Continuing the tradition from my old blog (which has been unceremoniously deleted by tumblr without much of an explanation why) I’m doing daily posts during June to celebrate LGBTQIA+ pride by showcasing openly LGBTQIA+ celebrities and various content about or created by LGBTQIA+ people such as music videos, characters on TV shows, movie trailers, …

A Certain Ratio continue their late-career renaissance with new album It All Comes Down To This out today on Mute, with nods to every stage of their musical journey
It All Comes Down to This, for now at least, is the sound of the current incarnation of A Certain Ratio. Indeed, in many senses, it is the purest distillation of their essential sound ever committed to tape. Their thirteenth studio album, it is the first time ever they have recorded strictly as the core trio of principle band members – multi-instrumentalists Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson. From the moment the rattling, call-to-arms drumroll intro of opener ‘All Comes Down to This’ gives in to a wall of slithering, watery guitar squawks and bounding, rubbery bass notes, it is obvious that A Certain Ratio have once again been able to tap into a new artery of life. The record’s ten tracks present ten distinct moods, from the urgent, muscular, foreboding groove of ‘Keep It Real’ to the open, breezy, melodic synth of ‘God Knows’, every bursting moment of It All Comes Down to This is defiantly, resiliently alive. The essential difference between It All Comes Down to This and its immediate predecessors is that for this recording process, the band turned to the doyen of contemporary underground rock producers, Dan Carey (Black Midi, Kae Tempest, Black Country New Road). After meeting at the 2021 Wide Awake Festival in London, they found that Carey was even more eager to realise a full-length collaboration than they were, and the dates were quickly set. Known for his rejection of sonic clutter and his uncompromising focus on the central tenets of the bands and artists he produces, Carey’s instincts closely aligned with ACR’s desire to return to the basics. What the band might not have been ready for, however, was quite the speed that Carey intended to work at. If there is a residual darkness in the album’s sonic aesthetic, then it pervades the subject matter, too. As a snapshot of where A Certain Ratio stand in 2024, It All Comes Down to This is a towering testament to their staying power. For a band whose path has intersected with the lives of Joy Division, The Fall, Talking Heads, Madonna and Grace Jones, to now be immersed in their most creative and prolific period since the early 1980s, after 45 years together, puts the great majority of their contemporaries to shame. But then again, when you have always been preoccupied with laying the groundwork for your next steps, you’re unlikely ever to derive much satisfaction from standing still.  All instruments played by Johnson, Kerr and Moscrop Additional Trumpet on We all need: Jamie Beardmore Additional Clapping on Keep it Real and Out from Under: Nando from Bravi Ragazzi Pizza and Sophya from the alley

Antique store I was in had a 1938 calendar from Johnson Tallow Works of Puyallup, WA ... There's no street address for where it was located, but a local newspaper in online archives said it was on Fruitland Road, and that it stunk... so I would have been able to smell it from my home a mile or two away on a breezy day!
The text above (above the red "Season's Greetings" on the calendar's tear-off page for December 1937):
JOHNSON TALLOW WORKS Wash. Est. No. 1 Buyers of Raw Tallow, Bones, Hides & Rendered Fats & Greases Call us for PROMPT removal of dead stock Phone PUyallup 5-8464 R.F.D. No. 3 - Box 63 - Puyallup, Wash.
And the man behind this business was Carl Johnson.

🏀 HOOPS
PG-13 on account of gun violence with a minor victim.
featuring... joaquin “breezy” boudreaux
Whilst practicing his dribbling and handles at one of the community basketball courts, a 12 year old Joaquin Boudreaux attracts the attention of a group of older guys who are one person short of a pick up game. After being the primary reason for his team's victory, Joaquin is singled out for a one on one game by a humiliated Lionel Harris, a 22 year old gangbanger with an anger problem, desperate to redeem his ego. When Lionel loses the one on one game, humiliation turns to rage and consequences turn near fatal for Joaquin.
📞 GIRL ADVICE
PG on account of language
featuring... jarelle "kutty" boudreaux and jennifer "jj" jareau
After developing feelings for one of his classmates, Jasira's little brother -- Jarelle, wants to get advice on how to get her to like him back. Having gotten bad advice from his friends and not wanting to ask his family, Jarelle calls his sister's new "girlfriend" one day to get advice from her.

PG-13 on account of homophobia/queerphobia, usage of slurs, discussion of conversion therapy, emotional child neglect by both mother and father, allusions to ill addressed/untreated post-partum depression, v strained/unpleasant mother/child relationship (felt disdain of child by mother) and passive racism
featuring.. jennifer “jj” jareau, sandy jareau, richard jareau, roslyn jareau, charlotte king
Jennifer Jareau had always been different than other little girls, and those differences had always worried her mother. She did her best to correct her when need be, but Sandy feared she couldn't change her nature. Damned if she didn't try, though. This is a short not just about the moment that led to Sandy Jareau snapping and sending a seven year old to a special church camp, but about all the little moments since Jennifer was born that pushed her to that decision.

Put On Your Raincoats | The New Barbarians (Pachard, 1990)
Tumblr media
I'd been watching a bunch of '80s sword and sandal movies recently, and while the quality of them has certainly varied, they've been consistent enough in delivering a handful of pleasures, namely charmingly low rent sets, crude violence and a reliable amount of nudity. I'd had this one on my Letterboxd watchlist for quite some time, and figured, while I'm watching the mainstream versions of these things, I might as well get around to the pornographic take on the same material. I figured that the sets would be cheaper, the violence less graphic, and the sex more so. You've got a veteran director, a number of stars who I've enjoyed elsewhere, and looking at the listed runtime of around eighty minutes, I figured this would be a breezy enough watch. Unfortunately, as I neared the end of those eighty minutes, I'd realized that we were in for a cliffhanger ending, and this was a two-parter with a total runtime of over two and a half hours. The maximum ninety minute runtimes of the Golden Age were a thing of the past. We are firmly in the video era, when these things started getting longer and longer, and runtimes that would steer one away even with a mainstream movie were becoming the norm.
So by the end of this, I was maybe a bit over it, in large part because it ended up being twice the time commitment I was expecting. But I must note that the runtime isn't purely driven by extending the sex scenes, but actual plot. Despite the pornographic elements, this actually commits to the sword and sandal fantasy story and treats it with a straight face. There is comic relief (chiefly from Joey Silvera and Nina Hartley as two modern day characters transported to barbarian times, the former of whom loses his pants and the latter of whom teaches a barbarian to play the drums), but not such that it undermines the premise. It also helps that in Sharon Kane and Randies West and Spears, you have some pretty good actors who treat the material with a certain amount of commitment and help prop up the shakier performance of Victoria Paris in the lead role. (Spears is especially enjoyable as the teeth gnashing villain, who marvels that "there's magic all around us!", referring of course to Magic Johnson as he watches a basketball game on TV.) While I can't say this makes a case for her as a great actress, she is likable, and her deer in the headlights, mouth agape look serves her character well (and emphasizes her rather fetching overbite). Between them, as well as an empathetic turn from Sabrina Dawn, they try to wring some emotional resonance out of the material, even if I found it didn't quite square up given the patience-testing runtime. It's the thought that counts.
Now, this is a video era production, and the standards of craft have certainly deteriorated from the Golden Age when these things were shot on film and probably with better skilled and staffed crews. I will however say that the sword and sandal genre makes it less of an issue given that the average budget of these things is already pretty low (and this one has enough for costumes, sets and horses), and this movie further sidesteps the problem by shifting the action to present day through a time travel plot. (Silvera remarks: "Shit, man, out of all the periods in history, this one sucks the most.") There is even some attempted style, namely an early scene where the movie cuts between a character being slain and two others having sex, building the intensity of the sequence with some well deployed tribal drumbeats. And as a porno, while your enjoyment will largely depend on your affinity for big-haired babes in loincloths, they do gain a certain energy from the use of music, and the more primitive of the female barbarians are in appealingly feral form, despite going through standard porn choreography.

my general thoughts during black adam 2022 tht swirled in my mind like a flushing toilet. in no order
writers room and maybe mr johnson himself actually ironed out geoff’s adam origin and made him nicer because he literally murdered his nephew in that one. this works tho for what they were going for so okieee . will we get adam choking out the shazam kids in movie 2 LOL the rock would never agree to tht. wat happened to the anti in antihero mister…
kinda moe they made atom smasher n adam have bestie potential like in jsa lol.
gushing about adrianna and amon. amon AND HIS LIDDOL SKATEBOARD !!!!!! they were so so real even more so than their roles in 52 and I appreciate the writers sm for that. esp the role of khandaqi citizens later in the movie like ya fuck imperialism
it genuinely felt like a shift of two movies going back and forth between khandaq and hawkmans cruiser which I guess u could say makes it immersive
the entire jsa dynamic was so so good simply bc the chars were so fleshed out even in the small lines al and maxine (I LOVE U MAXINEEEE!!!) had they felt like heroes who’d worked together for so long. like it was easy breezy n if u compare that to the billion of quips and tension jl in the movie had like. it’s kind of wild. centering dc movieverse on jsa was not on my bingo. JAIME REYES BLUE BEETLE JSA MOMENT?
ROCK OF FINALITY ? let me ruminate on that.
shook w laughter every time somebody in the movie went “but WHO could defeat black adam” “only one person could defeat sabbac” “you’re so stacked even more so than any hero on earth adam” elephant in the room in the form of the literal shazam family with an upcoming movie:🧍
ok more on the point above just now. LIKE WTF. every time someone makes adam stronger while completely ignoring that billy is his equal nay his better. no matter what I think abt dceu’s shazam it’s still literally soooo embarrassing they think they can separate adam completely when HES GOT A DAMN LIGHTNING BOLT ON HIS CHEST. this movie just makes me angrier abt it bc they showed the shazam 2 trailer before it and god how incompetent and idiotic does shazam look in comparison to adam it’s literally so embarrassing ? can darla dudley beat adam’s ass. you know she can. be for fuckin real
cc binder checking in from the afterlife going hi how’s r my kids oh cool more to the fam oh cool there’s movies. BLACK WHO? WHO IS THAT…. villain from a singular comic beaten in one breath by captain marvel ????? slay but wtf. also where is freddy
aldis hodge knocked it out of the park tbh. so did mr pierce brosnan. hawkman smirking about I’m not afraid of dying JSNWNDKD well. sure. and the jsa kids ^_^ omg if we’re doing this jsa gimme jakeem n courtneyyyy. or r they tied down by cw
unrelated to all of this at all but I was just thinking I wish shazam never got a movie he should’ve been shoved into a reoccurring role in like that stargirl show or whatever idc
I’m on mobile idk how to readmore here just block me or kill me I’m sawry. TLDR I thought it was good fun! kind of a long movie imo and sabbac final villain was like. uhhh sure ok that was smth tht happened.. anyway. I feel like audiences will just like it and I guess its an interesting reset for the movies

Halloweenathon Highway to Heaven:I was a Middle Age Werewolf
So this installment is actually a companion piece to the previous reviewI Was A Teenage Werewolf for it is the second time Michael Landon played a werewolf
Tumblr media
So the show Highway To Heaven follows an angel named Johnathan (Michael Landon ) and his buddy Mark (Victor French ) as the pair help people, and in this 1987 episode,it is Halloween and whileMark celebrates by watching horror movies ,Johnathan befriends a kid named Alan (Eiden Hanson )
Now I will confess I have only seen two episode of this series:This one and "The Devil and Mr Johnson ,and basing off just these episodes,I will say it is very cute but not one I plan on watching all of ..I like the premise and am facinated by angels, but just not my cup of tea .This was a good episode though ,cute premise ,good performances, really a fun light and breezy Halloween romp
So why did I check it out ? Well for a big part of the episode Johnathan takes the form of a werewolf, either using his angel powers to scare both some bullies/Alans mean sister or in a dream sequence Mark has .....And it just so happens that Michael Landons first big role was as the titular character in I Was A Teenage Werewolf ....And the connection is delibrate ,it is the reason he chooses werewolf as a go to monster and there are M?ULTIPLE refrences to the film ,from of course the title to the fact Mark is actually watching the movie and makes a few refrences about the fact "Boy Johnathan you sure look like the guy in this movie " .Now I am mixed about refrencing previous roles of actors in non comedies, but I actually love this......Cause it isnt being forced on him,Landon is deliberately homaging his early film ,CAUSE HE WROTE AND DIRECTED THE EPISODE .I find it novel cause well....Landon was a big TV star at this point, with a family friendly image and back to back hit TV shows ,and here he is homaging a film he made 30 years prior .Usually when an actor gets big they are embarassed and are ashamed if they starred in a horror film, and I admire that Landon embaced this film that gave him his start .....It's just neat ya know
I do have issues with it ,the dad character is a little TOO mean and the reason Mark gets nightmares is cause Satan gave him a sandwhich ...I dunno Satan gets bored sometimes. Also Satan ,Played by horror legend Michael Barryman and established in the Devil and Mr Johnson.....Barely does anything ,so its a waste of a good actor
Overall for me this was a cute lil Halloween episode

Book 28 The Skeptics Guide to Conspiracies
The RNG threw out 366 which is Secret Societies such as the Freemasons or Knights Templar. A book of conspiracy theories about them seemed interesting, so I went with Monte Cook's The Skeptics Guide to Conspiracies since I'm a skeptic myself.
Well, the book seems a little more credible than I am since they rank each conspiracy by believability and wackiness, and their ratings were often higher than I would have put them.
Take the Kennedy assassination. I actually was a believer back as a young, impressionable teen right when the 30th anniversary hype happened. I think I actually cried in frustration when Quantum Leap said they thought Oswald did it alone. However I've moved away from that and now do believe that Oswald did it and all the mystery surrounding the assassination comes from the bungling investigation that followed. There is one conspiracy about it I rate plausible- that a secret service agent in the cars ahead of Kennedy slipped and accidentally delivered the fatal headshot. They don't mention that one in the book- just the standard mafia/CIA/Castro stuff. There is the curious coincidence that 3 future presidents were in Dallas that day (Johnson in the motorcade, Nixon playing golf, and Bush skulking around being CIA-y). It added up to a 7/10 plausibility, which I disagree with, but agree it is more likely than some of the other conspiracies in the book. Incidentally, while I also don't believe in an RFK conspiracy, I do actually buy a conspiracy against Dr. Martin Luther King, they didn't get extensively into it, but there does seem to be some substance there.
They give alien abductions a 6/10 which, to me is just crazypants. Sleep paralysis seems a good explanation for the lion's share of the stories and kookiness the rest. The book rounds out with conspiracies on Princess Diana, Marilyn Monroe, Jim Morrison, Elvis, and the moon landing. Incidentally, apparently Stanley Kubrick directing the faked moon landing started out as some wag's joke, but now some people actually believe it!
BEST LINE: This is why conspiracy theorists have decently adopted the term "parapolitics" to describe what it is they research and write about. We've yet to see that term catch on, however.
SHOULD YOU READ THIS BOOK: If you want a breezy overview of many different conspiracies then this isn't a bad choice. It includes resources to go more in depth on any of its subjects and except for a little credulity here in there is mainly a sensible book with a good dose of humor.
ART PROJECT:
The last conspiracy was called the octopus and it essentially is a grand unifying theory trying to cram all the conspiracies together in one elegant theory. So here's an octopus gathering the mafia/freemasons/UN/and Kennedy assassination all together.

“For this form of populism Boris Johnson was a perfect fit. His personal brand had long been a breezy disdain for the worker bees and “girly swots” who felt duty-bound to go through their papers, to read their briefs and master the details. He had long been a familiar English archetype, the gentleman amateur offering fluency, confidence and swagger in place of effort, experience and attention to detail, and Brexit-era populism lent what had been mere character flaws – arrogance and laziness – a patina of ideological intent.”

A Certain Ratio - All Comes Down to This - still rolling! New album out April 19

AllMusic Staff Pick: Madeleine Peyroux Careless Love
Sounding for all the world like a like a long lost Billie Holiday LP minus the scratches and pops, these smoky jazz interpretations slink languidly across the dusty nightclub floor. Breezy and cool, a highlight is the humming cover of Elliot Smith’s “Between the Bars,” adding a layer of melancholy to the already-subdued torch song.
