FOTD #045 : veiled lady! (phallus indusiatus)
the veiled lady mushroom (AKA bamboo mushroom, bamboo pith, long net stinkhorn, crinoline stinkhorn, & bridal veil) is a saprotrophic fungus in the family phallaceae, the stinkhorns. this species is found in DR congo, nigeria, uganda, zaire, brazil, venezuela, costa rica, tobago, mexico, indonesia, nepal, malaysia, india, southern china, japan, taiwan & australia :-)
the big question : can i bite it?? yeah !! in eastern asia it is considered a delicacy (& an aphrodisiac), despite its rotten smell. it also holds medicinal properties.

p. indusiatus description :
"mature fruit bodies are up to 25 centimetres (10 inches) tall with a conical to bell-shaped cap that is 1.5–4 cm (1⁄2–1+1⁄2 in) wide. the cap is covered with a greenish-brown spore-containing slime. a white mesh skirt surrounds the thick white stipe."

What's ur favorite mushroom 🍄
I have a hard time choosing one, but my two options are the indigo milk cap (Lactarius indigo) or the bridal veil stinkhorn (Phallus indusiatus). And perhaps an honorable mention to oyster mushrooms, because they have so many cool uses and properties!
With the indigo milk cap, i am fascinated by the fact that when it is sliced/damaged, it bleeds a blue latex or “milk” which can also turn greenish. Plus, blue is rare in nature, so it’s always very cool seeing that beautiful color
It is edible, and very easy to identify. Not many clear lookalikes for this one. It’s found in my area so I really want to find one someday :)

And then there is the beautiful bridal veil mushroom, which a lot of people only appreciate the appearance of because, as is the nature of the stinkhorn family (phallaceae), they smell like carrion (some stinkhorns smell like feces instead). They do this in order to attract creatures such as carrion flies, beetles, etc. so that they can spread their spores :)
Tumblr media
Personally i don’t mind the smell of stinkhorns at all, the only thing that bothers me is the amount of flies around them x( It’s one of the only stinkhorns edible in its adult form, the others are only edible in its “egg” stage. I’ve never seen one of these in person, only different stinkhorn species, but I would like to! Overall I just find this mushroom so cool for a variety of reasons :D so cool
