Random Doctor Who Facts You Might Not Know, Part 46: Gallifrey at War Part 7
Spoiler warning for new content - Dark Gallifrey: Morbius.
The Doctor was involved in the Last Great Time War for millions of days. (Novel: The Day of the Doctor)
While on the planet Dust, the Third Doctor was shot in the chest by Magdalena Bishop and left to die in the street. Sarah Jane found Jim and cradled his head as he slowly began to regenerate. He thought this was very, very wrong. This weakened the Doctor's immune system, leading to the Doctor's infection with a biodata virus, which by the time of the Eighth incarnation would convert the Doctor to the perspective of the Faction Paradox. (Novel: Interference - Book Two)
As a result of this virus, the Eighth Doctor had lost his shadow. (Novel: Unnatural History)
A ghost of the original timeline's Third Doctor remained in the TARDIS databank. When the TARDIS was corrupted into the Edifice and the Edifice hung over Gallifrey, the Eighth Doctor used the TARDIS defense systems to destroy Gallifrey and Kasterborous, making the universe choose between the new timeline or the Metebelis timeline the TARDIS remembered. (Novel: The Ancestor Cell)
The civil war Morbius was involved in - usually called the Great Schism - involved the Time Lords using time as a weapon for bloodshed for the first time. (Audio: Morbius) This would technically make it a time war.
Early Time Lords destroyed the Hydran homeworld by dropping their own future on top of it. (Audio: Morbius)
By some accounts, the High Council was nervous to engage directly with the universe during this civil war as that was exactly what Morbius had said they should do, so they fought using a proxy- the Fifth Doctor. (Novel: Warmonger)
While the Supreme Coordinator, the Fifth Doctor wore a black military uniform. The Doctor’s army was composed of a mix of Sontarans, Cybermen, Ogrons, Draconians, and Ice Warriors. They defeated Morbius's forces, but the Doctor made sure Morbius would survive his 'death.' (Novel: Warmonger)
The final battle of Morbius's civil war occurred on Karn and resulted in the deaths of most of both armies as well as Karn's native population. (Short story: The Legacy of Gallifrey)
During the Vampire Wars, Gallifrey developed Anathema - a warship the size of an entire planet. It was armed with the Cold, a weapon so devastating it would break through the space-time continuum and suck everything into an alternate universe. (Novel: Interference - Book Two)
After regenerating on Karn, the War Doctor refused to allow his TARDIS to be equipped with weaponry (she would have been block transferred into a battle TARDIS) as he did not want to force her to change as he had. (Audio: Light the Flame)
Cass Fermazzi was present at the Battle of Skull Moon and was so horrified by the massacre that it embittered her to the Time Lords. (Novel: The Day of the Doctor) This hatred ironically led to the Eighth Doctor regenerating into the War Doctor, the precise incarnation who earned the title "the Butcher of Skull Moon."
The Dalek Time Strategist tried to manipulate the Eighth Doctor by finding an alternate universe version of Alex - his dead great grandson - and putting him in cryogenic stasis. The Doctor took the casket he was in and woke him up. (Audio: Restoration of the Daleks)
Bliss had been a companion of the Eighth Doctor, but due to changes in the timeline as a result of the Last Great Time War, this changed, leaving the Doctor and Alex without memory of Bliss. However, the Doctor felt as though someone was missing. They would eventually learn of Bliss from a memory recorder. (Audio: Vespertine)
Indeed, the Doctor eventually recalled enough to tell River Song about Bliss at some point. (Audio: Companion Piece)

"I don't want to go to war"
Chapter One: Sparks
This fic is fully written, 8 chapters long, an unplanned thasmin 9k abomination that I originally intended as a one shot.
13, Yaz, and Dan arrive on an intergalactic mall to get a part to fix the TARDIS, and 13 sees someone (spoiler: it's Cass) who makes her have guilty time war feelings.

Not sure I’m a fan of this. Especially of the description.

Where the hell is Bliss? She is legitimately one of my favorite Eighth Doctor companions and she’s just not here. I want to hear an Eighth Doctor, Bliss, and Alex TARDIS team not one where Bliss is replaced with a character that shouldn’t be there.

Out Now: The Eighth Doctor Returns to the Time War For @bigfinish With New Companion... Cass?!
The Eighth Doctor encounters the Daleks, a warped timeline, and a new companion in a brand-new box set of full-cast audio adventures, released yesterday by Big Finish Productions. Cass Fermazzi (Emma Campbell-Jones) – the doomed pilot seen briefly in 2013’s Doctor Who special minisode, The Night of the Doctor – boards the TARDIS but, somehow, she’s meeting the Doctor for the first time. Here’s…

Showdown 2k24 Nominations!
alright, redoing this post now that I can give a concrete start date of Monday the 15th of January!
Nominations for the tournament are open up until the start date, and you can submit anyone who could reasonable be considered a companion, either by sending me an ask or by filling out
this form.
If you make your nomination via the form you can also submit some propaganda to go alongside the poll. Anyone who was considered a regular at any point in the last year will automatically be included, as well as anyone who was in the original tournament (+/- a couple I might miss or misremember as being a regular because I don't have old lists anywhere). The exception to this is last years winner, Rose Tyler, she will not be getting a place in the main tournament, however after the final I will run a poll to see if our new winner can beat her. (oh and also maybe I'll leave the TARDIS out but not fully decided yet)
The tournament is going to be run in the same way I did @adventure-showdown, meaning I'll keep companions from different periods of the show and different mediums segregated at first so the nicher ones don't immediately get knocked out, and slowly get mingled together. The exact details are going to depend on just how may characters get included.
Errm yeah, so go wild, nominate whoever you like (as long as they are a companion). If they are from teh TV show they have to be on this list to qualify, and for EU companions I'm going with them needing a TARDIS wiki page, and also I will give them a quick proof read to make sure they pass, the bar is low but it is there
if you want to submit an alternate version of the character sorry but main version only unless you can give a really good reason, eg regenerations of a time lord
also, if they are primarily from another franchise that'll be a no
The full list of contestents is under the cut and will be updated as nominations come in. Its sorted by medium and then to be alphabetical by first name. if an eu companion exists in multiple mediums i just sort of picked one or I put them under the other category, people who exist in real life are also sorted into their own category. There are some characters under Classic Who/NuWho who were not companions on TV but were in the EU. Companions who's names are in green have had propaganda submitted for them, if they're not in green then they don't, and just because someone has propaganda doesn't mean i wont accept more

TDP 1141: #DoctorWho 8th 5. Doctor Who: Time War 5: Cass
https://bbvproductions.co.uk/products/Faction-Paradox-The-Confession-of-Brother-Signet-AUDIO-DOWNLOAD-p389922366
This title was released in January 2023. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 28 February 2023, and on general sale after this date.
The Doctor and his great-grandson Alex are back travelling the universe together… but when that universe is in the grips of a Time War, the unexpected lurks round every corner...
5.1 Meanwhile, Elsewhere by Tim Foley (1 part) The Doctor and Alex arrive on a tropical beach where something’s amiss. Meanwhile, elsewhere… a desperate pilot runs for his life. Meanwhile, elsewhere… it’s Cass Fermazzi’s first day on an errand-class starship. Meanwhile, elsewhere… it’s the beginning of the end of everything.
5.2 Vespertine by Lou Morgan (1 part) It’s Cass’s first trip in the TARDIS, and the Doctor is determined to make it one to remember. But when they arrive at a research base that shouldn’t exist, built above a missing explorer’s ship that should never have been found, it seems their visit’s going to be memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Because deep beneath the ice, there’s more than just a long-lost ship waiting for them…
5.3 Previously, Next Time by James Moran (2 parts) Part One: The Doctor, Cass and Alex land to find out what's causing temporal anomalies with the TARDIS, and come across an uninhabited planet, a mysterious factory, and a weapon so dangerous, it could destroy the Universe. But things go catastrophically wrong…
Part Two: The factory has vanished along with the TARDIS, and the formerly uninhabited planet is now fully populated by people who have been here for thousands of years, people who have never heard of the Time War OR Daleks. Something very strange is going on with time itself - and it's running out, fast.

not to like. dig into greek mythology once again but i'm thinking about cass in night of the doctor and in greek mythology her curse is that nobody believes her, which fits since the doctor refuses to listen to her despite her constantly fighting him (i hope you die i hope we both die) + living in a war (trojan war vs time war). and the reason lady cassandra is cursed is because she refuses a god's advances which... fits with her refusing the doctor (a godlike figure)'s offers

One of the things I liked about The Day of the Doctor novelization is the expansion of Cass’s story and how it ultimately ties into the Doctor’s life and best of all how this goes on to include
[ S P O I L E R S]
Thirteen. Surprise Thirteen was a surprise!
The owner of the voice was a young woman, called Cass Fermazzi. She was clever and brave and doomed. In later years, when I was able to return her remains to what was left of her family, I learned that she had grown up on one of the farm planets of the Gazrond Belt, and had stowed away on a star freighter at the age of fourteen to see the wonders of the universe and found there were no wonders left. Instead there was a war that threatened all reality. At first she ran, but one day, helping an old soldier die in a crater full of mud snakes under a burning moon, she realised there was nowhere left to hide. The following morning, the kindly medtech who closed the soldier’s eyes unclipped the bandolier from around the dead man’s chest and gave it to Cass, perhaps mistaking her for a friend or relative. Cass took the bandolier, tightened it around herself, and decided to start running in the opposite direction.
Three months later, she was crewing a gunship. Four years later, she had survived the Nightmare Child, the massacre of Skull Moon and fought in the ruins of the Ulterium. On the last day of her life, she and her crew successfully repelled a Dalek fleet from the feeding hives of the Vantross, but then, as they flew to safety, found themselves under attack from one of the Time Lord battle cruisers, now as indiscriminate in their slaughter as the Daleks themselves. They were blasted from the stars for no better reason, Cass realised, than that they were blocking the view of the retreating Daleks.
-- Moffat, Steven (2018-04-05). Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor (Target Collection) (Kindle Locations 91-101). Ebury Publishing. Kindle Edition.

Chapter 13
The Doctor
‘Was he a friend of yours?’ I asked. ‘A relative?’
Cass Fermazzi didn’t reply, but she took the bandolier I held out to her, and strapped it round her chest. She was looking at the sky, and there was something fierce in her eyes.
‘You look like you’re ready for a fight,’ I said.
‘Been ready all my life,’ she said. ‘I’m just admitting that now.’ She flashed a bleak little smile at me. ‘Thanks for looking after him,’ she said, and started climbing out of the crater.
‘What do you mean, all your life?’ I called after her.
‘Oh, you know,’ she said, without turning.
‘No, I really don’t.’
She turned at the lip of the crater, and sighed. ‘It’s going to sound stupid.’
‘Good. I hate things that don’t.’
‘When I was a kid I was in therapy.’
‘Weren’t we all?’
‘We weren’t rich though. I had one of those bots. Looked like a clown— God knows why. It was supposed to take away some of my memories, but it was so full of someone else’s, they all just kept spewing out.’
I felt my stomach turn over. It was exactly what I’d figured out, but it was chilling to hear it. ‘What kind of memories?’ ‘Just vague stuff. About always fighting for what’s right, but trying never to hurt people. Never be cruel, never be cowardly, that kind of thing. Cheesy stuff, but it got to me.’
Yeah, I thought, me too.
‘Time to go and do like the clown says, I guess.’ She flashed another sad smile, and was gone.
I could never save her, I knew that. She was too wrapped up in my own timeline. But at least, just once, she’d looked at me without hating me.
And you can’t save everyone, I reminded myself. You just have to save all the ones you can.
-- Moffat, Steven (2018-04-05). Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor (Target Collection) (Kindle Locations 3337-3356). Ebury Publishing. Kindle Edition.
[snip]
Well, anyway, enough brooding, I decided. The day of the Doctor was over at last, and it was time to get my head back in the game. Somewhere there’s danger, somewhere there’s injustice, and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Doctor, work to do.
So it was me who set off across the muddy battlefield towards the TARDIS, but it was the Doctor who opened the door, stepped inside, and slammed it shut behind her.
-- Moffat, Steven (2018-04-05). Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor (Target Collection) (Kindle Locations 3372-3375). Ebury Publishing. Kindle Edition.
I also love how the bandolier changed hands from soldier to soldier and in the end it turns back around with the Thirteenth Doctor giving back the bandolier, that her Eighth incarnation will take from Cass as a tribute to her and something the War Doctor will wear through his run.

Random Doctor Who Facts You Might Not Know, Part 26: Gallifrey at War Part 4
TW: classic Gallifrey at War death, destruction, and violation of autonomy
Cass Fermazzi's ship was crashing only because the Time Lords had indiscriminately opened fire on a group of ships.
The War in Heaven had 920 fronts across space and time.
The Twelfth Doctor assisted the General in the War Room while the first thirteen incarnations of the Doctor were working to freeze Gallifrey in a pocket universe.
The Beyond was a place created by the Last Great Time War where overwritten timelines got remembered. While here, Braxiatel was devoured by one of the Ravenous.
This specific Ravenous had once been Zara, a soldier in the Last Great Time War who was being forced to relive the explosion of a star she had gotten caught up in over and over again.
Lehena had Susan go back to 1963 Earth to collect the Hand of Omega. Unfortunately, she had been a Dalek duplicate, and the Daleks wanted to use the Hand to destroy Gallifrey. The Eighth Doctor recognized Lehena as a duplicate of a Time Lord in the year above him at the Academy that he had had a massive crush on.
The Venue Accords were the only attempt at a peace treaty made during the War in Heaven. Negotiations lasted a single picosecond, and they concluded that peace was impossible.
The Tharils, Porfue, and Krajonnu were all forcibly sterilized by Rassilon during the Last Great Time War to ensure that there would be no other time-traveling races to threaten the might of Gallifrey.
The Clock-People were humanoids with clockfaces instead of human ones. They were the remains of members of the Faction Paradox clinging to life after the War in Heaven. They could manipulate and corrupt others' biodata to insert themselves in their timelines.
During Remembrance of the Daleks before stopping at Harry's cafe, the Seventh Doctor was contacted by the same Time Lord messenger from Genesis of the Daleks (by some accounted named Jelpax, Valyes, Ferrain, etc). The Time Lord warned the Doctor of a counterstrike that was being made by the Daleks - part of the Last Great Time War. The Doctor became concerned for the Hand of Omega and ended up electrocuting a Slyther that the Daleks had been using to obtain it.
During the Last Great Time War, the Doctor and the Master were both hit with a degeneration gun, causing them to uncontrollably flick between all their different faces, including ones they hadn't even had yet.
Once Padrac had become a member of the High Council, he discovered that Gallifrey would be destroyed in the future, possibly by time war, invasion, etc. The only projected future where Gallifrey would survive was the future in which only Gallifrey remained, so Padrac set about to destroy the whole universe and convert their life force into regeneration energy to make the Time Lords immortal.
A tour operator took advantage of Gallifrey's fall after the War in Heaven to organize time tourism. They said that since the Time Lords and the Enemy used time travel to pre-empt each other, the War was continuously getting shorter, its climax getting closer and closer to present day.
The Tenth Doctor became embroiled in the Last Great Time War again when the War Master sent him telepathic summons. During this time, both of them were restrained and telepathically contained by the High Vectors (to be put on trial and probably erased), but the Master managed to escape and erase them before this could happen. The Master then retrieved the Doctor, and they parted ways.
Scarlette - one of the many who had at one point married the Doctor - was a child of the Faction Paradox's remembrance tanks in Pompeii.
Two other time wars that predate the Last Great Time War include the Halldon-Eternal skirmish and the Omnicraven Uprising.
