do you have any tips for drawing expressions? it’s one thing that I always notice about your art, I love how expressive your characters are.
thank you so much!! it really means a ton bc expressions are one of the things i've focused & worked the hardest on over the years :D ♥
which ALSO MEANS--HA, YOU ACTIVATED MY SPECIAL INTEREST TRAP CARD i am now going to talk at you all for far too long about it >:) buckle up!
prefacing this by saying i Love animation, this makes me biased as hell with where i get my sources + how i study art. anyway!
i think my biggest #1 tip is don't be afraid to get goofy with it--characters don't have to look cool and stoic all the time, they can be silly! if an expression reads better, but looks a little off-model, do it anyway! make that guy look weird!
i draw little thumbnail expressions a Lot, whether for actual art or for just fun doodling. i don't have any recent ones to hand-- but here's some from a while ago. they help a ton to figure out what works quickly without worrying about actual facial features
they also help to see if i can push an expression further, it's easier to test out weird things on a tiny round doodle and then translate that into an actual drawing later on. pushing expressions To The Limits is a really good exercise in itself!
gonna put the rest under the cut bc it's getting long & i have a lot more to say
ok this in itself is a whole topic i can go on about for hours, but i'll try to keep it semi brief--i Love considering how different characters would show emotions! how one character would express sadness, how that would be different to another, how one character would smile vs. another, stuff like that!
related, giving characters individual expression quirks. twitch's :3 mouth & lazy lidded eyes if you could see them anyway & Very Smug Eyebrows, while grace has heavy low eyebrows & sad puppy eyes & usually looks at least 10% unsure at all times. it makes every single twitch smile look slightly not genuine and makes grace look. well. you know. the quirks are really fun to think of, and it makes drawing expressions feel a lot more fun when you personalise them!!
expressions can be easier to think of when you put characters in scenarios & consider how they'd react. it can also help to think of the character Moving/talking, instead of as a static image. mini comics or just adding dialogue to art helps a lot with this, i've only just started doing it and i'm having a blast!!
ok this one is weird and hard to explain and might only be applicable to me bc i can't see images in my brain-- but i'll throw it out there just in case! lots of artists make faces in the mirror to reference their own expressions, but it's never worked for me
i Do still act stuff out in my brain & make faces irl, but instead of doing it in the mirror, i just make the expression & consider how my face is moving in Words? ok for example This Comic, last panel for twitch--i'd run through the dialogue in my head and move around how i feel like they would, and list it off in Words--raised eyebrows, closed eyes, tilted head, etc etc. then i have a framework to base the expression on! and i don't need to stare into my own face in the mirror for reference. no mirror needed at all, actually. win/win. i do this for body language too
(yes this makes you look insane btw. sorry. if you do it too long best case scenario you get very dextrous eyebrows and worst case scenario you might start making cartoon character faces irl (or both) (i'm both))
not sure how much it helps specifically with expressions outside of animation, but it's a fun exercise--learning the limits of a character's face, animation calls it squash & stretch. drawing a face in the two most extreme states. so on character expression sheets you'll see weird faces like this⤵️ that's what that is
another exercise, i always have a ton of art saved that i like the expressions of. usually a lot of concept art for films. i'll do studies of them & redraw them, and/or take ocs and redraw them with those expressions! it's a great way to look at how other artists do stuff and yoink bits you like.
you'll hear this a lot if you look up Any art tips, but references & studies are great. i get a lot of inspo from disney concept art bc their artists are very talented people, but currently i hope disney studios' own hubris eats it alive. i want to see mickey mouse buried in a hole, the rat bastard. anyway some places i personally take inspiration from:
i look at a lot of animation concept art, some good sources are characterdesignreferences, livinglineslibrary, there's pdfs of animation art books all over the place too.
specific concept artists i like are jin kim & shiyoon kim !! they do Great expressions.
outside of film industry, tealin and tracy butler of lackadaisy cats are some inspirations! tracy butler has a great expressions tutorial here
if you find this stuff interesting & like reading, the illusion of life by ollie johnston & frank thomas is an incredible insight into the thought process behind stuff like this! there's a pdf here, unfortunately just a scanned copy but worth a read if you like this stuff!! specifically chapters 'character development', 'animating expressions & dialogue', and 'acting & emotions'

I managed to finish the colours for the redraw in time! I'm incredibly proud of how these turned out, especially in comparison to the original from just one year ago!
unfortunately I severely underestimated the time required for the shading of this piece - which funnily enough also happened while working on the original - but I'm sure I'll get it done much quicker than last time!
I was already blown away by how fast I did the line art and colouring this time around, and I'm sure it'll get even better with more studies and practice ^v^

This is from an au created by @bonkdd, but i did rob and andrew's designs bc i never saw his designs for them. i also added a lot of lore and plot stuff because i really liked the concept. in simple terms the tallies are robots that were abandoned by Marvin after he passed away so now they're falling apart n stuff without him to care for them (that's why rob hides his face). Anyways, huge thanks to Bonk for the original idea! They're a great artist, you should go check them out!

Did an embossing peice. It's the Mojo Chessmaster! I tried by best to make it as detailed as possible, and I think I did pretty alright. The neck was probably the worst part to do. Below are close-ups
the head of the guitar was a pain in the ass.
This part was also pretty tricky but it came out okay. the dials at the bottom are raised as much as I could get them to go, so I'm not worried about them. My issue here was the pickups.
I also added Flansburgh's little signature guy but i drew his hair because why not? Anyways this piece took me a good hour or so to finish, I think it'll fetch a good grade (it was for my metal design class).
I'll add a sketch I just did as a bonus:
it's from a tally hall fanfic/au i made back in may after my grandpa passed away. It was a great stress-reliever and I still really like how it turned out. It's about cryptids and monsters and shit. I'll post a summary on a different post because this one was mostly for the drawings. I might post a few installments of it on my ao3. It could be a weekly thing since i usually have time on fridays to write.
Once again, a close-up is available below.
I put literal hours of research on cryptids and of the area (ann harbor, MI) while writing this fic. It was fun though, and it helped me a lot. Feel free to ask me anything about the plot or world-building !

Deep in the Iarvaris Estate, on the wall of Dr Taenaran Iarvaris' study, hangs a gold-adorned frame, its contents a copy of the first page of a newspaper.

At 500 years old, he is the youngest elf to enter the prestigious Arkadia Conservatory, focusing his studies on the ancient Arcane art of Necromancy, known for its complex and difficult practices and rituals.
Elyon has shown an incredible natural talent for such art from an early age, rumoured to have started his studies even before being accepted into Arkadia.
Prof. Sarven, who has taught Necromancy and Clarividence in Arkadia for more than two thousand years has stated that "Mr Iarvaris has proved to be quite a promising student" in the entrance exams and "has a bright future ahead as a Necromancer."
It is no surprise to those who know him that he has been chosen for the last spot at the Conservatory, even surpassing the much older candidates such as Keya Keaquinal, heiress to the Silver Spire Resort, Nym Norven, heir to the famous casino chain "The Scepter", Plume Wintershore, heir to the Harmony restaurants and Adorellan Fenyra, second eldest son of actress Allannia Gendove and doctor Airdan Fenyra.
"Honestly, it was not surprising he got in", stated Norven "We all had heard the rumours, and although it is a shame to not have been accepted into Arkadia, it was an honour to meet such a promising Necromancer." They concluded.
However, not everyone shared those thoughts. When asked about his thoughts on the results of the entrance exams, the Fenyra heir said that "Iarvaris was lucky this year" and that "He best be prepared, next year I will surely be accepted."
Deulara Ravastina Iarvaris, mother of Elyon Iarvaris has stated "I could not be more proud of my son, he not only is the youngest Iarvaris accepted into Arkadia, but also the youngest elf. I know my boy has such a bright future ahead of him, I am proud to see the brilliant young elf he is turning into."
The father of Elyon Iarvaris, Dr Taenaran Iarvaris, having been recently promoted to Medical Doctor at Atlas Orbital Base, was not present at the acceptance ceremony. However, once contacted by our team, he stated "I knew without a doubt that my son would enter, and I am very proud of my son's performance in the exams. I know he will be a very successful student and Necromancer."

No one will believe you (SBP au) (The fire god festival arc) (KNY s2 redraw)
We don't talk about how much of a stroke I was having drawing Koku's hair & kimono side view
Okay, so remember when I said the last SBP au drawing with Tamayo & Akeno was a part three to two other drawings? Well, this is the part one. So, it's this one first, that other one last, & another one on the way in the middle
Anyways, onto the story!
This is day five right before the Kagura dance takes place. The festival lasts six days, all from sunset to sunrise, & the ritual dance happens on the last say, & Astaroth is preforming it this year. Anyways, Koku notices a very suspicious man going up to the Ryuuzaki estate, so he investigates. Upon hiding & sneaking around, he hears "Ryuko" talking to Muzan. After Muzan leaves, Koku is BOILING since he was right about her not being trusted. Right when he's about to dart out & tell Yushiro, a disfigured hand grabs him & throws him into the office. & there stood Ryuko. Or, in this case, Kurayami. She is eerily calm about this whole thing, while Koku is trying to act like he isn't afraid (He is to a certain extent, but it's him). A part of him is wondering why she's so calm about this whole thing, & that's when she says something he knows she's right about.
If he tells anyone who she really is, no one will ever believe him.
This is also my first time playing around with the effects on Pixlr E, hence the glitch effect. I think it actually looks really cool!

So, I have decided to formally retire from FireAlpaca and will not be revisiting any of my old works made on that app (just because of personal preference). SO, I've decided to share some of my favorite WIPs that I had hoped to finish once upon a time lol.

Pico jumpscare
I got really into Pico's school way back when and never saw any fanart for his death screen. So I wanted to try my hand at it.
Got through the lineart before I decided I didn't like it and was not skilled enough to salvage it so I gave up. Might redraw this in the future though!
Haha mind the huge empty space on this one.
This was going to be a picture of Gregory and Freddy from FNaF Security Breach (made this around the time the game came out), but I quickly realized I couldn't draw animatronics and quit lol.
You can kinda see the stripe on Gregory's shirt, but my sketching abilities back then were awful so it's a little hard.

This bean is a character from To Your Eternity, an anime I randomly found on Netflix once and fell in love with (I quit at the weird scene in the prison tho, remind me to finish it).

MULTIFANDOM IDEAAAAA
So me and my sister were talking a few years ago, and I think one of us misspoke and said "Coffee shot" instead of "Coffee shop," so this AU was born.
It's a coffee shop called the Coffee Shot staffed by characters that love guns and have guns and shoot guns and I love them. The shop is frequented by characters from other franchises (in this case Danganronpa), and it's got the best coffee and the best theming you've ever seen >:)

This one was based on Pinterest lol. I have boards for both of these franchises, but they kept wanting to save these two characters to each other's boards lol. SO I wanted to make a style swap with them! Didn't end up finishing it, though, but I do want to come back to it!

It was a Beauty and the Beast one.

I quit on this picture really quick tho. Made the sketch on Photoshop 2 years ago, transferred the sketch to FireAlpaca, then realized the sketch sucked and didn't bother trying again.

There's all my sketches. The ones that I'm willing to share, that is.
Let this be a lesson that not all of your pictures are going to go the way you want to. Your sketches are going to be messy, your lineart isn't going to match up, your colors are going to look funky, and your shading is going to want to make you rip out your hair sometimes.
I think what's important is to make sure that all that stuff doesn't discourage you.
If you give up all together, you'll never know what you'd've been able to produce if you hadn't.
If a picture isn't working for you, find out why. Then quit that picture, practice, and come back. You'll be able to compare yourself to your own art instead of other people's, which will give you a clearer sense of how far you've come.

It's my birthday so I can finally be cringe legally. So, here's some bits and pieces of something that I've been playing with off and on since about June. As I sit here and finish off the last of my birthday sushi, I ask myself what I'd regret more: NOT sharing something I'm admittedly proud to have slaved over played around with for the last few months, OR the fact that this basically spells out how I'm a LeFou stan. Oh well. There's only one way to find out.
''One evening, whilst being dragged along on a hunting trip with his self-absorbed meathead of a stepbrother, LeFou gets lost and ends up at a mysterious castle forgotten by time, hiding a secret far more mysterious and peculiar than anything anyone's seen before. But at the same time it is, in every way possible, a tale as old as time.''
There's a whole lotta words to be said about all of this junk, so I'll put it under a readmore for the convenience of all. Please don't be mean to me about my interests.
Sketches 1 and 2 - First (Left) and final (Right) pass of Beast!Nicole
I was very tense in life and about this entire idea when I first started to dip my toes into it, and that definitely translates into my first try at drawing Beast!Nicole. Much like the Beast in the original 1991 Disney classic that has luckily never been turned into an ugly abomination of a live action cash grab remake, I tried to mix several animals in her design. She's got the lower half and tail of a wolf, upper torso of a lion, and her head...where it gets messy. I've always loved the designs of the hyenas in The Lion King, so I drew inspiration from Shenzi for her neck and part of her head. Her mouth/muzzle however is based on some of those cursed photoshops of horses with wolf teeth:
I can remember I'd JUST come back from seeing a special showing of Kung Fu Panda 2 the morning I drew the very first one of Nicole, and I've always LOVED Boss Wolf. I think you can see just a BIT of inspiration from his body shape looking at her. It probably comes across a bit better in the final when I cleaned her up somewhat. I hate looking at that first one so much, actually. It's so unforgivably clunky. BUT I did get the hang of her with time, hence the second pass. Wanna know a fun fact? Those colors were originally just something I kinda slapped together as placeholders. But...I grew pretty attached to them, so they stayed. There is...almost a month between her initial test and her final, btw.
Sketch 2 - Expression test/me having some fun
Yeahhh there was a time when I had no idea how far I was gonna actually try and go with this stuff, so I just kinda...played with it. Beast!Nicole is a treat to draw, so I jumped at any excuse to sketch her. Where the Beast in the movie had to learn to be bit more of a gentleman and control his temper, Nicole is...prone to impatience and outbursts under extreme stress. In this AU, she was forced to take the throne at a young age after the death of the previous king and queen. Going from a teenager to a ruler almost overnight weighed heavily on her, and she's got a short fuse. The night o the party in which the enchantress cursed her was a result of her breaking down and not thinking. I know there's debate in some places about whether or not the enchantress was right to curse an 11 year old prince for denying entry to a stranger, so...I tried to make this version a bit more...ambiguous on who's at fault. Maybe Nicole was being hasty, and maybe the enchantress was wrong to condemn a teenager to Eternal Fursuit just for trying to abide by stranger danger rules. IDK.
Side note - I can't help but imagine that in her Beast form, Nicole sounds like April Winchell. Think prime angry Sylvia from Wander Over Yonder.
Sketch 3 - Smiledog.jpg ''And give him an elegant, ladylike smile!!''
I wanted her to be unsettling. LITERALLY so unsettling. She;s got a horse mouth with canine teeth, I can't imagine that puts a warm feeling in anyone's heart at all. I also just really wanted to redraw that smile scene as an excuse to draw a lot of teeth.
Remember how I said Nicole's got BAD trust issues? Most of that comes from the memory of having suitors, possible consorts, and foreign princes trying to woo and flirt. They were suffocating, and it left her with a lot of lasting bad impressions. Wouldn't call it outright sexism on her part, just...caution based on experience. To the point where the rest of the enchanted objects heard that only true love's kiss could break the spell and they all went ''Hahaha we are so fucked'' Took them forever to even begin to fathom the idea that this LeFou guy MIGHT maybe be the one to break it???
But...in the end, they work together because...they're not typical of what the world expects from them. In MY headcanon, which ignores and disowns any and all alleged ''Live action remakes from 2017'' that may or may not include ''Josh Gad'', LeFou is Gaston's yougner step brother. A headcanon, I might add, that was inspired by @wreckham and their Balto rewrite where Star is Steele's younger brother. What does that have to do with Gaston and LeFou? Well:
A weird hill to die on headcanon-wise, but I'll take it. Anyway, Nicole is a huge terrifying beast. A practical manifestation of how awkward and out of place she felt as a young princess trying so hard to fit into a role she ascended to before her time (Honestly, Nicole is just Twilight Sparkle's bookworm tendencies and lack of social skills mixed with the intimidating aura of Vitani and Sergeant Calhoun. Kiiiiind of a mess). She isn't small and lovely and fair like a young princess should be. MEANWHILE, LeFou is the young brother to the ''town hero'' and...that's kinda hard to measure up to. He's not the huge hulking man that's traditionally sought after. *COUGH* *COUGH*
They sort of...find a connection over this topic. Nicole likes him because he's nothing like the rich stuffed shirts that always flexed their looks and wealth to try and win her heart, and LeFou likes that she doesn't care if he's not a big and tough guy. Every Furry girlboss needs a short king.
Sketch 4 - ''THAT HURTS!!''
TBH the thing about this was...there WERE a few scenes I felt...REALLY obligated to try. The Ballroom scene WAS one of those, but unfortunately you won't see that one, since its over tumblr's photo size limit. Kinda happy about that, since it looks...less than great. Where was I? Oh yeah. Uhhhh this is one of my favorite scenes from the movie so I ABSOLUTELY wanted to give it a shot with these two. Sketches 4-6 are all drawn directly into screenshots from the movie because I was NOT about to try and redraw those backgrounds. God this movie is GORGEOUS but soooo intricate and i am only a little creature who scares easily. Also, I had OTHER things that were hard to draw that I was more focused on. Wanna know what those things were?! LEFOU. I don't know if I'm bad at diverse faces or maybe he's just genuinely a little tricky, but GOD I still have a hard time drawing him. Assume every sketch of LeFou here in this post took me three hours minimum. That's why most of these are of him and Nicole. My deal with myself was that if I at least gave him a good college try, I could ALSO have fun drawing Nicole, who is WAY easier. I mean I'm...getting a LITTLE better at him, but still. He was NOT east the first few times.
Nicole's snarly face in this one was so fun to draw. I looked at a lot of Nala during the chase scene with Pumbaa, and Sabor fighting Tarzan to get her teeth right. Hilariously, I also looked at Steele.

Sketch 6 - Nicole's hour in the fursuit is over
THat's right I KEPT her in the dress for the final fight in this AU. Why??? I DON'T KNOW I wanted to. Maybe it was a reference to the ''running from a T Rex in high heels'' scene in Jurassic World. Maybe it was me trying to convey how Nicole has finally come to own the ''princess'' she never thought she could be. I DON'T KNOW. OH. and by the way. her dress is loosely inspired by the one @Johannathemad drew here
Sketch 7 - A most peculiar Mademoiselle
I was looking at these by @davidgilson and they were SO cute I....KINDA wanted to give something similar to it a shot. That tiny LeFou is going to make me fucking scream he is SO small
You guys wanna know a really embarrassing fact? So...LeFou is voiced by Jesse Corti, right? Who ALSO provided the signing voice for Charlie in All Dogs Go To Heaven 2. So....AHEM and COUGH maybe Ive been listening to these a lot while I draw LeFou and Nicole. What of it.
Um....that's all for now, but....Hopefully there might be some more on the horizon. I've been...kinda burnt out and tired as a result of some work drama lately, but...I have more sketches and ideas with this AU I'd like to do. It's been...really fun to play with, honestly. i had a GREAT birthday tho, and...I think it was more than appropriate that I shared this today <3

Woop woop old au alert. (Decided to redraw em)
ok so I made this au back in December last year and what it is is just this magical-stuck in some other place au. (That’s Austin btw). Summary of the story is Austin gets booted from hell and gets put into another place and finds Henry there and they just decided to explore the place together and so they did and eventually they find Jonathan and Mike. Stuff happens.

Anyways onto Austin; In the drawing, that’s Austins “magical” form. He’s literally just some fox person with a weapon. That’s all. Can change in and out of it though, only if he’s like in danger.

this is a pair of angst filled drawings. So the girl on the top is my gem oc royal purple saphrine (saphrines made by spookiemora) and saphrines eat saphires to steal there abilitys of future vision. So I have a human hybrid oc who's half saphire, and I wondered "what would happen if a saphrine tried to eat a hlsaphire human hybrid" and thus agst insued. The character with the gun on the bottom is Irene, who is the girlfriend of Sophie (the aforementioned saphire human hybrid). So yeah just some angst for angsts sake lol

Seana’s 2022 art highlights (a thread)
(Note: this is a reupload of a thread i did on twitter a few years back. so these are really old. don't worry, this is the final reupload.)
this thread, unlike the previous 3 art threads, will be full of holes. this is because i haven’t drawn shit this year, mostly introspect. and gaming. tf2 has done horrors to my schedule.
January: I didn’t draw anything. Skip.
well, nothing of SHOWING, anyways. i scribbled, but they’re horseshit and that’s all you should know about them.
February: Charlie’s family, ft Mia. i drew the left picture for the comic but i’m gonna be honest... i don’t, like the poses that much. posing has been a big weakness for me, for a long time, and the limited bends in objects kinda highlight that.
March: redraw of an old traditional drawing. i don’t think i liked this one either. unsatisfied. there’s been a pattern for this year.
also [there's] a commission, that’s been asked for since January. i wish i didn’t take that long. i’m still very sorry to my commissioner.
April: Portal phase. my commission money was spent on the Orange Box... because i didn’t know Portal 2 wasn’t on the Orange Box. oops. my friend bought Portal 2 for me. i’m really thankful for them.

May: strangely, i drew Cutter Knife a lot? i like him, wish i had time and motivation to work on the comic, but i fucked with myself by hastily releasing it when i still didn’t know everything about them.
June: didn’t have much drawing opportunities, due to finals and the vacation to America that followed. i did draw these 2 things tho, and i think these are the pieces i’m very satisfied with.
July: probably the last month of this year that i ever worked hard on. i had online writing classes, which means i just tuned the video as background noise while i tried out some stuff. it was the best month i ever had.
oh, btw, trad art from May~August is mostly lost because my main phone was broken for that time and i was forced to use my older phone. they still exist, just not saved onto my device.
August: made during the writing class. i’m not very happy with this, but i was trying to do something. maybe the fact i didn’t have a clear vision of WHAT, was blocking me from what i wanted to do.
oh, there are these things too. hi guys, hope sunlight wasn’t too dear to you.
September: i surprise myself more and more. i did draw characters a lot! but that wasn’t what i wanted for this whole year. i wanted to draw cartoons. characters living. talking. i just captured their souls behind a dead, white, background.

it took me 13 days to break and make sans x shelby art SJWKDJWJ anyway. shelby doesn't meet him pre-corruption but whatever i think they're cute

I HATE THIS DRAWING RAAAA but ely likes asking to do his nails ^_^ even tho theyre terrible at it but he doesnt mind :3c

ok uhh my bad this isn't oc x canon LOL. but... erfi and ana... have a lot of angst like halfway/early in their arc bc erfi sees her as a beacon of light/savior, especially due to her current relationship with the ppl in her life.................... they get better dw!!! ad goes through a similar arc so i think that was how i tied it into the oc x canon promptlist LMAO

THAT ONE THING I POSTED!! yes it was a shelby x error thing. i was listening to pick up the phone by fir at the time, which like, its not the errorshelby dynamic at all they're not toxic, but. the vibes... in the fic after shelby leaves the anti void he has a massive crisis... thats what the drawing is...

companion post to the last one (art over time of peach) (long image heavy post as well)
THEEE original design. straight up based on a plushie i have that was a comfort item of mine for a long time. the only time i ever drew him like this bc it kind of sucked to do and i didnt want to draw the fur like that all the time
anthro designs for him... i never managed to pin down a colour scheme for him so always just sketches or id colour him in a light purple so it looked a bit more done. which is why he ended up with a purple design when i started drawing her proper. i remember really liking the face shape i drew in that middle sketch in the first image which is crazy to look at now... also bonus old jane art too!
the second colour image is a direct redraw of the first btw... literally one year and one day apart. crazy
THEEE FIRST OFFICIAL REDESIGN! i decided to lean into the purple and figured out a bit of patterning and colours for her. this was THE blueprint for a long time... i fiddled with minor details but she stayed mostly the same for a few years. these two images nearly a year apart
shitty little sketch as well but i think my first time i decided to draw him with fangs. and longer neck (always an alt design but i never drew bc im bad at drawing furs with long necks)
up until the most recent version of this design for him... im still fond of it but i honestly got bored of drawing him this way. purple one of my least favourite colours and it was always a bit of a cop-out design, and i started having more fun drawing him looking a little weirder (comparatively LOL). second image i think the last time i drew him this design from may this year...
+ the most current redesign... what he looks like as of june? and most current art. leaned into his fangs and stuff and decided to make her officially a hybrid rather than just a kind of weird llamathing... so hes a llama-hyena. i think i did a decent job of mixing features. and the colours were supposed to be one test and i was going to try out different colours and patterns but i ended up really liking it... i will probably fiddle with it a lot and change them again but for now this is what he looks like
