“King Charles is only 2 years apart from Carl Gustaf of Sweden too, who has also been king for 50 years. But his father died young, unlike king Charles mother.. Anyway I don’t think Charles will be abdicating any time soon.” - Submitted by Anonymous

One shouldn't write one's own epitaph. I hope people will remember me as one who did her best - and who wasn't an anachronism.
- Queen Margrethe II of Denmark
Margrethe II of Denmark celebrates her 50 years on the Danish throne. With the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II, it means that Margrethe II is Europe’s only reigning queen, in addition to being its longest-serving monarch.
She is followed only by her first cousin Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, who has been on his country’s throne for 48 years.
Margrethe II inherited the throne in January 1972 after the death of her father Frederik IX, making her the first woman in Denmark to take on the role of the reigning sovereign. When she was born - the eldest of three sisters - women were banned from taking the throne in Denmark. But a referendum in 1953 changed the law as successive Danish governments attempted to modernise the country.
She has since become one of the most popular monarchs in the world behind Elizabeth II, with an approval rating of over 80%. When she took the throne in 1972, only 45% of Danes supported the monarchy.
During her time on the throne, Margrethe II has been credited with modernising her country’s monarchy, allowing, for instance, her sons to marry non-royals.
Margrethe II is also known for her involvement in the country’s cultural scene, illustrating a Danish edition of The Lord of the Rings.
She is also a painter and costume designer, working with the Royal Danish Ballet and the Royal Danish Theatre.

Margrethe is abdicating as one of the longest serving monarchs and Charles has literally just got the job
And now Carl Gustaf will be the longest serving monarch in Europe, and he and Charles used to play together occasionally when young. There’s only 2 years between them, but 50 years of job experience
By mid-January, Victoria will be the longest serving heir in Europe (apart from maybe Liechtenstein, I don't know and I don't care to look). By the end of January, Fred won't be the newest monarch in the world anymore. Who said monarchies were stable and long-lasting?
