I stood atop the steps outside of the impressive church, a towering monument to the Christian faith. I surveyed the depressing scene. The rain continued to fall heavily onto the paved streets around Trafalgar Square. The wind was getting up, leaving the commuters gripping their umbrellas as the breeze threatened to blow their hastily-deployed parasols inside-out. Neither myself nor the elderly gentleman were equipped for the inclement conditions. In other words, I hadn’t brought a bloody brolly. Partly I find that I carry far too much kit & caboodle around with me as it is. My waterproof jacket would keep the worst of the elements out and (hopefully) protect my beloved Canon 5D mkII if I stuffed it under my lapel between shots. But what about the old man? To be wet and therefore cold and potentially of ‘no fixed abode’ on the cusp of a London winter in the autumn of your days would not be something to take lightly. “So you’re actually kicking us out into this...?” I said to the church usher as he stood steadfastly next to the wrought iron gate, gripping it with every intention of locking it shut the moment the old fella had shuffled an inch over the threshold. “Yes, i’m afraid so!” he said with a wince, mocking his pathetic attempt at displaying an ounce of concern. “Ah, really? That’s very Christian of you!” I said sarcastically as I turned away in disgust. I continued to take pictures of the older gentleman as he alighted the steps, the church usher rapidly bolting the gates with impressive determination, lest an afflicted member of the congregation blight his hallowed temple for a moment longer that was strictly necessary. “Do you want a cup of tea, mate?” I asked the old man. It seemed like the least that I could do, given the images of him that I had captured without too much more than an inquisitive murmur from him. He replied in the affirmative. And so we shuffled at a snail’s pace towards Charing Cross station and towards the small selection of corporate chain cafes and eateries with questionable fare contained therein....
