In 1979, Frank Zappa took a shine to an Eastern Indian rock/jazz violinist, L. Shankar. So much so that he produced an album with him, "Touch Me There." Not only does Frank produce, but he also co-writes half of the album and performs on one cut, "Dead Girls of London." So, not surprisingly, this disc sounds like much of the material Zappa was releasing around that time, even though it is technically a "Shankar" album. After obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Physics in India, Shankar moved to America in 1969 and earned a doctorate in ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University. Here he met jazz musicians Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Garrison, and John McLaughlin while working as a teaching assistant and concert master of the University Chamber Orchestra. In 1975 Shankar and McLaughlin founded Shakti, a pioneering, groundbreaking and highly influential east-meets-west collaboration, with a fluid sound that managed to successfully combine seemingly incompatible traditions. His first solo album, Touch Me There, was produced by Frank Zappa in 1979.[3] Shankar founded his own band - The Epidemics, in 1982, with the composer Caroline. He released three albums with the band. During the 1980s, Shankar recorded periodically as a leader, doing both jazz-based material and Indian classical music. His 1980 release of the album Who's To Know on ECM introduced the unique sound of his own invention, the ten-string, stereophonic double violin. This instrument, designed by Shankar and built by noted guitar maker Ken Parker, covers the entire orchestral range, including double bass, cello, viola and violin. He has recently developed a newer version of his instrument which is much lighter than the original.[3] 1990 saw Shankar co-producing a one hour film directed by H. O. Nazareth, which went on to be nominated for Best Documentary film at the Cannes film festival. Shankar worked on the score of the film The Last Temptation of Christ (1988),composed by Peter Gabriel, with his music ending up on both albums of the score - Passion: Music for The Last Temptation of Christ and Passion - Sources. He won a Grammy for his work on the latter in 1994. 1996 saw a Grammy nomination for the album Raga Aberi.[1] Shankar has performed on several of Peter Gabriel's records such as So and Us. Since 1996, Shankar has toured internationally with fellow-violinist (and his niece) Gingger as "Shankar & Gingger", garnering critical acclaim and popularity.[4] The two performed at events including the Concert for Global Harmony and Nelson Mandela's 80th birthday celebrations. Shankar & Gingger released their first DVD One in a Million in 2001. After a critically successful tour of North America, the DVD went to number 1 on the Neilsen Soundscan DVD charts and stayed there for four weeks.[3] In 2004, Shankar composed additional music with Gingger Shankar for John Debney and performed on the score for the film The Passion of the Christ (2004). Shankar has played with some of the greatest musical contemporaries of his time, including Lou Reed, Echo & the Bunnymen, Talking Heads, Frank Zappa, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Charly García, Jonathan Davis, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Stewart Copeland, Yoko Ono, A. R. Rahman, John Waite, Steve Vai, Ginger Baker, Toto, Nils Lofgren, Mark O'Connor, and Sting.[3] Shankar has been praised for his ability to mix Eastern and Western influences, assimilating Carnatic music with pop, rock, jazz and contemporary world music.[5] He admits "Ultimately, I would like to bring the East and West together. That, I think, is my role," he says. More recently, Shankar has used a new stage name, Shenkar, and has created recordings under this name. In 2006  2007, Shenkar provided the vocals for the opening credit music and other themes for all episodes of the hit TV series Heroes. He has been lately working in Jonathan Davis', Stephen Day and Ana Maria Lombo's next records.

“35 años de Drama Humano”
Tumblr media

YAYY <33333 thanks love!
15) A favorite song that is a cover by another artist: theres a few i could pick, ill knock it down to two. im honestly never a big fan of covers but i think Screamin' Jay Hawkins version of "Monkberry Moon Delight" is like fucking amazing. it has so much passion and the grit in his voice just tickles a part of my brain. Another one i love actually is "The Man Who Sold The World" by Nirvana.....very wallowing in my self pity-crawling into a drain vibes for me.
21) A favorite song with a persons name in the title: Interesting. Easy though! "Jolene" Dolly Parton, "Kathy's Song" Simon and Garfunkel, "Caroline Says II" Lou Reed :3 sorry i cant give 1 im very very pretentious

Songs From A Stolen Guitar Simon Joyner (Grapefruit) (released June 2022)
Tonight I went to see Simon Joyner and The Echoes at The Hideout.  Simon set up his merch table early and I was the second guy in line.  The first guy bought a copy of Grass, Branch & Bone (released in 2015) and I picked up a copy of his newest release as you see above.
The opening act was originally going to be Jessica Risker but instead it was   Akjai, who were certainly transfixing and totally unexpected.  It was a quartet and they played one song that lasted 35-40 minutes.  It featured a young black woman on vocals/ spoken word, a young white woman on violin and vocals along with two young men, one on stand up bass and the other on cello.  It was solid soundscapes and noise with the two women singing wordless vocals that, at times, more than resembled Yoko Ono’s early days with the Plastic Ono Band.  The string players madly fretted, bowed and beat their instruments and nary a word was uttered from the audience until the piece ended and then a roar (as much as a crowd of 30 can roar) erupted from the audience.
When Simon Joyner and The Echoes came on, I was absolutely certain they would do I Dreamed I Saw Lou Reed Last Night, after all,  the Echoes performed noise rock of their own.  At one point the drummer was using a violin bow on his drum set and the guitarist was filling Simon’s songs with reverb, feedback and plucked harmonic notes.  But alas, there was no dream involving Lou Reed.  The set opened with Sonny from Grass, Branch & Bone and then Simon proceed to sing virtually every track on his new album.  And what an album!  There are some great songs here: Caroline Has A Secret was the second song and it reassured me I was going to hear Lou Reed, after all, Lou has Caroline Says and now Simon has Caroline Has A Secret.  The only song Joyner might not have done from the new album was Yellow Bird #2 (and I say that only because I don’t recognize the title).  Everything else on the album, was played this evening.
There were two different copies of the new album: one on black vinyl, the other on “color vinyl” as Joyner told me.  I opted for color and I immediately took the album out to my car and didn’t really pay much attention to it until I got home.
It is a weirdly packaged album as you can tell by the photos.  The first is the album cover and the second photo shows the back of the album.  The vinyl has been shrinkwrapped on the outside of the album.  That’s certainly nothing I’ve ever seen before but once I got it home I began to understand why.  More on that later.
This is some of the most reflective shrink wrap I’ve encountered and it has to do with the fact that the album cover and back are done in red lettering on black background.  My eyes simply cannot read that especially with the shrink wrap reflecting everything under the sun.  After I pulled the album out from under the shrink wrap, there was no way I could see any of the lyrics or credits, so I pulled the shrink wrap completely off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The album cover is a glossy and it is a tip on deluxe jacket design which I’m not entirely sure you can see.  The vinyl is black/ red marble and you cannot tell that either just by looking at it.  See the photo of the LP below.
Tumblr media
Since it is 1:30 in the morning as I write this, I cannot take the album out and hold it up to the sun, so I’m holding it in front of the overhead light in my brother’s music room.  Now you can see some color!
Tumblr media
I then tried putting the album inside the album jacket and I never could get it to fit inside the album jacket.  That jacket is so tight that I actually pushed some of that glossy cover and creased it.  This is one of those albums in years to come that no one will ever find in nice condition.  I don’t think you can get the LP inside that jacket.  I’ll leave my vinyl just like they packaged it: outside the jacket.
As for the show, I thought it was excellent.  I think the new songs sounded excellent and I look forward to playing this record.  I’ve had two exceptionally enjoyable live shows since coming to Chicago, none of which were anticipated which makes it all the more exciting!

hello! love your blog!!, What have you been listening to recently??
Hi! Thank you! I’ll make a list of my recent ~new listens~. I feel like a lot of my recent songs have been sort of reminiscent or inspired by other bands I already like, if that makes sense?
1. Becoming More Like Alfie by The Divine Comedy (this is like a super catchy, kind-of-britpop song that reminds me a lot of A Girl Like You)
2. Spinning Wheel by Black Honey (I don’t often listen to newer bands but I try to!!! They formed in 2014 so I feel like that’s recent! I feel like their style is really unique compared to a lot of other bands around today. Reminds me a bit of The Cramps)
3. I Want You So Hard by Eagles of Death Metal (I always feel guilty listening to them but it’s so catchy!! I’m going to stop though. Seriously.)
4. Sabotage by Catherine Anne Davies (heard this on New Music Monday a few months ago, she kind of rips off both Suede and The Libs. The beginning guitar bit is straight off Dog Man Star and the guitar solo could literally be something Carl wrote, i’ve never heard someone co-opt his particular guitar style. But all music is derivative so it’s fine!)
5. Wisdom by The Brian Jonestown Massacre (obviously v influenced by the dandy warhols, which i’m sure they LOVE that comparison, but also reminds me a bit of later JaMC, very good chill background music)
6. Right Now by The Creatures (siouxsie sioux’s side project with budgie, discovered after i recently watched her cover of Caroline Says by Lou Reed, very swing-y which I of course love, always gets stuck in my head)
7. Babies by Pulp (i mean, it’s a classic. I’ve also been listening to Razzamatazz a lot)
8. I’m In Love With a German Film Star by The Passions (this is like a one hit wonder from the 80s but i love it and am really psyched to listen to the rest of the album, this made it onto my playlist called Bitch You’re Not the Main Character)
9. Love Shack by The B-52s (i’ve been obsessed with song recently, kind of sad bc it reminds me of the castle which is like a goth s&m 80s dive dance club we have in tampa, sooo catchy obviously, there’s a theme this month lmao)
10. Miss Teen Massachusetts by Skaters (another newish band i’ve been listening to, loveee this album, i think carl is like friends with them?, idk, but it’s a great song and pretty unique as well)

Lou Reed, Berlin
See, here’s how this album kills you:
It’s a concept album about the toxic relationship of two drug addicts, Jim and Caroline. Side 1 is dominated by Jim’s point of view, and he spits a lot of “my woman’s doing me wrong” kind of stuff. Then side 2 starts with Caroline Says II, which flips part I on its head and brings up the abuse Jim is heaping in her; in The Kids you hear Caroline’s kids get taken from her as she endures verbal abuse and the judgment of society, ending with actual cries of screaming children; in The Bed you hear about Caroline’s suicide attempt (I think it’s just an attempt!?). All of this makes you feel deeply for Caroline. Then the album closes, in majestically orchestrated fashion, back in Jim’s perspective, with Sad Song—and he’s feeling sorry for himself as he prepares to leave Caroline for good. But after going through the wringer with her, it all rings TOTALLY HOLLOW. And here you are, stuck in the head of the less sympathetic character as he says good riddance to the character whose circumstances have just broken your heart.
Only a drug addict could have told such a sympathetic, judgmental, insightful, alienating story about the effects of drug addiction. Brilliant, brilliant album.

Episode 1 & 2 - Show Notes
So here’s how Mistakes & Mixtapes works: Each month you get two mixtapes an our podcast is like the extended liner notes! Links below for both Orono’s and Adrienne’s mixtapes (Spotify playlists), and some extra notes on some of the songs we don’t get to in the first two episodes!
Orono’s Mixtape for December:
Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1 - Kanye West - Epic drive across Vancouver
We’re so Lost - Princess Chelsea
Springtime - Jeffrey Lewis - Walking around Kitsilano, listened to this song. It was getting dark, I was out to get some groceries… vibey as hell song, you’ll get it when you listen to it
Ghost Town - Kanye West Ft. PARTYNEXTDOOR
Femme Fatale - The Velvet Underground
You’re so Cool - Jonathan Bree - S-A-R-C-A-S-M (but also a poignant truthfulness to the whole song)
I Can’t Stop Your Memory - Of Montreal - Very emo, very relatable, ;-(
Say It Ain’t So - Weezer
Ottoman - Vampire Weekend - When I was going through my Vampire Weekend (tumblr indie child) phase, I watched this music video for Kid Cudi’s remix of this track, where he just raps over the instrumental of this song. It’s a really lowkey video, he’s just rolling a blunt and rapping to the camera. Put in this song cos my whole week reminded me of this song, also Kanye-Cudi
All Mine - Kanye West
Who Loves The Sun - The Velvet Underground - Didn’t mention this in the podcast but alongside Ye I listened to Loaded a whole lot. Great record, great song. I specifically remember daydreaming about listening to this song in the car on a sunny, cozy afternoon, but pretty sure we were just going to the supermarket on a gloomy day lol
Man On The Moon - R.E.M. - I love the movie with the same title as this song, starring Jim Carrey. It’s about Andy Kaufman, who’s an absolute legend. Also watched the Netflix documentary about the movie, “Jim and Andy,” which is really fascinating as well. I watched the two while we were on tour and I loved them so much I ended up rewatching them a few times… made my mom watch them with me as soon as I got back home
Wii Tennis - Splash Daddy - A very catchy, very lols song that YouTube recommended me
No Mistakes - Kanye West
Time - Pink Floyd
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Heroin - The Velvet Underground
Cortez the Killer - Neil Young, Crazy Horse - I found out about this song because of one of my favorite bands, Slint--on the deluxe version of Spiderland there’s a cover of Cortez the Killer that they did at some Battle of the Bands type event when they were teenagers, it’s so sick. The lyrics are trippy and spooky as fuck
Hound Dog - Big Mama Thornton - Somehow went down an Elvis Presley wormhole. This is the (apparent) original of his hit song Hound Dog
Mo Bamba - Sheck Wes - How the fuck did I not know about this song. One of the biggest songs of 2018 with over 250 million listens on Spotify, didn’t recognize it at all. Thanks YouTube recommendations, I was hooked instantly
Here - Pavement - I’ve been trying to read Infinite Jest for a very long time now (lol), I have 2 copies of it now (one in London, one in Japan) so that I won’t have to carry this hefty ass book around. Anyway I think I tried to read it again on this day, and I was reminded of the movie about DFW, The End of the Tour, starring Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg… when the credits roll they play this sweet cover of Here, so yeah
Happy Just Bumming Around - Voom - The title says it all
Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus - I just had this song stuck in my head for some reason, guess I relates to some of the lyrics for the first time??? lmao
Two Broken Hearts - Rivers Cuomo
She Fucks Me - Ween
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana - Another YouTube one, came across a video titled "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana Re-Mixed in a Major Key.” It’s sick, sounds like Weezer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVehv_LDWaE
Satellite - Guster - One of my favorite YouTubers Drew Monson did a cute cover of this song so shout out to Drewwwwww
Mistletoe Fixing You - GibiASMR
Angie Baby - Helen Reddy - Stumbled upon this song on Tumblr. It was a #1 in December of 1974, sung by Australian Singer Helen Reddy but I remember reading that it was originally written for Cher to sing. The lyrics are super cryptic and fun
Holiday - Weezer - I am on holiday.
Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond - ‘Tis a sports game classic. Was talking to a friend about drunken, glorious singalongs to this sweet tune
Adrienne’s Mixtape for December:
No Mistakes - Kanye West - Couldn’t remember what the song was that we listened to when Kuba drove us home from the Mint party, but knew it was Kanye so...NO MISTAKES.
Mint - Dumb - Dumb played at the Mint Records’ Ridiculously Early Xmas Party
Eyes Without A Face - Billy Idol - Urban Outfitters & the Space Jam Soundtrack, Cindy Crawford workout videotape) // Music Video that made his eyes fucked for three days.
Chinatown - Luna - the scene from the bus with the guy in Chinatown
Steely - Marnie Stern - “I always hear that song at the right time”
Beautiful Blue Sky - Ought - Orono brought sunshine to Vancouver
Seer - Woolworm - Vancouver’s sweethearts
This is America - Childish Gambino - we almost went to the show
Means That Much - H. Hawkline - Cate Le Bon affiliate, she’s my fave.
Say It Ain’t So - Weezer - It was a donut shop miracle
Thinning - Snail Mail - listened to this song a lot in 2018, including this particular day
Cold Blooded Old Times - Smog - Garbage Dreams covered this at Kat Gardiner’s “Little Wonder” book launch, and she told me that this song was originally part of the book but that part got edited out! I love little coincidences like that.
1880 Or So - Television - Just a real catchy guitar riff that I keep getting stuck in my head!
Girl You Want - Devo - Songwriting inspo song
Only You - Yazoo - We had a band practice and it turned into a sweet night of DJ “Cheffica” (Jessica Delisle from fellow podcast Retail Nightmares) cranking out hits and trivia, including this one.
Greyhound - Calpurnia - Garbage Dreams opened for Calpurnia the night before Finn Wolfhard’s 16th birthday. I like this song cause it talks about taking the Greyhound to Seattle, which is a very Vancouver thing to do.
Melty - Milk - MUSIC VIDEO! Milk played the Calpurnia show. *At the time of the podcast, there was no Milk on Spotify but now there is so I did a switcheroo! The song I played a million violins on is here.
Baba O’Riley - The Who - Covering the Who is the best thing I’ve ever done
Wrong Song - Nashville Soundtrack - I watched so much Nashville in a very short span of time. I did not become a better songwriter as I’d hoped.
Tame - Pixies - Supermoon covered this song on tour in August and I love the drum fill at the end, and that drum fill keeps haunting me in songs this month!
Nevermine - Forth Wanderers - Band writes songs like pen pals, made me think of us trying to make this podcast! And how we’ll have to write our theme song!
Permanent - Carla Sagan - Montreal band who are very cool. I was reminded of them because I re-watched this film the Voyagers, which is about Carl Sagan, and the ULTIMATE MIXTAPE // also this.
Destroyer - Lala Lala - listened to this song a lot in 2018 and on this particular day.
Postpartum Party of One - Dim Wit - Family xmas card from Dim Wit’s singer & guitar player Jeff - very sweet that he sent it to me, and also they are a very cool band! They wear wigs and lab coats and one time the drummer played the drums with his feet while he did a handstand and maintained it for like, a while.
Flickering Lights (Will Likely Fail You) - The Luyas - Big windstorm in Vancouver!
Twin Falls - Built to Spill - Christmas, etc.
Some Time Alone, Alone - Melody’s Echo Chamber - (Alone, Alone in a cabin)
Deep Red Bells - Neko Case - Saw Neko play live for the first time this year. She played this song from the album Blacklisted, which was one of my faves probably when I was 19!
Local Sports Drama - The Lentils - (Canucks RIOTS - a lil local sports drama every decade or so in Vancouver. This was mentioned in the bonus sports section of the podcast that did not make the cut.)
Satellite of Love - Lou Reed - My friend’s cabin has a pretty big record collection and every time I go there we have listened to Lou Reed’s “Transformer” in its entirety and it’s great.
Ploughing Out Part 1 - Cate Le Bon - “On the last day of the year, I’m just happy to be here”
