Davey: How did none of you hear what I just said? Jack: I’ve been zoned out for the past two and a half hours. Crutchi: I got distracted about halfway through. Race: Ignoring you was a conscious decision.

So remember my headcanon that Splint and Albert were siblings, but Splint was the only person who knew? Remember that? Yeah, okay, so I finally wrote something to go with it.
---
Dear Albert
I don't know if I'll actually give this to you. Maybe I'll get nervous at the rally, and this letter will remain in my pocket forever, but either way, I need to get this out of my system somehow.
I know for all these years, you've known me as the Brooklyn girl who's constantly breaking her arm and hurting herself, which is true. I am quite accident prone, but so are you! I've seen you get into reckless fights with the Delancey's on many occasions, and I must admit, I have cheered quite loudly when you defeated them. Nice to know we have the same slightly violent tendencies.
I'm getting sidetracked, so allow me to get back to the main reason for this letter. There's no easy way to say this, so here it is.
I am your big sister.
I don't even know if you remember me when I was at home. You were still quite young when I left and became a Newsie. You were tiny, but still as loud and fierce as ever, though. Your attitude seems to have stuck with you your whole life, and I'm glad. You certainly know how to stand up for yourself.
I'm sorry I left you in that house with mom and dad. I know how they could get after work and how they got when they were agitated.
I almost cried of relief when I saw you selling with Jack when you were six. While I wish you would've joined us in Brooklyn, I was glad to see that you'd gotten out, and I trust that Kelly boy to take care of you.
I'm so proud of you, I always have been.
When I saw you punch Oscar in the face, when I saw you selling for the first time, when I saw you chasing down the street after Racetrack and JoJo, knowing you'd found things you enjoy and people you really care for, I was so proud.
I hope you always remember that. Your big sister loves you so much and is so proud of you.
Soak 'em Red.
~ Your sister, Splint Constance
Albert sobbed as he read the final line of the letter, tears now spilling down his face like a river.
"It was in her pocket when we found her. I thibk she was going to give it to you at the rally, but..." Spot explained, tears pricking her own eyes as she did. "I'm so sorry, kid."
"She's gone, Spot." Albert whispered, most hope gone from his voice. "She's gone before I even got to know her."
Spot stayed silent for a few moments, wiping her eyes quickly. "...She loved you, Al. Even if it was from afar. You were her little brother, and you mattered so much to her."
"I know, Spot." Albert said quietly, rereading the last few lines of the letter again. "I know."

Spot Conlon and the rest of Brooklyn all being girls actually means so much to me and not in a "See women can be strong too!!!" kinda way because like. It just makes so much sense???
Like, okay so if you stop thinking about it as "the strongest and most fearsome group of newsies is also all girls" and instead think of it as "the group of newsies that are all girls is also the strongest and most fearsome" it all starts clicking into place.
Because if you were Spot Conlon, if you had a group of young girls who all live and work on the streets to take care of, of course you would want to have this big, intimidating reputation of being the best fighter and strongest leader. If every other borough, most of which are made up of dozens of teenage boys, believes you can and will soak them for so much a stepping foot in Brooklyn, they won't dare think about so much as touching one of your girls.
Of course you would make sure all of your girls know how to beat an opponent much bigger and stronger than them. If someone does mess with them, they have to be able to fight back. Not just to protect themselves, but to make sure that whichever idiot thought it was a good idea to mess with Brooklyn never dares try it again. They have to be able to win that fight and all future fights.
Of course you would be super territorial and make sure you don't give a single inch of leniency towards the other boroughs. You can't show any kind of vulnerability, no matter how capable you are. Being "just as strong" as the other boroughs isn't enough because they will never see you as an equal. So you choose to be seen as a threat.
Brooklyn has to be strong. They have to be scary. They're not any more violent or mean than the other boroughs, but they need the others to think they are because the alternative is being seen as an easy target. That can't happen.
I also feel like Brooklyn wouldn't have this reputation unless they were forced to. Like, if it were up to them they would be kind and welcoming and friendly. But whenever they gave an inch the other neighborhoods took a mile. Whenever they showed even an ounce of kindness there was always someone who took that as a sign of weakness.
It's not fun being isolated. It's not fun being feared. But it keeps them safe and that's the most important thing. I think Brooklyn only has a reputation of being strong fighters because they keep being forced to fight.
I have no idea if this is even remotely comprehensible but do you see my vision? I just. The idea of Brooklyn being the strongest borough out of necessity instead of desire. Spot Conlon being a girl has so many implications about this character's backstory and motivations that we've never had before and it's so much more than just "Hey did you guys know women can be competent leaders too? I know, WILD"

Spot's newsies and the Brooklyn lodging house.
So I have some ideas/thoughts/hc about this, mainly in regards to my fanfic series where Spot is trans
-Both newsboys and newsgirls stay at the lodging house. And yeah, I know this isn't historical accurate but i like to think that the owner of the lodging house was a Brooklyn newsie at one point and pretty much let Spot control it how he wants, as long as they pay.
-So Spot let's any newsie stay there, and since it's a pretty big size there's enough room. He still has the boys and girls sleep in separate rooms but he's pretty relaxed about it.
-he will send Joe after you if he thinks you or someone else could get pregnant. He'll then get Joe to point them to people who will teach them how to be safe and will keep an extra eye on them
-but yeah, since he knows how confusing gender thing can be, he doesn't really bat an eye if one of his "boys" decides to find a bunk in the girls room as long as the girls are fine with it.
-the newsgirls have a leader too, just like Spot has Joe in charge of the boys.
-Matches (I can't remember if that's already a newsie but idc) is the girls leader. She started selling a year after Spot and helped him when he became leader, she's a half year older than him and won't let him forget it but she's a half inch shorter than him and he won't let her forget it.
-Matches has a really smart and has a good sense of humor and cracks jokes nearly as much as Race but they're a bit darker. She also really enjoys fire, lighting fire, spreading fire. So Spot's giving her a fifty fifty chance of becoming either an arsonist or a lawyer.
-in my head I think she looks like uksies Spot. She's the daughter of second generation immigrants. Her family is stretched thin trying to afford for her younger brother's to continue in school. So she's dropped out in hopes to help save enough to go to a university. Her family, grandmother, and a few other relatives moved from the west coast to new york in 1892.
-will boast about having seen both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
I have some more ideas somewhere but that's all I can remember right now :)
