Gerard: There’s a song on every record that allows us to push ourselves further. On ‘Bullets’ it was [Headfirst For Halos] and on ‘Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge’ it was ‘You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison.’ This actually started out as a joke. Then we realised that, if we could pull it off, it would allow us to do so much more because it would prevent us from getting pigeonholed. We worked on it to the point that it wasn’t a joke at all which, in turn, allowed us to do a song like ‘...Prison.’

It happened naturally because it was only after we finished writing it that we realised where it might take us. We had a thrashy pop song in our laps and we thought, ‘This doesn’t sound like anything.’ Maybe it was a bit of a Beatles rip-off, maybe it was a bit Britpop but that was all I could think of.

Again, it had a visual quality. That song and ‘Vampires Will Never Hurt You’ both gave us a real sense of identity. They brought in the entire gothic thing. It was those songs that made people think we were a vampire band! 

Phantom Thief outfit breakdown: pt 7

This is a continuation of my previous post and series regarding my opinions on the phantom thieves' metaverse costumes, prompted by a poll by @waywardsalt. I will link all of these together as they're finished.

Akechi - Ann - Makoto - Sumire - Futaba - Yusuke

Next Up: Detective Prince Akechi! It's time for the marching band prince outfit. This one is much more break down than changes tbh.

For some reason he doesn't have a piece from the set of official art I've been including, so he gets this (does let us see the back though). I'm starting to see more and more people say they think this one is hideous, but I actually don't agree! From a design and character perspective, this outfit is striking, very coherent, and richly detailed without feeling overly cluttered. I think part of the reason it's so jarring is because its so on the nose for the prince personal and thus comes across as sort of childish and impulsive, like it was chosen on a whim, but I do think that's intentional. The purpose of this outfit is to contrast directly with Joker's, the white counterpoint to his black ensemble, lure the thieves into a false sense of security, and to make the black mask outfit more of a shock, and it accomplishes this in my opinion.

I also like that's its a subtle form of rebellion that's very specific to Akechi's situation; he's a bastard child being used by his powerful father with little recognition, so the idea of being a prince, someone powerful and important because of his birth and his familial connections, IS a form of rebellion for him. The rest of the thieves (besides Futaba and Joker, who're there for the 8/28 trauma dump) don't know this though, so it flies over their heads. It's the pristine, white prince to the black mask's dark knight.

The most obvious inspiration here is the fairy tale prince aesthetic, playing off his media moniker, but it also incorporates a significant amount of formal military regalia. I'm not super familiar with this particular branch of history and fashion, but it seems very European 1700s and 1800s to me, very Napoleonic. The white color seems very Napoleon's Grande Armee to me, but the cut, double row of buttons, and shoulder epulettes scream 1912 American Navy full dress uniform. Ironically, this mix of military gravitas and fairy tale stylization means that the outfit ends up looking startlingly similar to the duelist uniforms of Revolutionary Girl Utena in my eyes, which is probably not the exact vibe they were going for.

The red and gold accents help break up the monotony of the white very well, and the piping on the arms and legs provide a nice lengthening effect. The mask is very interesting, because while it follows the European vibe, its distinctly not military; instead, it pulls on two different types of masks: the zanni and the plague doctor mask. The zanni mask is Italian, named for the character it denoted in commedia dell'arte plays; this character was a servant from the countryside and often a trickster character, which nicely alludes to how Akechi is the rival trickster to Joker in Yaldaoboath's game, as well as the way he's intentionally tricking both Shido and the thieves. The plague doctor mask is, obviously, the mask worn to prevent the spread of the black plague during medical examinations and treatment during its outbreak in the Renaissance, and I presume it relates to Akechi in the way he's been treated as a pest his whole life and is trying to maintain distance with the thieves during Sae's Palace.

There's no real changes I'd make here; I think this outfit does its job wonderfully, with a wealth of attention to detail and well used motifs. Most distaste with the costume is probably personal preference and the shock it gives you the first time you see it. It's definitely not something I'd ever wear but it gets the job done well. I place it 4th out of 10, with a solid score of 7/10.

No Significant Harassment

They're just a silly little guy. A jokester. Significant harassment if you will. Anyway, a more in depth run down: They're a city sized supercomputer built by a Buddhist adjacent society to figure out how to transcend the 'Great Cycle' (semi-metaphorical cycle of death and rebirth) in a safer way than the previous method (submerging oneself in the 'void sea' which is a mysterious golden liquid that dissolves whatever it touches). Despite being built for this express purpose NSH never really shows a pressing interest in ascension, even cracking jokes about those who are still looking for a solution. Whether this is due to indifference, dislike of, or humor to cope with being unable to ascend is not clear and really up to interpretation. Example: NSH: I wish them super good luck in that endeavor. How is it going to happen? Have the overseers gnaw through bedrock until their entire can crashes down in the void sea? BSM: Please be respectful when speaking of the Void Sea. Grey Wind, where did you hear this? CW: I really shouldn't say. He's going to attempt some sort of breeding program. Thought you might want to know. NSH: Haha with the slimers, lizards and etceteras? Surely the answer was in a lizard skull all along! He's very flippant, but does care very intensely for those close to him. NSH: Moon? It's me again. NSH: I do not know if you are receiving these. Please signal in any way you can. NSH: I need to talk to you. I need to know you're okay. NSH: … NSH: Its difficult for us to assist you over this distance. NSH: Even more difficult for us to do anything in the midst of these tantrums. NSH: Were going to try everything that we can. NSH: Just hold on a little longer. (Context for previous convo: They genetically engineered a super organism of a slugcat (the species you play as in Rain World) to help reset his coworker/sibling after her collapse and restart her systems. He was so desperate to fix her that he accidentally messed up the slugcat's (Hunter) genetic code and as a result it became riddle with the Rot (relatively similar to aggressive cancer) :( which parallels his other coworker/siblings condition who also has the rot. ) He canonically uses he/they pronouns too! Nonbinary swag! NSH has major internet troll vibes. He has sent a data pearl of "something distasteful" to his neighbors on several(?) occasions and causes chaos. If he had access to the wider internet he'd probably be an influencer So…yeah! Vote NSH this website likes the allure of heavy machinery and stuff like that so… there you go. Kind of a blorbo. Sally Swing

Her entire debut revolves around the entire concept that she could sing better than anyone else but for some reason in the Betty Boop comic, they decided that she should be so bad at singing that she causes bugs to explode [mod note: if you want to see Sally's debut, you can click here. it's a 6 minute cartoon, so not a big watch. also, a fun fact: Sally was intended to replace Betty, or at least take over the main cartoon spot, due to Betty's decline in popularity. it was the late 30s; flappers were out, swingers were in. unfortunately, the public didn't latch onto Sally like they did Betty, so she had that one appearance in the cartoons, and then faded into comic obscurity...]

heya op from the karlnapity number 1 post, i want to hear the theories you have as to why it got so popular it would sound interesting!

oh wow did not expect anyone to actually want to hear about this. thanks for asking!

so first thing, in terms of numbers on this: when i initially looked at this, i guessed at popular poly ships and figured out from this that karnapity was big; this time, i used @/toastystats' analysis from may 2021 to figure out big poly ships and then cross referenced their current numbers with karlnapity's-- they're ahead by at least 1000 works from the (presumed) next biggest poly ship, Bucky/Steve/Tony from the MCU.

This is super impressive! DSMP on AO3 has been one of the fastest growing fandoms in the last couple of years (toasty has stats about that as well, as does @/ao3-anonymous who does weekly fandom growth stats) and has absolutely exploded in terms of amount of works, though it's a bit hard to quantify due to only receiving its own fandom tag recently. Still, competing with the MCU, BTS, & BNHA, to name a few fandoms, is impressive as it's still such a new fandom compared to how long they've been around and been able to gather works.

In regard to why I think Karlnapity is popular, and to compare it to other popular poly ships, I think there's a few factors. In no particular order:

#1 - This one's easy. DSMP is hugely popular right now, and Karlnapity is one of a few significant canon ships in the world of the server. Other big ships (DNF, tntduo, beeduo, etc.) have less canonical status or are in some way fraught with RPF issues.

#2 - The ship is M/M/M. If you look at the stats I link above from toasty, M/M/M by far dominates poly ships, with F/M/M a ways behind. As you probably know, ships involving women tend to be far less popular, and vice versa.

#3 - This is where we get into my actual juicy analysis. The biggest reason I think Karlnapity is huge is it's canonical status, which is BY FAR what distinguishes it from other poly ships.

Below is a list of the biggest poly ships, as of May 2021 (again, from toasty, linked above). Obviously Karlnapity has shot up in terms of stats, but this provides us with a solid basis for other poly ships.

Most of the other popular poly ships are non-canonical ships, with the basis of the ship being people want ot3s and there's three central characters in these pieces of media (Bucky/Steve/Tony, Castiel/Dean/Sam, Poe/Finn/Rey, Hermione/Harry/Ron). For BTS, it's a similar situation but instead of three main characters the band has 7 members.

The two ships that are canonical/semi-canonical (depending on your interpretation of things like word of god and possible retconning) are Karlnapity and Hardison/Parker/Eliot. I'll start with the latter; feel free to skip this paragraph if you don't want to read through me talking about Leverage.

If you're not a Leverage fan, you probably are not familiar with this OT3 and may be confused about its popularity considering it is a MUCH smaller fandom than the other ones (only ~9k total fics). Hardison/Parker/Eliot is also the #1 ship in the Leverage fandom tag, whereas the rest of these are generally quite a bit further down in the ship tags. The reason for this is that the relationship dynamic on the show is very intimate, I would say a majority of leverage fans ship the ot3 without question, AND the creators have on multiple occasions encouraged and endorsed the ship. Additionally, they have made the ship canonical (in a sense) by stating that the finale of the original show was meant to end with the three of them in a relationship, so they hold a semi-canonical, word of god status in that sense. However, for much of the show, only Hardison and Parker are explicitly dating and it is my understanding that in the recent revival that is still the case (haven't watched it yet, planning to soon). Still, it is far more canonical than most of the other ships on this list, which is why it's so high up despite being a smaller fandom, and this feeds into why I think Karlnapity is so popular.

Okay! Back to Karlnapity!

Karlnapity is the only ship on this list that has full, in-canon support for it being a romantic, polyamorous ship. That is, as you probably know, incredible rare in fandoms of this size. The three of them are romantically & phsyically affectionate (when they were together) and explicitly involved, which cannot be said for any other ship on the list above.

All this to say, the biggest reasons Karlnapity is so popular are that the fandom is hugely popular right now, the ship involves men, and the relationship is canon.

Tomb Mold — The Enduring Spirit (20 Buck Spin)

Brief excursus into the Biz: It may be a sign of how big Tomb Mold is getting that 20 Buck Spin had publicists hold off on widely distributing promotional materials for The Enduring Spirit until after the record had dropped into its wider markets for purchase and circulation (NB, this reviewer has no illusions about his relative significance in the Biz, thank goodness — but much juicier metal review venues like Grizzly Butts and No Clean Singing seem to be rushing text to press, having received their copies of the music relatively late in the game). Certainly it’s significant that Pitchfork has the death metal outfit on its radar, publishing a “band announces forthcoming record” notice for The Enduring Spirit and, more urgently, including it on a list of “9 New Albums You Should Listen to Now.” Yikes. Is Tomb Mold ready to be exhumed and exposed to the light?

The album art for The Enduring Spirit suggests that’s the case. A feminine, humanoid figure greets sunshine and verdant plant life, arising from vaguely mechanical and organic forms that root into a soppy, brown, slithering morass. Maybe it’s not meant to be allegorical, but check out these lyrics from album opener “The Perfect Memory (Phantasm of Aura)”: “We are given the heat and friction of light / To moult in our delirious memories / Now we dream only in familiar depths / What in the bitter night speaks to us?” That sure sounds like allegory: the “familiar depths” and “bitter night” of death metal, and a band that want “to moult” and change in “the heat and friction of light.” Sure, Max Klebanoff growls the words in death metal’s characteristically harsh fashion, but the song’s precise, musical riffage and super clean production project the tune toward brighter terrain.

There are listeners that will be drawn to and make much of the brightest moments on The Enduring Spirit: the breezy string work at the beginning and in the middle section of “Will of Whispers”; the guitar tone and most theatrical moments in “Servants of Possibility,” which may put some in the mind of Steve Howe, c. 1971; the long slide through melodic atmospherics in the second half of “The Enduring Spirit of Calamity.” This reviewer prefers the tougher stuff — like the signature riff of “Flesh as Armour” and the neck-snapping dynamics of “Angelic Fabrications.” But others will point to the clean, proggy elements of the record and comparisons to Dream Unending and Blood Incantation will surely abound.

In some ways, the comparisons are valid. Guitarist Derrick Vella is one half of Dream Unending, and that project’s experiments in “ambient death metal” (as we seem to be calling it) have no doubt influenced his contributions to Tomb Mold. And the SF concepts that Tomb Mold has worked through on previous records, like Planetary Clairvoyance (2019), resemble Blood Incantation’s space-opera sensibility. But inasmuch as all that is true, the culture industry is no doubt delighted at the prospect of death metal bands that are somehow more “musical,” or more “serious” — bands that Pitchfork can call purveyors of “Best New Music” alongside Boy Genius and Big Thief and Lana Del Rey. They can have it, and Tomb Mold can have the bright lights. I’ll stay in the dark, where things are moister and nastier, and generally more interesting.

Then it shut down for good shortly after. I guess that was my only real attempt to reach out to a community that fit me. One thing that crosses my mind frequently is how alienated I feel amongst my friends and co-workers. But I should try and make a effort to meet people who make me feel normal. Find those that let me talk and listen to what I have to say. And hold an actual conversation. That's my hope, so if you find common interests with me, feel free to reach out.

I love music, in a weird way. There isn't a day that passes without my phone blaring music. I love rock, it's a drug for me. Goosebumps shoot down my arms when I hear an amazing song (that rush of dopamine is indescribable!) . There have been so many sub genres that I've listened to. Bands that I loved and grew out of, searching for that next high. And maybe a couple that I'll revisit from time to time (like Underoath and their recent album Voyeurist ) My taste is always evolving. A couple artists I'm listening to right now is Andromeda, Animals as Leaders, and whatever prog metal auto plays on YouTube. I look forward to sharing the songs I love with someone I feel will appreciate it. Because my music is so personal and cherished that its like a window into my soul. I don't remember the names of the songs or know the members of each band member (or any). Their significance on music, or special techniques they use. My ADHD brain isn't all that great at remembering that information (unless I studied it often which seems like a chore tbh). I just embrace that song or album till my interest fades. Like the song Chino Moreno did with Polyphia 😂 listened to that song on repeat with no shred of self control.

Video games are my shit, if I show my steam library 💀 there's a ton of titles. And a lot of money senselessly spent. Senselessly because the only title that I keep coming back to is Apex Legends. Everything else is temporary. Although Overwatch 2 is a lot of fun! Still frustrating at times but it provides the challenge and multiplayer competition I enjoy. Maybe you game too and we can clap cheeks together!

If I'm not playing video games or don't feel like it. You can find me either watching random channels on YouTube or anime. I'm gonna apologize in advance, a lot of popular titles are lost on me. The ones that I'd probably have in common with most fans are Attack on Titan, Chobits, Psycho-pass (only the first season) Demon Slayer, and Steins Gate. Studio Ghibli is good as far as movies go but the ones I absolutely love is "I want to eat your pancreas" "A Silent Voice" "Josee, the tiger and the fish" and "Her Blue Sky." My absolute favorite anime series is Ergo Proxy. Funny cause my current DnD character's name is based off Vincent. It's an older title, super confusing and the anime doesn't give viewers the backstory to understand the significance of proxy's and their role given from their "creators". It's not regarded as an amazing anime. But for me, it's the similarities of Vincent's character development to my own. I didn't realize it till recently after I moved on from my own issues that I ignored for a long time. Vincent has his memory wiped to forget his past self and the anguish he faced. His new companions give him a new perspective on life. And when he faces the reality that he tried to escape, his experience with the people he cares for helps him overcome that shadow. I love you mom for helping me let go of the weight I held onto for so many years.

Lastly, my cat Mei who I got from an old co-worker when I worked at pizza hut. This cat is like the 10% of felines that isn't a Dee Dee mega doo doo head. Seriously! Mei won't jump on the kitchen counter tops, dining tables, or my PC desk. She's super gentle when we play. Like I use my hands to wrestle her and she never bites hard or claws me. Nor has she done this with my friends. And as much as she doesn't like being held, she tolerates it from me or a complete stranger with zero aggression. Honestly, she's one of the best things that has happened in my life. I love her. And yes I named her after Mei from Overwatch which is a perfect fit.

The Buns! A Fine Boi!

Alrighty-- since I'm not familiar with the proper etiquette, here, I'll give you three facts that are beyond dispute, as far as I can tell, and, separately, three facts according to my headcanons and personal feelings and whatnot.

Based on Actual Canon:

Definitely was not decommissioned by Monty, but his enscrapment was absolutely used to frame Monty in some way. I can only infer that the culprit had a vested interest in both offing Bonnie for some reason, and for elevating Monty into the role of bassist in the Glamrock band... and perhaps casting aspersions against him along the way. --But this is speculation on my part.

"Mascot", per se, of the Bonnie Bowl area of the Pizzaplex, which would suggest that he had an affection for the game in very much the same way as Monty has for golf and Roxy has for racing, for example. I would be inclined to speculate that he would have some special routine (perhaps a meet-and-greet, perhaps some other kind of celebration), should someone hit a particularly impressive score. Not necessarily bowl a perfect game-- it should at least still be a somewhat-achievable prize-- but still... I don't know. Is 250 a reasonable threshold? Either way... again, speculation.

Of important provenance to the Fazbear brand. Granted, this requires a certain amount of inference on our part, as the audience, but it's made clear that the Pizzaplex is aware of the history of the brand-- and therefore, of its characters. Consequently, we can deduce that it's no secret, to the stakeholders nor to their customers, that Bonnie is part of "the original four", alongside Freddy, Chica, and Foxy. Where we go from there, however, is less clear. It feels like Bonnie Bowl is as "significant" an attraction as Fazer Blast, Mazercise, Roxy Raceway, and Gator Golf, whereas the pirate-themed area feels more... ancillary-at-best. From that, I would be inclined to suggest that Foxy stepping down from the band was a more voluntary thing, as part of an agreed-upon rebranding; but then, I can't explain the Bonnie/Monty dichotomy. Both seemed of equal prominence within the brand (such that they both had a top-billing attraction themed after them), so the most logical explanation would be that Gator Golf was added later, with the intention of it being built in The Area Formerly Known As Bonnie Bowl-- much like the relationship between the Industrial and Ocean Zones (or, later, the Medieval and Eastern Zones) of the Crystal Maze... but that's not what canon actually gives us, so... I don't know. This ended up just being idle, speculative ramblings.

Headcanons:

When Vanessa started working at the Pizzaplex, he stopped lying down. I don't mean to suggest that this was a thing he did regularly; just, rabbits only really lie down and spread out if they feel absolutely safe, and they're... generally naturally inclined towards being timid, because they're sensitive to that sort of thing. So after her installation as a security-guard, he only ever "sleeps"-or-similar standing up or while seated.

Great with kids, because he can be super-charming when alone with adults, deceptively sweet when around a mixed-age group, and playfully mischievous once the grown-ups have gone. In other words, he'd be in his element around adults in a drink-positive environment, but he's just as at home entertaining kids-- whether by sincerely being a child-friendly kids' entertainer, or by pretending to be that in order to meet with parents' approval, only to do an about-face and enable the kids to be little gremlins with him. As befits a bnuuy, he'd be good at... playing it by ear~

Homoromantic af, when there aren't guests around. Would absolutely, and I quote, "h*ld h*nds" with Freddy or give Monty a li'l peck on the cheek, knowing it'd get them flustered, but that same kind of mischief just wouldn't occur to him with Roxy or Chica.
