Chapter 1074 — Mark III
Really enjoying the current arc! Although I do wonder what happened with Law and Kid from time to time, the mysteries of Egghead are really piling up.
First, the cover story is amazing:
Tumblr media
Nice little three-way brawl. Although Caesar has his powers, Queen doesn’t seem too cybernetically enhanced yet, although he does have that lovely mechanical arm to strangle Judge with. I wonder if he lost it in an accident or he changed it himself?
Tumblr media
The Bubble Shield is cool! And Oda once again does what he does so well and shows without telling: the bubble can withstand a blast from a bazooka at point blank range. Impressive.
I wonder what happened with Pacifista Mark II?
Tumblr media
Poor Sentomaru, all shaky and beat :( but the resolve is strong! And he must be quite a beloved fixture on Egghead for the people to care so much about him.
Radio Head dude in the bottom right corner is cute.
Tumblr media
Why is it unsettling that your employer tries to reach you in matters pertaining to your work, Sentomaru? Something you’d rather not talk about, Sentomaru? Everything fine at Egghead, Sentomaru?
I wonder if Kizaru is the Admiral in charge of the Special Science Group? His Sabaody interactions with Sentomaru and the fact that he’s on his way now would indicate this to be the case.
And the spread of the week!
Tumblr media
a) Zoro makes the future drip
b) York is one tall lady (but Sanji doesn’t discriminate, he loves all the ladies!)
c) Robin, stopping Nami from kicking Robin’s former, unconscious, tormentors says something profound about both women
d) Please Oda, just…give the ladies some trousers, OK?
Tumblr media
I do enjoy the ongoing gag of Zoro’s total lack of sense of direction. Not sure if Sanji’s sarcastic here, with tears in his eyes, but Robin’s supportive clenched fist and smile is really cute (although her words are harsh).
Tumblr media
And “I always go all out for everything” is such a Luffy statement <3
It’s nice that Luffy and Zoro get a moment to just relax.
However, you guys should really know that it’s a horrible idea to split up into smaller groups when something isn’t right as evidenced by the laser dome being operational. Do not split up! THERE IS A MOLE IN YOUR MIDST (mirroring Stussy, I presume, which in turn mirrors the double-agenting back in Wano). Maybe figure out that before splitting up into smaller teams?
But before we go into the Christie-esque Whodunnit-mystery: a detour to Bonney.
Tumblr media
I thought Vegapunk was still with her, up until this panel. She really let him go quite quickly when she found her father’s memories. Maybe not the best writing (she was determined to kill him for quite a while before this and then she just… lets him go?), but understandable from a plot-perspective.
Tumblr media
So Kuma was a slave in his childhood and Bonney sees him beaten? Reminiscent of other “see the memories of others” scenes, where the protagonist is helpless in the face of history, unable to change what has already happened. You can only be there and try to understand how it connects to a larger picture.
Tumblr media
I just wanted to mention this panelling. It’s a really nice mirroring of father and daughter: Bonney covers, a small girl thrown down on the floor, yet Kuma keeps going (where, we don’t know). But then she looks at him (or his memories) and strengthens her resolve: she will see her father and understand him.
Poor Bonney, all shaky yet resolved :(
Tumblr media
That slice of Kuma’s smile is just… ouch.
There’s probably something to unravel here on the justification (or responsibility) of children bearing their parent’s trauma, but I’m not the one to untangle that ball of knotty yarn.
And back to the Whodunnit part of the show!
Tumblr media
Who is it? Who cut off the defenses and enabled CP0 to get up? Who is picking off the Vegapunk Satellites one at a time? A new character or someone we’ve already got to know and love or loathe?
a) One theory is that Urogue will play a larger part in the upcoming arc since all other Supernovas have had their time in the limelight. He is large enough to take on Pythagoras by himself, but he hasn’t been shown to have any connection to Egghead or Vegapunk.
b) The klink and klank suggests either a robot or someone with a large wrench.
c) Is it a Warlord-Pacifista, sneaking inside the lab, fulfilling the orders of Lucci and Kaku?
And the return of Beebs!
Tumblr media
Vivi is very professional-looking here! Nice shirt!
But now i am itching for the backstory. Why is she at the WENP with Wapol of all people? Where is her entourage and his gold-digging wife? What happened after the Reverye and why was she crying yesterday? What is the timespan of all these events?
I really enjoy Morgans. He understands the role he chooses to play a little too well, taking on the mantle of a Murdoch-type slimeball who’s only in it to shape the world into what he wants. Although the government threatened him earlier and they seem to still be on the run, he’s fine with taking their money when spinning the yarn to support their interests.
There’s probably some other meta hiding here about the role of newspapers and how long we’ve had independent, truth-based journalism and if it’s ever been impartial or always entertainment, but, alas, it’s not a piece for me to delve into.
Great chapter, once more! I give it a deerstalker to wear, a gossip rag to write and the strength to face your father’s demons.

Pairing: The Rogue’s Gallery (Geralt, Syverson, Mike, August Walker, Walter Marshall) x Stephanie Daniels (OFC)
WC 1074
Warnings: mentions of blood and injury
They pulled up to the house in a quiet neighborhood, Sy parking half on the curb as Geralt's bike slid to a stop, August’s SUV parked out front right where the tracker said it would be. Getting out, they ran up the walk, hearing a crash from inside. August didn't pause, kicking the door in and they rushed inside.
"Steph!" August called out and there was another crash from deeper in the house. Running towards the sound, they stopped, seeing the wolves locked in combat. Jordan's was a dark blonde color and massive, but his fur was streaked with blood from bites and tears along his back, flank, and muzzle. He was tackled by Stephanie's, her wolf smaller than his, but her bite was strong as she sank her teeth into his shoulder and brought him down. He rolled, knocked her off and they came at each other again, paws swiping and teeth snapping. She went low as he went high, catching him around the throat and slamming him to the floor on his back. He shifted back, the fur retreating, and he pushed against her, fought to free himself, trying to dislodge her teeth from around his throat. She suddenly wrenched and blood sprayed, bone snapping.
"Steph." Sy said and she whipped around to look at them, the piece of gore falling from her mouth to land wetly on the floor. Her eyes were wild, enraged, and her lips pulled back from blood stained fangs in a growl.
"Easy." Walter said, his voice low. "Easy sweetheart. It's us." She couldn't seem to hear them, advancing on them slowly, her body low to the floor as her hackles raised, her ears pinning back. They could see blood on her fur, and it wasn't all Jordan's. "You're injured, love." He took a step towards her, but backed up as she snarled at him.
"Steph," Sy said, "Come back to us, darlin'."
"Listen to us, Princess." August said.
"Stephanie." Geralt said, "Don't let us lose you to this." She suddenly stopped, shaking her head, and her body relaxed before she let out a low whine, limping over to them.
"Baby." Sy said as she nearly collapsed at their feet, shifting back. Ragged gashes and deep punctures littered her back and shoulders and they knelt, Sy's hands hovering over her.
"Sy…" She said, her voice a pained whine, and August came back with a blanket, laying it over her and wrapping her in it before gathering her in his arms, picking her up. "Are Mike and Albert okay?"
"We can talk about that later, sweetheart." Sy said, brushing blood streaked hair away from her face. "Let's get you outta here first."
"Cleanup crew is on its way." Geralt said, putting his phone back in his pocket, "I'll wait for them. Take her home."
"No!" She reached for him, grabbing his jacket. "Don't leave me, please. None of you, please. I need all of you, I need to know you're okay."
"I'll call Leon when we get in the truck." August said, "Council is just going to have to fucking deal that Lewis is a corpse."
She was quiet on the drive back, curled up in the blanket on August's lap, her fingers twisting in his shirt as he carried her into the cabin, Walter having driven his truck back to the cabin so August could tend to Stephanie.
"You need to get this blood off of you." He said and she nodded. He carried her into the bathroom, sitting her down on the toilet as he started the shower, pulling his clothes off and unwrapping her from the blanket when the water reached a suitable temp. The hot water irrigating her injuries made tears come to her eyes and he held her against his chest as she sobbed, the water swirling deep red then pink then clear around the drain. He washed the blood out of her hair with gentle movements, making sure to rinse it thoroughly and he didn't fail to notice the fresh silver wounds around her wrists.
When she was clean, he shut off the shower, toweling her off gently before wrapping her in it and one around his hips. He waited as she brushed her teeth quickly, getting the blood out of her mouth, before picking her up again and bringing her down to the living room where Walter and the others had made something of a nest, moving the couch and recliners aside and piling blankets and pillows on the floor.
"I killed him." She said as they laid there, and the smallness to her voice broke their hearts, Geralt’s arm tightening around her waist as he held her back against his chest. "He hurt Mike, Albert, and Sy, so I killed him."
"You did."
"I didn't--I didn't stop to think, I just did it because he hurt them." She said, "Am I--am I a monster?"
"No, sweetheart." Walter said, their hearts breaking a little bit more, "You're an Alpha. He hurt your Mates, he hurt your pack, but it should have been us. Not you."
"I'm sorry I didn't wait for you."
"It's not that." August said, "We know death. Sy with the Army, Walter with the police, Geralt with being a Tracker, and me with…well, what I did with the Agency and for the Council. We know death, we've taken lives. We’re not angry it wasn’t us, baby, we just didn't want you to know it too. We wanted to protect you from that."
"I didn't care what happened to me." She said, "I didn't care if I died too. I needed him to pay for what he had done to them."
"You protected them." Geralt said, "You left with Lewis to protect Mike and Albert, and you made sure he would never hurt them or anyone else ever again."
"Council is going to be pissy." She said, "They wanted him alive."
"They'll get over it." August said, “Steph, I have to know. How did you know to take my truck?”
“What do you mean?”
“How did you know the Council gave it to me and it has a tracker in it?” He asked and she tilted her face up to look at him.
“I didn’t.” She said, “I just grabbed the first keys I saw. It has a tracker in it?” There was a beat of silence before they gave soft laughs, August pressing his lips to her forehead.

“In the year of the Incarnation of the Savior 1089, Count Roger took a new wife, his former one, Eremberga, daughter of Count William of Mortain, having died. Her name was Adelaide and she was the niece of Boniface, that most renowned marquis of Italy; to be precise, she was the daughter of Boniface’s brother. She was a young woman with a very becoming face.”
Goffredo Malaterra, The Deeds of Count Roger of Calabria and Sicily and of his Brother Duke Robert Guiscard, book 4, ch. 14
Adelasia (or Adelaide) was born around 1074 in Northwestern Italy. Her parents were Manfredi (or Manfredo) Incisa del Vasto, a member of the Aleramici House, and his unnamed wife. From her paternal side, she was the niece of Bonifacio, Marquis of Savona and of Western Liguria, “the most renowned marquis of Italy” (in Goffredo Malaterra, The Deeds of Count Roger ..., book 4, ch. 14). Adelasia had a brother, Enrico, and two unnamed sisters.
Following their father’s tragic death (killed together with his brother Anselmo during a popular uprising in 1079), the siblings were entrusted to the guardianship of their uncle Bonifacio, although quite soon Enrico decided to travel all the way to Southern Italy to help the Norman leaders Robert and Roger Hauteville in their conquest.
The Aleramic scion was gifted with the counties of Butera and Paternò for his services. But the del Vasto family fortunes were destined to grow as Enrico’s sisters married into the newly established Hauteville comital dynasty. His unnamed sisters were betrothed to the Great Count Roger’s bastard sons Goffredo (who would die young without getting the chance to marry) and Giordano, while Adelasia married the Great Count himself.
In 1089 Roger was at his third marriage. His first (and beloved) wife Judith d'Évreux had given him only daughters before dying in 1076. The following year, he married Eremburge de Mortain, who bore him his first legitimate son, Malgerio, and died in 1089. With just a son (who would die young around 1098) as heir, it isn’t surprising Roger remarried. The choice of an Italian wife (his previous ones had been fellow Frenchwomen) was part of the Hautevilles’ strategies to latinize Southern Italy by welcoming Gallo-Italic immigrants with the hoped result to counter the already existing Greek-Arabic majority.
Adelasia would bore Roger two sons: Simone (born in 1093) and Ruggero (born in 1095 – although Malaterra records “in the year of the Incarnation of the Lord 1098, Countess Adelaide became pregnant again by Count Roger” in Goffredo Malaterra, The Deeds of Count Roger ..., book 4, ch. 26) and at least one daughter: either Matilda (born between 1093-1095, future Countess consort of Alife) or Maximilla (birth date unknown, future wife of Count Palatin Ildebrandino VI Aldobrandeschi), or perhaps both of them.
The Great Count died on June 22nd 1101 in Mileto (Calabria). Following her late husband’s wishes, 27-years old Adelasia assumed the regency of the county for her 8-years old son, Simone, who became the new Count of Sicily. She smartly surrounded herself with capable and trusted men, like her brother Enrico, or Christodulos, a Greek Orthodox (possibly a Muslim convert) admiral who had been nominated amiratus (Grand Dignitary) of Sicily already under Ruggero I.
Little Count Simone’s rulership was tragically shortlived as the child died in Mileto, on September 1105, at just 12 years old. He was succeeded by his younger (and, according to the sources, better-suited) brother, Ruggero. As the new Great Count was even younger (10 years old), Adelasia resumed her role of Regent. It is in this period, precisely in 1109, that the Warrant of Countess Adelasia, Europe’s oldest known paper document, was issued.
Although a more generous patron for the Latin clergy, Adelasia maintained a good relationship with the Muslim and Greek communities, granting them freedom of worship and a relevant administrative autonomy (so that in a Greek-Arab charter dated 1109 she is called malikah). She was well aware that, following the change of ownership, her adoptive country was in need of a stabler bureaucratic apparatus, justice administration and a proper capital city. Mileto had been dear to her late husband, but Adelasia had different ideas. Although she preferred Messina for its strategic position, she realised Palermo, having been the capital of the Sicilian Emirate and thus adorned with splendid buildings, was better suited to become the capital of the Hauteville counts. In 1112 she moved the capital from Mileto to Palermo and that same year she stepped back from the Regency, allowing her son Ruggero to start ruling by his own right.
Not used to sitting around and willing to increase her son’s power and fortunes, the dowager Countess accepted to marry in 1113 the childless and older Baodouin I, King of Jerusalem. Prenuptial agreements stated that, in the absence of issue, the Kingdom of Jerusalem would have been inherited by Ruggero and his descendants. This royal marriage proved to be a faux pas as Boudouin was still legally married to his second wife, Arda of Armenia. The King had merely decided to chase her away, sending poor Arda to live in a nunnery, but then simply allowed her to go back to her father’s home in Constantinople without properly annulling the marriage and casting the shadow of bigamy over the new marital union. Moreover, always in need of money to pay for the troops, soon Baodouin spent all of Adelasia’s dowry. Taking advantage of a temporary illness, Papal Legate Arnoul de Chocques convinced the King to annul the marriage so that his wife could be sent back to Sicily. Despite complying, the King was not the least happy as he wished to milk some more the of his Norman wife’s riches, but as the royal union was still childless, Pope Pasquale II could not risk seeing the Hauteville expand their influence over the Holy Land in a possible near future.
In 1117, after four dissatisfying years as Queen Consort of Jerusalem, Adelasia returned back to Palermo. She spent the last year of her life devoting herself to religion. She died in Patti (near Messina) on April 16th 1118 and was buried in the city’s cathedral, where she still lies.
In 1130, her beloved son Ruggero would be crowned the first King of Sicily. According to chronicler William of Tyre, Ruggero never forgot the humiliation his mother had to suffer in Jerusalem so that he and his heirs never truly reconciled with the Kingdom of Jerusalem (“Qua redeunte ad propria, turbatus est supra modum filius; et apud se odium concepit adversus regnum et ejus habitatores, immortale” William of Tyre, Chronicon, XI.29)
