murph characters are great because he will make a little guy who is objectively hilarious as a concept and the he and brennan will take that little guy and emotionally destroy you.

Spoilers for Unsleeping City firstly
Something we should remember about Kugrash is that he's old. The Bruce that Kingston saw and shook hands with was an old guy. He's a grandfather. He is an old man rat rat man who described himself as, and I quote, "the shit that feeds the flies"
A pigeon was in love with him. His bestie was a 30-something year old 'divorcee' widow hairdresser from Staten Island who would tease his rat fur. He sometimes appeared to non magical people as a hairy baby. He'd get carried around by members of his party. I can't stress enough that all of this is being said about an old man rat rat man.

I really respect Murph taking every chance he gets to make his character as pathetic as possible. Jens lying about having a car and secretly taking the bus while crying. Kugrash leaving his family to be a rat living in the sewers. Cody selling his soul to the wrong demon. Truly he found the best way to play dnd.

Rewatching the Unsleeping City Ch1, and there's a moment I'm always struck by in the final episode that hit me again just now:
After Kugrash eats the Bagel of All Things but before he disperses, he's briefly a man. He heals Kingston, and Lou and Murph decide this looks like a handshake. We don't linger on this moment for long, but I can't help but feel that this last handshake from the Vox Populi is the city itself thanking him for his service.
Gets me every time.

anyone else thinking about kugrash. got turned into a rat bc he fucked over a very powerful witch and triggered her curse. spent so long being miserable and feeling sorry for himself until he decided to actually start helping people. reconnected with his sons and actually took accountability for his wrongdoings. had the chance to cure his vampire son but decide to cure the witch turned him into a rat instead. sacrificed himself to save his friends and new york as a whole. i love you rat jesus

my favourite ever D20 Campaign is still Unsleeping City Season One. Like, MisMag and ACOFAF definitely own my heart and are great comfort media, but Unsleeping City OWNS ME.
And I think it's just because I can feel how Brennan is just pouring all of his love for his hometown into the campaign, and the PCs are so goddamn authentic and yet they're never too serious.
Like, yes, Kug discovering his son's letters to him is devastating. Also he's wiping away tears with his grubby little rat hands.
Yeah, Sofia's alcoholism and her downward spiral post losing her husband can be in incredibly difficult. But then she cracks a joke about being a Long Island Hair Dresser.
And the battle at the theater is gripping and tense because "Oh god what is Titania going to do to the PCs if she gets out??" but Stephen Sondheim is still RIDING A BEAR.
Kingston's divorce and his relationship with Pete give me too many emotions to condense here, and I feel similarly about Pete's never-ending assembly line of trauma and Bad Things, but damn if Lou and Ally won't do a bit in the middle of a deeply hurtful scene.
I did not forget about Ricky (how could I??) and even though he does not break my heart, he may be my favourite pc of the season based on vibes and adorable-ness alone
And BESIDES how brilliant the PCs are, THE STORY! THE VILLAIN!!
And damn if there aren't some lovable NPCs.
Unsleeping City you will always be famous to me.
