so imagine. you’re schlatt right. your best friend’s always been pretty, always been flirty, always been one to joke around and call you princess, and you don’t commit easy but you know a bit when you see one so you grin right back and match his steps and kiss him once or twice, over campfires, tasting liquor and smoke and dirt, and once or twice more, dripping rainwater, poking bruises, and more and more and your sweaters get stuck in his closet, your hands get caught in his hair, you tangle up in each others’ dropped stitches and he laughs at your jokes and plays you his songs and makes things with you, ideas, little houses, towering nonsense spires and his teeth get stuck in your neck, his guitar picks sit in your bag, his name is sugary in your mouth, and it’s easy.

and it’s one day too many waking up in his bed before you realize you need to go. he doesn’t tell you he loves you but you can feel it in the way he cooks your breakfast and the questions that he asks and the beers in the fridge that he only buys for you. he doesn’t tell you he loves you but you learn how to make tea and what his favorite languages are and how his heartbeat sounds when he laughs and suddenly, urgently, you know you can never hear him say it because if you did you’d melt back into this, into days and days of sunkissed skin and dreaming on soft sheets. someday you have to wake up.

so you take your beers and you give him his picks and you tell him you hate him, just to make it stick, spit it like chewing tobacco. he doesn’t need you around, so you certainly don’t need him. you walk away from his house, steps measured and slow, because running is for fucking cowards, running is for when you need to make leaving easier on yourself, and you, of all people, don’t need easy. imagine you’re schlatt. congratulations- you don’t need anyone! now you can get some real progress made.

(and always, always, you will toast to love lost, love surgically removed, love quelled before it could spread. always, in your dreams, you will walk the same halls, never quite able to open the bedroom door.)
