiring for some. Having worked retail I know how aggravating just listening to the same 30-40 songs every store in America plays on repeat is teeth grinding, so having to hear the same shit on repeat every 2 MINUTES must be torture.
Reason I mention this is cos I have yet to really visit any of the many other room stages asides mine, as its a large labyrinthine place, and I've yet no reason to visit other parts of the attraction cos before showtime, the lights are off. But during operation hours, I get to *hear* everything going on in them from beyond. And one of the recorded loops I hear every now and then as I do my job, is this loud demonic voice shriek, that for the longest time I thought was just garbled nonsense word noise. But it was today after just hearing it replay in my mind once again for the millionth time, because I heard it by now THAT often, I realized it was saying:
"IT'S!!! A! BOYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!"
And for the life of me now I wanna know what the heck IS this thing.
Cos I don't know of any evil delivery nurses in our roster, and I feel about 70% certain we lack an evil hospital section (though it's certainly possible.)as I have yet to see any props or cast member wardrobes that seem themed to that sort of idea. So what da heck ARE YOU, mystery screamer prop???

A little animation of a cute young man just trying to find his way in this crazy world. I animated some lip sync on this little bean bag character that I drew. Just a fun little skit unless you hate that kind of thing in which case it is a layered and sophisticated study of society and our vapid obsession with physical beauty.

On a scale of 1-10, while voice/character acting how much do you feel your character's emotions? (If it depends on the intensity of the emotion/situation feel free to say so)
I'll draw a funny little animal of youre choice if you include how long you feel those emotions post-session

I love to lull my fellow cast into a false sense of security that I am a silly guy just along for this ride, then bust out the most devastating piece of character study right when they least expect it. That kinda bullshit fuels me.

[RASTER & VECTOR] Jenny expression draws: anxious w/ cold sweat (concerned)
Art Timelapse
Head Thumbnail Timelapse
Raster pencil & vector versions (this time, with a more disciplined application of the vector brushes😳).
Finished Friday Nov. 10.
Getting more into character expressions/acting.💪😁Intended to look like she’s thinking/saying "Don't tell me you forgot [this extremely important thing]?!”
Also, change of plans: I'll post each different expression individually, instead of all at once or even 2 different expressions at a time.
MINI JOURNAL
Started around Tues or Wed after the Jenny Anxious art, worked on about weekly up until the week of July 28. Then, started again in August.
Sorry for taking so long on these sketches. I was trying to get the facial expressions & body gestures just right, since I’ve gotten really interested in character acting.
Another reason: CW // body condition mention
Health issue. This time, ingrown hair on left armpit.
END body condition mention
Not dominant hand, but I use it heavily for my digital eraser brush (I hold down my left thumb for the “Erase with brush” tool). 1 possible cause of the health condition: generally not having this rigorous of drawing (as I’ve mentioned in the description of a Spring 2021 2D animation cat gesture drawing)
ART SUPPLIES
Software: Adobe Fresco
Brushes:
Sketch: Pencil [default Adobe Fresco pencil brush]
Re-sketch & tone: My Flat [my tweaked version of Fresco’s Flat vector brush]
