Unplugged
Tumblr media
After decades of buying the cheapest Windows laptop available on the show floor at Best Buy and using them until they effectively destroyed themselves from within, my mom upgraded to the M2 MacBook Air last month1. As the dutiful "techie" son, I drove to my parents' place in New Jersey to help walk her through the process of setting up her first ever Mac — importing passwords and other preferences from iCloud, walking through how the dock and menu bar each function, explaining little differences in how window management works, etc. After about an hour of this I sat back and asked myself if there was anything else I needed to go over, anything markedly different about MacOS that was worth touching on for someone who had, until now, only used Windows.
"One last thing," I noted as I stood up and removed the MagSafe cable, "is that you're going to find yourself needing to charge this guy less than you're used to. It's much more portable than your last laptop. There's a reason when you walk into cafés almost everyone with a Windows laptop has theirs plugged into a wall and most of the people with MacBooks don't."
Apple dropped some updates to their Mac lineup today after some last-minute rumor-milling over the weekend. They're exciting releases2, and I'll let other, more qualified people explain why.
What really struck me was a piece of marketing material towards the end of the keynote that began with a title card: 3 Pros, 1 Day, 1 Battery Charge. It follows three creatives who all unplug their fully charged 2023 MacBook Pros at the same time and delve into their field of choice — one proceeds to film and edit 4k footage, the second recreates and old Zeiss lens via CGI along with a scene to shoot through said lens, and the third builds an iPad app. While they push the hardware past their perceived limits, the combined power of the M2 lineup of chips and the battery efficiency of the entire laptop effectively proves these three are more hampered by available time in the day than by the machine itself.

youtube
It's a great ad that gets to the heart of why I've found Apple's computing lineup so exciting since making my own switch way back when: It all feels frictionless due to the attention given to nuances like battery life. The big question for viewers, extrapolated out, is that if this laptop can cater to three super-users and survive an entire day's workload on a single charge, can you even imagine what's possible for yourself?
Creativity and recreation and work can all feel limited if you're confined to one specific space. While those kinds of limitations can sometimes be helpful, I've always found I'm more productive when I'm on the move.  There are entire teams at Apple who are not only aware of this, but are dedicated to it. How efficient can we make this device, plugged in or not? In conjunction with every other team collaborating to focus their attention on other seemingly menial elements like trackpad response, hinge design, or user experience touches, everything adds up to create The MacBook Experience: It's a machine built to go unnoticed.
While you're in your element, you shouldn't have to think about it.
If all goes well, you shouldn't even have to plug it in.
---
1  That's the same laptop I'm using to write this! Wow!
2 My biggest takeaway is that the Mac Mini lineup is here to stay for the time being, which is a relief to this M1 Mac Mini owner. To be clear: It is still the best computer I have ever owned, and at no point have I felt like I've gotten close to the ceiling of what that chip is capable of despite hitting it with game streaming, audio production, photo editing, video editing, and more. That said, if it ever does start to show it's age I'll be happy to know there will likely be another Mac Mini to replace it with.

I’ve used several mice, from cheap to expensive gaming status, and this affects it all– especially in situations where you need to meticulously cut something out, or you’re brushing something so small and delicate on a mask. This mainly applies to those who use an actual mouse compared to a trackpad or tablet. If you whipped the mouse left and slowly dragged it right, starting and ending at the same spot, you’ll find your cursor in a different position from where you started! Go ahead and try it! It was originally implemented to help precision and help those who have issues clicking and dragging in a minimal amount of space, but if you’re not used to the acceleration, it can definitely throw you off. That sensation is called mouse acceleration– basically the faster you move the mouse the less distance your hand has to travel to get from point A on the screen to point B and the slower you move, the more distance you have to move the mouse to get from point A to point B. I really noticed it when I was younger and played video games that needed precision, and maybe you have experienced it too. If you’ve ever switched from a PC to a Mac, there’s no doubt that you’ve realized that moving the mouse just isn’t the same– like something doesn’t feel right.

could you make the gym prompt a part 2 at visions place please 😁
The Playlist Chapter 1: Breathless
Wanda stared up at the high rise apartment building in front of her, scanning the lit windows to see if she could figure out which apartment was Vision’s. Referring to her phone, she saw the apartment number was 3C. Third apartment, third floor. Her eyes immediately went to a glowing window on the third floor There was a healthy golden pothos plant dangling in the open space, leaves bright and green, the stems spilling over the pot in long flowing lines. Did axe murderers keep lush plants?
Seems innocent enough, Wanda thought. She was still having a little trouble wrapping her mind around the fact that she’d agreed to going to this guy’s house after talking to him for less than five minutes. But there was something about him. Something she felt at her core that drew her to him. Saying no just wasn't an option.
She entered the lobby, searching for the buzzer for 3C and gaving it a long press. With hope, he'd heard it and she wouldn't have to press it again. It was hard enough to even press it once.
"Hello?" a voice came over the .
"H-Hi, it-it's Wanda" she stammered. "From the gym."
Did you really even need to clarify that, Wanda? Probably not.
"Hi Wanda. Come on up," Vision replied, his voice crackling through the speaker. With a loud buzz, the glass door unlocked and Wanda let herself inside.
Too late to go back now.
The third floor had a slight odor, like someone had burnt popcorn a few days prior and the aroma still hung lightly in the air, but apartment three stood out. It was adorned with a subtle copper pipe wreath with a few Tillandsias affixed to the bottom. Wanda smiled to herself at the decoration. Axe murderers definitely didn't deck out their front doors with air plants.
Wanda knocked on the door and heard shuffling almost instantly. The door swung open to reveal Vision, cleaned up and no longer sweaty. He'd traded his soaked tank top for a simple white button down, rolled at the sleeves and gray dress pants. At least she hadn't overdressed when she chose the flowing, white sundress from her closet. In fact, it seemed to match Vision perfectly.
Vision stepped to the side. "Please, come in," he said cheerfully.
As Wanda walked in she noticed the change in smell from the hallway immediately. This smell was familiar. It smelled like home.
"I hope you haven't eaten yet, I just finished making Paprikash," Vision explained, motioning to the kitchen. "I could fix you a bowl, if you'd like?"
"I'd love some," Wanda said, immediately realizing her mistake. What if he put something in her food? She followed Vision into the kitchen, watching his every move, just to be sure. As he handed her the bowl with a pure smile on his face, she felt bad for thinking the worst of him.
He fixed a bowl for himself and lead Wanda out of the kitchen and into a comfortable living room. In the middle of the room, there was a gray sectional complete with a chaise lounge on the right hand side and two matching recliners on either side.
"Please," Vision said, motioning to the living room. "Make yourself at home on the couch or one of the recliners. Unless you'd prefer to sit at the dining room table?"
"Oh no, no," Wanda said, plopping down on the chaise section of the couch. "This is just fine."
Vision took a spot on the recliner across from her, immediately digging into his bowl of paprikash, making sure to finish chewing before he spoke.
"So, what kind of music are you into?" he asked, taking another bite. He went silent to chew and continued. "I wasn't kidding about making you a playlist tonight."
Wanda smiled, almost touched by how seemingly genuine Vision's intentions seemed to be. "I'll listen to anything, really. But in terms of a workout? It needs to be upbeat and get me moving."
"So for workout purposes, would it be safe to assume you prefer something like EDM remixes, where the beats per minute almost always fall in time with movement?" Vision asked, finishing off his bowl of paprikash.
"I'd say that's a fair assessment," Wanda nodded. "Dance music almost always gets the blood flowing."
"Perfect, then we'll start there." Vision said, standing up just as Wanda finished her food. "Can I take your bowl for you?"
Wanda handed him her empty bowl and settled back into the chaise, another smile sneaking up on her as Vision disappeared into the kitchen to take care of the dishes. She took a minute to look around his apartment. Behind her was a simple dining room, with a black dining set, shining like it'd just been dusted. Next to it was the bedroom, the room was dark but she could just make out the dark colored sheets on an impeccably made bed but couldn't see anything else.
The room next to it seemed to be a home office or studio of some kind and is where Vision disappeared to after finishing the dishes. He came back out a few minutes later with a Macbook and a Bluetooth speaker in his hands.
"Alright," he started, this time sitting on the couch and setting the computer down between him and Wanda while the speaker went on the coffee table.
"So I figured we'd start by going through some other workout playlists to see if anything jumps out at you," Vision explained, pulling up Spotify on his computer. "You're okay with listening to music with me?"
"Of course." She nodded eagerly, almost too eager. She slowed her movements and kept her nod in check. "That's what I'm here for."
Vision smiled and started typing.
"Let's try this Workout Remixes playlist first," he said, clicking on the shuffle button as the first song started to play. Wanda listened and immediately heard Sam Smith's voice.
"What's this one?" Wanda asked. "I like it."
"It's called Promises. Looks like it's by Calvin Harris and features Sam Smith," Vision read. "Want me to add it?"
"Yes," Wanda said. "Please."
"There," Vision said, clicking along on his trackpad. "You've got the first song on your new playlist."
They spent the next hour listening to bits of songs and adding the ones Wanda liked to the playlist, dancing and laughing as the beats filled their chests. Any fear about Vision's true intentions abandoned long ago.
"Would you mind if I took a look at your current playlist?" Vision asked. "I can probably recommend a few songs for you based on that."
Wanda nodded and pulled up her playlist, handing her phone over to Vision who looked at it closely and intently. He was really into this.
"You were listening to Bassnectar earlier?" he asked. "It's still paused, that's why I ask. Do you like them?"
"Yeah, they're not bad," Wanda said. "They have some good songs."
"Have you heard Breathless? If not, I highly recommend it."
"Put it on," Wanda said, waiting to hear the music begin. As the beat filled the air she suddenly noticed how close they moved next to each other throughout the last hour. The computer was now on the coffee table with the speaker and Wanda sat cross legged on the chaise, mere inches from Vision who sat with one leg firmly planted under him.
I'm still restless... Leave me breathless...
"What do you think?"
Wanda nodded her approval and continued to listen to the lyrics, a haunting reverberating voice pumped out of Vision's speaker and seemed to stir something deep inside of her.
In all my dreams I'm still restless Why do you always leave me breathless
They were face to face, looking at each other, the space between them closed long ago. She looked closely at Vision, his blue eyes seemed to be searching her face for an invitation to her lips. Silently and lightly, she nodded, letting Vision know it was ok to kiss her and he moved in quickly, pressing a quick and almost chaste kiss to her lips.
"I hope there's more than that," Wanda breathed, shocked at her sudden boldness, but it was the truth. There was more brewing between them than a quick peck on the lips. "I mean-"
She was cut off by Vision's lips on hers again, this time lingering in feather light kisses that then trailed across her cheek. His hands moved to cup her face and pull her closer and she let him, scooting closer until their legs were interlocked and they were almost tangled in each other.
Vision inched his nose across Wanda's cheek, pressing another delicate kiss where the tip of his nose had been.
"I don't want you to think this is the only reason I invited you here," Vision whispered, dropping another kiss to Wanda's waiting lips.
"I wouldn't mind if you did," Wanda said earnestly, accepting yet another kiss from Vision. "I've had my eyes on you for weeks."
"I know," Vision sighed, finally pressing his lips firmly to Wanda's and she eagerly opened her mouth to let Vision's tongue inside. He kissed her deeply, thoroughly, exploring her mouth and letting Wanda explore his and soon, they'd completely forgotten about the playlist, letting the Bassnectar song end and another begin.
This beat was just as haunting, a deep echoing hum and a song of craving someone. Wanda felt the hum in her chest and pulled Vision down on top of her. She allowed his body to slip between her legs as his hips instinctively rolled, a light moan escaping his lips in response to the movement. Wanda felt the bulge at the front of Vision's pants pressing against her panties, teasing her middle. She lifted her hips, searching for his erection, desperate for more contact.
They spent many minutes pressed together, Vision grinding his hips against Wanda's middle while both stayed fully clothed. It didn't seem to be going any further than that, and Wanda didn't mind. She liked the teasing, the build of pressure and wetness at her front staying present as Vision moved off of her and took her in his arms, dropping light kisses against her neck and down her collarbone.
"I hope this is okay," Vision said between kisses. "Lying here with me."
"More than okay," Wanda whispered. She ran her fingers through his hair, guiding his head down to kiss her where she wanted him to, right at the curve of her neck and shoulder. His kisses were warm and inviting, leaving trails of heat and wetness in their wake. If she was being honest with herself, she didn't ever want him to stop.
Life is funny, she thought. Earlier today I was staring at him, only wondering what he might sound like, how he might hold me. Now I'm in his arms, accepting his kisses and feeling all of him.
Wanda was snapped out of her reverie when Vision suddenly pulled away, turning to his computer and typing something in. A new song started, one that felt like it was picked just for her.
We stayed up all night Talking to each other, whispers under covers
Vision returned to the chaise, pulling Wanda close again, pressing his forehead to hers and speaking in a low, rumbling voice.
"I'm not normally this forward," he admitted, kissing the tip of her nose. "But there's something about you that I feel deep in my veins."
Wanda wouldn't say out loud that she felt it too. A buzz when she looked at him. Some kind of deep connection that she couldn't pinpoint but enjoyed nonetheless. Like they'd been here before. Together, again and again.
She pulled herself closer, nuzzling her head into his neck, pressing her own kisses to the pulse point that was frantically pumping.
"Calm down," she said soothingly. "I'm here. You have me."
It's the last thing she remembered before sleep pulled her under. She woke hours later, music still playing, the room fully dark and Vision curled up asleep next to her on the chaise. They could have easily gone to the bedroom, but it didn't feel right yet. It held implications of things neither of them were ready to admit just yet, so they stayed on the couch, tangled in each other and keeping one another warm.
Vision opened one eye, squinting as though he were making sure Wanda was still there.
"Hi," he said, his voice full of sleep.
"Hi," Wanda returned. "Sleep well?"
"Better than I have in a long time," Vision admitted. "Sorry I fell asleep on you."
"Well if we're being honest, I fell asleep on you, too," Wanda smiled. "And I'm not sorry that I did."
They both laughed, Vision's hand reaching out to run the tips of his fingers down Wanda's cheek. Blue eyes locked on Wanda's"
"When can I see you again?" he finally asked.
"I'll be at the gym tomorrow around five," Wanda said, propping herself up on her elbow. "Can you make it there then? Maybe we can grab dinner afterward?"
Vision nodded. "I'll be there." He pressed a sneaky kiss to her lips. "We'll work out together, too."
"Sounds like a date," Wanda said, returning Vision's kiss.
A date? Wanda thought. Why did I just say that?
Luckily, Vision chuckled and said, "It's a date."

A recommendation for you writer-types out there, because I really like it and you may too: Gingko App
What it is: A web-based, powerful-yet-minimalist outlining / word processing app.
You should check it out if: You like the idea of Scrivener, but you want something more pared down and easier to jump into, or you want to have access to your writing projects any time, anywhere you have an internet connection.
I know that Scrivener works really well for a lot of people, but every time I try to use it I get caught up by one of three things:
1) It’s got enough of a learning curve that I don’t feel like I’m using it very effectively, but I have absolutely zero desire to read a user manual or watch hours of how-to videos just so I can be a giant nerd in my spare time when options exist that don’t require that of me.
2) In Scrivener, there are “right” places to put certain things (kinds of information), which sends me so far down an organization / classification rabbit hole that I never get to the point of actually writing anything.
3) It’s just… really ugly on Windows, and I do not enjoy spending that amount of time looking at something so visually unappealing.
Enter gingko. I hope it exists forever, because now that I’ve found it I never want to go back to anything else. Why? Well, here are the features I like:
It’s browser-based, so it plays nicely with my chromebook and I can access my docs anywhere. I use it mostly to be a giant nerd, but I’ve also got trees on the go for work planning that I can access from home or work.
Since it’s online, linking research, etc. is simple and natural.
I really like the structure. It’s essentially a hierarchical organizer on steroids, but the card tree metaphor works really well with how I think / brainstorm / process information (idea -> sketch -> fleshed out -> finished work), and it’s quite easy to rearrange the “cards” when I inevitably need to restructure my work.
SO MANY KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS. You don’t need to navigate with the mouse at all, really, which is great because I do most of my work on laptops and trackpads are both Not Great and interrupt my typing flow.
But it’s flexible and allows you to approach it however you’d prefer, so if you like using a mouse and don’t want to have to learn / remember hotkeys, you don’t need to use keyboard shortcuts at all.
In fact, it’s actually pretty powerful for such a minimalist program, but for the most part everything’s tucked away out of sight until you want it.
…Including your card trees, when you get down to the actual writing, thanks to fullscreen mode.
Finally, the limits on free accounts are quite reasonable, especially if you’re just a hobbyist. 100 cards a month can go an awfully long way. (But if you end up liking and using it and have a few bucks to spare, please do consider sending them the developer’s way; gingko has a suggested price but is offered on a sliding pay-what-you-can scale, so you can unlock unlimited cards / documents for as little as $2/month.)
Of course, the concern with anything web-based is always, what happens if / when it ceases to exist? Fortunately, gingko has a number of options for exporting your work, so you can make regular backups to make sure nothing gets lost in the event of a shutdown. That said, as with all backup options, it’s up to you to actually use them…
And if you like the program but you really don’t like the cloud, or just want your data stored locally by default, a desktop version exists for your Windows, Mac, or Linux machine. I can’t vouch for its functionality personally, as I only use the web app, but there’s a free trial available so you’ve got nothing to lose in checking it out.

Survey #401
“my love is just waiting to turn your tears to roses”
Do you typically do your makeup the same each time? Or do you like to change it up often? IF I wear makeup, it's essentially always the same. Who is the last person you were in a room with just the two of you? What were you doing? Yesterday with Mom. We were trying to find the best deal on Eco Earth, a substrate we're getting for Venus. What was the last really good book you read, and what was it about? If we're talking REALLY good book, then The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. In short summary, it's a dystopian future novel where women are now basically just objects used only for repopulation, even having their names stripped from them. They follow very strict rules as society has returned to horrible misogyny. As a woman, the "oh my god, this is possible" aspect of it is terrifying, and it causes such a sense of disgust and urge to ensure women rights always continue to be fought for. Do you feel safe in your country? For the most part, I'd say. I guess. There are places I'd feel safer, though. How many meals do you eat a day? Three. Have you ever performed a solo dance in front of a crowd? No, but I was supposed to my senior year in high school; the seniors at my dance studio were always welcome to do a solo in celebration. Mine was a modern dance to "Coma White" by Marilyn Manson, wanting to tell a story about depression and how being medicated could feel, but I eventually decided like halfway through learning the choreography that I was just too nervous to do a solo. Have you ever sung a solo? No. When you go to McDonalds, what drink do you usually get? Coke. Have you ever had to call and complain about a product you bought? No. Do you own a designer purse? Definitely not. I'm not wasting that much money on something like that. What’s the weirdest rumor you’ve ever heard about yourself? Apparently, Jason and I had a baby in high school even though I was obviously never pregnant. To my knowledge, it was started by his ex. Who is now a good friend of mine lmaooo. Life is funny. What was your favorite Saturday morning cartoon growing up? Pokemon, of course. Would you ever have an affair? Nope. Would you ever have a one night stand? Nope. Where you present at any major historical events (e.g. 9/11)? No. What are your opinions on marijuana legalization? Legalize it, but treat it similarly to alcohol in that driving under the influence is illegal and punishable, and I believe you should be of a certain age. How about abortion? I am pro-choice. I was pro-life most of my own life, but now I am very firm about a mother being able to choose if she wants to endure a pregnancy or not. Like, that is a MASSIVE life event that almost inevitably changes - and sometimes traumatizes - people. I do believe a fetus is its own body and not part of the mother's, but rather in the mother's, but the belief that a woman decides what she wants in her body is her choice, too. I'm not very fond of people treating abortion as a simple, regular form of birth control, like it's nothing but an "lol whoops," but I still believe it is ultimately her decision, and she should always be free of judgment for doing what is best for her. Do you wear skirts or dresses more often? Neither. I wouldn't dare wear a skirt more so, though. What do you think about tipping at restaurants? There should always be an expected minimum, imo, unless the person was truly, sincerely, genuinely fucking awful. Waiters do not have an easy job, fight me about it, and they're just trying to survive while putting on a happy, jovial face, all the while dealing with hungry people who can be such assholes. I believe the actual tip should relate to actual service, but again, give them something. Would you ever get back together with any of your exes? One, absolutely. The other would take a shitload of consideration and proper communication on his part. Do you have a preferred coffee brand? No, because I don't like coffee. Do you usually befriend your coworkers, or do you prefer to keep work separate from your personal life? IF I had a job, I'd like to build a friendship with those I have to engage with almost every day. What is something you frequently forget? Dates, ages, names, what I was about to do five seconds before I forgot... Pretty much everything. My memory is frightfully poor. Is there any drama currently going on with your family? No. When you take a nap, do you nap in bed or on the couch? In my bed. Were you raised by both of your parents? If not, then who raised you? Both; my parents split when I was somewhere around 17, though, but I'd say there wasn't much more "raising" to do at that age. Have you ever stolen anything? If so, why? No. Have you ever plagiarized someone else's work? Hell no. What's your most-used mode of transportation? My mom's car. Have you ever taught someone else a useful skill? Not to my recollection. Does seeing everyone else's 'perfect lives' posted on social media ever bring you down or affect how you feel about yourself? It actually does, honestly. Not ALWAYS, but if I'm being honest, it does most of the time. I've contemplated deleting Facebook for that reason, but with is also comes things that make me happy, and I think I'd feel even more isolated without it. What is your favorite Hostess/Little Debbie snack? This is SO impossible for me to answer. I loooove Hostess and Little Debbie treats. I want to say honeybuns, but I also love those chocolate cupcakes with the white swirls on top, as well as Twinkies. Very few exist that I don't like. Do you/your family buy loafs from the bakery or bagged on the shelf? We just buy bagged bread. What’s the best news you’ve gotten lately? My APAP mask is definitively WORKING!!!!! :') Mom got an app that connects to the machine via Bluetooth that monitors the effectiveness of the mask, evaluating many factors of your sleep, and it's detecting a definite decrease in disruptive behaviors or something like that. It is so, SO encouraging to know that. ^And, the worst? Hm. Oh, probably some news on something serious a good friend is going through, but I don't feel it's my right to disclose what. It's just a very worrying and potentially dangerous issue that I wish I could help her with. Would you rather receive (or give) flowers, chocolates or jewelry? I'd appreciate any, but my fat ass is drawn to the chocolate, ha ha. What *I* would give would vary depending on what the person liked. How do you feel about coconut? Smells lovely, but is otherwise gross. ^ Ever cracked one open? No, but omg I've always wanted to, haha. What’s the best thing about being your gender? I guess the fact it's more "normal" and "accepted" to show our emotions. Fuck that generalization, though. I don't give a shit what your gender is, you experiencing emotions is NORMAL and welcomed to be expressed. ^ And the worst thing? The ability to be raped and impregnated by it. Do you do your part to save the earth? I don't do nearly enough. :/ We recycle, but that's about it. Well, none of us DARE to litter either, but I still don't feel like it's as much as the earth deserves from its denizens. Who do you think should have their portrait on a bill? I don't know or care. Why did you last feel exhausted? Yesterday was my niece's birthday, and I spent essentially ALL day playing with her and her brother. I have a very limited battery when it comes to kids, and I was running on empty for hours. My anxiety was SO high and I really needed a break from them, but they're too young to really understand that Aunt Britt can only socially run for so long before I'm completely burnt out, and TRUST ME, I was there for sure. I didn't want them to think they did something wrong, you know? I just had to keep going. I slept like a baby last night though for sure, haha. Have you ever used emotional blackmail to get your own way? Wow, no. Has anybody ever used emotional blackmail on you? No. Who did you last worry about and why? Sara for health reasons. Are you currently looking for a new place to live? Not actively, but Mom and I definitely want to move. We feel very out-of-place here in the suburbs. Which would you prefer as a view; mountains or the sea? Mountains. Do you have a mouse for your laptop? (Assuming you have a laptop) Yes. I canNOT play games with a trackpad. Do you apologize a lot? Extremely excessively. When you get married what do you think you’ll put most of your focus and money into? Do you mean like, for the wedding? In that case, probably the venue. Being a photography buff, I want a place I think is really pretty to have pictures taken. What’s something you complain about frequently? My legs hurting, my weight, and being hot. Do you have anything planned for the summer? Nope, and that's fine with me. I'd rather stay inside away from the heat. Who usually makes dinner in your household? My ma. Do you have a blog? Just on Tumblr. Does anyone in your family snore loudly? My mother does because of gerd, and at least when my father still lived with us, he snored super loud, too. Do you want to fix anything with anyone? Yeah, a few people. What shows do you watch? Right now, only Meerkat Manor: Rise of the Dynasty. Whenever The Edge of Sleep comes out, I will 110% be watching that, too, because Mark is a key actor in it. :') Plus the concept seems super cool. Have you ever broken someone’s heart? I don't know. Who was the last person you had a conversation with on the phone? Me mum. Does the song you’re currently listening to remind you of anyone specific? No, given it has like... one lyric, haha. Do you own any TV show soundtracks? No. Last thing you did that made you feel like an adult? I mean I guess sign myself in at the doctor's. What’s your favorite picture of your mom? Dad? Oh my god, there's a candid one I got of Mom laughing when she was posing as my subject for a photography assignment, and I cherish it with ALL my heart. I want to share it with essentially the whole world, but yeah, I'm not gonna put my mom's picture here. As for my dad, I like this one I took of us at Red Lobster for his birthday a year or two back. Last TV show series you finished? Fullmetal Alchemist with Sara. Favorite flavor of cream cheese? Regular. What US state would you like to visit? Alaska. Last meal you made yourself? I put a chicken pesto thing in the microwave earlier for dinner.

I Want It, I Got It: Chapter 11
Summary: Phil Lester was a worker for the BBC in London. Working in the advertising department, he was content being alongside his friend and fellow coworker PJ during every shift. However, the BBC is temporarily being used as a film set for a new movie staring Hollywood ‘It’ star, Daniel Howell. Being stuck as an extra on the set, Phil finds it’s hard to ignore the famous star. And maybe, just maybe, Dan finds it hard to ignore Phil as well.
Word Count: 2.2k (this chapter)
Warnings: Occasional swearing and mentions of sex
Rating: Mature (for right now)
Updates will be every Wednesday at 4pm and Sunday at 1pm EST
**MASTERLIST | READ ON AO3**
For Phil, clicking publish on his video was, undoubtedly, one of the hardest things he has had to do in a long time. He spent the evening editing the video with Dan watching from the sidelines to get a better look at what editing was really like. And when he was done, he processed it to his YouTube page and waited to publish it.
But now it was ready, he felt his chest tighten. This was a big deal. This was a big deal because this video was the first one he posted in…6 years? Had it really been that long?
He was nervous for the comeback.
He was nervous for the comments, the tweets and for everything else that is going to come out when everyone sees Dan in the thumbnail. He was nervous for the queued tweet that he has ready to go saying “NOT CLICKBAIT. NEW VIDEO FEATURING DANIEL HOWELL”.
“I’m not sure about this.”
Dan looked at where Phil’s finger was poised over the trackpad. “Not sure about what?”
“About posting the video.” Phil said, his hand now beginning to shake slightly.
He turned his head and looked at Dan, trying to ignore that he saw a little bit of disappointment behind his eyes. “You don’t have to post it if you don’t want to.”
“I…I know.” Phil said, his voice quivering. “I think I’m just nervous.”
Phil looked back at the screen and watched his mouse hover over the button. He shouldn’t be this nervous. Maybe if it was just a video of himself, he wouldn’t be. But surely just knowing Dan was in the video shouldn’t be the only reason why he’s nervous?
He pressed his fingers down and the video went live.
He felt all air escape his lungs and looked over at Dan was smiling. “Send me the link and I’ll post it on my Twitter.”
Phil quickly copied the link with shaking hands and then sent it to Dan. As soon as Dan tweeted out the link, Phil shut his laptop down and took a few stuttering breaths. He needed to relax and to calm down. There was no point in getting worked up over something that he couldn’t really change anymore…well, he could. But hypothetically he couldn’t.
He tweeted out the same tweet he had queued in his drafts and then he retweeted Dan’s tweet and then sat back, staring at his phone. He shouldn’t have been surprised at how his name was trending. Nor should he have been surprised at the amount of follow requests he received as well.
He accepted none of them and closed the app, turning off his notifications for Twitter so he wouldn’t have to see them.
“I have to fly back to LA tomorrow morning.” Dan says, out of the blue, as they remained sat on Phil’s couch. “Filming begins again tomorrow night. I have to catch a plane at half past 6 tomorrow morning.”
Phil couldn’t help but feel the pang in his chest from Dan’s words. “So soon?” He found himself asking.
Dan let out a sigh. “Unfortunately.” He paused. “Tomorrow I get to film a sex scene.”
Phil quickly turned his head. “A sex scene?”
Dan nodded. “Yes, with Mimei.”
“That sounds…awkward?” Phil asked, finding himself chuckle.
“Oh it’s going to be incredibly awkward.” Dan said with a loud laugh. “Not only is it a sex scene which like, don’t get me wrong, I love having sex, but not staged sex? And even though this is obviously not sex and we’ll not be actually fornicating, the thought that I have to go through the motions completely staged is a little bit repulsing.”
“I don’t think I could do it.” Phil answered truthfully. “I’m awkward enough about life in general. I can’t imagine having to fake have sex with a person while being filmed.”
“I’ve done it before.” Dan says, his eyes staring straight ahead. “It was for an Indie Movie that I did prior to me becoming famous. It was with my ex-boyfriend.”
Dan swallowed and then continued. “It wasn’t bad? But that could have also been because we were used to having sex anyway so staging it wasn’t quite that hard to do.”
“I don’t think I could ever do it.” Phil repeats.
“I think it would be less awkward for me if it wasn’t with a Mimei.” Dan says. “Like, if it was with a guy, I think I’d be better off.”
Phil was a little bit taken back by the openness of this conversation he was having with Dan. He wasn’t expecting for Dan to openly be speaking to sex about him. It was a little bit dizzying given all of the circumstances of today.
“Oh same.” Phil found himself choking out.
“Oh?” Dan says, a smile playing on his lips.
“I just prefer to have sex with guys.”
Phil felt like he was choking on his own air. He was having trouble registering in his mind that he had just come out to Dan. Not directly, but he still kind of did. And it was a big deal. It was a massive deal, actually. Because up until him telling this to Dan, his family and PJ and Sophie were the only ones who knew about his sexuality.
“You probably already knew about me.” Dan says. “And my preference over who I like.”
Phil feels slightly embarrassed and ashamed. He had read about it on Wikipedia, that sensitive information not even hidden from the public, but plastered onto this website with millions of visitors a day.
“I’m sorry that you don’t get to have privacy anymore.”
Dan shrugs. It’s a genuine shrug, not one that is just blowing off what Phil had said. “At least my sex tape hasn’t been released.”
Phil’s eyes bug out of his head and Dan’s lets out a loud laugh.
“I’m kidding mate. I don’t have a sex tape…or at least I don’t think I do.”
***
To say the video went viral was an understatement by far. Within just the first ten hours, the video already had 3 million views and was growing by the second. News sites were writing stories about the video and about Dan being in it, of course Phil was mentioned as well but a lot more sparingly.
Phil could see now what it felt like to have people saying your name in every news story or in every twitter mention. He couldn’t even keep up with all of the people requesting to follow him so, unwillingly, he unprivated his Twitter and let the follows happen. He went from just under 30k followers to almost 100k in the first three hours. By the next morning, he had nearly 350k followers, all of which were from Dan.
It was overwhelming. He was overwhelmed.
Dan knew that though. Which is why Dan suggested they order out from some greasy food place and indulge their feelings in some plastic tasting pizza. Phil never ordered Dominos, but he had to admit that it tasted good on his palette and was definitely a comfort food.
Spike already appreciated having bites of sausage given to him as well as he sat on Phil’s feet.
“So your video went viral.” Dan says, between bites of pizza and whatever dipping sauce he was using. “Not gonna lie, didn’t quite expect that to happen.”
“Me neither.” Phil answered honestly. “My channel is growing and my Twitter is as well. I’m scared to go into the comments.”
“How did you learn to edit?”
The fast change in topic gave Phil a little bit of whiplash but he recovered fast. He rather enjoyed being able to answer questions about how he learned to do YouTube or how he learned his video editing skills, even if they are a bit rusty.
“I got a masters degree is video editing and post production from the University of York.” He says. “I never really used it unless I was doing videos. I wanted to be a director for a little while, but I knew it wasn’t a realistic dream so that’s why I did YouTube. But I got hired at the BBC by pure luck and I haven’t really gotten a chance to use those skills.”
“That’s really cool actually.” Dan says, setting down his slice of pizza back onto his plate. “I’ve never been allowed in the editing room of a movie, not even when I did Indie Films in high school. But I’ve always wanted to know what the process was like. Like being able to chose the frames you want or the takes you want. Sometimes when I attend my movie premieres and I watch the films, I get mad that the editor chose to use my bad takes or my bad sides and I wish I had a bit more control over it.”
“You don’t have a bad side.”
When Phil caught wind of the words leaving his mouth, he looked up from his own plate, and stared at Dan. His cheeks were flushed red and he was holding his lips in a thin line, almost to keep himself from smiling. Phil wished he would give in and just smile.
“That’s not true.”
“No it is true.” Phil continues, his mouth just moving without his control over what was being said. “It is true because…”
He’s destined to never finish that sentence because Dan’s phone begins to ring loudly on the counter, interrupting them with the shrill sound of the default phone ring.
Dan grabs his phone and answers it, abruptly leaving his pizza behind to cool on the plate.
Phil lets out a loud sigh and looks down at Spike who is whimpering for another table scrap at his feet. He just nods and picks off a piece of pepperoni and hands it to Spike with a sad chuckle.
“I’d like to think you’re whimpering at the secondhand embarrassment but I know you just want more food.” Phil whispers, scratching behind Spikes ear. “To be fair, I didn’t even know what I was going to say anyway. This was probably for the best.”
Phil remained sitting in the kitchen while he heard the telltale footsteps of Dan pacing back and forth somewhere down the short hallway towards the bathroom. He couldn’t make out anything Dan was saying, but he actually didn’t want to. It always felt like a weird breach of privacy to listen to someone else’s phone conversation.
When Dan returns, his face is flustered and his shoulders are tense. He slides back into his sit and picks at his pizza slice haphazardly with his fingers. “Marianne, my manager, just called. She said doing the video was a bad PR move. I don’t see how but she’s really mad.”
Phil felt his heart fall out his chest. He knew that he shouldn’t have posted the video. He knew it!
“I’m sorry. I knew we shouldn’t have posted it.”
Dan shook his head. “No, I’m not mad that we posted it. I’m just…I want to do things that I want to do. I wanted to do the video with you. I wanted to be a part of it. I don’t understand how it’s a bad PR move but whatever.”
Phil could sense the frustration in Dan’s voice and when he looked at Dan, he could see the beginnings of unshed tears glazing his eyes. Dan sniffled, confirming Phil’s thoughts, and as soon as the first tear made way down Dan’s cheek, Phil immediately thrusted a bunch of napkins to him to help.
Dan wiped his eyes and refused to make eye-contact with Phil. Phil felt his heart clench every time Dan sniffled and wiped at his eyes. He watched as the tears slowly stopped and all that was left was Dan’s bloodshot eyes in their wake.
“I’m sorry.” Dan apologizes. “I just get really overwhelmed.”
“You have every right to be upset, Dan.” Phil says. His hand reaches out and suddenly, it’s laying on top of Dan’s arm, his fingers laying into the fuzzy fabric of his sweater. “You should be able to do what you want to do.”
“It’s pretty ironic.” Dan says with a laugh. “Just this morning, I was giving you the same talk and now you’re sitting here and giving me it.”
Phil did have to admit it was pretty ironic, but that didn’t make the situation any less complicated or hurtful for either one of them.
“I think I need some time to myself.” Dan said, suddenly standing up. “Do you mind if I…”
“You can lay down in my bedroom if you’d like.” Phil said, letting his hand fall from Dan’s arm to the counter. “I don’t mind.”
“I think I just need a few hours away from social media and from my managers constant nagging and calling. I’m sorry for being such a shit guest.”
“It’s okay.”
And it really was okay. Phil didn’t mind that Dan needed some alone time, he did as well. He needed time to process what had happened. He watched Dan’s back as he retreated to be alone and Phil remained sat down, the pizza now cold on the counter.
Today had been unlike any other day Phil had ever had before in his life.

Macbook Pro Software Update Not Working
Tumblr media
System cleanup in one click
Tumblr media
Which audio driver is used by MacBook Pro 7.1??? I'm running BootCamp (Windows7 Ultimate x64) and I'm having a problem with audio input, so I'm looking for anything taht will make it work. In Device Manager I had 'Cirrus CS4206A (AB13)' and three devices of 'NVIDIA High Definition Audio'.
Make your Mac fast and secure with CleanMyMac X.
The trackpad is a vital component for any desktop. It allows you to interact with the graphical user interface in ways keyboard shortcuts simply don’t allow.
With a trackpad not working Mac and PC devices may feel downright useless. As we’ve become accustomed to interacting with our computers using a trackpad or mouse, a Mac trackpad not clicking or responding to gestures is troubling.
But don’t worry, if your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air keyboard is not working, as you’ve arrived at the right place, get some of the best possible solutions here. Why Is MacBook Keyboard Not Working? Macs are usually smooth-running machines. However, software and hardware related issues can arrive during use. The documentation indicated that the update: 'Fixes a stability issue that could occur during heavy CPU load on 16in MacBook Pro (2019 and 2020) and 13in MacBook Pro (2020)'. Hopefully we won't. The 16-inch MacBook Pro brings a whole new class of performance to the notebook. Thanks to a more advanced thermal design, the Intel Core i9 processor with up to 8 cores and 16 threads of processing power sustains higher performance for longer periods of time — and delivers up to 2.1 times the performance of a quad-core MacBook Pro. Testing conducted by Apple in October 2020 using preproduction 13-inch MacBook Pro systems with Apple M1 chip, as well as production 1.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-based 13-inch MacBook Pro systems with Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645, all configured with 16GB RAM and 2TB SSD. Tested with prerelease Shapr3D 3.45.0 using a 288.2MB model.
We’ll discuss how MacBook trackpad problems can be solved, what to do when your trackpad fails, how to fix trackpad on MacBook, and the apps that keep any Mac running smooth so you can avoid issues with your trackpad in the future.
Why isn’t my trackpad working?
If a MacBook Pro trackpad not working is ruining your day, there could be a simple fix. First, let’s explore why your trackpad may be spontaneously unresponsive.
If the MacBook trackpad not working is an issue for you, the easiest fix is to plug in an external trackpad or mouse to your Mac.
The first thing to do is check if your version of macOS needs an update. To do so, click the Apple logo in the Mac’s menu bar, select ‘about this Mac,’ then ‘software update.’ If the Mac you’re using has new firmware available, download it.
The reasons for a MacBook trackpad not clicking are varied. It could be the macOS version it’s running, or an app that’s causing issues behind the scenes. It may even be that your system is overworked, and the trackpad is unable to keep up with your clicks and commands.
Finally, your settings may be to blame, especially if an app changed them without notifying you.
How to fix trackpad on your MacBook
There are six key ways to diagnose and fix an unresponsive trackpad on your Mac. Keep in mind an external mouse or trackpad plugged into a Mac is the simplest way to navigate these issues, as a plugged-in peripheral device has no connectivity issues.
Check system preferences
The aforementioned steps for updating Mac also apply, but you can do the same in system preferences. Here’s how:
Select the Apple logo at the top left corner of the Mac menu bar
Select “System Preferences”
Select “Software Update”
If prompted, download and update your version of macOS or OS X
Disable force click
The trackpad on your MacBook has two main interactivity types: force click, and tap to click. The difference between the two is how firmly you need to press your trackpad to get a response. Tapping allows you to simply tap the trackpad to select items, while force clicking demands you press firmly enough on your trackpad to hear (and feel) a click.
Macbook Pro Software Update Not Working Windows 8.1
If you’re tapping and not clicking, it may be the cause of your issues. Here’s how to toggle the setting:
Select the Apple logo at the top left corner of the Mac menu bar
Select “System Preferences”
Select “Trackpad”
Under the “Point & Click” heading, toggle the “Force Click and haptic feedback” off
In this heading, you can also tweak how forcefully you need to tap or click your trackpad to elicit a response. Simply select the “Click” slider, and change the setting to suit your needs.
Reset trackpad
A MacBook pro trackpad reset is not as daunting as it seems. All you’re really doing is toggling your MacBook’s trackpad back to the factory settings in System Preferences.
Most of us altered the settings of our trackpad to better suit our individual needs, and it may have caused issues in the background that causes a trackpad to become unresponsive. To toggle settings back to their original positions, follow the first three steps above to get into the “Trackpad” section in System Preferences.
Make sure “Tap to click” is unselected. In the “Scroll & Zoom” header, ensure “Scroll direction: Natural” is selected. These two setting should return your trackpad to its default state.
Reset NVRAM or PRAM
A lot of niggling issues can be solved with a simple NVRAM or PRAM reset. It’s a simple fix you can do any time, too. Here’s how:
Shut down the MacBook completely
Wait 30-60 seconds
Open MacBook and press the power button
Once the MacBook screen illuminates, immediately press and hold the option, command, P, and R keys
Hold the keys down for 20 seconds, or until you hear a startup sound
Release the keys and let your MacBook boot up normally
Reset the SMC
The SMC reset protocol depends on which MacBook you have. For those MacBooks introduced in 2017 or earlier, follow these steps:
Power down MacBook completely
With the MacBook off, press and hold the shift, control, and option keys
While holding those keys, press and hold the power button
Hold all four keys for ten seconds, then release
Press the power button to boot the MacBook
For MacBooks 2018 or later (with a T2 security chip) follow these steps:
Shut down your MacBook, and make sure it’s unplugged from any power supply
Wait 15 seconds, and plug the MacBook in
Wait five seconds, then power MacBook on by pressing the power button
Run Apple diagnostics
Your MacBook can run a simple diagnostics check from startup. Here’s how it’s done:
Disconnect the MacBook from all external devices except a power supply (if necessary)
Shut down your Mac completely
Power the Mac back on while holding down the D key
When you see a screen asking your language preference, release the D key and select your preferred language
Allow the diagnostics to complete its check
All of these diagnostic and repair steps may be avoidable, too. If you have CleanMyMac X on your MacBook, a routine checkup performed on a schedule of your choosing can help keep any Mac running in peak condition and your settings appropriately stable.
CleanMyMac X’s Smart Scan feature quickly checks the Mac for unnecessary files, privacy issues, and ensures its optimized for speed. There are also unique modules for speed optimization and privacy checks, which perform a deeper scan of a MacBook. CleanMyMac X is also the best way to update and remove apps from your MacBook, helping you feel confident the apps you love aren’t surreptitiously disabling your trackpad.
Bonus tips for your Mac
Repairing and maintaining a Mac is always important, but so is diagnosing it. iStat Menus helps you know exactly what’s going on with your Mac in real time, and lives in the background to keep you focused.
iStat Menus only appears in the Mac’s menu bar, with rich icons that provide a glimpse into your Mac’s performance. If you’re curious about what a Mac is doing, simply click the iStat Menus icon to bring up a full menu of the Mac’s CPU, memory, disk, network, and sensors.
Hovering over any of those categories brings up a sub menu with even more detail – and hovering over sections in the sub menu will surface a chart detailing Mac’s performance statistics in real time. There’s simply no better way to know what a Mac is doing behind the scenes than iStat Menus.
After you’ve diagnosed your MacBook with iStat Menus and maintained it with CleanMyMac X, your next step is backing your system up. That’s where Get Backup Pro comes into play!
Get Backup Pro allows you full control over what you backup, and when. You have the ability to run routine, scheduled backups of particular folders, or your entire system. It’s great for those who want to keep daily backups of their documents or photos, but only want to backup an entire system on occasion.
Get Backup Pro even provides the ability to create bootable backups of your entire system; it’s the perfect app for creating clean, thin, bootable backups in the event you need to restart from scratch.
A wonky trackpad is never fun to deal with, but it can be avoided. Often, trackpad woes are little more than an overtaxed system that can’t respond in time to your trackpad clicks and gestures. iStat Menus helps you understand if that’s the case.
CleanMyMac X allows you to keep Mac running smooth better than anything else, even Apple’s own built-in tools. And when you’re confident your Mac is in peak condition, creating a backup is always a smart idea.
All three of these wonderful apps are available for free during a seven day trial of Setapp, a robust suite of productivity apps for Mac.
In addition to these three apps, you’ll gain immediate and unlimited access to the entire catalog of nearly 200 other impressive apps for any Mac in Setapp. When your free trial is over, retaining unlimited access to all of those amazing apps is only $9.99 per month, so why wait? Windows On Mac :: Installed Parallels Desktop Coherence - Taskbar Keeps Disappearing
Sep 21, 2010
OK, so in July I returned to Apple with the purchase of the MacBook (modified bliss on that front) and I have now splurged the extra bucks for the new Wireless Mighty Mouse. Learn how to change the double-click and scrolling speed of your Apple Magic Mouse, Apple Magic Trackpad, or the built-in trackpad on your Mac. In Apple Support Communities. See all questions on this article See all questions I have asked Apple. Adjust double-click and scrolling speed of your mouse or trackpad. More ways to. Home Forums > Parallels Desktop for Mac > Windows Guest OS Discussion > HELP, having issues with mouse/pointer in AutoCAD running in parallels Discussion in ' Windows Guest OS Discussion ' started by Evan_T21, Sep 20, 2013. I know this isn't really related to what this forum does, but I don't know where else to look for help. I bought a new computer (HP notebook G62) and the mouse is off by 1/4 inch. If this has already been posted, I appologize. I did search this forum first. It seems that my Parallels always is 'losing' the mouse. It is specifically bad within Internet Explorer but happens in other windows within Parallels as well. How can I calibrate a joystick on a Mac? Ask Question. How can I emulate keyboard and mouse commands with a game controller? How do I calibrate a Gamecube controller? How to charge my PS3 SixAxis controller? Can't calibrate generic usb gamepad right thumb.
Yesterday, I have downloaded Parallels Desktop to my Macbook Pro, and my brother brought a CD of Windows 7 to install there. At first, in the coherence mode, the taskbar was working amazingly until I turned off my computer. When I turned it back on, Windows 7 started to run, and the taskbar started to disappear and reappear after awhile. Then I restarted Parallels, then the taskbar completely disappeared. I have tried to modify its settings, and it still didn't work. So, I changed the coherence mode to window one, the taskbar was there. And then I changed it back to coherence, it disappeared again. What should I do to get it back in the coherence mode?
Windows On Mac :: Mouse In Parallels With Two Cursors
May 8, 2007
I've never used Parallels, but my girlfriend has it on her iMac. I installed Theme Hospital for her but when you try to play it the mouse goes absolutely crazy, flying from edge to edge. When I put Parallels in a window I could see what was happening. There were two cursors on screen; the Theme Hospital one and another one. Whenever the other (normal XP style) one hit and edge of the window the Theme Hospital one would jump to there, and then they'd swap around a bit when I moved it back. Also, is there an easier way to put Parallels in a window? The only way I know so far is to drop the resolution from standard in XP, then press cmd+Q and cancel.
Hardware :: Mighty Mouse Pointer Stopped Responding / Green Light On Bottom Of Mouse Flashing
May 1, 2009
I know that the general consensus here is that the Mighty Mouse is a piece of shit. That notwithstanding, I'd appreciate posters refraining from engaging in further elaborations on that concept when replying to this topic (i.e., no comments like 'Buy a new mouse,' please). At any rate, I purchased a wireless Mighty Mouse about a month ago and was very happy with it until the batteries apparently died. One day the pointer simply stopped responding and the green light on the bottom of the mouse was flashing. I replaced the batteries and the mouse resumed normal operation. Then, a few days later it happened again. I have yet to re-replace the batteries and have reverted to using my now eight-year-old Logitech dual-optical mouse (possibly the finest peripheral I have ever owned). Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is this mouse having internal hardware or software issues or is it normal for it to devour batteries at this rate? System Preferences says that Bluetooth is maintaining the connection properly, so I am ruling that out as an issue. I would just say to hell with it, and use my Logitech mouse full-time, but my wife hates it and I payed seventy goddamn dollars for the Apple product.
Windows On Mac :: Wireless Keyboard & Mouse Recommendation For OS X - Parallels - Bootcamp?
Nov 19, 2009
I am looking for a wireless keyboard/mouse to replace my current USB wired to fulfill the following requirements: 1) Must Work with OS X, Bootcamp and Parallels. 2) Work with Windows XP (currently) and Windows 7 in future. 3) Whatever wireless technology, I only want ONE receiver for both KB and mouse. 4) bluetooth or NANO or other 5) Keyboard MUST be high contrast (example-black keys/white letters). This precludes current Apple keyboard. 6) Would like NOT to mix and match brands.
IMac :: Mouse Pointer Moves By Itself?
Mac Cursor
Aug 26, 2008
I just got my iMac, and I have a problem with mighty mouse. Sometimes, when I move the mouse just a little, the pointer will 'jump' to one side of the screen... it's very frustrating. Is it due because my mousepad has different colours on it ? That's my only explanation. Maybe the mousepad different colours cause reflection on the pointer that make it jump all over the screen...
MacBook Pro :: How To Use Black Mouse Pointer
Jun 30, 2009
The story behind it - I used it a bit at home, connected to the AC adapter, then closed it and put it in a laptop bag (quite tight on both sides - like a sleeve [you have to slide the computer out - it doesn't open]). Then it was in the bag for 10-15minutes, I took it out, opened it up and this came up! (while it was like this, I could see the black mouse pointer and move it about just fine) I did a hard restart, and then everything was fine.
OS X :: Icons Get Stuck To Mouse Pointer
Jul 18, 2010
Sometimes, if I click an icon (usually on my desktop) it'll just 'stick' to the mouse pointer, it'll appear as if I am still clicking and holding the icon, and it drags around. I also can't trash, drop or do anything with it. Other programs on the computer can't be used either because it's still using that icon. I'm forced to use keyboard commands to restart Finder or press the 'esc' key, which works until I click any other icon again. This happens with text and pictures also.
Mac Mini :: How To Change Mouse Pointer
Apr 22, 2012
I would like enlarge or change the color of the mouse pointer. Info: Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7.3)
OS X :: Icons Stick To Mouse Pointer But Won't Drop
Apr 23, 2010
Somehow I can't drag and drop files/programs/icons any more. Not on my desktop, not within my dock. When I click on an icon to drag, it will stick to my mouse pointer, but only as a ghost. When I try to release it, it won't drop to the designated area or folder. The icon just keeps sticking to my mouse pointer, where ever I take it. Only after using esc and clicking. I using Mac OS X 10.6.2 iMac iMac8,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 3,06 GHz
Hardware :: Mouse Pointer Freezing - Need To Unplug
Feb 7, 2010
I have a IMac G4 mod. Power mac4,2 operating system osx version 10.411 processor 800 MHz 768 MB SDRAM. Every now and then my mouse pointer freezers up and I have to unplug the mouse and it starts working again. If it does not unfreeze I have to restart. Then I am back in business. Some times the whole screen goes gray with a black square-telling me to shut down and restart.
Mac Pro :: Won't Work / Mouse Pointer Screen Freeze
Jun 14, 2008
I have just installed a new Mac Pro. Everything works except I get occasional mouse pointer freezes. They last for about 1 second each time and seem to occur randomly, on average with 1-2 min intervals. The only things I have installed on top of OS X so far driver wise is MouseWorks to power my Kensington trackball. I use my older large full-keyed white Pro keyboard and only use the smaller wireless one remotely. I have tried deactivating Bluetooth but the mouse freezes still persist.
IMac :: Mouse Pointer Out Of Control - Not Allow Clicks
Apr 27, 2009
Today I was working with my iMac without any problem, suddenly the mouse pointer start behaving very odd, when I tried to click an icon, menu or whatever the mouse start moving not allowing me do the work, I changed the wireless mouse suspecting was a hardware problem but when I connected the USB mouse I got the same problem, then I shutdown the iMac but after starting I got the same problem. I suspect is a trojan virus but I heard that Leopard operating system is very robust and virus is not currently a problem.
OS X Mavericks :: Mouse Pointer Not Always Changing On Mouseover
Sep 6, 2014
I have an issue with my mouse that started a few days ago. My cursor doesn't always change properly when I mouseover certain things. For example, when I hover it above a link, it turns into a pointing hand like it should, when I navigate to the URL bar, it will stay as the hand even after clicking for a short while before changing to what it's supposed to become (the thin bar.) Sometimes it will remain a thin bar when it's supposed to be a black arrow, and so forth. I've tried troubleshooting the issue, but I haven't found much of relevance. One user seemed to be experiencing the same thing albeit only in some pro software I don't use. Mine is system wide. I'm using the trackpad on a 2014 baseline 15' rMBP running Mavericks 10.9.4. Info: MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
MacBook Pro :: Mouse Pointer Missing On The Screen?

I am using macbook pro 15' with latest Maverick OS.Lately, I find that after I log in, the pointer goes missing from the screen and as a result I am unable to click on any icon.I have tried plugging in a USB Mouse, mouse pointer again does not show on the screen. When I force switch off from the power switch, and switch on again I get the pointer. Some times I have to repeat the process.
IMac :: Mouse Pointer Tracking Speed Very Slow
Mar 17, 2009
I just opened my brand new 2009 24inch IMac! The Mouse pointer speed is very very slow. I adjusted the tracking speed to the fastest possible, but this is still under par. I typed my question in google and it directed me to download a program called 'Mouse Zoom' which was downloaded onto my... 'Desktop.' I didn't click the icon to run it because I am afraid of a virus. Is 'Mouse Zoom' safe to click on? Will it fix the problem, or is there an alternative to this issue? I cant imagine something so nice being crippled by something as simple as mouse speed.
MacBook :: Mighty Mouse Pointer No Longer Working?
May 6, 2009
I've been using my M Mouse successfully with my MacBook until recently when the Mouse Pointer no longer moves. The button does engage the dashboard and if I position the cursor using the MacBook trackpad, then the click function of the mouse does work. I have tried changing the batteries. It appears I am having a similar problem when I use a wired mouse. Just in case it's connected, I run Parallels and did recently upgrade Windows software.
Hardware :: Making Mighty Mouse Pointer Use More Precise?
Oct 31, 2009
I just made the switch to Mac. I just got the new macbook pro 15 inch. The only thing is that I bought it mainly for graphic design and I am struggling to use the might mouse. I feel like I have to work so hard just to get the mouse over the icon or tab that I want to select. When I was using a PC the mouse was so much more precise if I wanted to select something or click on something small it was easy. Is there a setting or something to make it easier on the mac using the mighty mouse?
Software :: On Clicking Icons Get Stuck To Mouse Pointer
Jun 24, 2009
Occasionally if I click an icon (usually on my desktop) it'll just 'stick' to my mouse pointer, it'll appear as if I am still clicking and holding the icon, and it drags around. I also can't trash, drop or do anything with it. Other programs on the computer can't be used either because it's still using that icon. I'm forced to use keyboard commands to restart Finder, which works until I click any other icon again.
MacBook Pro :: Remove The Green Circle On Mouse Pointer?

How do I remove the little green circle with a white plus tied to my mouse pointer Info: MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), iOS 5.1
OS X Mavericks :: Bluetooth Mouse Pointer Works But Can't Land Anywhere
Jun 5, 2014
It is happening more and more often: When I start my iMac the mouse pointer is moving normally but when I click on, say, Finder nothing happens, or when I click on the Dock nothing happens. It will not stay or land on any app. It is just hovering and nothing seems to be affected by the mouse pointer. I turn the mouse off and back on and it works fine. So it is an erratic behavior which baffles me. I have read numerous cases in the discussions and all point to a PRAM reset. Will a PRAM reset delete or revert modifications I have made to my iMac, such as disabling the startup sound, via sudo? I don't mind restarting the mouse but it is a hassle Info: iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)
MacBook Pro :: Trackpad Keeps Bouncing The Mouse Pointer When Tap To Select
Sep 4, 2014
had problems with the trackpad - when I tap to select an item the mouse pointer 'bounces' off the item I'm trying to select. It happens randomly - not every time. I migrated all my data and settings from my old Mac Pro (2011 model, also running Mavericks) via Time Machine - could that have an impact? Not using any non-Apple power supplies or other devices. Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)
OS X :: Mouse Pointer Converted Into Black Square After Sleep Mode
Jun 22, 2006
A bizarre thing: when I wake my Cube from sleep, the mouse pointer seems to have converted itself into a black 1' square. As soon as I click in a program it changes back to an arrow.
Software :: Mouse Pointer Freezes When Multiple Applications Are Open
Oct 16, 2008
My mouse continuously freezes when I have to many applications open. I have the mirror door G4. When it freezes I can access the F11 and F12 buttons on the keyboard, but have to restart the computer. I have switched the mouse, but it does not fix it. The more I use the computer the less it happens. It appears to happen more with multiple browser windows open in Safari.
Mac Mini :: Mouse Pointer Disappear And Webpages Drop To Bottom?
How To Open A Mac Mouse For Battery Change
Mar 23, 2012
My mouse pointer disappears when still, if I open a webpage or app store the page drops to the bottom and I cant get back to the top with the mouse. I have tried six different mice (blue tooth and wireless including mac magic mouse) , all the same. Also when the sound is on and the system starts up there is a low buzzing sound until I move the mouse or open something up. Should I just restart the whole os as this is only one week old and I am over it already! Info: Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7.3)
MacBook :: Get The Colorful Circle Thing On The Mouse Pointer Every Time?
Mar 25, 2012
Calibrate Mouse Touchpad
I have a 2008 Aluminum Body MacBook and recently its been working extremely slow. I always get the colorful circle thing on the mouse pointer every time I try to click on anything. I was wondering if anyone had this problem before and what you did to fix this? Or if anyone knew how to fix this problem. Info: MacBook, iOS 5.1
Intel Mac :: How To Stop Scratching Sound When Moving Mouse Pointer

Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac
Virtualization
Show More
When I last reviewed virtualization software in 2008, I found Parallels Desktop 4 for Mac effective, but saddled with a bit of bugginess and lacking some DirectX support. Parallels 5 Desktop for Mac (I tested build 9308) solves both problems, while adding features and improving performance.
Among the most notable of those new features: a much-faster virtualization engine; automatic compression of Windows’ hard disks; a new virtual machine manager; and a new lockdown mode, which requires a password to exit full screen mode, make changes to the virtual machine state, or manage snapshots (perfect for system administrators who don’t want end-users mucking up their machines).
Installation, setup
I tested Parallels Desktop 5 by using it to install Windows XP Pro, Windows 7 Ultimate (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions), and Ubuntu Linux 9.10 on my Mac Pro (2.66GHz quad core with 8GB of RAM, running OS X 10.6.2).
Installing both Windows and Linux is easy in Parallels; it has assistants that automate the process for both. It also installs Parallels Tools, which handles the task of mouse integration between the guest OS and Mac OS, as well as allowing easy guest desktop resizing by resizing the guest OS window.
There are a couple aspects of installing guest OSes that could be improved. First, every time you create a new virtual machine, Parallels creates an alias to that virtual machine on your OS X Desktop. There’s no way to avoid this, so if you find the aliases useless (as I do), you have to manually remove them each time you create a virtual machine.
More troubling is that, when creating a new Windows virtual machine, the default settings are for full integration of the Mac OS and the Windows guest—the default even sets the Windows’ user folder to the Mac’s Users folder. As someone who has personally experienced Windows malware infections, total integration is not something I recommend for most virtual machine users, and yet it’s the default behavior in Parallels.
Parallels also defaults to booting Windows virtual machines in the fully-integrated Coherence mode, where the Windows desktop vanishes, and Windows’ windows are intermingled with those of OS X. For someone expecting a standard Windows interface after installation, this can be disconcerting.
The basics
Like Fusion 3, Parallels 5 now supports Windows Aero in Windows 7, and also includes OpenGL 2.1 acceleration in both XP Pro and Windows 7 (Fusion only supports OpenGL 2.1 in Windows XP Pro). In addition, OpenGL acceleration is included in Linux guests, enabling full visual effects (such as windows that deform when dragged) in Linux systems such as Ubuntu 9.10. More usefully, you’ll also be able to run Linux programs that require OpenGL acceleration. Parallels is alone in its support for OpenGL 2.1 in Linux and Windows 7. I found the Aero effects worked very smoothly in Windows 7 on my Mac Pro.
As with its competitors, Parallels handles typical office productivity applications with ease, in both Windows and Linux. Microsoft Office (Windows) and OpenOffice (Linux) both ran well, and had no troubles with the mixture of spreadsheets and documents I tried opening and editing in both. Web browsers and e-mail clients also performed well; if this is the extent of your virtual machine needs, Parallels 5 will easily meet your requirements.
Parallels 5 was also the fastest of the three programs I tested in the vast majority of the benchmark tests I ran—including the all-important real-world tests. Whether it was copying files to or from the Mac, or expanding zip archives, Parallels easily outpaced its competition. As one example, copying 2.5GB worth of files from the Mac to a Windows 7 machine via a shared folder took just over a minute in Parallels. That same task took nearly two minutes in VirtualBox, and about a minute and a half in Fusion.
Suspending, waking, booting, and shutting down were all quickest in Parallels, too. There’s a small caveat there, at least with suspending. When I tried sleeping the machine while a 3D game was running, it worked, but the game didn’t work after waking from sleep. In Fusion, the same experiment worked just fine—so one tradeoff of the faster sleep time in Parallels is, at least in my testing, an inability to sleep and then resume a 3D game. As a user, you’ll have to decide whether the faster suspend times in general are worth this tradeoff when trying to suspend an in-progress 3D game. (This may not be an issue with all games, but it was in the two I tested with.)
Like Fusion 3, Parallels 5 offers improved multi-monitor support, treating two displays as separate monitors in Windows, and as one large gargantuan display in Linux. Adding a third screen to the mix worked perfectly in Windows. In Linux, however, the third screen was seen by the system (the horizontal resolution reflected its existence), but it was all white, and I couldn’t see anything that I dragged onto that screen.
To make working in full-screen mode easier, Parallels 5 lets you specify behaviors for mousing into the four screen corners—you can switch to one of the other available view modes, or show the Parallels menu bar. Once you’ve set a behavior for a corner, moving the mouse into that corner will “peel down” and reveal a bit of your OS X desktop. Unfortunately, there’s no visual indication of what happens if you then click the mouse, so you’ll need to remember which corner you’ve assigned to which task.
New looks for Windows
Parallels 5 features a new view mode, Crystal, along with a new Mac-like theme for use within Windows. Crystal view mode takes Coherence mode one step further. You won’t find the Start menu or task bar anywhere in Crystal mode—in fact, you won’t even see the Parallels Desktop icon in your Dock. Instead, a menu bar icon lets you change view modes, see the Windows Start menu, or work with attached devices. You’ll also find your task bar icons (optionally) in the menu bar, and Windows Applications folder in your OS X Dock. Any open windows will be integrated with your OS X windows, as in Coherence mode.
Crystal mode works reasonably well, though you can’t Command-Tilde to toggle between multiple windows of the same Windows’ application, nor can you use Snow Leopard’s Dock Exposé mode with Windows’ windows. Both of these features work as expected in Fusion. I also found that dragging windows around in Crystal mode, when using an Aero theme in Windows 7, was quite laggy on my Mac Pro. I had much better results after I disabled Aero in Crystal mode (you can control this in the virtual machine’s Settings).
I experienced some strangeness when I had Windows Media Player window open in Crystal mode, and then used Exposé’s All Windows mode. In addition to the opened windows, I also saw three “ghost” windows for Windows Media Player, and some visual distortion was visible in the Excel window.
Selecting any one of these “ghost” windows would simply switch to Windows Media Player, so it wasn’t a critical issue, but it definitely looks odd when using Exposé.
The second new look for Windows in Parallels is MacLook, which is actually an OS X-like theme for Windows (XP, Vista, and 7). You apply MacLook via the View menu, and Parallels then works for a minute or two to install the theme. The objective is to make Windows less visually shocking for someone switching between the Mac OS and the Windows OS.
While that’s the idea, I think MacLook fails fairly badly in achieving the goal.
Because not every element in Windows is themable, what MacLook winds up giving you is a series of different-looking windows within Windows—some look something like OS X windows, others look like native Windows windows, and still others look like some strange Frankenstinian mixture of the two.
Some windows are square, others are rounded; none seem to have shadows and some are missing edge borders; some have the red/yellow/green buttons from OS X at the top right, some at the top left, and others lack them completely.
I can’t imagine that anyone who likes and uses the OS X interface regularly will find MacLook to be an improvement over the stock Windows theme—at least there’s some consistency there, and the windows all mostly look the same.
When I unchecked the MacLook entry in the View menu, which should disable MacLook, I had some issues in Windows 7—the uninstall process didn’t quite complete, leaving an even odder mix of window appearances. I was able to resolve that issue by using the Personalization section of Windows preferences to pick a stock Aero theme.
Graphics and gaming
Parallels Desktop 5 has a very good engine for gaming. I had excellent results with older games, and very good results even with more-recent releases. The demo version of Call of Duty 4, which I was unable to run with decent frame rates in Fusion, ran acceptably (albeit at minimum levels of detail) after some tweaking in Parallels.
With OpenGL acceleration in all main versions of Windows (and Linux), Parallels can handle programs that the other two virtualization apps just aren’t capable of running at present. In addition, Parallels’ OpenGl implementation, as measured in the Cinebench benchmarking test, was the fastest of the three programs in any version of Windows. (All game tests were done in Windows 7, to stress the virtual machine as much as possible.)
Calibrate Mac Battery
Parallels also does an admirable job with DirectX games in Windows. For example, I was able to play the MotoGP 08 demo with good frame rates in a 1024x768 window, though the audio did stutter a bit.
More impressively, Microsoft Flight Simulator X, a program that just a few years ago required a high-end PC to run at all, ran admirably well in Parallels. The audio was mostly stutter free, and the frame rate in a 1024x768-sized window was more than acceptable in the missions I tested.
That’s not to say I was getting anywhere near the frame rate I’d get if I were to reboot my Mac and run Flight Sim X natively via Boot Camp. However, for someone who doesn’t need every bit of speed in their games, the loss in frame rate may be worth the convenience of not having to reboot.
Most older games run very well, so much so that there’s no reason to reboot via Boot Camp to play “vintage” titles. Note that some older games may need to run on older versions of Windows; Windows 7 won’t run all your older games.
Given what was possible in gaming and graphics with the first version of Parallels a few years back—basically nothing—it’s amazing how much progress has been made in a very short period of time.
Multimedia performance
Tumblr media
To test Parallels’ media handling, I watched a 1080p Windows HD media file in full screen mode in each version of Windows. I was watching for visual glitches, listening for any disruption in audio playback, and tracking CPU usage to see how each virtual machine handled the task.
In short, all three of the Windows OSes handled the HD video file without any major issues. The one-CPU Windows 7 box had a bit more variation in frame rate than did the two-CPU machines, but it was very hard to spot unless watching the video back-to-back (which I did, many times).
Other features and observations
This version of Parallels cleans up the installation on a Mac—in prior versions, Parallels’ virtual network drivers were visible in the Network System Preferences panel. In Parallels Desktop 5, those drivers no longer appear, preventing possible user confusion.
Also new in Parallels 5 is support for Apple’ multi-touch gestures (swipe, rotate, pinch) using an Apple Magic Mouse or the trackpad in a multi-touch capable Apple laptop (you can also use an Apple Remote for some basic control, if you wish). Parallels Tools takes care of the communication between the mouse/track pad and the guest OS, so there are no special requirements on the Windows side—gestures simply work in Windows XP and newer.
I tested this using XP Pro on my MacBook Pro, and it worked as described. I was able to use pinch to zoom in/out on images in Microsoft’s Picture Viewer, and to change the size of the text on an Internet Explorer page. Rotation gestures also worked as expected on the images. If you’re a laptop or Magic Mouse user, this is a nice addition to your Windows virtual machines.
Mac Mouse Cursor
As you can probably tell from the features described in this review, Parallels is a feature-rich program. Sometimes, though, feature overload can lead to a complex user interface, and there are spots in Parallels where that’s the case.
Take the virtual machine Configuration panel, for instance, which contains 15 separate sections. Or the Preferences panel, which includes 11 separate tabs, some of which contain a large number of items that can be configured. While these sections and tabs are relatively well laid out, the sheer number of choices can cause confusion.
For example, you might think that defining how Mac and Windows 7 keyboard shortcuts coexist would be found in the virtual machine Configuration panel…but that’s not the case. Instead, you define the shortcuts in the Preferences panel, where you can set up definitions for Windows, Linux, OS X, and generic guests.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 5 review: Minor improvements, but it's still among the best
One of my favorite laptops to review every year is the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga. I've actually written five reviews of six units, and there have only been four previous generations. Some of my favorites were the second-gen model with its OLED display, and the third-gen model with Dolby Vision; it was also the last to offer the Lift and Lock keyboard.
I didn't push too hard for this year's model, the Gen 5, because not much has changed. Lenovo refreshed the Gen 4 with Intel Comet Lake processors last summer, so the biggest change with Gen 5 is the availability of Comet Lake vPro processors. Also, reviewers didn't get to check out the Comet Lake Gen 4 models, since those were announced just a few days after the Whiskey Lake models were sent to us.
While not much has changed, that's pretty much OK. This is still one of the best convertibles on the market, a premium machine that you can always count on. It has one of the best keyboards, a beautiful screen, and a solid aluminum build.
Note that the regular price is $3,511, but ThinkPads are never regular price. They're always discounted in some way or another, and the unit that Lenovo sent me is $2,106.60 as configured.
Day one
Design
As far as design goes, the chassis hasn't changed since last year at all. In fact, last year debuted the first aluminum model, marking a major change in direction. It's clear that Lenovo takes very few risks with its ThinkPads at all, usually sticking to black colors and steering clear of metal chasses. This one is Iron Gray though, and it looks quite nice.
Exactly one thing changed about the design. For the second year in a row, there's new branding. The Gen 4 debuted a new black ThinkPad logo and a new X1 logo. Now, those two are being combined into a ThinkPad X1 logo that sits in the corner. It's literally the only way you can tell the Gen 5 from the Gen 4.
Lenovo does a great job with its aluminum business PCs, as they look clean and sophisticated, while remaining stylish. I noticed this when it debuted ThinkBook, its sort of anti-ThinkPad where it can try new things.
Another thing that hasn't changed is the selection of ports. There are two Thunderbolt 3 ports, either of which can be used to charge, power dual 4K displays, and so on. And yes, these are full Thunderbolt 3 ports, as many devices only use the base spec, which supports one 4K monitor.
Next to one of the USB Type-C ports is an Ethernet connector, which is really meant to be used with Lenovo's mechanical docks. Also on the left side is an HDMI 1.4 port, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The ports seem dated though, with an HDMI standard that doesn't support proper 4K (at 60Hz) and a USB port that supports 5Gbps, something that I'm getting tired of seeing in premium PCs. I assume that this will change next year, and that it wasn't done this year because this is mostly a spec bump.
On the right side, there's another USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port, along with a power button. And of course, there's a pen garage, a staple of the product that's been there since the beginning.
The pen garage is my favorite feature of the ThinkPad X1 Yoga that Lenovo hasn't killed yet. If we were talking about features of all time, we'd be talking about the QHD OLED display that disappeared in Gen 3 and the Lift and Lock keyboard that disappeared in Gen 4, but I digress. A built in pen means that it's not getting in the way like it would if it was magnetically attached to the side, it's always charged, and it's always with you when you need it.
Display and audio
As always, this PC comes with a 14-inch display, and there are several configurations, none of which are QHD OLED. The newest is a Full HD panel with Privacy Guard, Lenovo's privacy screen that keeps people from looking over your shoulder. It's not on the config that the company sent me; in fact, Lenovo has never offered me a Privacy Guard display on a review unit, so I really can't vouch for it. HP has sent me several of its variants of Sure View display, and that's quite good, but there's a lot that goes into a good privacy display.
The other three options are FHD at 400 nits, QHD at 300 nits, and UHD at 500 nits with Dolby Vision HDR support. The one that Lenovo sent me is the UHD model. It always asks which one I prefer, and the answer doesn't change. I like pretty displays. Lenovo actually usually ends up sending me an FHD model as well, just for the better battery life, but I don't expect that that's coming this year, being such a minor refresh.
If you've been following along so far, then you know the bezels haven't changed at all, given that the footprint and display are the same size. The top bezel packs a webcam, an IR camera, and a ThinkShutter privacy guard, so you don't have to worry about putting tape over it.
Right above the keyboard are two up-firing speakers that are part of the Dolby Atmos audio system, which is frankly excellent. There are also two woofers on the bottom of the device, for great all-around sound. It's crystal clear and it gets loud too. I always like to think of just how bad the ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 2 - the first X1 Yoga that I reviewed and possibly my favorite all-time PC - was in terms of audio and how far it's come.
Keyboard and trackpad
One day I'm just going to accept that the Lift and Lock keyboard is gone. That day is not today. If you're unfamiliar, Lift and Lock was a frankly brilliant innovation of Lenovo's that made the keys retract into the keyboard when you folded the display back and used it as a tablet. It made it super comfortable to use. But obviously, there was a lot of mechanics that went into that, and that takes up space. When Lenovo shrunk the footprint with last year's model, it was time for my favorite feature of any convertible laptop ever to go away.
Now that I've got that over with, this is one of the best keyboards around. ThinkPads keyboards are the Cadillacs of keyboards; that's pretty well-known. They're accurate, they're comfortable, and you can count on them.
Obviously, they also include the TrackPoint, a relic from an age when trackpads on Windows PCs were terrible. Some people still love the TrackPoint though, and it's a trademark of ThinkPads. Yes, all ThinkPads have one of these little red nubs. I've tried to get used to it, but frankly, it's easy enough to ignore. If you really can't stand it, I'd urge you to check out Lenovo's ThinkBook lineup, which sheds a lot of these legacy parts.
The truth is that we don't need TrackPoints anymore because we have good trackpads now. Yes, I'm talking about Microsoft Precision trackpads. I do love the physical buttons though, and you can bet that if the TrackPoint went away, the buttons would too.
You'll also notice that it's got a fingerprint sensor to the right of the trackpad. Just like the convertible form factor itself and the Lift and Lock keyboard, Lenovo was the first with a fingerprint sensor. ThinkPads have been using fingerprint sensors long before Windows Hello was a thing.
Performance and battery life
The model that Lenovo sent me for review includes an Intel Core i7-10610U, a quad-core CPU with eight threads and a 15W TDP. It's the vPro variant of the Core i7-10510U. Interestingly, this is the highest-end CPU that's available on Lenovo's website right now, so you can't get the hexa-core Core i7-10710U or the vPro Core i7-10810U.
Performance is fine, and it's better than previous generations, obviously. Comet Lake is the only version of Intel's 10th-gen processors that comes with a vPro variant, so the 10nm Ice Lake is out of the question. One thing about Ice Lake, however, is that it has Iris Plus Graphics, so the CPU power is here with Comet Lake, but the graphics power really isn't. You can use it for some light Photoshop or something, but I wouldn't go too much further. This is a productivity machine.
For battery life, I got about five hours doing regular with with the battery slider at one notch above battery saver and brightness at 50%. To be clear, this would probably double if you got the FHD model, and that's why FHD models exist. They have a quarter of the pixels and can save a lot of power. QHD is a nice balance between the resolution of UHD and the power efficiency of FHD, but ever since Lenovo introduced UHD, it really hasn't been using premium QHD panels.
As you can see, the hexa-core Comet Lake Core i7 and the Ice Lake Core i7 both outperform the Core i7-10610U. And of course, AMD Ryzen 4000 blows away anything that Intel has in the 10th generation.
Conclusion
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga is a winner for the same reason that it's always been a winner. It's a well-built machine that passes a dozen MIL-STD-810G tests, and it's reliable. It has one of the best keyboards around, excellent Dolby Atmos speakers, and a pretty display.
It's not a winner for any new reasons because very little has changed. The bezels aren't any smaller than they were last year, it's still 2.99 pounds, and so on. And of course, I'm mad that there's no QHD OLED option and no Lift and Lock keyboard.
It's not necessarily a bad thing that the design hasn't changed, and that the bezels haven't shrunk at all. This is a business PC, and for businesses, everything about the ThinkPad X1 Yoga is more practical than anything else. It's the best at what it does, which is providing a premium, reliable computing experience.
