okay, just read about my lovers again. feeling calm. 😌

#idk why i wrote this post like a facebook status… don’t worry about it #not all of them… like three of them #i actually no longer want him to commit murder #but i still think it could happen #not sure if he’s capable of being a fake bitch - but i’d be interested in finding out #honestly everything i ‘want’ to happen in this book is just me wanting to put the characters in the most WILD situations #just to see what they’d do #i need to knowwwwwwww #i told my mom the plot so far and she’s convinced that it’s all gonna tie together in the end #i’m not so sure #i don’t think it’s that kind of book… the storylines are linked thematically - not necessarily narratively #so the endings will depend on each other but not always in a direct sense is my prediction #i don’t really care how it ends to be honest… i care about everything that’s going to happen between now and then #still cannot believe i’m only about a third of the way through #there is still SO much more time for the characters to get pushed to their limits and i am HYPE for it #i love them - i’m rooting for them #to succeed or fail - whichever is more interesting

I miss when Hulu used to have a comments section under every video, there was always something interesting (in a human behavior curiosity kind of way) about scrolling down to see usually an absolutely ridiculous collection of people having a rowdy open forum discussion about something you just watched that you had a completely neutral non-reaction to

#unfortunately - everything still trends toward homogenization #people especially tech comanies can't just have their own fucign unique thing. they have to look and act like every other service #to ''''compete''' apparently (even though like... wouldn't having unique features be instead a NOVEL draw to your specific product? wouldn't #you want to stand out???)#Like OKCupid completely over-simplfying their site into bare bones sleek nothingness and taking away all the features that made it unique #in any way (high customization - various personality ranking scales and a LOT of various visible data/information) .. because oh yeah #actually we have to be tinder and just quick emoji blurb swipe swipe #Hulu trying to be netflix and taking away anything that made it stand out in any posiive way (comments section.. other things that I forget #since I've been using it since like 2009 or something)#Youtube.... everything youtube does.... god.......#All social media sites are exactly the same now with extremely minor differences and even then still frequently implement samey #features to try and close those differences #etc. etc.#ANYWAY . i think also the hulu comments sections were facebook linked - like..one of the ways you could actually verify yourself to #leave a comment was having a facebook login (AT LEAST in like 2010.. I don't remember if they changed this at some point)#so you could also usually (I think..?? again.. if I'm rmembering correclty) you could get to someone's facebook profile #from the comments section sometime. I used to watch stuff and then scroll down to see what The Masses were saying and sometimes #someone's comment would be so strange I'd like.. go investigate them as a person #see what type of posts they make on their personal facebook which was always way too public with none of their information #privated of course lol

I reblogged it earlier but I'm glad the Something Awful Forums 9/11 thread was archived because it's an incredibly important slice of internet history. For the record I think 9/11 was thousands of personal tragedies for the direct victims of the attacks but one big national farce that led to America's ongoing slide into fascism, and the nationalism and remembrance around it is a joke especially in the wake of the same amount of deaths every fucking day in the US during the height of coronavirus.

Nevertheless I think it's important that if you do not remember because you were too young or just didn't exist on Sept 11, 2001 to read the Something Awful 9/11 forums to get an idea of what the internet was like at the moment when America changed to 24 hour news cycles and renewed hyper-nationalism not seen since WWII.

This all happened before Twitter, Facebook, before Discord. Before smart phones. Before most people had cell phones. When a lot of people still had dial-up internet, even. Some people in the thread were relying on radio because internet and TV weren't keeping up.

It was a live event of internet denizens reacting to the biggest national event (and among the biggest international events) of the past 25 years. It was also a slice of what the internet was like at the turn of the millennium. Not only that, but people accurately calling out who was responsible, and what would result before the attacks even finished.

Keep in mind that the links that follow contain images of the event, lots of Islamophobia, people calling for the Middle East to be nuked, people blaming Palestine, casual racist and homophobic language (this was Something Awful after all), etc etc. They preserved the first 17 pages which spanned about 24 hours during the events. It's the origin of the "WATCH BUSH START A FUCKING WAR" screenshot.

Links under the fold. I've also annotated the pages with notes regarding the timeline and any posts of interest. Note the thread was preserved in Pacific Time even though the page says times are Eastern. That's incorrect. Post timestamps are 3 hours behind Eastern Time, which is the time zone where the attacks occurred:

Page 1 - Note the first post was edited to include images of the second attack. The thread started after the first plane hit. Second plane hitting the WTC happens here too.

Page 2 - Poster accurately calling out Bin Laden was responsible at 9:14 AM EST

Page 5 - First official acknowledgement it was a terrorist attack.

Page 9 - Commercial flights grounded by FAA (Federal Aviation Administration)

Page 11 - More reactions to collapse of first tower. People thinking it was a bomb or yet another plane. Rumors about a fourth plane just missing the White House (these are false and predate the actual 4th plane crash by minutes)

Page 12

Page 13 - By this point there's just rampant speculation about more bombs at the WTC, the US Capitol building being hit, etc (all false). Remember this is all just people reacting to TV news and radio and the rumor mill via phone, AIM, IRC, and maybe text messages.

Page 14 - By this point internet news sites are overwhelmed

Page 15 - Second tower collapses. First acknowledgement of the fourth plane that crashed in PA.

Page 16 - There's an abrupt time jump in the threads, I think it was the result of admins pruning the activity or the SA forums going down. This page starts on 9/12 even though it is page 16. American flag signatures and ribbons start appearing.

Tried to tip a tumblr blog at 1am and it was such a suspicious transaction it immediately put a full fraud freeze on my account

Fortunately, banks no longer just ask 'did you make that transaction' they want to make sure you weren't scammed into making that transaction and 5mins after their call will give away all your money anyway.

This is an honest to goodness life saving movement and I cannot be happier banks are adopting it

Unfortunately, it meant I had to have the most embarrassing financial call of my life

#well. the town im going to college in has a small drag scene so its not like that big a deal #but stilllll. would've been fun. and i would've had a friend to ease me into it bc ive never gone #idek if there's still a gay bar in my town #i mean ik there's cruising bc a couple of friends do it #and ofc dating apps and such #but i don't think there's a bar anymore the one everyone goes to closed down 😭 and idk which one they go to instead now #can't drink so idc but itd be nice to know. i think most gay ppl up here r either #too young to go to bars or somewhat closeted #like my civics teacher in middle school was gay but he was like. an former lawyer who moved up here bc he likes horses #dunno that he was going out on the town too much yk #and friends my age go on dating apps and such (#which is really not fucking safe at all but whatever i get it theres not much else to do here #and theres like one public park where people fuck #but no like bars or community centers afaik #i gotta fucking.
