Interlude 3: The comfort of a familiar sound
Knock.
Dariq walked across the streets of Sandand. Today would be a great day; and tomorrow even a greater day.
Knock. He looked at all the people in the commercial district: they didn’t know what was about to happen. They didn’t know tomorrow would be the day that would change everything.
Knock. He stopped knocking on the ground with his cane. He found the spot. It was in front of an artifact’s shop, one that was abandoned a long time ago; the owner’s either died or left Sandand: one couldn’t live in this city without earning a great share of money. Dariq hated how this city drained everyone to their last penny, until they turned into a walking corpse, starved for money. The citizens didn’t even know it, but they would find out eventually about their grim fate. But that was about to change.
Dariq stood in front of the door of the abandoned shop for a while. He observed the people around the streets: there was an old man reading the newspapers that every now and then took a gaze at him; he could be as much a spy as an old man who hated other people who weren’t like him. He couldn’t take risks either way, he cast a spell of sleep person onto him. The old gentlemen fell asleep without even resisting the spell, nothing to worry about then. He kept looking around for suspicious people, although it was hard with all the people walking around the streets: camouflaging the static persons that were around the area. A couple of young unusual men passed in front of him: a young clumsy boy with dragonfly wings alongside another young man who kept looking at a compass in his pocket. The fae were quite unusual in Sandand, so he prayed that a noble wouldn’t catch an eye on him. The other man though, seemed to wear some curious clothes and had a quite expensive looking compass; he could have stolen it from him in an instant, but he didn’t look noble at all. Either way they were unusual, and that always meant a problem, but perhaps, not his problem.
He got to the conclusion that nobody was spying on him. He reached his hand to the door when suddenly a hand rested on his shoulder.
-And what might you be doing young boy? – A slender guardsman was behind him, with a dagger behind his back. They got him. Or so they thought. He turned around, ready to take a hit and put him to sleep, when he realized.
-It’s not funny, Phezan. – Darik sighed. The slender guardsman was nothing more than an illusion covering what was a young girl, a bit shorter than her, with a sand-like hair. She was malnourished and appeared to be younger than she really was, although her attitude didn’t help to make people think otherwise. – I see you’ve tracked me down, right? I assume you want to join me in this little adventure of mine?
She nodded.
-Yes, but of course! We both know that you alone would get impaled, murdered and hanged in less than an hour! – She smiled proudly. – Luckily for you, Afnel told me where you were heading to. You don’t have to be so mysterious around your officials when the fall of this city is about to come!
-You’re right Phezan, sorry about that. – He pat her head. – Next time I will tell you. If there’s a next time, that is. For the moment, shall we enter inside the workshop before I tell you what’s our plan?
Phezan got in front of him and opened the door with a lockpick. She always made it look so easy. She was so young yet so talented. Dariq reminisced for a bit of the day when he found her. Bruised up, shaking in the ground and with a twisted arm. Her father was a noble, and her mother a Fae. That’s where she got the sand-like hair, always seeming like it was a flowing sand stream.  His father beat her mother to death, after putting Phezan to sale after he played enough with her. She was a slave for two years, physically abused just at the age of seven. When he and Afnel found out about the slave auction she was being put on again, they rushed over and killed all of their masters. One would think that Phezan would never recover from the trauma; but surprisingly she started talking to Dariq and Afnel only a few days after they took her in. 8 Years had already passed from those times, and Phezan had grown out to be a fine girl, able to fight for herself, and alongside Dariq. However, she lacked his firm hand and his murderous instincts: perhaps she was too young, or perhaps this world was not made for her. He never forced her to join him, she just started tagging along, but he was hoping that, after tomorrow, she may start living the life she really wants. However, this story was one of many reasons that assured him that any noble man needed to be exterminated.
-The door is open Dariq! What are you waiting for? – As always, she was incredibly fast with lockpicking. The door was wide open and nobody even noticed it. Dariq headed inside the workshop.
The building was stuffed with old artifacts that were obviously abandoned more than a decade ago. One could imagine the past of the shop: an old man with his wife taking care of their old passion dream, selling their crazy inventions to the noblemen that crossed the town. That would be until, one of their artifacts turned out wrong, and a nobleman, maybe ashamed of exhibiting such bungle, would demand the closing of the shop. It could also have been the high taxes that were rising in Sandand, or the natural death of the owners, but somehow, he had the hunch that the first option was the correct one. The old shop had a scent of bicarbonate and humidity, due to the time that it had passed before the first one was replaced. Phezan was walking around the shop curiously, inspecting all sort of artifacts, when she asked:
-So… What are we looking for? – She had found an old magnifying glass that instead of enlarging objects it would widen them, making Dariq look all round.
-We are looking for confirmation of the plans of the city. But this shop is not our objective. – He took his crane out again. Knock. Nothing. – It would appear that the owners of this establishment used to have a hideout near here, where they would carry some sort of smuggling to the lower ends of the city. -Knock. Nothing. – If my assumptions were correct, this hideout would lead to a large connection of tunnels underneath of Sandand. – Knock. Still nothing. – If we could get to those tunnels and confirm that Sandand was indeed built above the architecture of an even older civilization, our theory would turn out to be true, and we could carry out tomorrow’s plan perfectly. Some may die, yes, but the ending justifies the means. We’re not heroes after all. – Knock. Bingo. He uncorked the bottom of his cane, to reveal a long blade that he used to pierce through the wet wood. Tearing through some planks showed him what he wanted to see: a tunnel.
-Are you sure you want to do this Dariq? – Mumbled Phezan. – I know that this means a lot to you, but you do know how many lives are at stake here right? I mean, for all I know, half of the city’s population could die tomorrow. Is it really worth it Dariq?
-I told you, if you don’t want to be a part of this you can leave. I gave you the money to pay a scholarship in the academy. You are smart, and you can do great things with that head of yours. Me and Afnel? We belong here. – He jumped inside of the tunnel.
-I also belong here! – She followed. – I don’t wanna leave you guys! I owe everything to you… I need to repay it somehow…
-You don’t need to repay anything. Your future is a more than enough gift to us. Now, if you don’t want to be part of this, you should leave.
-Hmph! Fine then, go rot in those tunnels of yours! – She didn’t jump into the tunnel, and disappeared from Dariq’s sight. – Also, don’t come late! I’ve baked a great meat pie for you both, dumbass! – The door closed. That was better.
He lit up a small flying flame with a trick of his, and he started to explore these lost catacombs. There were carvings on the wall. A lot of them. He couldn’t read any of them unfortunately. Afnel knew a lot more of the history of Sandand, Dariq never cared that much, as long as his goal was fulfilled. The only thing he knew was that there had to be some way that the Sandand he knew would stay on its feet with all these tunnels underneath it. And he was sure of another thing: this network was still being used, but not by bandits, nor smugglers: they were leftovers of rotten fruit on these ruins, no poor man would be able to afford this many fruit. This was a noble’s doing.
“So now they’re using even OUR tunnels to their advantage. What a fucking scum.” Thought Dariq. He kept creeping around these complicated passages, until he found something very special. What he had been searching for. An enormous pillar of sandstone was in front of him, in a very vast and empty room. Few statues were surrounding the pillar: they appeared to be the pillar’s guardians. Though immobile, they imposed a great fear on him, big as a goliath and hard as a golem, these things had probably been alive a long time ago. The pillar was majestic, with ornaments all around it, that reassured Dariq that this was what he was searching. There were 4 more of these. But having found one was proof enough of Afnel’s theory. He could head home now.
Suddenly, he heard footsteps:
-Is someone there? Let this be remembered, the secret noble network is only available for people capable of showing their enormous wealth at an eye’s notice! – Scum. It was just scum. And it was only one man. He decided to show himself.
The man was startled, he jumped back and reached his hand into his puny short sword trying to defend himself. He clearly wasn’t trained for battle, probably a noble guard that inherited the position from his father. He made sure to impose true fear on him. He turned off his small flame and darkness engulfed the whole room.
-So you decide to show your face, you pathetic rat? – Said Dariq, who walked slowly to the young man. He honed his cane with his metallic arm prosthetic to make a constant creepy sound as he closed in. – You really think you can come here and claim OUR network as yours? To claim OUR city as yours? To claim OUR souls as yours? You’re nothing. You’re a monster that needs to be eradicated, and I’ll do the honors for you. – The man was so scared that he didn’t move nor say anything. He just held his sword high. Dariq didn’t want to kill him, but he couldn’t always contain himself. He rushed towards him and used the wooden part of the cane to knock him down. The guard fell to the ground, and Dariq sank the Cane’s blade.
Knock. A scream.
Knock. Another scream.
-I’ll never forgive any of you.
Knock. Silence.
He was dead. The cane was stuck on his heart. A shame, he wanted to have more fun. Phezan was lucky to not come. Dariq didn’t want Phezan to see this. He took the cane out of the guard’s lifeless body and turned back to where he came from.
Dariq was excited for tomorrow. He was excited for Sandand’s last day.

Interludio 1: The Hero
The hero’s beginning.
It was already late at night when Noah decided to make his escape.
He had it planned since the day he met Qatsi, to get out of this town and to find himself for once. Seeing someone so fragile, yet so brave, made him realize what he was lacking, even when he confronted his father. Yes, he did face him off, but he ended up with a scar in his hand, one that would probably never go away. It was his shame; he couldn’t bare looking at it without doing something about it. This town needed a hero, but he was not the one who they needed. Not yet at least. Although, he had to do one last thing before he escaped.
It was late at night, 2 hours after midnight. The second moon had already risen, and the sky had a shade of purple you could only see at this specific moment. The town was all silent, and the streets, even though messy due to the recent chaos, were calm and empty. That monster did a number on various buildings, although the only one who claimed to have seen that beast were him and LeChèf, who already made his way onto a western city, to pursue his dream to become a top-class chef. He exited the house, without making a sound, but not too careful, since his father was on the dungeon due to the recent conflicts. His brother was still there though. He didn’t want to wake him up. Not yet.
He felt guilty. He felt like he wasn’t the brother he was supposed to be. He’d probably be better with someone as Qatsi, or the black haired one.
“Reliable. Brave. Smart. Understanding. Daring.” He wasn’t any of these things, he thought. Noah shook these thoughts off and kept going, to his one and only stop. The place where that “beast” came from, or at least, where it emerged from. The house closest to the ruins was completely destroyed. An old couple of old men lived there, and blamed the mayor for not taking care of the “earthquakes” that crumbled their house to dust. Noah knew it had been no earthquake, but everyone else thought it was. The old men however, seemed to play dumb when asked about the beast. He probably knew something he did not want to tell.
However, he made it to the ruins, and headed downstairs. He hated these stairs. He had to walk through this hallway every time something hideous happened. Usually at midnight, even when he was a toddler, though, he had his father back then. It had been 2 years since the last time.
Under these ruins, lived a monster. A monster so scary that had to be locked up under an old dungeon that was used for torture centuries ago. A monster who killed. The same monster that took his mother from him.
He reached out to the jail where the monster was locked up in. The creature at first didn’t notice him, but when Noah coughed, the gloomy figure turned its head and looked at him in the eyes:
“Noah, is that you, my dear?” – Said the monster. Its eyes filled with a deranged and distorted hope. – “Did you see the snake? Five days ago, one of the hands came! One of the hands! One of the hands!” – It kept repeating the same sentence, like a broken record.
“I saw it…” – Words struggled at the end of his throat. Saying that word was harder every time. “Mom, I need to ask you something, what…what are those beasts?”—He didn’t expect a literal answer. She always talked in strange verses, or formulated weird enigmas.
“Do you mean… The scarlet beasts?” –She seemed awfully interested. She didn’t look so sane, and clear-minded ever since the incident. – “They are the manifestation of our crimes, of our sins. The Scarlet Tree takes human lives as price of dirtying this world with our earthly desires. It asks for cleansing, Noah. That’s why I had to…”—
“That’s enough.” –Said Noah. He didn’t want to hear it again. The thought of her mother eating his older brother was enough to make him puke. He didn’t want to hear it again. – “Then, I’ll let you know: -- He inhaled; he was ready. –I’m going on a journey. A journey I may not come back from. I am going to find that Scarlet Tree, and I’m going to rip away its roots. I’m going to cut it, burn it, and let it rot wherever it is.” –She looked scared, worried. –But before that, I need to become stronger. I need to be a hero, a hero capable of saving everyone I see. I’ll be brave, I’ll kill that tree, and… Only then, I’ll be able to save you, and save this family.
She didn’t say a word. Her eyes open-wide, in silence. Noah didn’t expect an answer. He turned his back, said goodbye, and headed for the exit. As he was exiting, he thought he was a fool to have though this was a good idea. He was a buffoon, who thought too much of himself. He was not a destined hero, nor someone with a powerful desire, like those on the tales, or Qatsi. He was just a human. Perhaps he wasn’t made for this. But maybe, just maybe-
“Please, take care”. –He froze, after those words, he heard his mother move again. To the back of the room, facing the wall. Feet stuck in the ground; he pinched his skin. He was awake, he didn’t imagine it. He did not know what to say, but perhaps, the best thing was saying nothing.
He felt a relief on his shoulders. He didn’t know why, but he did. He exited the dungeon. The last moon had gone up as well, and a dark purple sky had set on the night sky. He was ready to go. He only had to say goodbye to his brother, but Noah knew he would understand him. He would send him help and money every week, so he could survive alone with his father.
Noah decided not to say goodbye to his father. He understood he became like this due to the situation with his mother, but that did not make him less guilty. After considering various options, he opened the front door at his home and headed to the bedroom. With all the equipment ready, he woke up his brother with a smile. A sudden burst of confidence was born inside him; one that would help him turn into the hero his brother wanted him to be. “Thanks. Mom”.
He pat his brother’s head gently, until he woke up.
“Wake up, dumbass. Your hero’s gonna make a legend out of himself.”

regarding sumeru...
hi friends! this is my quick take on what's happening with hoyoverse, the general design of sumeru, and the stream of racism allegations that have resurged recently. i think it's worth trying to analyze why hoyoverse designed sumeru the way it looks like so far (and because i want to add my two cents to the discourse lol).
here are some context:
hoyoverse is a chinese game dev company
sumeru is inspired by the people, religions, architecture, and cultures of south asian countries (india, nepal, pakistan, etc.) and countries in SWANA* (egypt, iran, the UAE, turkey, etc.)
we are only getting a portion of sumeru and 3 new characters in the 3.0 update
here are some of the main problems players have with the current status of sumeru:
the combination of the different countries and their cultures and religions
the lack of diversity
the general lack of effort put into sumeru's design, given the release of the fatui harbingers and the outstanding quality demonstrated in the interlude teaser
in order to address these concerns, i think it's important to think about hoyoverse and the stances its employees have on this issue. this does not mean i am playing devil's advocate or excusing the company's ignorance, but i think it's critical to understand the potential root causes.
because hoyoverse is based in china, their standard of diversity is much, much lower compared to that of other countries, such as the US and canada, which experience decades worth of immigration and are known as melting pots. coupled with east asia's internalized colorism and xenophobia, mainland folks simply do not get much exposure to POC. this means two things. first, they might not understand why global players are so adamant about POC representation and diversity – the developers may not even know how to go about bringing diversity because what they think is diverse is different from our understanding. second, hoyoverse will prioritize its east asian, particularly its chinese, fanbases, and let's be real, any character that's not flour-pale will not be as popular with the latter.**
the lack of popularity then becomes a financial issue for hoyoverse. hoyoverse generates a large portion of its money from the wishing system. it's thriving because so many people whale for 5-star characters and C6-ing them. if hoyoverse's largest community stops pulling for characters, they won't be able to keep up and maintain high quality with future productions (both for genshin and other games).
i promise y'all that there are at least a few designers and staff members in hoyoverse who want diversity in the same way that we do, who want unique characters with intricate lore, and who are willing to put in the effort. but at the end of the day, they are just designers and many of them will be forced to revise darker-skinned character drafts.
besides literal money, another currency that hoyoverse is limited to is time. one thing that i think hoyoverse hasn't disappointed fans in is the consistency of the game. there is always new content, and even during its hiatus in response to the shanghai mass quarantine in may, they provided mini events and extended the banners to make it more accessible for F2P players. while having constant releases is wonderful and retains interest, that means quality will be compromised in other aspects.
in this case, it means the design and intention put into sumeru. to elaborate, by design, i don't just mean character designs (though this is debatable because the community has a pretty bad habit of hating new characters, especially 5-stars, but then growing to love them) but also the geography, architecture, and personality of sumeru.
as sumeru is marketed right now, its concept is that it is a collage of all the aforementioned countries and their respective cultures. unless sumeru is separated into geographical sections to represent the distinct cultural influences, to mish-mash these countries' religions, peoples, and traditions together is disrespectful and reinforces harmful monolithic stereotypes.***
sumeru will be a literal game-changing region because it has so much information to bring: in-depth lore, the dendro element and everything that entails, etc. this is a pivoting point, so that's why it's frankly saddening and anticlimactic for hoyoverse to not put in the effort. i understand that in update 3.0, we will only be getting a taste of sumeru, so while it's hard to judge the production of the region with the limited information we have right now, it's important to push for diversity and representation while we still can and also give hoyoverse time to make the necessary changes correctly.
to summarize: i don't think hoyoverse is being intentionally or actively racist. i think it comes from a place of ignorance, so i personally think it's better to approach this problem with constructive criticism than to send hate messages to hoyoverse staff members who work so hard regardless. if we don't tell them why and what they're doing is wrong, then the game developers won't know how to resolve the concerns. furthermore, sumeru hasn't officially come out yet, and what we have seen in the teasers will be more refined and polished in the released product. i don't think we need to panic or retaliate, i just think we should remind hoyoverse so that they don't put representation on the back burner.
as for solutions, sending messages through different media platforms, emails, etc. has worked in the past (e.g. during genshin's 1st anniversary).**** but it doesn't stop there. just like every other region released so far, sumeru isn't just limited to the 3.0 patch; we will continue getting content for it for the rest of the game, so unless we see results, we have to be consistent with the feedback. that looks like continuing to send messages until we see tangible, permanent change, not being complacent in the lack of POC representation, and more.
i probably missed a lot of great points out there, but this is all my last brain cell can come up with. please repost and add your own thoughts because the more ideas, the better! (if you want to repost this onto other platforms, just make sure you credit me!!)
hope everyone gets their kazuhas, heizous, and yoimiyas in 2.8!!!
--
*i recognize that the name "the middle east" has colonial roots, but because the region is so popularly known as such, i'm using it so that no one gets confused. edit: thanks to @najmaviper for pointing this out, but a decolonized term that is often used is SWANA. you can find more information at the initiative's website: https://swanaalliance.com/about#:~:text=S.W.A.N.A.%20is%20a%20decolonial%20word,contain%20and%20dehumanize%20our%20people.
**this is not to say that all individuals from south asian or SWANA are darker-skinned, but it's crucial to push for change to help gamers who are tan, brown, and black. this is especially important to do with games as popular as genshin impact because it can cause ripple effects.
***here's a tweet that states this argument eloquently: https://twitter.com/timelysumeru/status/1546500639970435072
****i know another method that has worked has been leaving a bunch of bad reviews in app stores, but i don't think it's applicable right now since we know so little about sumeru. if the problem persists, sure, but i think sending bad reviews right now just antagonizes the situation even further.

hello!! im auditioning for Tuck Everlasting and i need a song good for Winnie Foster! my range is G3-C6 (obviously the higher part of the range wouldn’t be needed for this specific show) !! preferably a 32 bar cut but if it’s a little over it won’t matter ! thank you so much :)
That's so exciting! Such an underrated musical. My first instinct is Before It's Over from Dogfight (from "I never even knew a world was waiting" til the end). The Secret of Happiness from Daddy Long Legs ("The secret of happiness is living in the now" to the end). The last reprise of When Will My Life Begin from Tangled ("Look at the world so close and I'm halfway to it) if you cut the musical interlude is a great 32 for Winnie. Naughty from Matilda may work, too ("In the slip of a bolt" to the end).
Break a leg!

2.7 Xiao Rerun! + Archon Quest thoughts
Got C1 Xiao! Won the 50/50. Hoping to get Klee soon and maybe Kazuha if I can get lucky enough. If not, I can always wait for his re-rerun. On my way to C6 Xiao.
I have a decent Vermillion Set. 80/150 with 2.2K ATK. It's okay, but I can definately do better. So I've been farming in between farming for the new free 4* Bow for my Aloy.
As for the Archon Quest... Spoilers in the Read More (Including Yelan's Story Quest.
AFIOHeHSEOHFOSEGOaIPFJSHP
Xiao, my beloved. The characters were all lovely and I'm starting to appeciate Yanfei more. Itto and Shinobu were great and I hope I'll be able to get Shinobu once she gets to the Standard Banner since I won't be pulling on Itto's banner.
Yelan's great too, but I have Xingqui and would rather not get a 5* when I'm not super excited for them. She's too close to Yae/Ayato's role as a behind the scenes dectivive, so Story Quest wasn't doing it for me. I actually sympathized with Zhiyi a lot more than I was interested in Yelan.
I did C6 Barbara, so might fully build her soon.
Anyway, back to Xiao!
The last scene where he was like "General Alatus, Fall In" was so good. I can't stop thinking about it.
And Zhongli came in clutch, planning on pulling (again) for him when his rere-rerun comes and hope i win the 50/50 this time round. My Xiao needs a better Shielder than Diona and Zhongli seems pretty good from the Battle Event, so yeah.
But like, I really thought he was going to die. I knew Honkai kills and Signoria already died, so I was mentally preparing for it, while hoping something/someone would help.
It was a literal Deus ex Machina, but I think it was somewhat foreshadowed within the scene itself and it was a good moment for Xiao, so I'll let it pass. For a Xiao!Main this Archon Quest/Interlude was the best.
I also liked the delayed release of the Quest, since it helped make it feel like it actually took place over a long period of time, which it was trying to feel like.

Lin Hai is a genius.
You may know of Lin Hai, the composer of The Untamed soundtrack.
Well, let me show you one little way in which the man did our WangXian themes justice.
So: Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji have their own musical themes. And lyrical analyses have been made about them and I wholeheartedly agree. Those lyrics are la creme de la creme.
This, however, is about a little motif that you can find in both 不忘 sung by Wang Yibo and  曲尽陈情 sung by Xiao Zhan.
Bu Wang:
In Bu Wang, the second line of Yibo’s verse is F3 E3 D3 A3 G3 C4 A4.  In solfege, the bolded part is La Mi Re So Mi.
Qu Jin Chen Qing:
In Qu Jin Chen Qing, the flute interlude motif between the first chorus and the second verse is A4# D5# A5# G5# C6# A5#. The bolded notes in solfege are also La Mi Re So Mi.
I believe Qu Chen Qing’s motif is actually half notes, but in quarter notes it compares better so I put them both in quarter notes. (I’m not actually great at rhythm but I’m 90 per cent sure there are no funky surprises there.) The first mark of the motif being compared is marked with a fingering.
Tumblr media
In Bu Wang, the motif is repeated in the verses, but it is not repeated in Qu Jin Chen Qing. This doesn’t make its appearance any less significant. In fact, it’s a small detail, but a super neat way for Lin Hai to once again connect WangXian through music. When he said he was inspired by love, he wasn’t kidding at all. Major kudos to him for his attention to detail.

Overall Rating: A+
Would You Recommend:
Every De La album is great. They have such an interesting groove that always makes my head bob. This album has a ton of interludes, much like 3 Feet had, but they help the album flow along smoothly rather than be a distraction. This is the VMP reissue, and it sounds great to me. This is an excellent listen.
Don't take my word for it listen for yourself and tell me what you think.

turnkeyborosic replied to your post: Ha ha, narrative parallels between how C1 opened...
Hey did you post more? You talking debtor knight on this? Not trying to pressure; trying to make sure I didn’t miss out
You’re fine, no worries.  I’m definitely talking Debtor Knight, just laughing at how I resolved the first step of starting a new chapter where I was doing a time skip.  I got an even better idea to smoosh an interlude idea I wanted/needed to do into C7′s start to help smooth it out even more, so all the pluses today.
Now it’s time for dinner and more typing on C6.  Fingers crossed really hard for a post this weekend.

Interlude 2: Cordura
Moon no hablaba mucho.
-Esperó no sonar brusco.
Emi le miró sorprendida. No se esperaba una pregunta sobre ella. ¿Era eso bueno? No tenía ni idea.
-Verás, soy una persona bastante aburrida… -Dijo Emi con una triste sonrisa. -Mayormente me dedico a dibujar y a buscar plantas nuevas. A veces capturo insectos…
-Volvió a reír.
-Silencio. – Y si me preguntas a mí.
“Cordura”.

Cover Album Facts - Sparkle Tuesday 3.30
Updated 09.16 (previously 05.17)
A large variety of songs have altered/extended instrumentals. However, Here’s 2 Us (C1) and Lonely Hearts Club (C1) contain self-made recreated instrumentals. This was not seen again until Telephone (C5).
The Best of Both Worlds (C1) was originally released as a duet before “V.I.P” came out.
More to Life (C1) was recorded less than a week after hearing the song for the first time, resulting in some incorrect vocals.
One Last Time (C1) and no tears left to cry (C1) did not appear in the karaoke album as without lead vocals sounded horrendous to the singer.
PIECES OF LOVE (C2) and BEHIND THE MASK (C2) we’re not recorded in full as ST was unable to correctly pronounce the words/reach the lower register.
The Reason Why (C2) was the first ballad released by ST.
A handful of songs were recorded, then scrapped for Undercover (C3) because of the poor result. Some unused songs include: Handmade Heaven, Knowing Me, Knowing You, The Feels, and Die Young.
EXCLUSIVE: AVA MAX (C4) does not include “H.E.A.V.E.N” due to the lack of vocals.
Wild Thing, On Somebody, and Alone, Pt. II by Ava Max were also partially recorded but cut from both (C1) and (C5).
Ava Max is the most featured artist with 18 different tracks by her and appears of the most albums (4 out of 5).
The standard version of Discovered (C5) contains the widest variety of artists being 11 (Telephone equaling 2 artists) and the previous highest of 7 on Not Covered Up (C1).
Steal Your Heart (C5) is the first cover song by a male artist, Ross Lynch.
Despite the file being created in May 2020 (before any album was even created), Scab & Plaster (C6) was finally released in May 2022.
Full Coverage (C6) is the first album to contain unreleased songs by the original artists. I.E Miss Y and Scab & Plaster by MARINA.
Maybe You’re The Problem (C6) was recorded less than 12 hours after the original songs release. It is also the only cover song to be posted onto YouTube.
The cover art for Full Coverage (C6) was the original cover art for the 3rd full album “Goddess of Love”.
The original version of Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart (C7) went missing before being released, leading to a re-recording. Soon after the album’s release, the original track appeared back into the album files.
TWICE is the first artist to have an Exclusive album covered by Sparkle Tuesday twice.
Unlike (C2), Exclusive: TWICE 2 (C8) contains an intro track, two interludes, and outro track.
The record for most tracks covered by one artist was Ava Max at 19 songs. This was recently beaten by TWICE which now hit first place with 28 songs featured in Sparkle Tuesday cover albums.

Calculation: Part 2.5, Scattered Notes While at Work
So I’m at work right now, and there’s no one else here (since I’m usually the first in in the morning, and I have no student assistant today), so I think I’m going to take some time to really think about some thoughts I was having last night.
Interestingly enough, though many problems can be simplified - this just may be one where the complexity is preserved, despite the transformations I’m about to make...
I was doing some of the daily chess.com puzzles, trying to practice my calculating skill, and I think I’m getting better at it! The idea of analyzing all of the possible moves first, and then simply switching around the order, is very effective. I have noticed a few things however:
It is very important to calculate the squares for which pieces can move in subsequent turns. I know how a knight moves for the first two moves only, I’ll try to figure out 3 very soon. With bishops, queens, and rooks (long range pieces, as I will now call them), since each one can theoretically end up on any square within two moves (except for bishops, they can move to any square of their color after only two moves), it is more important to look at paths and open lines. Do not forget captures to end up at the arrival point!
Very important, also, to be able to move the location where capture happens. (For example, say a rook was aiming down the h-file at your king, then you play h6, and if a capture were to happen, then the g7 pawn can defend)
We need some sort of system where we can count threats and immediately be able to rule out certain moves
Whoever has the move is very important - hence moves that gain tempo should also have some factor in the calculation
Also another thing to consider is how the defense of each piece changes as the shape of the board changes. The threats may change based on how the pieces move, and our goal is to be able to predict these in advance without having to actually calculate
It is good to “see the shape of a piece,” (for lack of a better phrase), or to view each piece not only as itself, but all of its possible attacking squares, as well as future attacking squares. For example, when I look at a knight, I see the 8 squares that it can attack - but also, I try to see if my knight is in any one of the “forking positions” with another piece (2x4, 2 apart, 4 apart, 4x4, 3x5, etc), because this means I can capture in 2 moves. For bishops, I look at all of the squares of that color, and for rooks or something of the like, I look at the cross it’s on, but then at open paths that aren’t blocked (or where silly captures don’t happen)
Undefended pieces
Whether pieces can capture back or not
The entire idea with this approach is to try to plan out the next 6-7 moves until a decisive moment is reached, but not by trying move sequences. The idea is to immediately identify all of the possible moves, all of the future moves, and then string together a few in a sequence that makes a lot of sense.
Let us briefly make a list of factors that we should consider and add up, and then try to establish a very primitive model that we will develop into something more substantial later.
Threats that gain tempo (checks)
Threats in general (including ones that attack 2 or more pieces)
Value of the pieces being traded
The squares which the pieces are traded on
The blocking/opening of lines
Moves that add threats or remove threats (or both)
I will append to this list later as I see fit.
An interesting thought just occurred to me - what if, to save time, as the game goes on (even whilst my opponent is calculating), to think of all of the pieces that we can capture in the next move or two “Marvel vs Capcom style,” (same with our pieces). Say, for instance, we’re playing the London system, and we are preparing the e4 pawn advance, and we have a knight on d2, a bishop on d3, and a rook on e1. Then, as e3-e4, I can think of that pawn as a pawn-bishop-knight-rook. Because whatever he decides to capture e4 with, I can immediately turn that pawn into one of those pieces. Interestingly enough, we can think of empty squares as that too...perhaps this will be helpful in calculating. Say I have a pawn on e7, and a rook on e1 - then I can think of the pawn as a pawn-rook, where if the pawn is captured, it can become a rook, and perhaps hit the king on h7. Or if we have a pawn-rook-queen on e7, perhaps we can turn the pawn into a rook-queen and checkmate someone...?
Interestingly enough, continuing off of this idea, if we have multiple pieces attacking a square or one of their pieces, we could think of that square in terms of our own pieces on that square. Say they had a pawn on d6, and we had a queen, a rook, and a pawn all attacking d6, we could say that d6 has pawn/pawn-rook-queen. So we could create a pawn-rook-queen on d6 as the next move. (Naturally, we would start to observe what queens can do on d6).
Perhaps that idea will come in later.
A Very Primitive Model
It helps, when attempting to create something, or a method of any sort, to first see how we would deal with simple problems, before progressing on to more complex ones, and I shall attempt to do that here.
Let us begin with the simplest (and highly unrealistic) of all cases, which is two bishops (say the light squares) attacking each other, both pieces undefended. By starting with such a simple case, perhaps this will allow us to develop a system that lets us calculate more quickly.
The answer is obvious - whoever has the move ends up ahead.
This sheds light on another important factor - can the pieces capture back? Let us now take the exact same scenario, where the pieces cannot capture back. In this case, interestingly enough, one of two things will happen:
Both players capture
Both players evade capture
We quickly see that whether the second player can capture on the next turn is a very big deal, and also that whoever has the move is a very big deal. This is why checks are a big deal (and probably why they were invented in the first place) - the check provides us with an opportunity to “steal the move,” or “gain tempo,” as most chessplayers call it.
The next step is to add the defenders to the equation. Assuming both players have their bishops defended (say with rooks), then what will now happen is the “trade;” once player will capture the other player’s bishop, and the other player will capture back with the rook. Of course, the trade can be declined, as the first player can play a move that puts them out of the line of fire of the other bishop.
What’s interesting though, is that if the rooks will be attacking each other after recapturing. An easy scenario of this is to image white’s bishop on c3, white rook b3, black bishop f6, and black rook c6, with white to move. (Note: If we examine the bishops as “bishop rooks,” (to be elaborated upon later on), we quickly see that the trade is neutral for white if white is to move, but favors black). If white chooses to capture the bishop, then black will reply by recapturing. Awesome. Take the same scenario, however, and imagine it was black’s turn - black takes the bishop, but cannot recapture with the rook on c3 because of the c6 rook - he will lose a bishop and rook for just a bishop. Not worth at all. So white’s only move is to flee with the rook after the bishop falls.
In that scenario, however, black is attacking the bishop twice, so I suppose that wouldn’t matter. Is it theoretically impossible to have the defending pieces intersect if they are not already attacking the other piece? I will have to look into this. It seems like no, however...
Here’s an interesting scenario: Pawn-bishop vs pawn-rook. Say white’s pawn is on d4, with the rook on d3; say Black’s pawn is on e5, with the bishop on g7. Ahhhh, yes, the bishop indirectly attacks d4, so that would be a second order threat. So technically (as we will see later), black is attacking the pawn with a “pawn-bishop,” and white’s pawn is a “pawn-rook.” This significantly favors black, because if black has the move, he can potentially earn an extra piece if white is dumb enough to recapture with the rook. If it is white’s move, they trade.
A brief interlude to summarize what we have learned thus far:
For trades where the pieces are attacking each other, whoever has the move wins the trade if they are undefended
For trades where the pieces are attacking each other but the player who does not have the move has his attacked piece defended, then it will be even (assuming the pieces are of same value), neglecting the effects of the board after those moves
For trades where the pieces are not attacking each other (they are attacking other pieces on the board), it will come out even so long as the number of threats are the same.
If one has more indirect threats than the opponent, then they will win a piece.
The next step, naturally, is everyone having a bunch of undefended pieces all attacking each other, with none of the attacks overlapping. A very simple example would be two rooks attacking each other, and then the light square bishops and the dark square bishops attacking each other.
Both players have 3 threats, but all of those threats are returnable as well.
It is not too difficult to see that whoever has the move will come out on top, because since none of the moves overlap, assuming capture-capture-capture, the player with the move will have captured 2 pieces, whereas the other player would have had the opportunity to only capture one. Perhaps it might be useful to either split pieces attacking each other into a separate category, or not count them at all? We shall reserve judgment for now. In this case, it makes sense to capture the rook first, removing the most valuable piece from play. Then, it’s black’s decision to decide which bishop they want to keep, and they will capture with that bishop.
Interestingly enough, if both players have 4 threats in this situation (say the other two rooks were attacking each other, in an area that does not intersect with the other rooks or any of the bishops), then the player with the move has the advantage, namely because he can choose which bishop to keep.
We’ve now dealt with trades where all of the pieces can capture each other, and the conclusion is as follows:
If the number of trades is odd, the player with the move at the beginning of the trade wins
If the number of trades is even, then the player with the move will not be up a piece, but can choose which piece to keep
Let’s add un-connected defenders to all of the squares. That way, we don’t have to worry about anything else.
If there’s only one of each, either a trade occurs, or a trade doesn’t occur, and we have to consider whether the defending piece is under fire as well. If there are two of each, it doesn’t matter which piece is taken, but the second player will always capture the more valuable piece. The first player would do wise to capture the more valuable piece, unless there’s some sort of move available that could add or negate a threat.
So I suppose the defenders of the pieces is somewhat irrelevant if they are not connected.
We shall now discuss two final topics before wrapping up this discussion - when the values of the pieces are different, and when there are simultaneously pieces attacking each other, and attacks where that is not the case.
One thing is for sure though: unless you have a very good reason, never capture a defended piece of lesser value.
Anyway...let’s look at a really simple example when the value of the pieces are different. Of course, if there is no consequence, we want to capture the piece with the highest value first, whilst simultaneously avoiding our highest value pieces being taken.
An interesting thought just occurred to me - what if instead of keeping count of the amount of threats, we keep track of the amount of different types of threats there are as well? (And the amount that they have?) Perhaps that might help us clarify the position.
Maybe that would help us in the next discussion...
Let’s say we had two double trades (undefended), and then two non-attacking trades. Then, the player with the move has the slight advantage, as they can decide which piece to trade off. Interestingly enough, the player with the move can actually take one of the non-double trades, allowing the second player to choose which of the double trades he wants to commit to. If the second player decides to save a piece, the first player will be up a piece, after the second capture, player 2 can only hope to gain 1 capture. So a capture is essentially forced. If player 1 takes on the first move, player 2 is essentially forced into taking, unless he has a tempo gaining move. Since both players only have 3 threats each...
Tomorrow I will try to come up with a system that correctly encapsulates this idea.

Interlude 1: The Hero
