Die ersten Tage bleiben schwierig. Ein kurzer Strandspaziergang wird zwischen Einkaufen, Wäsche waschen und Kinderbetreuung zum Highlight. Immerhin schaffen wir es am Sonntag gegen Abend gemeinsam nach Castroville zu Phil’s Fish Market and Eatery. Ein sehr uriger Laden den uns unser Nachbar Klemens empfohlen hat. Und Fritz sorgt für kleine Freuden weil ihm die Clam Chowder ausgezeichnet schmeckt.

Am Montag wagen wir uns schließlich etwas weiter weg. Der Highway 1 ist nur bis Big Sur zu befahren und danach wg Überschwemmungen gesperrt. Die ursprünglich geplante Reiseroute entlang der Küste über den Highway 1 haben wir daher über den Haufen geworfen. Wir wollen aber trotzdem ein Stück die Küste entlang und fahren alle gemeinsam in einem Wohnmobil bis nach Big Sur und gehen dort auf die wunderbare Terrasse von Nepenthe für einen Mittagsimbiss. Auf dem Rückweg fahren wir noch durch Carmel und den 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach. Ein schöner Tag, aber Jacob ist danach ziemlich erschöpft und fiebert stark. Zur Entlastung vereinbaren wir, dass wir am nächsten Tag mit Johan nach Santa Barbara vorfahren. Das beschleunigt hoffentlich etwas die Genesung und sorgt zumindest für eine ruhigere Nacht.
