“And I dance dance dance, and I dance dance dance”
Mutant strawberry cat girl from space that I drew to escape from my life problems... Also featuring an ancient meme that popped into my head while I was drawing her. Cuz it felt fitting lol, Considering she is a cat girl.

Life in the Devildom
I’ve spammed playing Obey Me for ~1 week and have just begun chapter 16, so if anything is addressed in the series later, I haven’t gotten to it yet > < I tried to leave these ish outside the realm of the plot so hopefully they’re not too crazy :)
MC getting sick and the brothers freaking out because the last time they dealt with human illness was the bubonic plague
Time difference shenanigans:
The devils and angels say they’ll get something done “soon” or “briefly” and MC constantly having to ask for clarification
MC’s current schedule is fairly light, but they’ll be that rad senior citizen who’s always got something going on during the weekends
Zaramela concerts with Levi in 2058
Cheering on Luke & Barbatos w/ Beel in the Realms’ Centennial Bake-Off
Tea time with the Angels once a month
Convincing Diavolo to let the brothers in to the human world and getting true history/purpose on items in museums
Getting kicked out of various antique shows with Mammon until they’re both permanently banned from every single one
MC getting asked if they remember the name of that one book about ___ from the library of Alexandria
Just constantly being asked if they recall things/events/people from history
“Guys wtf that was millennia ago”
“Wasn’t born yet”
“Ask my great, great, great, great, great grandparents”
Asking the non-humans questions from ancient Earth’s history
“So like, what really happened with the dinosaurs?”
“We don’t talk it. Too soon MC”
“It was 65 million years ago, wtf do you mean ‘Too soon’?!?”
Brothers had to crash course human world info before MC showed up since going to the human world is limited to Barbatos, Diavolo, and Lucifer
Asking about religions and how true they are
MC probably asks Lucifer to curse their door after they learn he can do that so the others stop coming in uninvited
MC honestly is probably struggling so hard in their classes regardless of how much help and studying they get/do. MC’s common knowledge or background info can’t top what’s common knowledge to the devils.  It’s a school for those who have lived for freaking ever what more can they learn about???
Upon accepting the reality they’re in the Devildom, MC starts making a list of people/souls they’d like to meet
All the things MC can’t do without help because they can’t fly or the task requires magic so is just constantly calling the brothers for help
Has Mammon on speed dial because he’s upset whenever the called help isn’t him
Honestly at some point MC just snaps at all the others because they keep calling Mammon stupid/fool/idiot (was implied that this has happened even in their angel days) and not only is it cruel, Mammon’s behavior may have started out as a desire for attention that’s now just habit because he’s canonically good when it comes to bets and things that get him money and is very emotionally cued in to MC
He’s also just 2nd most powerful after Lucifer yet still gets walked over by everyone
A lot of his actions just seem like he’s trying to do something to stand out or gain praise even if they’re not good
Many years ago I heard something on NPR or someplace that said class clowns are often highly intelligent and act in such ways because they’re bored, so MAYBE MAMMON’S THE SAME WAY AND NOT ACTUALLY STUPID *glares at the rest of the OM cast*
Look Mammon annoys me but he doesn’t deserve all the shit he gets from everyone else, ESPECIALLY since it’s been going on for millennia and he’s been hearing such things from so long he’s probably internalized it and is acting in such a way that makes it true
So MC stands up to everyone else about Mammon and they are all sHoOk
And thus begins MC’s reign as Mammon’s champion of justice and they have sleepovers where MC re-assures Mammon and helps him see his true worth. Continues even after their yr in the Devildom they have a pact Mammon gets summoned for self-worth night fIgHT ME
Stands up for Luke, too
And Levi as not being a “worthless” otaku (he’s an otaku, he takes pride in that, but he ain’t worthless)
Just extends this to everyone because all-powerful beings can still be insecure and struggle with emotions and self-value, especially when they’ve already been defined as powerful and are held up on a pedestal by others yet make fun of and put each other down a bunch
Humans may be the weakest and shortest living but don’t for a second think they wouldn’t and couldn’t kick demon and celestial ass if they have to
Are social beings by nature protecting friends and processing emotions is kinda our thing
Do the Celestial Realm and Devildom have therapists? Because MC’s the leading advocate for them now after seeing how mentally unhealthy everyone is
TBH Diavolo probably allows MC to get away with so much shit
Want an MC who’s not afraid to curse in front of him
And yeah MC will respect the established hierarchy, but still calls out the others’ BS and isn’t afraid to challenge him
Something that the others clearly are hesitant to do
So this puny, fragile (by demon standards) human having no qualms about voicing their opinion to Diavolo amuses the heck out of him and he probably appreciates it
They have an interesting relationship going forward, complete with their own set of jokes and clapbacks and they probably give Lucifer a heart attack the first couple of times
MC doesn’t realize anything’s amiss and is just interacting with Diavolo as normal, but Diavolo is purposefully messing with Lucifer
Lucifer bristles and is about to tell MC off when Diavolo just laughs or silently waves him off
Probably either questions Diavolo directly or asks Barbatos about it afterwards
MC just not giving a damn about the human-devil-celestial differences
“You want my soul? Fucking work for it”

Survey #243
honestly too lazy to think up random song lyrics here, so just have the survey.
What is the one thing you remember most about January of last year? Nothing. You look at the clock and it’s 11:11, do you wish? I never do, no. How do you think you will look 3 years from now? I pray the fuck to god I'm finally at a weight I want. And of course more tattoos and piercings. And colored hair. What would be number one on your bucket list? Meet, thank, and hug Mark profusely while ugly crying. How old do you think you’ll be when you make your will? I don't know. You get a text message. who do you hope it is? Sara. Are there any songs that you hear that just make you wanna dance? Not really, no. Do you get any of your songs from Limewire? lol how old is this... but no. I did when it was "the thing," though. You and your best friend get in a fight. Why do you think that is? I don't know. Probably said something that came across wrong over a text. What is your biggest annoyance at the time? Financial shit. You see the person you fell hardest for. What do you do? Apologize to him if he's even okay with me speaking a word to him and then letting him on his way because I don't want to make him think I'm still stuck on him. I'd wanna know how things are in his life, but I don't want him to get the wrong impression. It'd be better for both of us. Have/are you depressed? I mean I'm diagnosed with depression, but it's well-managed. At the moment I'm not *depressed*, no. Did you grow up in the United States? Yeah. Never left it, even. Do you call anybody "baby"? Besides my cat and snake, no. Who is the one person you can completely be yourself around? Sara. Are your pop-ups blocked on your computer? Yeah. Do you wear earrings on a normal basis? No. How old were you when you realized that life goes on? I don't know... This is such a vague question. But I guess probably when a childhood cat disappeared or died sometime in elementary school. Are your parent’s night owls or morning birds? Well, I don't live with Dad, but Mom is a night owl more than a morning bird for sure. She can be so grouchy in the morning. Do you like to sing? Eh. Who is your favorite author? *shrugs* I don't read enough. How many pillows are on your bed? Two. What’s your favorite thing about the holidays? Seeing my niece and nephew so excited. What is your favorite type of cake? Red velvet, baby. How many rings do you wear on a day-to-day basis? One. Have you ever been in a mental hospital as a patient? Multiple times. Probably WOULDN'T have been multiple if the psych hospitals here were worth a damn. Went to the same one like five-six times and one other and both sucked. It was a partial hospitalization program, WHICH ISN'T AS "SERIOUS" AS AN ACTUAL FUCKING PSYCH HOSPITALIZATION, that saved my ass. What’s your favorite brand of flavored water? None. Have you ever had an ulcer? No. Do you take birth control pills? Not anymore, no. I was only on them for serious period pain, but as of recently my psychiatrist wanted to test out how I do mood-wise without them, especially as it was a regular occurrence for me to be borderline or actually suicidal the day before my cycle started, and the whole week leading up to it was sketchy. So far, I've been fine - I think even better. I was on it for years, and I mean your body changes, so. Do you like soy sauce? Noooooo no no no. Do you have a good doctor? My psychiatrist is literally the reason I'm alive. That's no exaggeration. I would've killed myself by now if it wasn't for him setting my medicine right. I know I would've. My therapist is great, and my primary physician is fine. What’s your favorite store to browse around? Morph Market, ahaha. I love looking at all the reptile morphs, especially the ball pythons. Do you ever meditate on Scripture? No. Do you like poetry? Yes. Do you have expensive tastes? Nah. What is your favorite color? Pink, particularly lighter hues. Have you ever made a scrapbook? Yeah, for a little while when I was younger. What is a question you get asked too much? If my lip piercing hurt. It doesn't bother me, I'm just asked it most. Worst grade you’ve ever gotten? Zeros on things I didn't do/missed. Who are your 3 closest friends? Sara, Girt, and uh... Chelsea, I think. Maybe Lisa. What is something you have always wanted to do? Travel somewhere cool/really memorable. What are you listening to? A playthrough of The Last Guardian. God, I wanna play it so badly. Do you like the smell of cinnamon? It's one of my favorites, omg. Are you in a relationship? No. Do you like the band Hollywood Undead? Yeah. Do you like Taco Bell? Only the quesadillas, THE CINNABON DELIGHT THINGS, and fiesta potatoes. Who was the first person you spoke to today? My mom. Who was the last? I was just texting the woman who adopted Kaiju; she's catching me up on how she's doing, and apparently great! We're trying to plan a day for me to come see her. :> Have you told anyone you loved them today? Yeah. What song is stuck in your head right now? You mentioned HU, now "Bullet" is looping in my head lol. Does it snow where you live? Sometimes, but rarely a lot. What are you currently sitting/laying on? My bed. Have you ever dated a friend of one of your siblings? No. How old is your oldest living grandparent? 80-something. Do you wear contacts? No, I wear glasses, but I wish I could do contacts again considering I desperately want an undereye microdermal but it'd look stupid with glasses, so. Contacts just annoy me. Where are the last three places you went? Taco Bell, my doctor's appointment, and the gas station. Do you ever go hunting/fishing? I would never in my life hunt, and I don't even want to fish anymore. Both are cruel (hunting more than "cruel"...) imo. I'd only ever fish again if Dad asked me to go with him, because since I was a kid, that's always been our "thing," our bonding experience. I wouldn't be able to say no. Do you know anyone who is a nurse? A lot, actually. Would you prefer to own a lapdog or a bigger dog? Sigh. Didn't think I'd want a dog after Teddy, but as of very recently, I've found myself missing the companionship of one. I don't know if I'll end up with another, though, but if I do, I'd want a medium-sized one, like Teddy was. Are you more of a cat person? Yes. What is your worst subject? Math. Do you know anyone who plays guitar? Yeah. Do you play guitar? Not anymore. Have you had to have stitches at all in the last year? No. Have you ever stayed up all night and then gone to work in the morning? No. That sounds like hell. How many relationships have you been in so far this year? It's a week into January lmao. No. Do you prefer to be single or with someone? With someone. Though now that I am single, I kinda think that's for the better right now...? Eh idk. Do you have any tattoos? Yeah. Are you planning on getting any? Oh, plenty. My Mark tribute is getting tidied up by a great artist on the 4th next month and I CANNOT contain my excitement. Did you lose your virginity before you were sixteen? No. Have you ever dated someone who had a child? No, and I never would. What are the middle names of everyone in your family? Wow yeah, lemme share that on the Internet. Where did you go the last time you took a vacation? The beach. Would you ever consider adoption? I don't want kids so like, Who is someone you aspire to be like? Man, there's a lot of people who inspire me in different ways. I think the world knows I look up to the wisdom, determination, dedication, creativity, compassion, etc. etc. etc. of Mark, I adore the heart and empathy of Shane Dawson, Steve Irwin is my absolute idol in terms of passion for animals, and Jeffree Star's work ethic is like, unbelievable. There are plenty others, but those really stand out. How do you feel about your life right now? oof What is your favorite game show to watch? Family Feud with Steve Harvey. He is so fuckin funny. How good are you in trivia games? What’s your best category? Idk. I'm probably best with animal knowledge though, judging from games I've played along with. Would you much rather test your knowledge or share opinions? I guess it depends on the subject and with whom. How do you feel about word games? Fun. Who is your absolute favorite film director? TIM BURTON. THERE IS NO COMPETITION W/ HIM. When’s the last time had to cover a coworker’s shift? Never. Have you ever had a really unreliable coworker? I've never worked long enough to know. Have you ever had to have a ring resized? No. What is a question you would never ever ask somebody? "I would never ask someone what they weigh." <<< This. I'm not a doctor, so I don't see any situation where that'd be an appropriate question to ask anyone. What sounds like a rude word but really isn’t? I'm sure there's something, but idk rn. Have you ever made a blanket? If so, how did you make one? No. How many godparents do you have? Do they care about you? Zero, I think. What is something that should not exist? Rape. Is there a word you have an emotional connection to? It sounds weird I'm sure, but "petrichor" (the smell of the earth after it rains) makes me feel... weird. Nostalgic, anxious, melancholy. Shortly before becoming a couple, Jason and I were just outside at school while it was raining, and we wondered what that smell was called. When we went back to the computer lab (where we were after exams were done), we looked it up and found out "petrichor" was the term. I remember those days too clearly for them to have happened eight years ago. How about a sound? Any emotional connection to a sound? Ummm not that I can think of. Is there something coming up that you are dreading? Not really, no. Do you ever read graphic novels? No. What is the most ridiculous product you have ever seen? Oh idk. Are there any spiders in your home right now? I mean realistically, probably? None that I know of. What was the last thing that made you laugh hysterically? I can't remember exactly what it was, but something on YouTube. I think on Game Grumps. Are there any candy stores where you live? Not that I'm aware of. Do you own any fingerless gloves? Yeah, I still have them in my drawer, actually. I wore them every day in high school. Tell me about the last animal you touched. My cat Roman. :') Have you ever witnessed a birth? Only cats. Can you see your reflection from where you are sitting? No. Wait, yes I can, though only slightly. My snake's cage is just across the room, so I can see against the glass a bit. Quick! Sniff the air. What can you smell? Cat. .-. Have you ever been in a restroom that actually had a restroom attendant? No? What was the last photo you took of? A deer! There were like, seven or eight in the field just across the road a few evenings ago. My lens didn't go out as close as I'd want, but I took some as practice anyway. I only got a few shots though; I came out to the front porch, and after about a minute, they gradually went back into the woods. What do you look for in a mate? Physically and personality-wise. Am I the only one who hates when human couples are referred to as "mates"???? Idk man it shouldn't because we're just animals, but it's weird. ANYWAY, I don't have like, a concrete vision of a partner, but I do have some set-in-stone personality/moral alignments that are musts, such as just being a generally good person, empathetic, you must love animals or shoo, be in touch with their emotions, understanding, soft stuff like that. I also have a strong preference for having a good sense of humor, I lean more romantically towards outgoing people, you gotta be laid-back and approachable... that kind of stuff. Physically, I really, really don't care, but I think we all have preferences; ex., while it really doesn't matter to me ultimately, I tend to find longer hair on guys more attractive than short. Your thoughts on bacon? Ugh, I wish I didn't love it. I wanna be a vegetarian again so badly. What are your thoughts on little kids with cell phones? If they're of an age where they may be separated from their parents semi-regularly and without the constant presence of a guardian, I'm actually for them having *simple* cellphones. Emergencies exist, and even I, someone who doesn't even want kids, would be scared knowing my child is without an easy, quick method of contact with me. Now, remember I did say "simple" cellphones; I don't believe a little kid should grow up unhealthily attached to technology (like me lmao), so especially in developmental years, I wouldn't want my kid to be glued to their phone playing games or roaming the Internet too freely. What was the last lie you told? I'm not sure. Is there anyone in particular you always try to tune out? Ugh, yes. For political bullshit that I cannot stand hearing. Do you work out? No. What was the last thing you ate with a spoon?  Uhhhh probably oatmeal. What is a food that you always are in the mood to eat? Ice cream lmao. Ever held a newborn animal? Yeah. Is there anything you’re in denial about? What? Maybe, idk. Have you ever been to a Chinatown? No. Do you prefer chunky or creamy peanut butter? CREAMY. Don't come near me with chunky pb. Do you stop to pick up heads-up pennies? No. Do you make a wish when you blow out your birthday candles? Yeah, even though I don't believe it does anything. It's just for the novelty of it. Do your pets have collars? Describe them: Bentley just has a blue, average collar. Roman doesn't because he absolutely hates them. What is the last thing you searched for online? Surveys. Do you use any scented lotions? What do they smell like? No. Do you have any friends that speak any languages you don’t understand? I mean yeah, Spanish is common in America.

Alby Quinn O’Riordan
Hey gang! I’m Len. I’m 26, and I prefer they/them pronouns. I used to play this dear, a while ago, in another RP, but I’d like to continue his story a few years after the events of that RP (with a few tweaks because it was a very specific themed RP). I look forward to getting to know y’all! ^^
(p.s. my ‘w’ and ‘t’ keys are giving me a bit of grief right now, so if you come across a missing one or a couple extras, I’m really sorry! I’m supposed to have my computer serviced ASAP
EDIT: It’s going in for a service tomorrow but I’ve been assured that it shouldn’t take too long because it should just be an issue with the keys. I’m hoping to take a quick hiatus and just waiting to hear back from the admins re. that as well, sorry!)
Tumblr media
Alby Quinn O’Riordan was born on the 18th of January, 1983, to a young, single mother in Dungarvan, County Waterford, Ireland.
His mother, Rose, was born and raised in Cobh, County Cork, and was 16 when she fell pregnant with him to a local boy, her childhood friend. Her parents were devout Catholics, and her father couldn’t accept that his youngest child had betrayed him, so the young woman was turned out of house and home. She made her way north along the coast to the town of Dungarvan, where she was able to make a life for herself there.
When Alby was 5 years old, he and his mother immigrated to America, where his mother got work in an Irish Pub called ‘Murphy’s’ in New York City. The elderly couple who owned it had lost their only son at a young age and adopted the hardworking Rose and her young son as their own.
A year later, his father walked back into the lives of Rose and Alby for the first time in the young man's life. He hadn’t known Rose had been pregnant, only to learn about it after she had left town. Over the next few years, his parents would rebuild their relationship, giving him three siblings in the space of 30 years. With the last sibling, Dana Gwynn, born when Alby was 26.
Ten years later, Alby’s adoptive grandparents retired to Mrs. Murphy’s home city of Toronto and left the pub to their adopted daughter.
Alby grew up loving to dance and paint. From a young age, his mother had him in dance classes - with ballet being a particular favourite of his. It was here that he would meet his first love. Harry Park was a young Korean boy who had been born in the city to two immigrant parents, and the two immediately hit it off. They were inseparable and soon became a couple.
The two boys dated for almost two years before Harry was killed in an unprovoked attack on his 18th birthday. The teenaged couple had been walking back to the Park’s apartment, discussing their plans to move in together that summer for college, when they were jumped by four boys from their high school. They had been given a lot of shit in the past by these particular boys, with the hot-headed Alby getting into physical altercations a number of times. This time, however, they went for Harry and he didn’t make it out. Alby was left beaten and bloodied and scarred of love.
Fast forward almost 5 years, Alby would fall in love for the second time in his life. He was covering a shift at his mother’s pub the summer after he graduated college with a degree in High School Education when in walked Evan Sullivan, the man who would, in 14 short months, become his husband.
Friendship came easy to Evan and Alby, with the two men becoming fast friends. No friendship had ever been so easy for the Irishman, especially not after Tom. One of the things that made their relationship so easy was the fact that Evan was a straight man. Despite their friendship and their different sexual preferences, their friendship was riddled with sexual tension and attraction. Evan was everything Harry hadn’t been. Evan was strong and masculine, where Harry had been delicate and androgynous. Evan had blond-haired, blue eyes, and tanned skin, whereas Harry had had dark hair and eyes, and fair skin. Evan was loud and extroverted, whereas Harry had been quiet and reserved. Evan was a cop, but Harry had wanted to be a ballerino. The two did share, however, a wicked sense of humour.
Alby shouldn’t have wanted him, he was off-limits, but he wanted him desperately.
Six months into their friendship, after a boys night out, the two men shared their first kiss. It was hot and passionate and filled with promise. It was a drug and Alby was hooked. Evan reacted badly to the kiss, severing ties with Alby and sending the Irishman into a deep funk.
Their separation barely lasted a week, with Evan showing up to Alby’s apartment, looking just as wrecked as he felt. The blond explained that he’d been in the closet since he’d been a teen and feared his homophobic father’s wrath. The week he’d spent apart from Alby, however, had helped him to see that his relationship with the Irishman and being true to himself was more important than his fear of his father, but they decided to take things slow and started seeing each secretly.
The secret relationship soon became too much for Alby, who found himself falling in love with the blond and he came clean. He couldn’t understand why Evan was so desperate to keep their budding love hidden from the world when Alby only wanted to shout it from the rooftop. The two fought once more with horrible words spoken by both parties and they went their separate ways.
On his way home, however, Alby’s uber got into an accident, with his driver and one other driver dying on the scene. While Alby was badly hurt, he survived with a little memory loss - which soon healed - and a large scar down the left side of his face reaching from his brow to his jaw. Evan barely left his side the entire time he was in the hospital and not long after he was discharged, the two were engaged. Like their courtship, they had a whirlwind engagement and married quickly, the two settling easily into married life. After a scare as big as almost losing each other, they didn’t want to waste another moment apart. Evan’s father, Steven, disowned him, but his mother, Helen, supported them fully - even going as far as to leave Mark for how badly he had treated their son. Alby’s parents had always been supportive of their son and they soon fell into playing happy families, welcoming Helen as one of their own.
Not long after tying the knot, Alby left his job as a teacher. His heart had never really been in the job, and he much preferred working one-on-one or with small groups of kids. Unsure of what to do, he took over running the pub for his mother who had her hands full with a surprise pregnancy as a way to earn money and pass the time until the right job came along. He found the job came easy to him having grown up in that environment, often doing his homework at that very bar, and he enjoyed how busy it kept him. He found himself thriving in the position. It was the perfect job for someone as friendly and extroverted as himself. A year later, it was his.
After a year of marriage, Evan and Alby decided to begin the process to have a child. Alby’s maternal cousin, Katie offered to be their surrogate and they used Evan’s sperm. They went to therapy with Katie to make sure this was right and the process took them another year before they were ready to do the embryo transfer. Their first attempt not only took, but the embryo ended up splitting and almost 38 weeks later, their twin boys Asher Fionn and Felix Cole were born on the 1st of November, 2009.
Alby and Evan O’Riordan were married nine happy years before they were torn apart. Evan had been made a sergeant early in their marriage before progressing to dog squad, and rarely saw much active duty as their marriage progressed. He hadn’t even been on the job when his life had been cut short. He had taken their dogs (three German Shepards - two of which were retired police dogs both past partner’s of Evan’s, and the third being his current partner) for a jog when he was shot in a mugging gone wrong. Jess and Duke, were shot and killed trying to protect their master, while Skipper - their son - was badly injured trying to do the same. Alby had been distraught when he’d received the news and closed off once again. The only thing that kept him going where their boys, Tricks and Skipper.
On the day he buried Evan, Alby O’Riordan sold the pub and the flat they’d made their home above it. He’d initially tried to give it back to his mother, but she and his father had taken his younger sisters and moved to Toronto three years earlier, to be with her elderly adoptive parents, and they weren’t planning on ever moving back.
There was nothing keeping them in New York any longer. No matter where he went, he was reminded of his husband and the life they had shared together. With the money he made on the flat, he purchased an apartment just big enough for his family’s needs and moved his broken family to Toronto. He needed his parents. His boys needed their grandparents. He needed to heal.
Alby hadn’t planned on opening a new pub at all, let alone so soon after his loss, but he found one desperately in need of repair and threw himself into fixing it up. It was slow going, with Alby juggling family commitments and his mother trying to make him have a social life, but a year and a half after moving to Toronto, O’Riordan’s Irish Pub was open for business.
The Irishman is still very much in his own shell. He puts on a strong act for his family and a cheery expression at the pub, but he’s heard speculation over why his smile doesn’t quite reach his eyes. He’s friendly and charming and always willing to lend an ear, but he never opens up beyond surface-level information. He doesn’t really let anyone close to him, though he knows he has to. Eventually, he’s going to have to let someone in. It isn’t healthy to keep such dark feelings and emotions bottled up. He has others relying on him after all. Alby's just not sure if he’s ready for that, but maybe one day.

From Zain,
‘The whole family is really hung up on the idea of people “just wanting to be special” and it drives me nuts.&
Could that because they themselves think they are special? Are they religious? These siblings who say stuff like that? I know you are an atheist but I don’t think you mentioned if your siblings were or not. Sorry, I’m fairly new here so you might have in the past.
Just the phrase: 'The whole family is really hung up on the idea of people “just wanting to be special” and it drives me nuts.’
As I come from Islamic family who moved to the united states before I was born.
My family is pretty religious. And I have a HUGE family. Aunts, Uncles, cousins and ten siblings and the whole entire extended family have all ended in America as they followed each other here early thirty years ago, before I was born.
Growing up in a pretty white, pretty non religious place, a lot of my siblings bece very proud of us being Muslim.
My sisters wore the hijabs and seperated themselves from the other women where we are living through their clothing. And the frequent praying and strict dietary requirement add to that kind of atmosphere of seperation from the masses.
Being religious seems to mean you think you are speical.
That you have a special relationship with God/Allah that only a few in your community get to have.
It is a feeling of us vs them. Us against the world.
I have a feeling Christians aren’t that different to Muslims like that.
My family thought I was 'juat trying to be different’ when they found out I was gay.
I didn’t tell them. Fuck that.
I was out at the mall with my boyfriend, a town over from home as I didn’t feel comfortable shopping with my boyfriend in my home town in case my family saw.
A cousin saw us holding hands. I didn’t see him. He followed us, taking a bunch of photos on his phone including a damning one of my boyfriend kissing me as I leaned into a wall.
I got home and fifteen of my family members were waiting in the lounge.
With those fucking photos. I still feel anxious just thinking about it. I can feel my heart racing even writing this.
My father was ranting and raving, and slapped me accross the face. Then two of my uncles held me down and whipped me with a belt until I was bleeding. I feel have the scars. I hate the scars so, so much. I feel so J when I see them in the mirror.
I was then locked in a bedroom and told I could not come out until I agreed to an arranged marriage with a family friend.
I was in that bedroom for three days, pissing in a bottle before I realised they weren’t going to let me out until I agreed to marry that girl.
The bedroom was on the second floor and deadbolted shut. I smashed the window open in the middle of the night, jumped off the roof and fucking RAN.
I broke my foot when I jumped but I didn’t even notice until later. My boyfriend thinks it must have been the adrenaline.
But anyway, made it to the place my boyfriend was renting (he was from our of town but we had met when he came to town for a short term job contract.)
I still remember how horrified he was when I turned up looking half dead on his door in the middle of the night after moving contact for nearly three days. Surprise.  Not a great start to a new relationship really.
He wanted me to press charges, I refused as I did not want to see my family again. He left his job seven  weeks  early, forfeited a month’s rent and he called his mom that night and had her buy us airline tickets to fly to her state a day afterwards. I was a absolute mess.
To the extent I refused to let my boyfriend take me to the hospital as I was terrifed of my family looking for me in the hospitals.
I wore a long sleeve top on the plane, despite it being summer to cover up the cuts from the glass and walked on my broken foot. Making it worse. Some people say it is impossible to walk on a broken foot. Bullshit. Not if your as terrifed as I was.
I went to the hospital when we were safe in my boyfriend’s state.
I transferred colleges to go to one near where my boyfriend’s mom was living and we both ended up living with her for four years until we got a place of our own.
I love her. She is a mother to me.
Lucky for me my family knew nothing about my boyfriend, so have no idea what state he is in.
I’ve never tried to get in contact with them. I’m not a missing person as I told my college I was transferring but made it very clear I did not want my family knowing where I was going.
I kind of regret now not listening to my boyfriend and refusing to press charges. But I was a scared 18 year old kid. Now as a 26 year old I feel more confident. But then I really don’t want to open that can of worms again. As long as I never have to see them again I’ll be happy.
We are now engaged and thinking of co-parenting in the future with a lesbain couple who are very good friends of ours, we bonded as one of them went through something similar- one of the girls was locked into a room by her Christian parents when she came out at 21 and then shoved a male family friend from the church into the bedroom to “fix her”. Yep, her Christian parents had her raped. Unlike me my friend was brave and after she pretended to be 'converted’ she went straight to the police station and pressed charges. She hasn’t seen her family since the trial. We met in a support group for victims of family abuse. Our partners have become close friends too and we are excited about the four of us starting a family some day.
I’m happy but I am still affected my what happened and i sometimes hate myself for being weak. I’m paranoid and have even refused to go on Facebook and don’t let friends post photos of me online, as I am terrified of a mutual friend somehow passing a photo onto my family and finding me. I know it is a very slim possibly but I also thought getting seen with my boyfriend at the mall all those years ago was a silm possibility as well.
But I’ll never forget my family thinking I was gay because I was trying to spite them or be different for them. religious people desire so much to see themselves as special the ready to accuse other people very easily of 'trying’ to be 'special’ or 'different’.
So yeah. I am an atheist from a religious family, and from your comment I’m guessing your family might be religious as well? And from the sounds of it you have had it really tough because of your sexuality with your family as well. I know it is hard and I am sorry you have to deal with that.
Sometimes I even come across as a bit intolerant towards religion as I kind of shut down when people talk about it. My mind just goes blank and I panic. My  friend from the Christian family feels the same.
So I am sorry for what you have gone through and being suicidal. I am sending you virtual hugs, as I know how lonely that can be and it does stay with you.
Dear Zain,
Wow! I’m so sorry that you had to go through all of that and thank you so much for sharing your story. I’m very happy that you got out of that situation and that it sounds like you’re quite happy now. Regarding the scars, I read a little while ago that there are specialized tattoo artists who cover up scars and stretch marks in a way that just looks like your natural skin (rather than covering it up with an image) and the results looked quite impressive. If your scars bother you so much, perhaps that would be an option for you to look at?
My family are pretty well all Jehovah’s Witnesses--cousins, uncles/aunts, grandparents. My biological father was a very abusive man (who was removed from my life when I was 14) but the rest of my family aren’t abusive. They’re just really stuck in a certain way of thinking and can be unkind when faced with anything different. They’ve learned and grown a lot over the years but they could be quite horrible when I was younger. I started dating my current boyfriend when I was 17 and they were really awful to him because he’s an atheist (so they naturally blamed him for “corrupting” me once I became more outspoken about my own lack of belief) and they tried pretty hard to break us up. My mum even kicked me out because she said I was a bad influence on my younger sister (I had only had a few months of school left before my graduation and she at least told me I didn’t have to leave until I finished). I moved out and refused to tell her where I went because I was so angry about it and I didn’t really talk to the people in my family much for the next year or two. I think they eventually realized that we weren’t going to break up and they started being a little nicer so (ten years later) I now have good relationships with all of them, but the damage was already done for my boyfriend and he still feels really on edge around them. I also have a rather large family by the way. I have eight siblings, though almost all of my extended family live in either Alberta or England so we don’t see them much.
I have PTSD and religious talk is one of my main triggers. I can discuss religion just fine and learn about it, but I can have quite severe reactions when I hear people talking about it as though they actually believe it. Any kind of sermon or people talking about trusting Jesus or God’s law, etc. will get my heart rate going and I’ll start to panic. I just have way too many horrible associations with it, especially because my biological father would use scriptures to justify beating us (there’s a scripture about how parents should stone their disobedient sons--that was his favourite because he could tell us we were lucky we were even allowed to live).
I think the weird obsession with “trying to be special” with my family is more to do with our upbringing than it is with their religion really. Although, now that you’ve mentioned that, I realize that JW culture is very big on how different they are from other Christians. I think it was a combination of there being too many children, everybody being freaking miserable, and my mother not believing that mental health issues were a real thing. There simply wasn’t time to see to the individual needs of nine different kids, especially since my father had absolutely no part in parenting, so my one of my mum’s favourite mottos was “if I can’t see blood or bone, I don’t want to hear about it”. We could actually get in trouble for crying if she couldn’t see a physical injury on us. She was one of those people (who thankfully has since learned how wrong it was) that used to regularly say stuff like depression wasn’t real and people who committed suicide were the most selfish people in the world. Pretty much any kind of mental health problem was just someone trying to get attention, like a kid throwing a temper tantrum to get what they want, and should be ignored or told off. It created a really horrible culture in our family where anybody doing or saying anything that was at all outside of the usual was just “trying to be special” and it was met with severe criticism and scorn. My mum saw cut marks on me once when I was 13 or so and her response was to tell me “if you’re gonna start up with that kind of nonsense, I’ll send you to the loonie bin” in a very threatening manner. She never asked why I was doing it or checked to see if I was still doing it. I just learned to use different methods that looked less obvious and continued with habits of self-harm for another five years or so.
I excuse a lot of my family’s behaviour (as well as some of my own at the time) as the lashing out of miserable people who saw no way out of their situation. None of us knew how to love each other properly or to show each other support because we had literally never experienced it before. My mum got married when she was 17 and was very quickly moved to Canada where she had no family or support system and I think she just accepted that adult life was supposed to suck as much as it did. Once my father was out of the picture, there were several turbulent years as we all learned how to act like normal people and how to treat each other the way that family should. I’m very grateful for the change that has happened, even if some people still have a ways to go.
Thanks again for sharing your story and I’m so happy to hear that you’re doing well now. Sending you virtual hugs back :)

How much would I pay for my yearly motorcycle insurance?
Thank you for your time. I am a 18 year old freshman university student living in Canada and I am really interested in buying a new motorcycle. I recently got my M1 and I will be going for my M2 next, so I am still kinda inexperienced. I looked at a few motorcycle websites and a couple of them read that motorcycle insurance is affected by age, experience, driving record, bike engine, etc. I figured that a medium sized engine probably wouldn't cost too much so I looked at a bike with 600cc. I am not worried about the initial cost of the bike since my scholarship money out-pays my tuition and housing by an excess of $4000. Also, I have had no history of accidents in cars or anything. I was wondering, based on my history and my status, what would be a good approximation of the yearly insurance I would have to pay given that I am a student and I am looking at a 600cc bike? we bought a whole life policy for a couple of years ago b/c we liked the safety of not losing our money(the way u do w/ term)--anyway we have since learned that u don't make any money this way and it's better to take those premiums and put them in better returning investments. we already have a huge chunk of money in this whole life policy that will be down the toilet if we cancel. what should we do? can we convert it back to term?

Car insurance rate (red light ticket!)?
Sorry if this is too long, but i really need help! I just got a ticket for turning right on red w/o stopping in WA state. i googled and know that insurance companies don't often check driving record. unless when you make some change to your policy, make a claim or every 2 renewal cycles? my questions are: -How long does it take for my insurance company to notice this if i don't make any changes to my policy or make a claim within 3 yrs (this will stay on my record for 3 yrs right?)??? -Usually how long is ONE renewal cycle in car insurance? -If i tick the mitgation hearing option, and explain the infraction to the judge and he/she reduce my penalty, Does that mean the record will stay on me shorter? the penalty money will reduced? and hopeful insurance company will not increase my rate? -I am a student and I am cover under my dad's insurance, so if they increase my rate, does that mean the whole amount of premium increase or just my part? PS: if this help, my insurance company is American Family Insurance. I just switch to it 3 months ago.""

I had a bad accident yesterday morning and I payed to bring my car home but I didn't inform my insurance company yet because I haven't got the excess fee at the moment. The car seems to be a write off according to the police and the locals who helped me while I was in shock but will there be a problem if I waited a few days until I have the excess cost ready then I'll tell the insurance company what happened? It wasnt my fault and also the traffic lights were out of order at that junction as this person came at high speed hitting my car at the left corner sending me flying towards the road to the right and onto the pavement. I've gathered pictures of everything for evidence. But the problem is at the moment I cant afford the excess fee, If i let the insurance company know will they ask me to pay right away?""

How much home insurance should I get?
I just bought a house for about $180,000. I am looking for homeowners' insurance, but I am confused as to how much I should get. Should I insure for just the replacement cost of rebuilding the structure, or for the % of the mortgage I am financing. I got 3 different quotes, and they were for $396, $502, and $858. The lowest one was for $396 b/c it was with my car insurance company, but they will only insure the cost of rebuilding the structure, which they estimate as $110,000 (the house is small and in a decent neighborhood.) The second company wanted to insure me for that, but I got them to quote me on $140,000. That amount, when you add in the 25% overflow they allow you, meets the 90% of the mortgage amount I am financing. The 1st company would not do that for me. The 3rd quote was for $140,000, and was with the people w/whom I have had renter's insurance for 12 years. The only difference was that there was not a wind damage deductible of 2% on the 3rd quote. My loan officer says to just get enough insurance to rebuild the structure. How much insurance should I get?""

Questions about car insurance?
I understand that I will need car insurance and when I do get my first car my insurance will be high (I'm 17). My parents don't drive, so I can't rely upon them. Tell me if I'm wrong and help me out... 1. So the big picture of car insurance is that if I get into an accident, the money I put for my car will be paid for with the money I put in? 2. Will car insurance cover anything I do with the car? (Such as swapping parts, oil change, etc.) 3. Why does insurance quotes matter? Doesn't the more you pay the better coverage you have? Why do you need to save money? Are they trying to make you pay less so you if your accident can't be paid fully, you will pay with some other type? 4. How much will insurance supposedly cost? My first part-time job will only pay approx. 30k a year, I don't know how much I'll lose. 5. Does the type of car affect how much I will pay? (Hopefully, but I will be getting a Scion FR-S automatic) 6. Which car insurance company is mostly recommended for teenagers? Thanks for your help!""

Again, my window was rolled down a bit so if someone wanted to break in they could have. I have called the apartments on several occasions and they said they would get back to me on the lawn mowing company so I can make a claim. Still never have. This was almost a month ago. I am thinking about dropping myself from health insurance all together (I am 31 and healthy), also i plan on getting rid of my cable and internet (which would save $140 a month), my husband (with medical issues) will get health insurance through his work (about $160-$200 a month) and I will go without for a couple of years just so we can keep our heads above water... I just have a question about my plan of action- can I drop my Health insurance? will I get fined for opting out of health insurance when Obamacare goes into action next year?""

I think I’m gonna keep doing this yearly reflection. 24 was a year of immense hurt, self-discovery, and developing new relationships. The year was very much focused on school and work and finding/building my career. I sought out what I came to Portland for and now things are moving. Moving really fast!
Love.
In my 24 post I ended on trying to become more positive. I think I have achieved that for the most part, minus all the sad depression stuff. What I think happened in 24 was I became more aware of what I am grateful for. I’m grateful for my friends, the family that have, the things that I own, and the world of opportunities around me and what are given to me. I cherish the time I spend with those I love and I make sure those times are meaningful.
Something that did happen a couple months ago, was someone who I barely knew sent extremely hurtful things to me along the lines of poking at my mental health, career, and personality. All sore spots to the point where I got that feeling where my entire chest filled up with anger and hurt at the same time. I wanted to lash back. But then I thought, what’s the point? This person chose to push hate and judgement onto me and if I were to push hate back, what would that solve? Me being hurt just lets this person get the gratification. They would win. I immediately deleted the vulgar text and blocked this person from all aspects of my life. The more I read the text just made me more upset, so removing it was what needed to be done. I was pretty down for a couple days. Then I just kept reminding myself of the people that I have surrounded myself with, who love and care for me. That feeling is much stronger than any hate thrown at me and I soon felt better. This person obviously lacks love in their life, so hate is how they validate their choices and behavior. I choose to let trust and love from the people who care about me and who I care about guild my decisions. This switching of mindset is definitely progress in my life that I recognize. To this person who may or may not be still reading this because this site is public: love always wins. You can’t knock me down. I hope that you find more love in your life. Peace.
Something I heard on a podcast was that your body reacts the same way for different emotions and feelings. For example, anxious and excited. You get that blood rush and and tightness feeling for both. Love and hate are the same. You feel as though the blood vessels around your heart and chest contract whenever you feel love for something or hate something with a passion. Rethinking this feeling and recognizing it as the positive of the two helps you understand the importance of that feeling. By thinking of the positive one, whatever you are upset at seems less problematic and you begin to learn, step back and ask yourself: why am I feeling this way and why is it important to me?
How have I become one of those cheesy ass sappy motherfuckers who talks about love? Maybe because its also Pride Month? It is what is now. Not sorry.
What did I do for my birthday?
This year my friend Sarah and her mom took me out wine tasting for my birthday. I’m not super knowledgeable in wine and I don’t think I have the palette to taste and smell all the notes. What one of the wine stewards said was “do you like it?” and that’s really all you need to start with and then it slowly starts to grow. I’ll definitely enjoy a glass of wine more often, but my go to will always be an old fashioned or a well crafted cocktail. Bartender biased. The day before on my actual birthday I attended a PSU Choir concert that Sarah was also in featuring Valerie Naranjo, the SNL percussionist. Valerie has such a beautiful and spiritual soul that exudes when she plays her tribal instruments or sings. It was definitely an unexpected concert that made me miss being apart of music and how impacting it can be. I kind of regret not joining a concert band at PSU, but the time and focus were just not there this time around.
Change.
That’s been on my mind these past few weeks. I keep thinking about how my life is going to change once I am out of school and not working at Lela’s. This is a big transition time in my life as things wrap up and end. As I was working or while I was sitting in class, I thought to myself: wow, only a few more weeks of this and its all over. I won’t see the same faces everyday or do the same task everyday. The norm that I’ve had for the past year and a half is gonna change. Change is good. Change is scary. Change is growth.
I’m still not entirely sure what my new job will be like. I know I will be applying some of the accounting knowledge that I have gained this past year, but from what I’ve heard it will be a clean slate of training and I’m not expected to know anything. More details will become more clear as the next week unfolds. I look forward to this new job and whatever new doors it will open. Working at Lela’s and the accounting recruiting has really opened up the network of people I now know. That momentum of focusing on the people rather than the paycheck will help me get far. I have been living beneath my means for so long now, more money will only just help me maintain that and add just a bit more while removing some stress. Moss Adams very much has that culture of people first and I am excited to experience a new group of individuals with similar mindsets.
What I am excited about the change is the opportunity to grow myself in my personal life. My evenings and weekends have always been prioritized for work and studying. I look forward to actually having time off for me to spend with people that I care about and developing routines that will benefit my well being and health. Now, there is something called the CPA Exam which I will eventually start studying for, but I will work that into my day when the time comes.
Saying Goodbye.
I dwelt on this topic a lot. The person that comes to mind is Co Ngan (Grandma Chef). I tear up thinking about it every time. Her presence in my life has been such a blessing. I really didn’t have grandparent figures while growing up. I have older uncles and granduncles and aunts, but I would only see them from time to time. I never really see them more than 6-8 times in a year. Co Ngan has only been in my life for only a year and a half, but the impact on me make it feel like 10 years. I haven’t really lost any close family members at this time of life. I am fortunate. Her age makes me think that she will eventually pass even though how strong and healthy she is right now. I will experience intense grief for the first time. Judging how I feel about saying goodbye just now, I don’t know how much time I will have left with her once I leave the restaurant. She is one of the strongest, funniest, and inspiring woman I have ever met. (Next to my mom of course) On my last day we didn’t talk about the goodbye. I could tell she was slightly avoiding me because it would bring up tears, as I did the same. The day ended, we both walked to her car, I broke down in tears before saying anything and we hugged and said our goodbyes. The embrace lasted for what felt like 4-5 minutes. I told her how much she has meant to me and that she fulfilled that grandparent role in my life. She assured me that I needed to leave and live my own life and to go home and be well to my mother. She told me to call from time to time. I told her to not be sad, and she said she’ll be sad I won’t be here anymore. We stared in silence in each others eyes as she embraced my face for a few more seconds. Its late, we should go home and rest. Cảm ơn, Co Ngan.
Saying goodbye to my boss was the night before my last day. I requested we have one last get together to reflect on what we have accomplished together. During dinner we discussed so much about our personal lives. He gave me advice for the future and my new career as did I about what ways to combat this growing spurt of Lela’s without me. There were multiple instances where we both almost broke into tears. I could tell he was hurting inside just as I was. The next day was his baby shower and at it were all of his friends that somehow all had become acquaintances of mine and know about me. All wishing me the best on my next endeavors and offering to catch up in SF whenever I visit. He made the effort to be there when I closed the door one last time and we stood outside and stared at Lela’s. He reminded me that WE did this and to be proud no matter where it goes. Thank you, Dat.
Another person I had to say goodbye to was my therapist. He came into my life at the darkest time and helped me out of it and allowed me to see things differently. I am so thankful for getting the chance to have that opportunity to speak to someone about my life insecurities and struggles. Our conversations were very helpful in guiding me out of the depressive state I was in and come to realize the good that is in my life and what I still need to work on. In my last session, he told me that he was lucky and grateful to have met me and that he is hopeful for my future. Words that brought me to tears and I could tell he was holding something in as well. Thank you, therapist.
This past week I have cried so much. Though I am sad, I know that the tears just mean I care deeply about something or I feel cared for. The love that exudes from every goodbye said is so strong, that I feel overwhelmed. Writing the three paragraphs above conjured those feelings and tears back and now the people in this coffee shop seem genuinely concerned for me. I’m okay. I will be okay. Ending things now feel different. Different in that the relationships I made are so long lasting that I know for a fact I will keep in touch and maintain the bonds that have been created. It almost feels like its not all ending completely, but just an aspect of the relationships are evolving into something new. It still fucking hurts to say goodbye.
Thanks to my friend Allison for taking all of these wonderful sentimental professional photos of me! I’m so happy that I will have something to capture this time in my life.
Goals for this year.
I think one of my goals for 25 is to continue to work on myself and put myself forward. My focus has been so much about doing well in school and making sure work runs smoothly. All of it just adds stress to my life. I need to shift that focus onto me so that I can learn to love myself and be a better person when I do want to apply myself more. I’ve made a lot of progress, but there is more progress to be made.
I want to get really serious about exercise and physical fitness. I keep saying this (as we all do) at the start of every year, but I definitely need to listen to my body more and give it what it needs. I got the eating healthy thing down pretty well for the most part, but I lack that balance of exercise to make what I eat to benefit my body and mind. I tried this a few years ago by running. I was pretty consistent until the whole accounting life change thing and then school took up my life again. I’m ready to get back into it and perhaps trying weight lifting to build muscle. There were so many pots of pho that I lifted at work on a daily!
I want to thank you to all those who continue to read my post! Those that reach out to me personally about their own struggles relating to mine and the words that I have written really mean a lot to me. We all have our own unique struggles, but it doesn’t mean you have to get through it alone or feel alone. [Insert awkward promo.] If you want to get an email notification instead of looking out for my social media posting link, just click on the box in the top right corner and there should be a follow button. That way you will always know when I post! [End awkward promo.]
Of course, I want to achieve killing it at my new career, moving out of Oregon, and just getting to experience more life. Whatever will happen in this next year, I know that this last year has changed my life in so many ways. Ways that will set a stepping stone to new opportunities and better my inner happiness and acceptance. I’m sure 25 will come with a whole lot of struggles, a whole more stress, more hard goodbyes, but most importantly a whole lot of love.
25 I think I'm gonna keep doing this yearly reflection. 24 was a year of immense hurt, self-discovery, and developing new relationships.

Litigation Law Firms
In today’s litigious society, it is an almost certainty that everyone knows someone who has battled through some legal obstacle. We are a litigation law firm that helps people just like you recover from loss or exercise your rights under the law. Another almost certainty is that, with tens of thousands of civil lawsuits filed every day, chances are your turn is coming, if it hasn’t already happened.
Why is this so? Why has litigation increased so dramatically in just 50 years or so? Is it because Americans are injuring each other more than we did two generations ago? Hardly. The root problem, unfortunately for America, lies elsewhere.
A more likely scenario is that, as America grew rich beyond the wildest dreams of our Founding Fathers, the meritocracy that had been “The American Way” for more than 200 years gave way to something else.
It may be that life had become increasingly easy for most Americans. Even as early as 1960, President John Kennedy saw something corrosive happening to the character of America and Americans, when in his Presidential Inaugural Speech he said, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.”
So affluent has America become that Americans have come to believe increasingly that every problem can be solved with money. Ignored is the real tragedy of modern America. As it has grown rich and richer, our country has become more and more removed from the ethos of personal responsibility and accountability that made America strong, powerful and respected. No longer self-reliant, Americans have begun seeing themselves as victims of every mishap and misfortune that comes their way. They have come to believe that they have the right to sue for every right they think they have. Forgotten or ignored is the fact that with every right – every freedom, if you will – comes a corresponding responsibility, and that the two are inseparable.
youtube
Americans have come to believe that nothing is their fault; that someone else is always to blame. They also have a growing sense of entitlement to compensation from anyone and everyone or any entity or entities that may have contributed in any way, direct or otherwise, to any injury, real or not, regardless of personal fault.
Seizing on society’s growing sense of victimization and entitlement, predator-attorneys helped convince much of the public that it has a “right” to sue neighbors, friends, even family members and employers, doctors, businesses and industries for whatever “wrongs” may occur.
Through advertising, media hype and the actions of lawyers and courts, much of society has been convinced that victimization and entitlement are normal, acceptable forms of behavior. Accordingly, we have been taught that harsh, aggressive, and vengeful pursuit of cash compensation for real or imagined “wrongs” is the new “American Way.” And it is as American as baseball and apple pie.
Trial Lawyers in Utah
Worse yet, when victimization is rewarded, it becomes legitimized and reinforced in ways that ultimately are destructive to the so-called “victims” and to society as a whole.
Fifty years ago, most of our parents or grandparents wouldn’t know how to find a lawyer let alone engage one. You just didn’t sue anyone. It wasn’t done. If you got injured, insurance would cover the claim or the offending party would pay the cost of the injury, if you were lucky. Everyone involved chalked up such experiences to the school of hard knocks and went on with their lives. We used to think, accidents happen! No one thought about punitive damages or compensation for trauma, mental anguish, or emotional distress. No one even knew what those terms meant. Not so today.
youtube
Confronted by the overwhelming litigation that surrounds us all and the disdain society feels toward lawyers, it is no wonder a poll by Harris Interactive concluded that 54% of those surveyed do not trust the legal system in America, while 83% believe the system makes it too easy to file frivolous lawsuits. In another Harris survey, only about 11% of the public said they had confidence in America’s law firms, which is only slightly higher than confidence the public has in the two lowest rated institutions surveyed – Wall Street and Congress. Even more revealing than the public’s negative attitude toward law firms is a Gallup poll that ranked lawyers next to last in honesty and ethics – just a hair above used car dealers. My, how far the mighty have fallen!
Despite these deep-felt negative apprehensions about the law and lawyers, an American Bar Association survey of its members incongruously indicates that 80% of the respondents think that, “In spite of its problems, the American justice system is still the best in the world.” Now that’s denial. “Of course, these poll results were reported by the news media, so they could be wrong,” says Dave Barry, the popular American satirist. “There might not actually have been any polls; it’s possible that some reporter just made the whole thing up. But I don’t think so.”
Despite such broad-based and growing public distrust of the civil justice system and disdain for lawyers, the public nonetheless appears undeterred in its headlong rush to get whatever it can from whomever it can.

9:25 a.m.  sun is shining, blizzard tonight predicted - back to nyc - computer room - in a hurry again - THE TEETH. The German writer Thomas Mann was known for paying much attention to the teeth of his characters - befote 1914 my mother went with her grandmother to the market in a town now in Poland and called Bielo Bialska - in the foor hills of the Carpathian mountains - her Jewish grandparents had a dry goods store there and my mother's descriptions of that scenario take up many pages in her German memoirs - written with my encouragement. A scene she describes is going to the market where the young girls - often 12, 13, were sitting hoping to be hired as domestics - the kind of domestic her maternal grandmother had been, who died before she was born. The prospective employers made the girls open their mouth and examined their teeth - an indicator of good health - as also the teeth of horses get examined. My mother's mother, the daughter of the dead domestic woman, didn't have a tooth in her mouth by 24 and had dentures. Both parents of my former husband Robert had dentures. My mother paid a lot of attention to her teeth and my teeth - and made me aware that teeth are an indicator of social class - missing teeth show a shortage of funds. Actors all have brilliant white teeth - some false. I have early memories of crowded waiting rooms of dentists for the poorer of the people in Prague and fillings at an esrly age. My parents took me to a clinic to have my overbite corrected - in those days I was made to wear a contraption at night. In Germany later a dentist unnecessarily extracted a tooth when I was 18 - they were paid a flat insurance rate and extraction was faster than treatment. When I arrived in America the college sent me to a dentist who was horrified by my poisonous fillings and replaced them all. Soon after I lost another tooth, had a bridge, that broke - and had my first top rate dentist when we came to Geneva in 1957, Dr.Ackerman, who built a bridge that lasted a long time. Arrived back in nyc in 1962 I asked Ruth Bader Ginsburg for her dentist - we had given hospoitality to her husband in Geneva. Through her I came to Dr.Seligman - who truly loved dentistry and even when my funds dwindled after Robert divorced me in 1967 he kept my teeth in good shape (Robert left him at the request of a new wife, ended up with a tooth extraction, no antibiotics and in the hospital with a heart infection - twice - all that bad dentists can do also to rich people - in Amherst my son had a neighbor, a beautiful Duch woman, whose dentist friend botched something and she was in so much permanent pain, she killed herself.) In America only the very richest get really good dental care - and they also have to be smart. The moment someone does open their mouth I am aware of their teeth - and what it tells about them. After Dr.Seligman retired I found my way to Dr.F.- he was the dentist of a friend of a friend, whom I never met, Shelby, who raved about him but since has left him. I came to him when he had  newly started his practice on West End Ave. - in the 1980's - at first my problems were still minor enough and I could pay him - even paid for a couple of friends to see him - he is one of the very few people who understands me - and as my problems grew and I could no longer afford his fees he continued to treat me - and then - seven yeasrs ago zI begsan taking a beta blocker to keep my bloodpressure under control - he suspected it was acidifying my saliva - dry mouth is a side effect it announces in a long list - - alas my not so good medical doctors (could write about them at length) - only said - your blood pressure is great, keep taking them, never seemed to hear what I was saying about my teeth - that begsn rotting, then falling out - until one day my sweet dentist came up with what he called a bridge, later a prosthesis - beautiful teeth - I called them my decoration teeth - I looked great at the weddings of my grandsons - do keep getting compliments about my looks - only - alas - still losing more teeth this bridge no longer has a support - in September my dentist said I needed dentures - a hard blow Still, he kept putting it off, I happy to still have something fixed in my mouth - only - they have begun falling out - a very sinking feeling - this time I went to him a week ago - he cemented them back in - but by Saturday when I was in a restaurant in Northampton with my family they one again fell out - already before feeling rattly - making me very nervous on top of being alwsays nervous - I have to have to hold on to them while I speak - can really only drink something through a straw - called again this morning at 9 a.m. - the same assistasnt has been there since he started his practice - he had briefly worked on Wall Street before going to dentistry - truly loving what he is doing - happy to help people. He was happiest going one time to the Dominican Republic, he took his assistant, she is Spanish speasking, other times to Nicaragua - if he could he would do that permanently - sadly reporting the terrible state of the teeth of the people - dangerous infections - no modern machinery - little time - for the most part he is very sad only to be able to help them with extractions So I am approaching the end of my time for this morning - my eyes on my watch - do plan to read what I wrote on Saturday in the Northampton Library - they bought stickers to put on the letters of the keyboard to make them easy reading for the old. Excellent computer, lovely librarian - hope I was not too indiscreet - luckily I do share a couple of fellow mothers, women my age, who struggle with their relationships with their children as I do - making me realize how wonderful my sons are. From their point of view of course it is I who causes the glitches - and yes - I was writing about the lonely old women - about my mother, so dissatisfied with me - and I blaming her for divorcing my sweet father who was a wonderful companion to her - she loved making money and did well - he had no knack for making money - and she scorned him on this account. He left a couple of days I left in 1951 - she was 49 - and all I heard from then on - the worst fate that can befall a woman is to be old and alone. I held on to Paco for dear life - began living alone in 1988, I was 56 - and yes, I too can now sing and write about the hardships - and indignities - of being an old woman alone. We are not meant to live alone - and these days - the first question doctors ask: are you living alone. It's getting harder and harder - if I had more money..... My sons were much happier with me as long as I came with a companion - I ask more of them than they can give - watch them struggle - feel guilty - and other old women write about this also. What I also mesnt to mention was that on Friday night we went to see "I am not your nigger" - a much praised movie - expensive, full of flashy stuff - next day I read in the Saturday nyt, a profile on a black man who is in Syria documenting with his video camera the horrors committed there - many by Americans - and that should be shown in the movie theaters - not old history that we know about - but what is happening right now - Yemen, Afghanistan - The other thing that came to my attention was the obituary of the man who wrote Bridges of Madison - in two weeks - a runaway best seller - he did have a Ph.D. in business - also, as I recall he showed the story to a friend who was in publishing - I often throught, I too could have written in two weeks a book about my encounter in New Hampshire with Stephen W. in 1988 - I 55, he 32 - his wife had just taken up with a British lover - and my Paco had set off in East Hampton in the search of the heiress who had eluded him since his arrival in America in 1945 - he found a few - but parents put a quick stop to the relationships. And so, there were Stephen an I consoling each other on a very memoriable trip from Los Angeles to Dearing, New Hampshire - an excellent novel - and the relationship continued in some fashion until 2007 when he broke off all relations with his former life - a novel I have written, some place in the external drive of my computer my grandson set up. The tale of poor Eastern European Jews coming to America in the late 19th century - the rise of his father to a high earning psychiatrist in Westport, Connecticut - I met one of his patients - for both his sons he bought farms - I stayed on both - the psychiatrist was a frustrated farmer, studied books on seeds, the best raspberries I've ever eaten - Israeli wisdom in the watering system - the psychiatrist abandoned his terribly depressed wife after a long marriage, she a cripple by then and took off with a patient - I have googled him - his older son lives in the booniest of boonies in a hollow in Appalachia - southern tip of Virginia - my friend I suspect living on Bank Street - but his family has no interest in finding him. Very, very sad, A saga. I have written the whole saga up. Ah well, the author of Bridges of Madison became a a millionaire - and I was berated last night by a friend for writing this here blog - she one of many people who feel exposing oneself and others to the public is - indecent    got to run   Marianne

This just in from Cohesion Arts
New Post has been published on http://cohesionarts.com/2017/01/02/whered-paul-go/
Where'd Paul Go??
I can’t really know if anybody besides me has been asking that question, but if you’re one of the regulars around here (the numbers may not be legion, but I know they are sincere…) you may have been wondering why the frequency of posts to this site dropped off dramatically in the second half of last year (2016).
At least, I hope somebody noticed, and even if nobody did notice, I’m going to attempt to explain the absence.
So, where did Paul go?
He sorta went into hiding for awhile. His innate tendency to be reclusive and withdrawn when things “go all pear-shaped” got the better of him for several months.
Or, rather, maybe, he just had the wind kicked out of him, and he’s been trying to catch his breath.
Or maybe he’s been thrown into the middle of a lake and is treading water, trying to figure which shore to swim to.
Yeah, that’s it. Treading water.
Chalk it all up to disruption on a personally cosmic scale.
– – – – – – –
I remember exactly when the fabric of my universe started to tear: April 29, 2016.
Ann and I were in Portland, Oregon. She got back in the car and said,
“They want me to start August 1st.”
At that moment, the Big Bang Theory went into full reverse and my Universe started to implode….
We were in Portland to visit “the kids” – that would be Ann’s two sons, James and Robert (they are by no means “kids” – I can never remember their exact ages but it’s somewhere in the vicinity of 40 years old), her daughter-in-law – Robert’s wife, Melissa – and, more notably, Robert and Melissa’s baby daughter, Ann’s first – and quite possibly her only – grandchild, Juniper Rae.
Juniper Rae
We’d gone to Portland ostensibly for Juniper’s first birthday. She was born in May of 2015, and we’d both flown up to Portland for that; Ann had gotten there within hours of the baby’s arrival, I followed a week later. Photos here.
Now we were back for the first birthday, and Major Changes were afoot. They’d started in earnest the previously fall, but really the fuse started burning toward an inexorable explosion as soon as Melissa’s pregnancy was announced back in the summer of 2014.
The fuse started burning with that announcement, but the first cherry bomb didn’t go off until a year later, when Ann let me know that sooner or later she was moving to Oregon. And that I could come… if I wanted. It was all about being a grandparent. Which concept I might not have been sufficiently enthusiastic about, owing in part perhaps to the fact that I’d never met the prerequisite of being an actual parent myself.
“I’m going to find a job and I might just pack up and move,” she said, back in November of 2015. “If you’d like to come with me that’s great. If you don’t, that’s fine, too.”
Juniper was about 6 months old when Ann threw down that gauntlet.
Now here we were in Portland roughly another six months later, and the prophecy was coming true.
Prior to flying out to Portland for Juni’s birthday, Ann had started making… arrangements. Ann is a nurse, and for the past nearly two decades she has worked for a multinational corporation, a health care company that has offices and clinics all over the country. Prior to our trip to Portland, she started scanning the company’s bulletin boards to see what sort of opportunities she could find in the Portland area.
Sure enough, there was a new clinic opening in a Portland suburb, and Ann arranged an interview.
We flew to Portland on Thursday, April 28. The next morning I dropped her off for her interview and went off to a Starbucks nearby. She sent me a text when the interview was over, I went back to pick her up, she got back in the car and said “they want me to start on August 1.”
Cue the Big Bang Theory, only set it in reverse….
*
I have lived in Nashville (OK, I’m technically in Pegram, in the next county over, but who’s counting?) since February, 1994. It’ll be 23 years I’ve lived here come next Valentines Day.
That’s more than twice as long as I’ve lived anywhere in my whole life. When I was a kid I lived in Rumson, New Jersey, from age 0 until I was almost 12, when my mother and (new) step father moved us to a suburb in New Jersey that was closer to his office in New York. I also lived in Hawaii from 1980 until 1994, though the last two years of that residency was spent mostly in Los Angeles, going back and forth to Maui.
(Insert obscure Pop Culture reference here:
They even brought a neon sign!
In Hawaii, I lived near a line in an Eagles song:
You can leave it all behind and sail to Lahaina Just like the missionaries did so many years ago They even brought a neon sign ‘Jesus is Coming’, Brought the white man’s burden down, brought the white man’s reign
Yeah, that’s what I did in 1980. And I drove by that neon sign almost every day.)
So by any calculus, I’ve lived here in Middle Tennessee longer than I’ve lived anywhere. When people ask me “where you from” I will make a big deal about being from ‘Springsteen Country – Monmouth County, New Jersey.” But then I will tell them, “but I’ve lived in Nashville longer than I’ve lived anywhere, so I’m from here now….”
At the time Ann was living in Austin.  We’d met at a music festival in Texas the previous spring, and we maintained a “long distance relationship” until January of 1998, when she pulled up stakes and moved to Tennessee – to be with me.
Her nursing career had begun only a couple of years before. She was divorced (twice, but we don’t have to go into the second one) from the father of her two sons, who were in their early 20s and living with her and doing to school in Austin. When she decided to move to Nashville, she set ‘the boys’ out on their own and put her house up for rent. Then she put everything she owned in a U-Haul and with a friend made the trek from Texas to Tennessee.
The apartment I was living in at the time was tiny, and mostly filled with the CDs for songs.com – the online music service I’d started two years earlier. So Ann got her own apartment in the same complex where I lived in Bellevue, and for the next 18 months or so, we “lived together in separate apartments…”
In the spring of 1999 we bought a house together. When I’d first come to Nashville in 1994 real estate was still quite affordable, but by the time we started looking around in 1999 prices within Nashville / Davidson County were already inflating out of reach (never mind how much farther they’ve gotten out of reach since).  So we found a charming little ‘ersatz Cape Cod’ on an acre of land on a quiet cul-de-sac in Pegram, one exit off I-40 west of the last exit in Davidson County.
We put both or our names on the deed, and moved in together in May of 1999.
I sold that Internet music business later that year. At the very peak of the Internet Bubble Gaylord Entertainment came knocking and offered us stupid money for a tiny business. My partners (Tom Kimmel and Michael Camp) and I pondered the proposition for about 15 seconds and said “OK.” We closed the deal in December ’99, and the first call I made after banking the proceeds was to the bank that held our mortgage, which I paid off.
Perhaps due to some family history (my father died when I was 7), I’ve never been one for making or pursuing goals in life. But the one dream/fantasy/goal I’d ever had as to live in a paid-for house. I notched that one at the end of 1999. By the time that happened, Ann and I had already been living there for about six months.
Ann and I got married in September, 2000. We went on a two-week honeymoon to England and Germany. We got rained on at Ludlow Castle in the Cotswolds, and went through crazy King Ludwig II’s Fantasyland Castle in Bavaria. Then we returned to hour shared house in Pegram and settled in “for the duration.”
Once again proving that “everything is permanent… for as long as it lasts.”

Here is where, in the first draft of this reminiscence, I started to go into some detail about how Ann and I had moved in to the house together and the considerable (and costly!) improvements we made over the years. How the deal with Gaylord Entertainment went south within a year, and how I’ve been trying to figure out what I’m going to do when I grow up ever since.
How I went into a form of hiding in the days and weeks after Ann departed.
But that’s all a lot more detail than I need to go into for the purposes of this testimonial. Maybe another time…
Instead, we return to Portland in April and May. Ann and I stayed there about a week. Juni had her first birthday party, attended by children and their parents from Rob and Melissa’s community of friends. I took pictures.
And the wheels started turning toward Ann’s departure. I say “Ann’s departure” because from the moment she got back in the car, it was obvious that she was moving to Portland… and I was not. At least, not yet….
We came back to Nashville, and almost immediately, Ann started pulling things together and packing things up. Over the ensuing several weeks, things that we had shared for years started disappearing. Things like the steak knives we’d used since 1999. She stopped feeding the birds in the backyard. It was always little things, but it was little things that added up to a big thing.
If you’ve read this far, I think you get the gist.
Ann packed up her Subaru SUV and drove off with her friend Evelyn (Thelma and Louise!!) and left for Portland on July 20.

Amid all the other cosmic/global upheavals of the past 12 months, I have been going through my own fundamental disruption and realignment.
I have been to Portland three times in the 5-1/2 months since Ann moved there. She has yet to visit Nashville.
And I have been, for the most part, creatively inert. I haven’t written much, I haven’t taken any pictures, I haven’t played much guitar. I’ve posted only a few things to this blog, and there hasn’t been a “Weekly Digest” since the week before the election.   What little output I have made has been pretty much  confined to Facebook – which lends it self to short, quick, snarky diatribes that don’t require a whole lot of actual thought.
Maybe I’ve been quiet because it’s hard to keep creative energy flowing when all the energy you have is just going into riding the waves of an emotional roller coaster, when it takes all your strength to just hold yourself together when it feels like the world around you is falling apart. Like I told my therapist recently, “I’m exhausted.”
For as long as it has been – too long, really – since my business blew up in 2000, I have fully expected that I would find something to do that would spring from my own creative energy. First I wrote a book and got it published. Thinking I’d found my new calling as a “biographer of obscure 20th century scientists” I went on to write another. That turned into six years going down a rabbit hole in which there was no fucking rabbit.
After that, I turned my attention to photography, and even my therapist thought I was “on to something” when I first started creating the “Portals of Stone” from my trip to the UK in the spring of 2013. I started exhibiting at a gallery in the Arcade. I tried to own my identity as “an artist.” But mostly what I got was a first-hand education in how truly difficult that is.
Long and short of it, really nothing I’ve undertaken over the past 15 years has come to fruition anything like that company I started back in 1995. I’ve spent all that time as “an entrepreneur between startups” or “an author between books.” Or a photographer wandering among medieval ruins, looking for continuity in time and space…
But once I was living alone, I finally found a partial answer to the question I’ve been asking myself at 4:00AM every morning for the past 15 years, “what will I do when I grow up?”
I finally broke down and got a real “job.”
For the past four months, I have been working for Apple, at their store in the Green Hills Mall in Nashville, where I am a “product specialist.” It’s a glorified title for a retail salesperson, but I rather like the work and I seem well-suited for it.
I really have prided myself, over the course of my life generally, but of the past decade-and-half specifically, for never having worked for any giant corporations. The two previous exceptions where a brief stint as a securities peddler for the Maui branch of a Wall Street brokerage, and then my 10 months as an ‘executive’ for Gaylord Entertainment.
Neither of those situations was a particularly good fit. The Wall Street thing dissolved when I decided instead to go to Los Angeles and study music. At Gaylord, I was “the New York Jewish bull in Gaylord’s Southern Christian China shop.”
But as giant corporations go, Apple is a good one – at least from the perspective of a rank-and-file employee at one of their retail stores. The environment is stimulating and supportive; the hours are flexible and predicated as much on my own schedule  as theirs.  Since I get to spend the hours there talking about products that I use personally, that I know almost inside and out, it’s just the most natural fit I was ever going to find. And given what else was going on in my life when I applied for the job, I am grateful that they looked at my resume (…”What, you haven’t really had a job for 15 years?…) and said “OK.”
So for the past few months, I have been spending most of my waking hours seeking an unexpected refuge in the form of a conventional “day job” that I actually look forward to going to every day. As challenging as some of the customer interactions can be sometimes (“…Whaddya mean you don’t know your password…???”), it’s always a bit of a let down when it’s time to leave. And I really like the person I turn into when I go out on the floor.
So a lot of my time and energy over the past 4 months has gone into adapting to a very different reality from everything that went before.
– – – – –
Earlier today I opened WordPress for the first time in weeks (months?) and posted two items. And I’ve been writing this gem all day. It’s literally the first time I have spent a whole day in my own creative space in several months.
So maybe there is something to this “dawning of a new year” business, even if it does mean that Donald-Fucking-Trump is going to be President for the next four years (or until we nuclear-annihilate ourselves, which ever comes first).
It feels like the fog is lifting. That maybe there’s some light at the end of this tunnel, though I suspect there could be more tunnel before I actually get to the light.
This will do for now.
But that’s where Paul went.
