I finally finished my Victorian Wrapper Dress!

The pattern is the Misses' Wrapper Summer 1893, from Authentic Victorian Fashion Patterns, edited by Kristina Harris. My gosh was it a doozy to follow! The pattern itself had very little instruction, so I had to search for more information elsewhere (which i will link if i remember where because i printed stuff).

I used some bedsheets, nonstretch 100% cotton, and made about 3 or so mockups and still found issues upon making the final version

Noted Issues:

It says to draft based on bust. if you have a large bust but not broad shoulders, only extend the should piece over by half of what you extend the bust by

Locks of tricky placement i needed to think quite a bit about

Should have added buttons on the wrists

Had to figure out the.math for my own ruffles (i did a 2 times multiplaction since i worked with a thin fabric)

i needed to axpand the armhole, and thus the sleeves. Do Not expand the poof part, expand the under part of the arm scye, that's where you need the space.

I may add a button closure on the front as well since it gapes a bit

being just over 5 foot, i did not need to add any height to the dress. at all.

to bind my arm scye i used bias tape!

Overall though? I really enjoyed making this, it took me roughly a month and a half to hand-sew, and i enjoyed myself incredibly!!!!

So understandably, Shaw’s relationship with his family isn’t exactly great? Before the death of his daughter, Shaw was a good husband and father - something that I feel is really important to stress in order to like, understand his character. He did genuinely put his family first and did all he could to make sure Lenore & Everett got the best shot in life that they could, which in his eyes revolved around getting a good education. He thus blames himself for Lenore’s death, as she killed soon after accepting an offer to go study in the Neath come the following autumn. After that he fell apart mentally, into a really bad spiral of depression. After shutting everyone out for months, barely being present… he got up and left to get revenge, with very little warning or communication - so yeah, his family isn’t exactly happy with him. To the point where Vivian wanted nothing to do with him until Lenore’s killer had been dealt with - and now that he *is* dead things aren’t exactly gonna get better.

Shaw’s definition of family revolves around the idea of people you trust more than anything. Which is pretty normal considering everything else.

Inveterate - Is there a habit, good or bad, that they just can’t break?

Everything in this man’s life is a habit he can’t break!!! All of it!! The endless self pitying martyr complex! The drugs! The lack of sleep! The ‘picking up random 20-somethings to grow hopelessly attached to’! The hunt for adrenaline that he then immediately self flaggilates for! Shaw is made of bad habits and knowledge of linguistics. He is 35% compulsion by volume.

If you want a mechanically based answer he’s literally never passed on the City Vices: Orthographic Infection card… eveeeer? It sent him to the Beth at least twice. Probably more.

absquatulate- what does it take to make them run away from a fight?

twitch is super reckless so it takes a Lot to make them run from a fight. plus, since death in the neath is so impermanent, even dying isn't much of a deterrent for them. if there's a 1% chance they think they can win, they're giving it a shot. and since they're so cocky about it their idea of "yeah i can totally win this" is usually not exactly realistic.

if permadeath is a big possibility, though, they Will run. they're not fucking with that! as it stands, the sacristan is the only. person (???? thing???) they will run from before a fight even starts. they were totally onboard and overconfident about fighting it when they thought it was just a really big guy. once they realised what was actually going on, though?? no way. they know that thing is gonna kill them immediately and For Good. they're Outta there.

and for grace,,

it's not exactly a surprise to anyone but he's not much of a fighter (or any kind of conflict, really.) but he's also not a coward...so he doesn't often run from fights. he's more the type to back down, play it passive/defensive and try and deescalate a situation before it turns into a fight. unlike twitch who will stab you Immediately, if you try to swordfight him he is parrying it until either the other person backs down or he's forced to fight back.

apparently this doesn't apply if he's in Emotional Overdrive tho. rip that one guy in the arctic and that one cage gardens keeper from nemesis

but, very real threat of death/severe injury will make him run away point blank. if there's more than one guy trying to fight him, if he's clearly outmatched, that kind of thing. death might be impermanent but he's yet to die in the neath that he knows of, anyway and he doesn't really want to start anytime soon, thank you very much.

petrichor- do they have a particular scent?

twitch lives on a boat and is out at zee for weeks on end i don't wanna think about what they smell like. for the sake of my own sanity i'm gona say they just smell like The Ocean and probably smoke bc they won't stop blowing things up with cannons

grace is stumping me but i know he's cleaner than twitch at least. i can say with certainty that This Man Uses Soap. this man probably also tries to get twitch to use soap instead of just zeewater and i doubt it works more than 25% of the time. "guy who is actually clean" is the most distinct description i can think of but maybe that genericness is perfect for his "just a normal guy" vibes

plethora and jubilation for B?

Plethora - do they collect anything?

It took B a while to start really collecting things - after waking up with all their worldly possessions in a single bag (along with yknow, the other cursed bag) they got used to living with pretty few personal belongings. After moving in with Shaw, though, they picked up the habit of collecting postcards, from as many different places as they can find. It started out as a way to try and figure out where they were from, of course. Despite their cover story - being an amnesiac poet from the surface - none of the places on the cards really seem familiar to them. But the art’s pretty fun, so they’ve kept up the habit.

Jubilation - what are they like at parties?

B is the life of the party - a combination of general positivity and a willingness to try everything twice (just in case they messed up the first time) makes them a great person to hang out with at any social event. They can usually be found floating between different groups of people, chatting with everyone and no one… B’s just as likely to gravitate towards quieter people who might’ve fallen to the side of the social circle as they are to be the center of attention. Monarch of dubiously relevant but hilarious anecdotes that are probably made up on the spot. Highly recommend inviting them to parties both polite and off the chain.

I'm not entierly sure I can answer this one. this is the entire antithesis to the relationship.

What I mean is, thats the point. They're not supposed to stay together. The relationship is unhealthy, both emotionally and physically, and it is always meant to end with Jamie eventually getting away. The story doesnt end any other way.

So instead I will say this - the moments where the relationship just almost, not quite, works. Whispered moments of gossip that only the other would understand the meaning of; a shared glance between them as someone else speaks idiotic words; the turn of a page in a book thats thouroughly enjoyed; defensive words against an arrogant attack of pride; quiet, almost gentle, touches in the silence of the night; Both understadning what it means to be lonely.

There is no timeline where this relationship ship should stay - that doesnt mean there werent moments where it almost felt like it.

🚩- What is the worst thing they’ve ever done to each other?

Where do I even start with what The Princess has done to Jamie? I feel like the repeat instances of drugging are its whole own category. The emotional manipulation? Physical harm? The threats and the coercian....

well. I figure the worst still remains the actual murder, even if the slow build up of other things evening out. Killing them with her own hands and holding possession over their corpse until they return is a whole other level of messed up - and so very on brand for her.

The worst Jamie has ever done? Nothing that wasnt deserved, or true. Jamie can read her point blank, her tells and gives laid bare - and they dont always feel the need to hold that back. Pulling out their words in full force; she is nothing but an arrogant brat playing at relationships, that she has nothing and no one, disguising it behind her little goals and games. No matter how much she searches and tries she will never understand love.

And she certainly won't find it here. She doesn't take well to having that spelt out to her.
