The Bug ft. Dis Fig — In Blue (Hyperdub)

The cover image on In Blue is a black and white shot of a fluorescent-lit subway tunnel receding into darkness. Stare long enough and you feel the pull to follow it into the depths. Is it an invitation to escape or the lure to a claustrophobic trap? The music created by Kevin Martin AKA The Bug and Felicia Chen AKA Dis Fig creates the atmosphere of both in a seductive weave of echoing bass and ethereal vocals. Martin’s work in the interstices of dub, industrial, dancehall and hip-hop as part of King Midas Sound and in collaborations with Mark Stewart and Keith Levene dovetails well with Chen’s style of disruptive electronica. On In Blue, Martin foregoes the open attack of his 2008 set London Zoo for a different kind of heavy, a claustrophobic soundscape for Chen’s voice to float in. The duo works the margins of genre to produce a beguilingly dark set of dystopian torch songs that they aptly name “tunnel sound.”

What we hear is the rattling of dubwise percussion, swathes of narcoleptic synths, backdrops of industrial noise and cavernous bass. Close, often so close it’s in your head, Chen incants promises of lust, betrayal and violence. The words are less important than the tone, now urgent, now languid to the point of apathetic acceptance. It sounds dangerous, decadent and desperately down. Always the background buzz that keeps coherence at bay and interferes with intuition. Yet the production is clean, Martin and Chen make every element count, they immerse you in a visceral fug of urban bleakness, the whispers from the alleys and doorways, the faded neon glamor of a red lit port district and always the drizzle of receding hope. On the instrumental “Forever” barely heard piano notes emerge from beneath train track beats and the huge echoing void of a 3 a.m. underground platform, your ride is approaching but seems to be taking an eternity to arrive. That queasy, post-binge feeling, alone, exhausted, ready to slump if there were a bench upon which to collapse, the promise of a threadbare mattress never so compelling and yet a fraught journey awaits to reach it. 

Martin and Chen create a world of liminal spaces on In Blue, the invitation to share them is persuasive and rewards are many. The Bug is a mercurial but known entity, his work always impressive, his choice of collaborators telling and Dis Fig shines in this setting. Hers is a voice and a vision you’ll want to hear more from.

LHE#4. Suite.

Cliff et Rosaline nous proposèrent d'installer notre campervan dans leur propriété afin d'y passer la nuit. Nous rejoignons ce dernier afin d'y partager un feu, des discussions. Enfin, surtout ses discussions. Nous l'écoutons partager sa passion pour les Antiques, faisons un tour de sa propriété, de ses caravanes. Dans le noir nous distinguons de nombreux bâtiments, sans rien voir vraiment, bien sûr. Au bout d'un moment, il nous propose de nous montrer des éléments de sa passion.

En fait, Cliff est un collectionneur d'objets rares et anciens (vinyles, vélos, perles rares). Nous restons, la plupart du temps, sans voix face aux objets qu'il nous montre, parsemés ici et là dans une de ses caravanes. Des centaines et des centanes d'objets. De vieux vélos. Des objets d'art déco, ses préférés. Il a de tout, de partout. Il est fan d'objets. Il les connait tous, par coeur. Juste, il ne sais pas trop comment vendre, car n'aime pas internet. Nous en reparlerons d'ailleurs ensemble, le lendemain. De son rapport au désert.

Nous les interviewerons autour d'un café le lendemain matin.Ce qui en ressort est, encore une fois, assez intéressant...Il y aurait beaucoup à dire sur ces deux personnes. Personnages atypiques de l'Ouest américain, voyageant quelques fois par an en motorbike et sidecar vers Quebec ou ailleurs, aillant toujours quelque chose à faire tout en laissant la vie couler. Ils se connaissent depuis 30 ans mais "sont de bons amis, parce que ça dure plus longtemps ainsi", dixit Rosaline. Cette dernière coupe 2x / semaine les cheveux dans un home de personnes âgées, en ville. Cliff n'aimait pas tant que ça son travail mais regrette l'activité que lui procurait ses deux maisons, bien qu'il ait plus d'espace ici qu'à L.A. C'est un couple de 2 personnes aux regards bons et doux. Il fait bon et silencieux dans leur quartier. Le silence n'est coupé que par le son du vent venant faire tourner les moulins (d'antiquité, ça va de soit), les montagnes sont visibles au loin.

Enfin, après des au revoir en bonne et dues formes: la voiture ne démarre plus. Déjà la panne au jour 5 de l'aventure… Mais Cliff et Rosaline, toujours présents, toujours calmes et souriants, répondent encore résents et rechargent la batterie défectueuse. Tout rentre dans l'ordre, nous reprenons la route en fin de matinée.

D'ici peu, si tout va bien. La Death Valley…

Beaucoup de mots et pensées à venir, de photographies évidemment bien que l'essentiel du travail soit ailleurs. Une terre riche d'informations - à l'interconnectivité évidente - où les données y ont été déposées il y a long afin de pouvoir au mieux processer les Temps présents, uniques dans l'histoire de l'Humanité.

Nous sommes arrivés à ce moment décrit dans l'Histoire, par celle des religions notamment mais bien au-delà, où ce qui est caché se révèle inexorablement. Où la Magie, qui n'est autre que l'Âme qui agit, opère.

Travailler et surtout intégrer cette parfaite et contradictoire dualité mexicaine originelle à l'image de Ometecuhtli & Omecihuatl, bien présente et transmise par les savoirs Mayas et tant d'autres, nous sera salvateur pour ce qui est à venir.

En collaboration avec l'ONDRAF, le Belgian National Orchestra organise FIREBIRD. Ce concert inédit, qui fait le lien entre les arts visuels et la musique, s'agit d'une réflexion poétique sur notre société de consommation, notre gestion de l'énergie nucléaire et les défis liés à l'élimination des déchets nucléaires. Quatre œuvres musicales du XXe siècle servent de point de départ aux images vidéo de la jeune artiste belge Eva L'Hoest. À travers son travail visuel, elle entame un dialogue avec des compositions de Glass, Stravinsky, Hillborg et Sibelius.

Plus que jamais, le débat sur l'énergie est animé aujourd'hui. Outre la question de savoir comment nous allons produire de l'électricité à un prix abordable à l'avenir, nous devons également faire face au passé. Après tout, notre utilisation de l'énergie nucléaire a produit des déchets radioactifs qui doivent être récupérés. L'ONDRAF est l'institution nationale chargée de protéger en toute sécurité les matières radioactives du monde extérieur, pendant des dizaines de milliers, voire des centaines de milliers d'années. L’on a du mal à se représenter un tel horizon temporel (les scientifiques parlent de « deep time »). Où en sera l’humanité dans quelques millénaires ? Y aura-t-il encore des êtres humains ? À quoi ressembleront-ils ? Comment garantir jusque-là la transmission des informations sur les sites de stockage ? À l’occasion du 40e anniversaire de l’ONDRAF, le Belgian National Orchestra apporte avec le spectacle FIREBIRD une contribution artistique au débat sur le stockage des déchets radioactifs.   Quatre œuvres musicales du XXe siècle sont le point de départ de FIREBIRD, un croisement audacieux entre les arts visuels et la musique classique. Le chef principal Antony Hermus ouvre la soirée avec Hymn to the Sun, un aria de l’opéra Akhnaten du compositeur minimaliste américain Philip Glass. Toujours sous la direction d’Antony Hermus, l’orchestre joue ensuite la Suite de l’Oiseau de feu de Stravinsky, une des œuvres les plus impressionnantes du compositeur russe. Après cela, place à Liquid Marble, du compositeur suédois Anders Hillborg, avant que le poème symphonique Le cygne de Tuonela de Sibelius nous plonge dans une ambiance totalement différente. Ces quatre chefs-d'œuvre sont le point de départ des images vidéo d'Eva L'Hoest. Les images vidéo sont projetées en grand sur un écran spécial au-dessus de l'orchestre et dialoguent avec l'événement orchestral. L’Adagio de la Symphonie n°10 de Mahler sera proposé par l’orchestre en guise de prélude à ce concert scénique.

Halaqat - in Arabic means multiple links and circles – aims to strengthen entanglements and build bridges between both regions. Diverse voices of emerging and renowned artists, cultural actors and experts are brought together to approach a number of themes from their own perspective.

From dance, projections, reflexions, mirrors, shadows, bodies, movements, Logos to analyzing how chess games played irl or against an AI could make us graciously and fiercly draw our path through the Illusion and our emotions.

Over the course of six weeks, spread over two periods, the artists are invited to Brussels to exchange, explore their body language, and perform. Their artistic proposals bring a rich range of contemporary artistic practices, and offer a new space of togetherness, where the intimate, and the political are highly interconnected. Their performances transgress the realities at the crossroads of multiple disciplines to open up new futures perspectives.

Haris sacrifice for Dr. Kelvin and the surprising and ambiguous closing shot of the film, were the sign for Marin to open all registries and to fulfill his name as a darkdub legend. Apart from a few more shreds of emotional sounds, the man started firing extremely intensely swelling basses at the public. Our eyes literally shaking in our greenhouses, the screen started moving unstoppable and the images we saw confused us even more. The overwhelming of music, story and theme came to a magistral highlight, especially because of the almost literally extra dimension added from Martin's equipment. Turns out it was the perfect lock to start processing the dense story."
