Rei is significantly more relaxed over the years, but the saying "once a hitman, always a hitman" rings true for him.

And Kazuki.

There were instances where they got robbed, or there were attempts made anyway, where Rei's sole working arm was preoccupied, or he found himself in an otherwise vulnerable position.

And yet, no harm had ever come to him, and that was not because of Rei's doing at all.

It was Kazuki.

That man had stored more weapons in the crevices of the diner than Rei had back at their old place, which was an incredible feat to surpass. All weapons were well out of reach and knowledge of Miri (unbeknownst to them, Miri knows all the hiding places) and if Rei were ever in a position to be distracted or incapable of disarming an intruder, he could always count on Kazuki.

The first time happened when Rei was carrying a heavy box and carefully positioning it on his shoulder to heave it on a high shelf. He had heard the intruder, his senses still sharp as ever, but had no time to grab any of the weapons from the kitchen.

But Rei knew, he didn't need to.

The second the intruder whipped out what Rei assumed was a pistol, the same second a gut twisting scream tore from the man's throat and a loud thud followed it.

The would-be robber was sweating (and probably soiling) himself. Kazuki Kurusu stood with one arm filled with groceries and the other holding a loaded gun aimed at the guy's head, a menacing, almost sadistic smile twisting his usually kind features.

Rei smirked and finished heaving up the box on the shelf, very much unbothered by the sight before him. "Ah, did you forget to buy the lemons, again?"

Kazuki's sadistic killer smile vanished and he glanced at Rei with a twitch in his eye. "Did I forget- I'll have you know, Miri wrote down everything we needed! So no, I didn't forget to buy the lemons."

Rei rested his hand on his hip. "Outside?"

Kazuki nodded, gun never once leaving its position aimed at the intruder's head. "Yep, but she can barely wait for dinner so lets wrap this up qui-"

The intruder thought Kazuki was sufficiently distracted to attempt to tackle Rei and at least flee the scene, but as soon as he moved, Kazuki and Rei moved as well.

Rei swiped his feet out and tripped the guy, while Kazuki brutally slammed his foot on top of the guy's head. An audible thud rang through the air when the man's skull made contact with the floor, the cold steel of the gun pressed into his head. "Oi, it's rude to interrupt people while they're talking, dickhead."

Rei was already calling the police, silently lamenting the fact that they couldn't bury him in their backyard. Perhaps his plants would grow faster too that way.

Oh well.

"You didn't buy the lemons." Rei stared blankly at Kazuki while the police escorted the beat up robber outside.

Kazuki's eye twitched again. "MIRI!"

Miri huffed. "I swear I wrote it down, Kazu Papa!"

If miri is like any other teenage girls she is probably into boybands and stuff and I just know she would force the lore of her favorite idols on her papas.

Idk what's funnier, kazuki going to fan events and concerts with his daughter holding on to the merch for her (I'm talking about headband with the idol's name and fan and shirt with a big face of the idol plastered on it) or rei being able to give a 20 minutes powerpoint presentation on the idols plus extra material on the rival group beefs and gossips surrounding those idols

One detail I really love in this episode aside from the fact that we see Rei becoming more and more included in Miri's upbringing is that they are oh so obviously the heart/brain/soul trope.

Kazuki being the heart, keeping the house functional (i think we all know how Rei's house was before him heh) and making sure the others stay alive. Him being the moral and verbal support for the other two every time they need it also contributes to his being the figurative "heart" of the house. Then of course his bubbly personality and constant attempts to keep the other two happy even though he has enough to deal with of his own, as a heart keeps functioning for the body under all circumstances because he can only exist as long as the body (and here, figuratively, their family) stays alive.

Rei then works as the brain. Although sometimes he can be a dumbass (or maybe he really just wanted kazuki to bath him but you never know with this dumbass) but that what a brain does, doesn't it? The brain exists upon knowledge and instincts combined and is the most vital part of the body. As Rei is seen here providing Miri with the knowledge which can help her best (and god do i need to hug this man because no, he's not telling them to Miri because he's never dealt with kids, but because that's probably what he was taught when he was that age). The brain's instincts are usually followed to protect the body (as i said, their family) and in the last episode we clearly saw that Rei was putting aside all his years of training (at least for a while) to listen to his instincts, because he had something to protect. And what I mentioned about him being the most vital part of the family, since because of him, shigeki wants to eliminate the other two from his life. So figuratively, if not for him, the other two, the body, would die.

Then comes Miri as the soul. In the first episode, we see that the house is clean, but not well lit. There is a sense of darkness but when Miri comes, all the lights are on and thew house is bright as an eyesore. As if the house without Miri being a representation of a body without a soul (see: Rei before and after Kazuki). Before her the house was functionable, but we see Rei and Kazuki working as mere colleagues, even arguing in the first episode but after she came, she strengthened their bonds and gave them a somewhat "enjoyable" environment. Like Kazuki coming into Rei's life to keep him emotionally alive, which was functionable, but because of Miri, they can now be described as happy and the house is finally tied together with the heart, brain and soul. Completing their family, the body.

I will never, never in my life shut up about this trio because oh my gods just look at them, i want to put them in a blender and drink them so they can be i just have so many feels alaksdhsvagskd

It was a breezy day, shivering as you walked down the street to your lover's apartment. You hadn't heard from him in a couple days and you were starting to get a bit worried. When you had last heard from him, he was a bit preoccupied with Miri as she had caught some sort of cold. You hoped that she was better now and to encourage her spirits you had baked up a batch of brownies that she loved. Rei also loved your treats and you wanted to make him cheer him up as well if he was stressed.

Deciding to give Rei a heads up, you dialed his number, holding onto your phone so it wouldn't slip from your shaky hands with the breeze, anybody could get sick from this weather. He didn't answer as you expected, he hadn't been for the past couple of days. You sighed as you dialed for Kazuki instead. "(Y/N), perfect timing! I was just about to call you because Rei has been super sick and won't come out from the washroom. Might need your help on this one." So that's why he's been radio silent. "I haven't heard from him either, I'm already on my way over don't worry!" You mouthed loudly over the wind. Quickening your pace, you huddled your way over to the flat. 

You knew Rei, you had been with him for quite awhile now, and he would always shy away from asking for help. There was once when he had a sprained wrist from a botched mission and refused help for a week, even with you prying at him to get it checked out resulting in his recovery time to lengthen longer than he would have liked. You weren't sure why until he brought up the fact that he was beaten by this abusive father whenever he would ask for help with physical injuries that he inflicted upon his own son. You grimace at the thought of that man. You were determined to nurse him back to health one way or another, to care for him as you knew he deserved that at the bare minimum. 

Pressing the button on the elevator, you entered the lift, wondering what Rei had come down with. You stopped in front of the apartment and gently knocked on the door. As if on cue, Kazuki let you in and Miri was there to latch onto your leg in a warm welcome. "I made some brownies for you all, are you all better now Miri? Tummy stopped hurting?" You smiled. She hummed enthusiastically. "Thank you (Y/N), I love your brownies!" You turned towards Kazuki. "You can have some too but they aren't as good as yours," you chuckled. "You know I always love your baking (Y/N), I'll save some for Rei too. He hasn't been eating or talking to any of us. I tried to give him food, or rather placed it in front of the washroom door but it'd be there the next morning." He sighed in defeat. "You know what he came down with?" You inquired, already turning the corner to check on your poor boyfriend. "No idea! Think he's been throwing up too," Kazuki called out. 

You gently knocked on the washroom door, hoping to hear a response from Rei. It was radio silent. You sighed as you knocked again, but this time with verbiage. "Rei it's me, can I come in? I've been missing you and heard you're feeling ill." Still nothing. You tried the handle and to your surprise it was unlocked. You stepped inside the room to see your lover curled up beside the toilet, hands clutching his stomach region and shaking. You rushed to his side and gently placed your hand on his shoulder to shake him to consciousness. "Rei, baby, talk to me, we need to get you to a hospital," you stammered. He shook his head as he mustered his strength to take your hand. He was cold, freezing at that. "No... hospital. 'm fine," He mumbled weakly. "Then what else are we supposed to do? I can't sit here and watch you suffer!" You cried out, anxious about his state of being. He was silent as you squeezed his hand and gently rubbed his back. He suddenly tried to sit up as he looked even paler in the face and grasped onto the toilet seat. You watched him hurl into the bowl as you gently patted his back. "I'm sorry I didn't know to come any sooner love," you mumbled.

You stood up to get him a washcloth and soaked it in water to cleanse the corners of his mouth. "Do you know what you're sick with?" You asked him quietly. He shook his head. "How about symptoms?" He shifted to lean on you and rest his head on your shoulder. "Throwing up, nauseous... haven't been able to eat, stomach hurts, 'm really tired," he whispered. You ran your fingers through his tangled messy locks as you listened. "Sounds like a stomach bug, but it'd be better to go to at least urgent care. I can't get you the meds you need over the counter," you hummed. "What's the last thing you ate?" "Leftover pasta two days ago..." He shifted into your warmth. You wrapped your arms around him as he buried his face in the crook of your neck. 

"Let me get you a blanket Rei and some water, you're dehydrated from throwing up so much," you observed as you saw the redness of his chapped lips. You felt him tighten his grip on your sweater as he silently conveyed that he didn't want you to leave. You softly planted a kiss on his forehead. "I'll be right back I promise." You leaned him upright against the wall as you quickened your pace out the door to grab him a blanket and other necessities. You ran down the stairs, skimming over the couch to grab a spare blanket and to the kitchen to grab a glass for liquid. "So what's the verdict?" Kazuki inquired. "Stomach bug... do you know anything about leftover pasta that he ate a couple days ago?"

Kazuki looked towards the rack of dishes. "I made a ton pasta like a week ago and had to be out of town for a couple days. I just washed up everything this morning. You think he left it out and ate from it?" It all made sense now, of course he would. You lightly facepalmed as you mumbled, "He was probably too busy with Miri and never put it back in the fridge, and chicken can't be left out for over a day," you sighed as you filled the glass with water and grabbed a liquid powder from the pantry that enhanced hydration. You were glad you bought some during a night of drinking you had with the boys, definitely coming in handy now.

You filed through the medicine cabinet, squinting to read through the names of the miscellaneous medication that was thrown in there. You found some anti nausea medication that wasn't past its expiration date and a bottle of painkillers and rushed back up the stairs to Rei's side. He had his head down and his knees tucked to his chest by the time you were back by his side. You draped the blanket over him as you placed the glass of water by his side. "Drink this, it'll help I promise. And here's a pill to help you with your nausea," you whispered. He lifted his head to gaze at you, his eyebags more prominent than ever as he looked exhausted and sickly. He obliged without saying anything, gulping down the water as if he had been on the brink of dehydration. “I also brought painkillers so let me know if you need one okay?” He nodded after gulping down the water. 

You sat next to him again on the cold washroom floor, gazing at his fragile form as he was gazing down at the floor. “You’ll get sick if you leave out leftovers for a couple days Rei, you were stressed out taking care of Miri while Kazuki was away?” You asked, taking his hand in yours. He nodded. “I forgot, was really hungry while playing my game… so I ate what was in front of me,” he mumbled. You grazed your thumb across the top of his hand feeling his warmth ever so slowly come back. “Call me next time if you need help okay? Whether you’re sick or stressed, just talk to me. I was so worried when you weren’t responding,” you spoke out. He let out a sigh and averted your gaze. “Sorry… not used to asking for help,” he confessed.

You moved your hands up to caress his arm, you knew how much he loved your physical touch, even if he never admitted it out loud. “If I asked, I’d just get rejected… beaten… hurt. I’m tired of it,” he huffed out. Your heart shattered at his words. “Not with me, or Kazuki. We were worried about you. We wouldn’t do that to you Rei,” you comforted. “Always been told to… do it myself.” “Not anymore, you can rely on us, your real family,” you smiled. You felt him relax a bit, letting himself lean against your touch. “Let’s go to the urgent care yeah? Getting those antibiotics will help you feel better much sooner,” you asked, hopefully persuading him this time. He fell silent before squeezing his hand around yours, finally giving in. “Okay.” 

You could tell he was a bit anxious going to the hospital, he hadn’t been raised up going to them and never voluntarily went when he had a physical injury. Kazuki was surprised to see you holding him and exiting out the door. “Papa!” Miri cried, rushing to Rei’s side. He gently ruffled Miri’s hair as he leaned on you for support. “Your Papa isn’t feeling well Miri, but we’re taking him to the hospital now so he can get better and play with you really soon!” You informed her. “Awh… feel better Papa Rei!” She empathized. You promised to stick by Rei’s side that entire day, from the car ride to the waiting room, holding his hand and letting him rely on you while the two of you waited for his name to be called. You went in with him when his name was called, explaining to the nurse everything that he was feeling as he didn’t do well talking in such settings. As you suspected, he did have a stomach bug and was promptly prescribed antibiotics for his case. 

“So I take these in the morning, and at night?” He asked, squirting at the letters in the packaging. You nodded, “Yup, and you have to remember or else they won’t work like they’re supposed to.” “Hm I’ll try… might forget though,” he mused. You stopped walking and turned towards him, “So does that mean I need to stay over until you’re healthy again?” You saw a half-smile form on his face. “I wouldn’t mind.” Of course you’d do that for him, you wouldn’t let him get as sickly as he was that morning again if he were to remain in your sights. “Well first things first, you’re not sleeping in the tub, we wouldn’t want you being in more pain than you already are now right?” “Fine…you’d have to sleep next to me then,” he mumbled the last part. You felt a grin coming on your face. “What was that?” you pressed, wanting him to repeat himself. He kept his gaze on the floor, trying not to hide the fact that he was flustered. 

The anti-nausea pills had already kicked in by the time the two of you arrived home. You heard his stomach grumbling as you stepped over the threshold into the flat. The apartment was oddly silent, Kazuki must have gone out with Miri for an evening stroll or something of the sort. “You think you can eat something now?”  You asked, wanting him to ingest something before taking his medication. He nodded slowly, “Maybe a little…” You made your way over to the brownies you brought over earlier as there was nothing else ready to eat. You grabbed one and brought it to Rei, holding it up to his mouth. He took a small bite, feeling a bit uplifted as he remembered the taste of your baking that he missed, it was the first time he felt as if he could consume something in days. “It’s so yummy,” he mumbled, taking another bite. As much as you didn’t want his first meal after days to be straight sugar, it was better than nothing.

After he was done, the two of you made your way up to his bedroom, knocking the rolled up foam off of the bed, a dummy that he had set up there when he slept in the tub. “You want a change of clothes?” you asked him, preferably he sleep in something comfier than a jacket and skinny jeans. He nodded and you made your way over to his wardrobe to pick out some comfortable pajamas for him. “Thank you for today (Y/N),” he mumbled, trying to express his sentiment towards you. You walked back over to him as you lifted his chin with your finger. Making eye contact with him, you spoke softly, “Of course Rei, I love you. I never want to see you like that again.” You felt his hand snake towards the back of your head, pulling you closer to him to seal off the distance with a soft kiss. He didn’t initiate the physical contact often, so you felt accomplished when he pressed his lips to yours. 

You ran your fingers through his hair, melting more into the kiss. He finally pulled away after he was breathless, staring at you with a messy smile on his face. “Sleep with me,” he mumbled. “I will I’m not leaving don’t worry, but you need to take your pill first and get you out of these clothes.” He obliged as you lifted his shirt off, exposing his toned figure and the scars that came along with it. He’s so beautiful, you thought as you handed him a soft pajama shirt to put on. He shimmied out of his pants next as you handed him some bottoms, reaching out to the nightstand to grab one of the pills he was prescribed. He was so comfortable around you, and he felt a bit more okay being vulnerable now after today. You handed him the pill and a glass of water, making sure he took the medication before setting it back on the nightstand for him.

You flicked the light off as he made his way under the blankets and sheets, staring at you as he waited for you to come next to him. “You feel better now baby? No more pain or nausea?” You whispered to him, sliding your figure next to him. He nodded as he wrapped his arms around you, having a bit more strength to give you affection now. “So much better,” he mumbled. You planted kisses on his forehead and cheek, seeing a flush of pink on his cheeks illuminated by the moonlight. You let him find shelter in the crook of your neck as he pressed himself closer to you, curling up as he usually did in the tub but against your figure. It had been a long day for you too, resulting in your soft snores filling up the silent room before he could be fully unconscious. He felt so lucky to have you, to have you nurse him back to health, someone he could let his guard down around. 

“Love you too,” he reciprocated, letting himself slumber in your grasp, hoping to have a fast recovery so he could take care of you too.

Kazuki hates it.

He gets the job will get done but it’s just so….annoying.

Why do they always have to wait til the last minute? Why couldn’t they just do the task then be lazy the rest of the time?? Not be lazy and then do the task.

Since he’s more type A than most it’s really frustrating, but he appreciates it just the way they handle task so he tries to be understanding.

Rei

He’s the same way, so he can’t really throw stones.

Rei would rather literally die than do things some days. So their active avoidance in doing things is something they bonded over.

But, things do have to get done eventually and he appreciates how efficient they are when they want to be.

They’ve told him that being fast & efficient is the easiest way to get back to being lazy. Rei thinks that the easiest way is to wait it out and let someone else do it, but he’d never say that.

Kyutaro

If it’s a regular life thing he doesn’t mind. But if it’s a work thing, he gets irritated.

Be it the bar or the behind-the-scenes job, Kyutaro doesn’t get paid until the job is done.

You don’t mess with the man’s money.

Will scold them frequently about getting contracts done on time, and just lightly scold them about being more proactive in tasks.

Buddy Daddies HC: The series should end with the family having a pet cat.

The Forgers (SxF) had gotten a dog... And Rei wanted to adopt a cat at the beginning of the series.

I think it would be wonderful to see Kazuki, Rei, and Miri taking care of a cat... and imagine this happening on Christmas day that they'd welcome their new addition to the family... Also as a celebration for the day that Miri came into their lives.

A thought or idea I've had swirling in my head for some time now is if Buddy Daddies were to get a second season or OVA, "Don't Say Good Bye" is reintroduced/reorchestrated more as a lullaby. (While I don't think this will happen in the final CD drama, my understanding of the synopsis makes me feel like this is something that Rei and Kazuki might plausibly do in the future/after they talk with Miri about Misaki's passing.)

Perhaps the last verse is taken out or Kazuki and Rei come up with some new words, but by singing this song to Miri, it would kinda be like their promise to never leave her and serve as a way to keep Misaki present in Miri's life.

When Kazuki first heard Misaki sing "Don't Say Good Bye" in ep. 3, he instantly recognized it from Miri singing it at home. So, in hearing Miri sing it many times (or teaching the song to her papas), they could then start singing it to her.

Or, if Miri only knows the main melody, perhaps Kazuki could scour the Internet for some recording of the song. Because I have the feeling in this scenario, once Miri starts to hear the lyrics, she may not fully understand the meaning, but she will instantly recognize it as Misaki's song.

Maybe this is just my interpretation, but I felt that Rei and Kazuki were both deeply effected by Misaki's death, especially since by that point of the story, they were both willing to do anything to protect Miri and her happiness. And at the end of the series, Miri still shows a love for her mother, both during the main storyline when she asks if Misaki is coming to the Christmas Party (and looking sad when neither papa could give her a firm "yes") and during the epilogue when she tells the photo of the two of them she is heading out. So again, by bringing back "Don't Say Good Bye" in this context, Misaki stays present in their lives and another layer is added to its meaning.

Post 10 year timeskip

Rei and Kazuki are cleaning up the kitchen, Kazuki is carrying boxes to the storage room so they store the food safely for tomorrow. Rei is left alone in the kitchen wiping the counters clean.

Someone comes in despite the closed sign being turned up and Rei glances at them and immediately tenses.

He could recognize that look anywhere.

A look that spelled trouble and screamed weapon.

Rei scanned the man from head to toe, eyes zeroing in on what appeared to be a concealed knife from within the man's jacket pocket. "Hey, uh, you guy's still open?"

"No, the closed sign is displayed on the front door, I'm afraid you'll have to leave." Rei didn't miss the way the stranger kept glancing at his limp arm by his side, as if gauging how much of a threat Rei posed since being crippled.

Oh, how dangerous it was to underestimate your opponent.

The man approached the counter and slid his hand along the polished wood. "Sir, I said we were closed."

Rei rolled his eyes when the stranger made a sharp turn to enter into the kitchen area, obviously to gain momentum to draw his knife and stab him.

Good thing Rei couldn't get rid of his blood that easily.

As soon as he caught the glint of metal, Rei sprung into action.

Using his limp arm as a feint, faking the movement of reaching for something, Rei distracted the man long enough to grab his wrist holding the knife and twisting the limb sharply.

The man cried out in pain, bones grinding against each-other viciously. "I said, we were closed."

The man ignored Rei and tried to punch him with his free hand, but Rei acted quickly. He kicked the man's chin, twisting his arm further, causing him to drop the knife. Right into Rei's hand.

Twirling the knife in his hand to hold it in a reverse grip, Rei aimed for the spot between his eyebrows.

When the stranger opened his eyes again, he was met with the sharp edge of his blade inches away from his face. "You have 5 seconds to decide whether you want your liver carved out by your own knife or you run away and never set foot in here again."

The stranger didn't even use the full five seconds before he was out the door, his cries echoing through the half empty streets.

Kazuki returned from the backroom, scratching his head. "Did that guy want a refund?" He rose an eyebrow at the knife in Rei's hand. "Hey man, I told you not to threaten our customers for looking at the family pictures."

Rei tossed the knife into the drawer and closed it, gazing blankly at Kazuki. "....You're one to talk. Didn't you threaten to disembowel a kid and use his innards as ingredients for our next menu item?"

Kazuki clenched his fist at the memory. "I threatened a man looking at pictures of our Miri lewdly! You were itching to get your hand on him, too!" He pouted, sneering at Rei.

Rei grinned. "The kid was 16, I draw the line at beating up kids."

Kazuki cackled maniacally. "HA! Weakling! Good thing you have me! I'll throw hands with a toddler if he made kissy faces at yo- I mean Miri!"

Rei rose an eyebrow at the verbal slip, watching his partner's face heat up.

"Hm...sure you would."

You kicked off your shoes as you entered Rei’s apartment. You practically lived there by now with how close you two have gotten and how much he wants you around. After a long day at your corporate job, you just wanted to relax in his arms. You took long strides and approached him, noticing that he was playing games in in the dark again. You were able to slip yourself under his arms, sitting between his legs as you gazed at his shooting abilities in the game. “Welcome home,” he mumbled whilst planting kisses on your scalp and inhaled your scent while still keeping his eyes still on the game.

You relaxed into his touch and tilted your head back to look at your lover. “I missed you baby,” you mused. “Missed you too,” he hummed, still attentive on his game.
