I just remembered that up until 5th grade, all of the sports teams I was in weren't separated by gender. I played basketball and baseball with boys. And we did just fine.

It wasn't until 6th grade when they segregated it by gender. It didn't make sense to me. I was now in softball because of baseball, because "softball is for girls" and "baseball is for boys" (which confused me bc my dad was on an adult softball team).

Now, my brother's all-male team didn't win a single game. My all-girls team won every single one.

They presented the boys' team with this HUGE trophy, and if you wanted replicas of it, they were $30 each.

My team was presented with a very small trophy. Extras were $5.

That's when I decided gender-segregated sports were bullshit.

#my mom went off on my brother's coach for that #said that it wasn't fair that my brother's team got to celebrate more than us despite actually winning #(it was through the same sports program)#she said she wasn't gonna pay $30 for a trophy whenever he was a horrible coach #bc the boys he had when they were on my team with my coach did just fine #their coach was this horrible egotistical guy who would scream at tbem for not doing good enough #when he didnt even KNOW HOW TO PLAY and was just there bc his kid was praying #my coach was this cool ass dad that was very calm and gentle with us #the coach was like ''oh so you don't think your son deserves to celebrate?''#my mom was like ''he should but he needs to learn that he can't be rewarded for losing while #my daughter is barely rewarded for winning and i don't want to teach him that gender inequality is okay''#(my mom is cool af sometimes)#we both quit playing after that

this may not be very coherent bc I have a narsty cold but it’s something I don’t see talked about much— I’ve been thinking about how much I enjoy the fact that Peter Parker/Spider-Man is kind of creepy. Like. I love that he’s got that freaky “teleport when you’re not looking” ability spiders have, the creepy crawling, the fast and unpredictable movements, the eerie stillness, the hanging, the warning that they’re around with entangling traps or even just dissolving cobwebs that let you know they’re in the area. the kind of animalistic, unnatural, disturbing parts of being a spider that makes spiders, and spider-man, so cool

#spider-man #I got reminded abt this last night w that scene in the first Raimi spider-man movie where Peter is hiding #and everytime someone looks at where he was he’s crawled to another location so fucking quickly EXACTLY like how spiders do #when he crawls around super fast or slowly and it kind of evokes the same ‘oh jeez’ feeling when spiders do it #when he’s just hanging in a corner completely stone still and you know he’s getting ready #I’m sure villains and the like get a little freaked when they see his webs around the same way you’d be like ‘oh god that’s a big spider’#when you see a new and big ass spider web in the basement #the way he’s got the ability now to just. crawl in such a creepy way #bc his tendons and such are just. mutated in a way now that he can just contort #I think spiders are cool (I have a slight phobia but I fight hard against it bc spiders are cool af) but they have the occupational hazard #of having very fast bug movements that just set off alarm bells in the human brain bc evolution #and I love that Peter has that now. sometimes it’s like it’s just the costume that gives him the spider like stuff #but he’s just Like that. it’s easy to feel like he’s just a normal human guy under there but he’s no longer that at least physically #that’s one of the reasons I absolutely love it when Peter does spider stuff in normal human clothes. it’s like a reminder

as a venture bros fan in this current media landscape, i feel myself often suppressing the urge to be like "venture bros did that first" "venture bros walked so [X] could run" about a lot of things that are comparatively recently trending in media, especially in regards to using geek genre satire as a jumping off into a bigger concept. like i could bring up a lot of examples on this

but i'm writing this post because i can't help but think of the thing venture bros did first that they didn't mean to, which is create a character that's a critique of hyper-masculinity that a certain subset of fans completely missed the point on and uncritically treat as a idol to look up to and emulate.

sometimes i remember how i was like at school and damn, am i grateful i've finished that part of my life... and this is all because i was thinking of how much i love chainsaw man and then i remember my lil sister's got a friend in school who like it too which... reminds me that if i was in school when chainsaw man aired i wouldn't even dare to admit i like it to my friends lol

that kind of animanga is somehow often associated with straight guys here, and if my friends, who are girls, know i like that kind of story... they'll really look at me like i'm a weirdo

especially if i say i actually like denji and understood him as a character
