Hearts on the High Seas (Pirate!Tom Hiddleston x Reader)
Chapter Four: Pirates
Part4/?
Words: 1,460
AN: This chapter will have some fighting in it so, blood and some descriptions of injuries and death. Just letting y'all know. Now to the story!
(Y/N POV)
The sun was about to set, and the pirates were almost upon us. The crew had armed themselves with what weapons we had on the ship. I was standing blow deck with John guarding one of the storerooms that held cargo, while I had a sword in my hand ready to fight.
"Have you ever dealt with pirates?" I asked John.
"Once," He said looking over at me, gun in hand. "It was when I was back in France. That's actually how I met Alex."
"Wait," I said in shock but keeping my voice quiet. "Do you mean to tell me that Alex was a pirate?"
"Oui," He said with a nod of his head. "It was a few years back when his ship came to my small ocean town back in France. I got into a sword fight with him, then saw he was just a teen. He left them and then we both joined this crew a while later."
"I had no idea," I said with wonder. "He never said anything about that to me. Well, I guess that's not something you would wear on your sleeve."
Before John could reply, the sounds of yelling, metal clashing, and gunfire could be heard from above us. I held my sword tighter in my hands and John aimed his gun down the hall. After about two minutes, John and I could hear the sounds of heavy footsteps coming down the hall towards us. Then four men dressed in dirty bloodstained clothes were in the hall in front of us. Before I even had time to react, I heard three gunshots go off, and two of the four men fell to the floor. The weapons they held in their hands hit the wood floor with a thud, and I could see the now bloody holes in the heads of the two men who laid on the floor dead.
I heard a grunt from next to me and remembered that there was a third shot. I looked over at John and saw that he had his hand near his left shoulder, blood seeping through his clothes and onto his hand. I began to panic. What if he loses too much blood?
I saw movement from the corner of my eye and remembered there were still two more pirates that needed to be dealt with. Luckily for me they only had swords and not guns, John had shot the only man with a gun.
"Two against one," I heard one of them say with a raspy voice as they walked closer. "This shouldn't take long."
My first thought went to protecting John, who had now fainted from the loss of blood and was defenseless, not the cargo in the room behind me. In the short time I had been on this ship I had become very good friends with Alex and John, and I sure as hell wasn't about to let one of them get killed.
The two men swung their swords at me, but I quickly moved out of the way and swung back, catching one of them on the left leg, making him cry out in pain and fall to the floor. His light brown hair falling into his eyes slightly.
"Why you little," He said grinding his teeth. "Now you are in for it."
He tried to stand but kneeled down again after putting presser on the injured leg, but he just reaches into his pocket. He pulled out a small pistol, but before he pulled the trigger, I jumped out of the way of the other man's sword and jabbed my own sword into brunette's gut. The gun fell limp in his hand and clattered to the floor.
"Good fighter," Said the last man, his green eyes looking down at his fallen comrade with a look of pity. Then three more men came down the hall, and all of them had guns. "Hold your fire. This one can fight, he could be useful."
"What do you mean by useful?" I asked still holding my sword at the ready.
"Tell you what," The man said bring his sword down as he talked, showing he didn't want to kill me at the moment. "You can join our crew, the captain is always looking for someone who can fight, and we need a replacement after you killed Randy," He gestured with his sword to the man I had just stabbed. "And we won't kill you. If you don't like that offer, well, I know that my friends would love to get some target practice in."
My mind was racing faster than lightning, trying to find a way out of this. If I tried to fight, I would be gunned down by the other men, it seemed joining them was my only option.
"If I do go with you," I said lowering my sword but ready to use it at a moment's notice. "You will also leave this man unharmed and will let someone treat his wounds."
"Under other circumstances, I would say no," The green-eyed man said looking down at John's unconscious figure on the floor. "But I can tell he is a good shot when he is awake that is. Yes, we will not harm either of you, but you need to come with us."
I put my sword back into the sheath that hung on my belt, as a sign of surrender. The green-eyed man smiled and motioned for the men behind them to grab John and take him away. They picked him up and carried his limp body down the hall and out of sight.
"Well then," The green-eyed man said looking at me. "Seeing as you are going to be on our ship now, we need to have a name for you."
"Nicolas," I said, by now used to the fake name I had given myself. "My name is Nicolas and that is what you can call me."
"Very well, Nicolas," The green-eyed man said. "My name is James, and I am the first mate of the pirate ship "Midnight Wolf" welcome to the crew."
As I walked above deck to get to the other ship, I saw about thirty men lying dead or injured on the deck of the ship. It was night now; the only light was that of the full moon shining above us. I didn't see Alex, which I took to mean he was still alive somewhere on one of the two ships. As I walked across the plank the connected the two ships, I saw the back of a tall, hooded man talking to captain Stevens. Before I could see the hooded man's face, I was shoved along onto the pirate's ship. I was taken below deck and into a room that had two men in it.
"Oh, thank god," I said rushing in and wrapping my arms around Alex in a hug. "I am so glad to see you."
I also saw John laying on a bed, they had taken his shirt off so they could bind his wound. "How is he?"
"He should be alright in a day or two," Alex said looking down at our sleeping friend. "And when he does wake up, I am gonna kill him for scaring me like that."
*Time Skip*
(Y/N POV)
Alex and I and been sitting together in that room for about an hour before James opened the door and came in.
"Come on," He said motioning us to follow him. "It's time for you and the rest of the new crew to meet the captain."
James led us back to the main deck of the ship and standing above us, on the quarterdeck I could see the same hooded man from earlier. I couldn't make out he face because of the moonlight casting a shadow from the hood. He walked to the rail and placed both hands on it, then leaned out slightly to get a better look at us.
"Glad to see a few new faces," He said with a deeply accented voice that almost recognized. "Don't worry, you will be treated very well onboard my ship. You will be fed, will each have your own bed to sleep in, and just as much right as any member aboard this ship. As for who I am, let me introduce myself. I am the captain of this lovely ship," He took off his hood and I gasped. He looked different then I remembered, a little older and had a slight bread on my face. "My name is Captain Thomas Hiddleston, and welcome aboard my ship."

Log 0026, 7:05pm, 9-22-2019
Wednesday the 18th, I did school shit, then went to the state college to see my boy toy, i.e., witch boi, it was fun for the most part. Minus the fact I felt like I wasted a day I could have been studying at the nerd shop. I really do care for him on several levels, he's a good person. I feel as if I'm just a rebound to him, or that I'm just being used for emotional labor, with he's conscious of it or not. Not that I don't feel like I’m using him, like I would drugs, alcohol, or masturbation. I wasn't really aware of it in until, Wednesday night when I started having an episode, that was trigger by his, when we got to my house he asked again I'd I was ok, no I was not in the slightest, I try to say I fine not words were not going to come out if my maw without tears, cuss brain chemicals are a goddamn dick, so I say borderline crying I'm being held together by ban aids I can't do this right now you need to get home, then ensure I'm that no I'm not ok but I will be till him that I love him,  half the time when I say that I feel like, I'm lying, give him a shifting car hug, then get out, he fallows, and I kind of ignore it for a minute, as I walk around the car to get my bag. When I get to the other side of the car, I ask already knowing what he’s up to, what he’s doing. He replies, I needed to get out for a minute. I get my shit out of the car, set it on the ground. And he pulls me into a hug, then, kissed over my face and shoulders, and he said something sweet. I get turned on, his neck is right there, then he move removing the temptation, and I make a joke about said temptation, he doesn’t get it so I make him get it, by licking his neck, then he’s got to one up me by biting my neck, so I go for the ear his fucking weak spot, the he goes for my neck again, if some cars didn’t drive by several times I could have done that for hours. He said something like, how it’s probably good the cars did go because he was a minute away from telling me to get back in the car. And I was like yeah we don’t really have time for that. Something, something. We part ways. And I do my shit.
So, Thursday, the 19th, Did my school shit. Went to the Nerd Shop, changed tops, and just kinda sat around really fucking depressed, the point most people were noticing, and kept asking if I was ok, like wow, people give a shit about me, not something I really expected. Eventually everyone showed up hung out side and chatted, with nymph about my Witch Boi. She thinks I should break up with him. I mean she probably not wrong. But I don’t want to think about that right now. Played in Lash’s campaign, it was fab, felt good, Danny got to do a bunch of stupid shit, but what do you expect, Danny’s a weirdo. And Lash said, that I can take a few levels in artificer, which it wicked, I’m very excited for it. Later in the night after the session, after everyone from DND left, I hugged eye brows goodbye, like I do. And he looked sad so I hugged him again, then this motherfucker picks me up bridle style. Like the fuck. I, like, what... It was like fun. But brah. I'm lost at this dude. I've gotten to know eyebrows better over the last month or so. But I still don't have his number. (In the metaphorical scents, also I literally don't have his number, but I mean in like, what the fuck is up with this dude way.) He's just an enigma. Like I'm not infatuated with him anymore, which is a good thing. Not that I don't still care for him greatly, but it's not bad like it used to be. I mean I can think of other subjects now. Like all the over whelming stress I'm first to endorse them brain chemicals, might I say.
Friday, the 20th, when to school, did what I was supped to, then I got home backed some bread for eyebrows, I tried somewhat to mix up some cookies for Witch Boi. The bread turned out fine, the cookies were shit. Then went to The Nerd Shop with the bread, hung out and played some magic. I won a game using my friend, Rat’s, rat deck. 60, 2/2 rat tokens. It was awesome. Got a call from Witch Boi, where he was bitching about getting a ticket. I tried to comfort him to the best of my shit ability, to do so. After I got off the phone, I continued to lose the next game, lol though. Hung around for a bit, then Witch Boi showed up, then we chilled outside. Where chatted for a bit before Witch boi got me up against a wall, where we made out a bit. Then eyebrows showed up I ran inside and back out gave that bitch that bread. Come to find out he had an edible and was high out of him mind. Eyebrows make a joke about the bead and eating me out. It funny, I wasn’t sure how Witch boi was going to react, but he was chill, which is good. Me and witch be chill outside for abit, chatting with a friend of eyebrows, I get a few hits off of her week vape. Eyebrows, comes outside, sits with me and witch boi, Eyebrows freaking out a bit. As I’ve gotten a few hits, I’m high. Witch boi suggests food, eyebrows is embarrassed, still freaking out, he was scared he would be banned from the shop. I get his shit from inside we all go to the fast food place, I feel awkward as hell having the dude I was borderline in love with for a year, and still am somewhat, anywhere near the dude I’m with. I felt like nearly the entire time Eyebrows was throwing shade at me for being with Witch Boi. I me like, I would too. This guy, Witch boi, is just a piece of work. I leave them both at the fast food joint again, cuss I need to go find me phone. I walk back over to the shop and chat with some friends on the way.  I’m kinda freaking out cuss I don’t want to think about what Eyebrows could say to witch boi. Or if I still want to be with Witch boi, at all. So I find my shit the start heading back over to where I left them they were on their way back. Bla bla bla. Witch boi and I were going to leave, before all that stuff with eyebrows. So I go inside hug every one goodbye then, we head out.
When we get to the parking lot we put our shit in the car, then I drag Witch boi, in a hug. And we like make out, stand snuggle, like shit, cuss drugs got me desperate for touch. Then he all like do we need to make a stop be for we go to a different card shop, assuming me overly touchiness was cuss I wanted to get busy, not entirely the case, but I was more than willing to tack it. So we get in the car, go to a park we’ve frequented for this, type of shit. Bla bla bla, something, something, we had to stop for gas. We go back to the park, and we had be getting hot in heavy in his car, he had said he wanted to ask me for something, that I had in the past said, I would not be ok with, I assumed he meant he wanted me to suck his dick, so I move down like I mean I haven’t actually tried it I might like it, I was wrong on both counts. I move back up. He told me that’s not what he meant, he wanted me to choke him; I already knew that was something he was into, so it wasn’t out of the blue. I agreed to try it. So I move my free hand up to his neck, and start applying presser, and I start having a borderline panic attack. I start crying, with a no, no, no, I can’t, then apologizing, telling him I wish I could give him what he wants, still sobbing. Witch boi comforts me saying t ok, and the he loves me, and bla bla bla. He asks if I need to stop, I say I want to if he does. So, I continue jacking him off. I say something about wanting his finger inside me, he tells me to get on my back, he starts fingering me, stuff in thing I cum. He presses his cock against my woman hood; this motherfucker has no idea what that dose to me honestly. Blablabla, we get back to where were and I get him to the finish line, then we clean up some , and head to the other card shop. and we get there play some commander, bal bal bal. idk. Stuff then we leaves and he drops me back at home. And continue the night as usual.
None of this helps with my brain that keeps going form, “Fuck! I love with him. I’m fucking screwed! Fuck! FUCK! FUCK!!! I need get out while I can.” to “I’m just lonely, and he’s giving me affection, and I can touch him.” to “Did this motherfucker put a love spell on me?!!?!” to “Fuck. He so amazing!” to “He’s not really attractive. Honestly, he’s kinda hard to look at.” To “He so fucking gorgeous. He’s so much more attractive than me. How the fuck did I catch this?” Insert 20hundered times this of bullshit, constantly. I’m so confused. I’m confused, if I want this, or if I don’t. I need to evaluate if it’s him, or how he makes me feel. I need to think about it. Instead of pretend this isn’t a problem. I really don’t know if any of my feeling toward him are really, and if they’re worth the trouble.
Tomorrow, I have, a nether math test, and a 1500 word paper due, but I haven’t done/am ready for ither, but I made that choice today. I woke up remembered that I have that paper due and decided I was not going to scramble to write it, I will take the zero, it that a bad idea probably. But I needed to breath for a second. The math test I’m not going to do great, I know that, I know I’m going to do worse on turning in the home work, cuss it’s not done how she wanted it. but I fucked up. I can’t really change that. So I’ll just have to take the hit to my all really shot grades. I’m not happy about it, but there only so much I can do at this point, I can just start doing better after this.  Have a history test Tuesday as well I’m not ready for but, my 14/100 in the class tell me, I’m already fucked. I’m just screwed in most of my classes, honestly. I should have been trying harder, I say. I’m not sure, if I’ll be loud, to go next semester if I keep fucking up this bad. Probably not, I which kinda sucks.
I’ve made no progress on finding a job. Something I need desperately. But what do you expect from a worthless peace of shit.
My birthday is in a little over a week. So much wasted time. I can’t stand it, but it’s not like I have a choice. Every day I lose more time. I’m going to die, having done nothing with this life. A hollow soul, costing in the bleak. Not that, I’ve not tried to motion. Though no matter how, I’ve tried in movement, my course doesn’t change. I’m falling throw, thick gray smoke. Coughing up ash. A husk of humanity. Speaking false comforts to those, I don’t care for. I.E. I’ve vary not happy about my birthday coming up.
 Signing Off…

The Curious Case of Dr. Sludgelove and His Awesome Cosmic Adventures
~By Billy Goate~
There's something to be said for the enduring power of a Stanley Kubrick film. There's no denying his potent storytelling, especially when it's inspiring a new generation of bands to write music about 2001: A Space Odyssey. I mean, wasn't that movie released in the late-60s? It's tech is dated, as are much of the effects, yet here we have young musicians writing minor epics about Dave's star-tripping Jupiter run, raging apes, and that gosh-darned monolith. Hmmm, well if you look at your typical Sunn Amp, it's no wonder. Thing is a picture of solitary grandeur, to say nothing of its omnipotent, knee-bending sonority.
In our last globe-hopping journey, we landed in Mexico City where we met a band called MOONWATCHER, known to project scenes from the film while playing open amphitheaters at the dead of night. Our travels next take us to Hungary, a scene I've sorely neglected over the years. More specifically, we're going right into the heart of the action: Budapest. It's the birthplace of the great pianist-composer Franz Liszt, who is arguably the first rock star for taking his solo piano performances on the road, which ignited the swooning throngs.
Tumblr media
Some of you may have been exposed to the Hungarian doom-stoner sound already and not even realized it. Bands like Apey and the Pea, for example, have demonstrated that Hungarians like their music spicy, served up with verve and gusto. I decided it would be a good time to open up the window and take give you all a peek at this world through the eyes of a band I stumbled upon at random a few weeks back, who endeared themselves to me almost from the start with their name: Dr. Sludgelove. C'mon, how can you not love it?
Another thing I admire about the band is their dedication to concept. The presser they sent out was helpfully annotated with scene-by-scene narration of each track, which I've decided to share with you as I walk you through them. Finally, we're going to meet the band and find out what they can tell us about what it's like to be Doomed & Stoned on their side of the planet. Buckle up, boys. We're about to take a ride with a pair of wild men out into the final frontier.
Dr. Sludgelove is:
János Papp
Attila Temesvári
János Paronai
This is the story of their excursion into the universe of Stanley Kubrick, relayed in their own words.
My Space Odyssey
I. Dawn of Man
This is the first song off of Dr. Sludgelove's debut album, inspired by the Stanley Kubrick movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. In this song, humanity has just been born. Apes are living their everyday lives, which is just about struggling, fighting for food, and finding a place to sleep. They gather into groups -- the groups are fighting with each other, as well. The Earth during these times is very unfriendly place, with big and wrathful storms. Green can be found barely in this region and the vegetation is not very rich.
At some time, in the morning a big black prism is just appearing in front of our group at the ape cave. The shape, color, and smell is just something that has never ever been seen on this planet before. It is a monolith. An ape shows interest at once, as he caught sight of it. He moves closer, wants to touch it, but at the same time he is afraid of the unknown. He starts to dance around it. Others are appearing, as well, but they have bigger fears and choose to watch him from a decent distance. After a while, our hero just decides to tap on it. Then after some quick taps, he constantly touches the Monolith, but nothing visible seems to happen.
My Space Odyssey by Dr. Sludgelove
After some days, the ape finds some bones of a guinea pig, which are just lying in front of him. He starts to play with a piece, but he realizes after a while what he can do with it. He holds it high, then smites it with all his power. At this moment, he realizes how to use something to achieve bigger force than he is able to provide with his bare hands. He has just started to use a tool! This is also the start of the intellect, which drives humanity to reach bigger and bigger improvements. The Monolith gives the possibility of having a better, more developed life than the miserable life of apes. This moment starts everything, a pathway to the modern person's future.
II. Discovery One
In this second song, humanity is in space, travelling between planets in the Solar System. There is a base at the Moon, which can be visited by the average person, as well. Traveling in space is not such a big thing any more.
My Space Odyssey by Dr. Sludgelove
After discovering the Monolith in the surface of the Moon, a group of elite astronauts and scientists start their travel to the planet Jupiter to discover an anomaly, marked by the Monolith on the Moon. Most of the scientists are in hibernation, though two astronauts are awake during the long journey to supervise. An artificial intelligence, called HAL9000 is supporting them, dealing with all the low level controls of the spaceship.
III. HAL-9000
In this song, HAL-9000 reveals his true colors, as he tries to kill all astronauts on the spaceship. Dave Bowman, the last astronaut, decides to switch off HAL's intelligence to stop its influence controlling the whole ship's whole ecosystem. During the switching off operation, Dave needs to wear a spacesuit, as maybe HAL will try to kill him by providing no oxygen. Because of the spacesuit, we can hear Dave breathe during the entire track. This gives a sense of great tension to the whole song and originally for the movie scene, as well. We can hear as HAL tries to convince Dave that everything is alright and it will have no problems continuing the mission successfully.
My Space Odyssey by Dr Sludgelove
In the meantime, Dave pulls out computer cards from HAL's central unit, so HAL gets more and more simple-minded. At a certain point, HAL tries to convince Dave by appealing to his emotions as it states it is AFRAID! During Dave's actions, the music is heavy, a really metallic riff suggests that Dave is doing some harmful thing to HAL. When Dave finishes with the shutting down process, HAL goes into standby mode. Then he starts to "sing." This is the first thing that was taught to HAL back in the day, when it was created by its instructor, Mr. Langley.
IV. Alone Into The Void
After Dave Bowman successfully switches down HAL9000's high-level functionality, he continues the mission and heads towards the direction of Jupiter to investigate the enormously big copy of the Monolith found in the Moon. This is the focus of the fourth song. His colleague Frank Pool and all of the scientists held in deep hibernation were killed by HAL 9000 and the connection to Earth is also cut.
My Space Odyssey by Dr Sludgelove
During the long journey, therefore, he is really alone. The way to Jupiter lasts for long months. He tries to focus on the mission, but because he is lacking communication partner, Dave thinks a lot about his future, what he will find next to Jupiter, how the Monolith will behave, what will happen when he encounters it. A lot of questions and a lot of pressure on him and the prospect of the unknown drives him to depression, as he prepares to meet his doom.
V. My God, It Is Full of Stars!
For the fifth song, astronaut Dave Bowman encounters the Monolith. He says the following phrase just before losing contact with Mission Control: “The thing’s hollow -- it goes on forever -- and -- oh my God! -- it’s full of stars!”
My Space Odyssey by Dr Sludgelove
During the journey, he sees these stars as flashes, as the known three dimensional world falls apart. Time, direction, and all the usual physics does not make sense here anymore. Bowman is transported via the Monolith to an unknown star system, through a large interstellar switching station, and sees other species' spaceships going on other routes. Bowman is given a wide variety of sights, from the wreckage of ancient civilizations to what appear to be life-forms living on the surfaces of a binary star system planet.
VI. Death of Man, Born of The Starchild
After a journey through the wormhole, Dave Bowman finally arrives during the last song. The Monolith creates an environment for Dave to exist in that would not harm him in any way, making it look like a hotel room filled with familiar items to assuage any fear and appear welcoming.
Dave can't believe what he sees, but leaves the pod and explores the room in his suit. He sees the telephone and telephone book, but the phone doesn't work and the telephone book is blank.
He explores more and finds the refrigerator, where there is a variety of packaged food, but it is all "blue substance, about the weight and texture of bread pudding. Apart from its odd color, it looked quite appetizing." There are clothes in the closet, which are a bit out of date for Dave's time.
My Space Odyssey by Dr Sludgelove
Dave decides to trust the environment. "But this is ridiculous," Bowman tells himself in the novelization by Arthur C. Clarke. "I am almost certainly being watched, and I must look an idiot wearing this suit. If this is some kind of intelligence test, I've probably failed already. Without further hesitation, he walked back into the bedroom and began to undo the clamp of his helmet. When it was loose, he lifted the helmet a fraction of an inch, cracked the seal and took a cautious sniff. As far as he could tell, he was breathing perfectly normal air." He eats the blue food and drinks the water, showers, dresses, and he turns on the television.
Refreshed and exhausted, Dave lies down on the bed, turns off the light and "...for the last time, David Bowman slept." The Power behind the Monolith then transforms Dave into the Starchild, the next evolution of man.
Encounter With Dr. Sludgelove
Tumblr media
I'm afraid 'My Space Odyssey' has only whet our appetite for more from Dr. Sludgelove. Where does the band go from here?
We are just starting to dive into the Hungarian stoner/doom/sludge scene. Our first release is more than a year old, but the needed band members have just been recruited. We started to rehearse and were able to find rehearsal room, so a lot of technical problems were solved in the last few months. Now we are planning gigs more gigs, after performing for the first time in this configuration during the spring. We are mostly close to Baby Gorilla Records and bands like Third Planet and Lanterni. We are planning gigs together first in Budapest, after that probably in some bigger cities around the country. Our one year goal is to be a band in Hungary that's invited to support a bigger foreign name, when such an act comes to play here. Our second album also will come out around the summertime, with the help of the sound engineer of the well-known band Red Swamp. Also merchandise, CD, and cassette releases are planned.
Tumblr media
You mentioned a couple bands from the Hungarian scene. What are some others that doomers and stoners might check out?
Maybe the biggest name nowadays is Apey and the Pea. They usually play to sold out parties in Budapest, tour the whole country, and perform in foreign countries and festivals more and more. Their first releases were more grunge and stoner, then they delved into doom and sludge. Their most recent release is sludgier and contains thrash elements, as well. They are the best in Hungary right now.
Some other names worth checking out are Red Swamp, Lemurian Folk Songs, Űrhajó, Grizzly, Lanterni, Entrópia Architektúra, Alone in the Moon, Mighty Manlifter, and Third Planet, just to name a few top of mind.
Tumblr media
For outside bands looking to tour through Hungary, what are some good booking agencies?
There is Baby Gorilla Records -- overall, really nice guys. They are managing and representing around 8-10 bands in the stoner, sludge, doom, noise, and prog rock subgenres. Also dealing with record releasing, of course, in addition to artwork, and organizing label nights, where their bands are usually supporting bigger names from foreign lands. While we're not on their label roster, we played one of their label nights in May, supporting the British band Famyne.
Thulsa Doom Booking is another one. They organize gigs for smaller foreign bands. Also they have their own group of bands, which they manage. They organize the underground festival called Thulsa Doom Fest, which you might have heard of.
Cudi Purci Booking is a bigger fish in this pond. They organize gigs with big foreign bands in the genre, like Elder, High on Fire, that kind of thing. They also organize the so-called Desszert Fest in Hungary.
Tumblr media
What are some places that people like to hang there?
So, I'm listing some places where metalheads usually go out. Durerkert hosts a lot of live gigs in all rock and metal genres. This is a really cool place, we like it very much.
BARhole Music is the place where today's "rock stars" go to hang out in Budapest. If you want to meet with members from bands like Apey and the Pea, you will likely bump into them there.
Három Holló is a coffee house and restaurant at daytime, a cultural gathering at night -- including host to a lot of heavy music gigs and festivals.
Gólya is a cozy little place, which has lots of possibilities for smaller bands in our genre to perform live.

A Herb Grinder is very useful. There are many types of herbal grinders too. You will get them in electric, wood, metal and plastic. You is certain to get them in 2 pieces, 4 pieces an 5 songs. They all do the same thing, but the 4 piece an 5 piece have a little something extra called a screen. Grinders visit us many sizes. There are parts two, four or five of your mills. Chose the correct size for you based in regards to the amount of herbs that works, and also well men and women your direct result. For example, to possess a windmill grass four games will be able to learn the vegetable stock, herbs and spices in various particle shape. In the first stage, product will stick is ground and sifted to 2nd room along with hole in the base of the first drawer. The rooms are separated for the last point allows very little particles, the fall is ideal for the Axis! You may use these techniques to clean spice herbal grinders as well as pollen press along with metal grinders. For wooden and acrylic herb grinders its wise to only make use of the brush and warm water, as rubbing alcohol damages the wood or oil. This is the same method persons use for pollen kief pressers and sifter packages. Have you cut some marijuana with a pair of dull scissors? If so, you will have seen how the pieces of marijuana will fly off when lowered. With an marijuana grinder these pieces are ground in a closed compartment where no bud can escape and be wasted. Once done the floor marijuana is poured into your smoking structure. More recent developments include hand held electric weed grinder. They are competent at grinding control of herbs and spices. They require no physical motion. Grinding mills have receptacles that hold full spices. When freshly ground spices are needed, the unit is twisted, forcing the spices through teeth. Often mills possess a dial to pick from the length and width of the final product. Do not skip sifting dry ingredients together when baking. Practically all baking will be by combining the dry ingredients following which setting them aside in a bowl when you mix the wet ingredients. After that that you fold 2 together. Is actually important to true that in bread baking simply have to pile everything into the blending bowl an issue dough hook, and then turn it on to low speed. A quality of bread is which doesn't need gentle handling, but rather kneading as well as other treatment to develop the gluten. That ensures proper upcoming. But even in bread, sifting the dry ingredients together ends in texture. The battery and electric operated grinders work with blades or burrs. Should you want to grind a container full of herbs, then it is prudent to look for burrs. The associated with using burrs is really because last longer, producing only minimal heat while grinding, may always better for natural herbs. Green Grinders

The Church's Year - WEDNESDAY AFTER PALM SUNDAY
LESSON (Isai. LXII, II., to LXIII. 1-7.) Thus said the Lord God: Tell the daughter of Sion: Behold thy Saviour cometh: behold his reward is with him. Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bosra, this beautiful one in his robe, walking in the greatness of his strength. I, that speak justice, and am a defender to save. Why then is thy apparel red, and thy garments like theirs that tread in the wine-press? I have trodden the wine-press alone, and of the Gentiles there is not a man with me: I have trampled on them in my indignation, and have trodden them down in my wrath, and their blood is sprinkled upon my garments, and I have stained all my apparel. For the day of vengeance is in my heart, the year of my redemption is come. I looked about and there was none to help: I sought, and there was none to give aid: and my own arm hath saved from me, and my indignation itself hath helped me. And I have trodden down the people in my wrath, and have made them drunk in my indignation, and have brought down their strength to the earth. I will remember the tender mercies of the Lord, the praise of the Lord for all the things that the Lord hath bestowed on us.
EXPLANATION Once more the prophet's words point to the Saviour, and describe His triumphal entrance into Jerusalem, where He went to accomplish the work of redemption, which He had always in His heart and before His eyes; he refers to His victories over all His enemies, the world, and the devil, whom He had trampled on and destroyed as the wine-presser does the grapes. The day of Christ's death was also the day of vengeance on His enemies, whom He overcame on the cross. The prophet who foresaw all this, thanks God in the last words of this lesson, and we also are called upon to thank Christ for our Redemption.
THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
ACCORDING TO ST. LUKE, CHAP. XXII. AND XXIII.
At that time, The feast of unleavened bread, which is called the Pasch, was at hand. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put Jesus to death; but they feared the people. And Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, one of the twelve; and he went, and discoursed with the chief priests and the magistrates, how he might betray him to them. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. And he promised; and he sought opportunity to betray him in the absence of the multitude. And the day of the unleavened bread came, on which it was necessary that the Pasch should be killed. And he sent Peter and John, saying: Go and prepare for us the Pasch, that we may eat. But they said: Where wilt thou that we prepare? And he said to them: Behold, as you go into the city, there shall meet you a man carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in, and you shall say to the good man of the house: The master saith to thee: Where is the guest-chamber, where I may eat the Pasch with my disciples? And he will show you a large dining-room furnished; and there prepare. And they going, found as he had said to them, and made ready the Pasch. And when the hour was come, he pat down, and the twelve apostles with him. And he said to them: With desire I have desired to eat this Pasch with you before I suffer. For I say to you, that from this time I will not eat it, till it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And having taken the chalice he gave thanks, and said: Take and divide it among you. For I say to you that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, till the kingdom of God come. And taking bread, he gave thanks, and brake, and gave to them, saying: This is my body, which is given for you: do this for a commemoration of me. In like manner the chalice also, after he had supped, saying: This is the chalice, the new testament of my blood, which shall be shed for you. But yet behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. And the Son of man, indeed goeth, according to that which is determined; but yet woe to that man by whom he shall be betrayed. And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. And there was also a strife amongst them, which of them should seem to be greater. And he said to them: The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that have power over them, are called beneficent. But you not so; but he that is the greater among you, let him become as the younger; and he that is the leader, as he that serveth. For which is greater, he that sitteth at table, or he that serveth? Is not he that sitteth at table? but I am in the midst of you, as he that serveth; and you are they who have continued with me in my temptations. And I dispose to you, as my Father hath disposed to me, a kingdom: that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom; and may sit upon thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And the Lord said: Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for thee that thy faith fail not: and thou being once converted, confirm thy brethren. Who said to him: Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison and to death. And he said: I say to thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, till thou thrice deniest that thou knowest me. And he said to them: When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, did you want anything? But they said: Nothing. Then said he unto them: But now he that hath a purse, let him take .it, and likewise a scrip; and he that hath not, let him sell his coat and buy a sword. For I say to you, that this that is written must yet be fulfilled in me: And he was reckoned among the wicked: for the things concerning me have an end. But they said: Lord, behold here are two swords And he said to them: It is enough. And going out he went according to his custom to the Mount of Olives. And his disciples also followed him. And when he was come to the place, he said to them: Pray, lest ye enter into temptation. And he was withdrawn away from them a stone's cast; and kneeling down he prayed, saying: Father, if thou wilt, remove this chalice from me; but yet not my will, but thine be done. And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony, he prayed the longer. And his sweat became as drops of blood trickling down upon the ground. And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow. And he said to them: Why sleep you? Arise, pray, lest you enter into temptation. As he was yet speaking, behold a multitude; and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near to Jesus to kiss him. And Jesus said to him: Judas, dost thou betray the Son of Man with a kiss? And they that were about him, seeing what would follow, said to him: Lord, shall we strike with the sword? And one of them struck the servant of the high-priest, and cut off his right ear. But Jesus answering, said: Suffer ye thus far. And when he had touched his ear, he healed him. And Jesus said to the chief priests and the magistrates of the temple, and the ancients that were come unto him: Are you come out, as it were against a thief, with swords and clubs? When I was daily with you in the temple, you did not stretch forth your hands against me; but this is your hour, and the power of darkness. And apprehending him, they led him to the high-priest's house; but Peter followed afar off. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were sitting about it, Peter was in the midst of them. Whom when a certain servant maid had seen him sitting at the light, and had earnestly beheld him, she said: This man also was with him. But he denied, saying: Woman, I know him not. And after a little while, another seeing him, said: Thou also art one of them. But Peter said: O man, I am not. And after the space as it were of one hour, another certain man affirmed, saying: Of a truth this man was also with him; for he is also a Galilean. And Peter said: Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, as he was yet speaking, the cock crew. And the Lord turning looked on Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, as he had said: Before the cock crow, thou shaft deny me thrice. And Peter going out wept bitterly. And the men that held him, mocked him, and struck him. And they blind-folded him, and smote him on the face. And they asked him, saying: Prophesy, who is it that struck thee? And many other things blaspheming, they said against him. And as soon as it was day, the ancients of the people, and the chief priests, and scribes, came together, and they brought him into their council, saying: If thou be the Christ, tell us. And he said to them: If I shall tell you, you will not believe met and if I shall also ask you, you will not answer, me, nor let me go. But hereafter the Son of man shall be sitting on the right hand of the power of God. Then said they all: Art thou then the Son of God? Who said: You say that I am. And they said: What need we any further testimony? For we ourselves have heard it from his own mouth. (Chap. XXIII.) And the whole multitude of them rising up, led him to Pilate. And they began to accuse him, saying: We have found this man perverting our nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he is Christ the king. And Pilate asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Jews? But he answering, said: Thou sayest it. And Pilate said to the chief priests and to the multitudes: I find no cause in this man. But they were more earnest, saying: He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place. But Pilate hearing Galilee, asked if the man were of Galilee? And when he understood that he was of Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him away to Herod, who himself was also at Jerusalem in those days. And Herod seeing Jesus was very glad, for he was desirous of a long time to see him, because he had heard many things of him: and he hoped to see some sign wrought by him. And he questioned him with many words. But he answered him nothing. And the chief priests and the scribes stood by, earnestly accusing him. And Herod with his army set him at nought, and mocked him, putting on him a white garment, and sent him back to Pilate. And Herod and Pilate were made friends that same day: for before they were enemies one to another. Then Pilate calling together the chief priests, and the magistrates, and the people, said to them: You have brought this man to me as one that perverteth the people, and behold I, having examined him before you, find no cause in this man touching those things wherein you accuse him. No, nor Herod neither. For I sent you to him, and behold nothing worthy of death is done to him. I will chastise him, therefore, and release him. Now of necessity he was to release unto them one upon the feast day. But the whole multitude together cried out at once, saying: Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas, who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for a murder, was cast into prison. And Pilate again spoke to them, desiring to release Jesus. But they cried out again, saying: Crucify him, crucify him. And he said to them the third time: Why, what evil hath this man done? I find no cause of death in him. I will chastise him therefore, and let him go. But they were instant with loud voices requiring that he might be crucified; and their voices prevailed. And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required. And he released unto them him who for murder and sedition had been cast into prison, whom they had desired: but Jesus he delivered up to their will. And as they led him away, they laid hold of one Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country; and they laid the cross on him to carry after Jesus. And there followed him a great multitude of people and of women, who bewailed, and lamented him. , But Jesus turning to them, said: Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not over me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. For behold the days shall came, wherein they will say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the paps that have not given suck. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains: Fall upon us; and to the hills, Cover us. For if in the green wood, they do these things, what shall be done in the dry? And there were also two other malefactors led with him, to be put to death. And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, they crucified him there; and the robbers, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, far they know not what they do. But they dividing his garments cast lots. And the people stood beholding, and the rulers with them derided him, saying: He saved others, let him save himself, if he be Christ, the elect of God. And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, and saying: If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. And there was also a superscription written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin and Hebrew: This is the King of the Jews. And one of those robbers who were hanged, blasphemed him, saying: If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering, rebuked him, saying: neither dost thou fear God, seeing thou art under the same condemnation. And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done no evil. And he said to Jesus: Lord, remember me when thou shalt come into thy kingdom. And Jesus said to him: Amen, I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise. And it was almost the sixth hour; and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened; and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And Jesus crying out with a loud voice, said: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And saying this, he gave up the ghost. (Here all kneel and pause.) Now the centurion seeing what was done, glorified God, saying: Indeed this was a just man. And all the multitude of them that were come together to that sight, and saw the things that were done, returned striking their breast. And all his acquaintance, and the women that had followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things. And behold there was a man named Joseph, who was a counsellor, a good and a just man, (the same had not consented to their counsel and doings,) of Arimathea, a city of Judea, who also himself looked for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and begged the body of Jesus. And taking him down he wrapped him in fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre that was hewed in stone, wherein never yet any man had been laid.

Awakening of the Death Chapter #10
First Chapter Previous chapter Next Chapter
Jack returned to the apartments where he took Hellen to her room and laid her upon the bed. She was still holding the table cloth, and noticed that she fell asleep in his arms minutes before. Jack went over to Hellen’s presser and pulled out a long sleeve shirt that looked loose enough for her to sleep in. He went back to the bed and sat next to her, with her back towards him. Jack didn’t want Hellen to lay half naked in shame, yet he never wanted to invade her territory of privacy.
Still facing Hellen’s back, Jack gently lifted her body, the tablecloth slipped down; yet Jack had to focus on something to keep his focus. He noticed Hellen’s left ear, and decided to look upon that as he helped her get into a shirt. His stomach sank as he noticed how torn it was, with small long white scars in the back as if an animal tied biting her. When he finished putting on her shirt, Jack laid her upon the pillow, his hand supporting her head. Yet as he looked upon her. Jack hated seeing a strong woman like Hellen being broken and realized she had always been broken just from since her father, Jeremiah's death.
As he moved his hand away from underneath, Jack traced the torn ear with his two fingers, feeling the rough edges. But the feeling must of caused Hellen great alertness as she stood upward and alert as she punched Jack in the face, breathing heavily.
“What the hell ere you doing?” Hellen screamed.
Jack rubbed his cheek where Hellen punched him. He looked up to say “I was only hel...”
“Just because you took me out of that hellish nightmare don’t give you the damn right to try and fuck me...” Hellen’s eyes watered with hot tears again. She rubbed them quickly.
Jack tried to talk to her but she refused but throwing a book at him. "Stay away from me!" Jack dodged the book and looked at Hellen. He only nodded and left the room. When after he shut the door, he heard the door being locked from Hellen’s side.
Jack lowered himself to the floor and rubbed his face. He thought about the days events, and what had almost happened to her. He clearly understood the phycological hell that she was possibly facing now. A feeling Jack knew too well. As he opened his eyes, Jack noticed a trail of red across his chest. Blood trailed out from his torn jacket exposing his chest, showing a long thin would that he must of received from Johnathan when fighting him off from Hellen. As Jack removed his jacket and cleaned his wounds, he understood why he felt Hellen’s pain inside out. He remembered the feeling of her hot salty tears streaming together into his wound as blood came pouring out slowly, merging into a river of sorrow of blood in the tears of two broken souls. As Jack looked at his hands, he vowed to himself that he would not go near her unless she requests to, or completely necessary.
The following days were long and hard for Hellen, for Jack would try to get her to come out of her room, only to have her yelling at him to leave. Still, he would leave food for her, to his relief she would always take it and leave the dishes out. She would occasionally come out to clean up and use the lavatory, but barely talked to Jack but only two words.
As for the jacket and the laundry, he took the bundle of clothes to the wash lady  few doors down, and when she saw his torn jacket, she insisted that she’d repair it free of charge. When Jack mentioned that he didn’t had other clothes, she lended him some of her son’s clothes that he never used anymore. “White has always been an appalling color to him.” She told Jack. “I think it makes a man look pure and intimidating if you ask me.” She took a sniff of his jacket, the woman almost gagged. “Merciful Lord above, when was the last you washed this? No matter, I’ll be washing it anyway dear. Please give my love to that lassie of yours. The poor thing, I could only imagine what hell she went through.”
When Jack tried on the jacket, he looked upon the mirror to see that the shirt really did made him intimidating, helping him sculpt his body, and was surprisingly light on him. It even made his skin look more tan standing out against the white cotton.
Wonder if Hellen would like it? He thought as he touched the mirror.
One day however, Jack notice Hellen didn't came out from her room to get the dishes of food he left for her. Concerned, Jack knocked on the door, he didn't hear Hellen saying anything, but he was sure Hellen heard him. Jack feeling something is wrong with her. He lightly turned the handle, only to find it still locked. So he climb up the roof from the outside and went to her window to open it, and he did with success.
He found Hellen was sleep at her bed. She covering all her body with a heavy blanket. Jack walk close to her, he saw her face is very red and sweaty; Her breathing labored. He put his hand to her forehead. The skin was so hot that it heated his fingers inches away from her skin to his. Hellen was in a high fever.
Jack clenched his fist. That damn freak! Hellen didn’t deserve this! It was clear that Hellen was in high stressed, she must of gotten sick over the week since the attempted rape.
He found the skeleton key that opened the bedroom the door and brought a small towel, a bowl filled with icy water, and a glass of water to drink. Jack returned to the room and sat on a stool next to Hellen. He dipped the towel into icy water and compressed to her forehead to reduce her heat, as if tending a sick child in bed. Leading to memories of his mother when she tended to him
Hellen needs some nutrition for fight the virus, Jack was thought. He went to the kitchen and made some hot tea. He brought it back to the room and aided Hellen, trying to get her to drink.
Jack was extremely gentle with her, as he held her head and tried to make Hellen drink the tea. She coughed as the tea nearly choked her. "Easy now, you’ll be fine, Hellen. I got you now." Jack whispering while he tried again to get her to drink. Jack tried again until she drink all of the tea, stroking the auburn hair. It was so soft to the touch as his fingers followed the curves of each curl.
"You need this drink to recover, Hellen. Come on! Don't let me fail you now!" Jack pleaded quietly while he keep hold Hellens head. Hellen groaned; yet she knew she had to drink it. She grabs his hand for support as she drank the remaining tea, feeling his callused hands, gripping into his fingers for dear life as she gazed at him in a feverish look as she fell asleep.
Jack heard someone's knocked the front door. He let go of Hellen’s hand and he walk over to open the door. He saw two of men from the Dark Horses standing there, looking bloody from a beating. "What is it...?" Jack ask. "It's David, boss! David! Johnathan’s bother! He came into our headquarters and started killed a couple of our friends there! He was looking for you Jack. Help us!"
Jack clenched his fist. “Damn it” He cursed. “Hold on, I’ll be right there, keep the men away from him and the locals inside their homes.”
He back inside to grab his hidden blade and a few knifes. He saw Hellen asleep in the bed still. He covering her with a blanket and stroke hr cheek feeling the heat of her head. "I will be back before nightfall." He leave a some of bread on bed side table in case if Hellen hungry. Then he took his robes from when the laundry lady repaired it and ran to the headquarters.
David was screaming a war cry as he killed another member of the Dark Horses, his hands, chest, and face was covered in blood. He killed two of rooks with a force vengeance as they tried to restrain him in vain.
"Where is your boss now huh?” He yelled. “Tell me where he is! I challenge him to a fight!" His eyes were full of rage and revenge. Other members tried to stop him; but he would kill them off. He grabbed a young woman who was a member, turned her back to his chest and placed his knife to her throat. "I will give you more 5 minutes, if you cannot bring your leader here now, I will kill this bitch! And I will kill every rooks here on every 5 minutes of him being absent!"
Jack watched him from above the rooftop of a building, he took a leap of faith into a haystack and merged himself out.
“Let the girl go. I am here. I will except your challenge.
The woman chocked when David tightened his grip around her “You killed my brother you son of a bitch! I will avenge him now. But he needs a  woman! This seems like a candidate for the afterlife bride for him” David move his hand to slice her throat, but before it happen, Jack grabbed his hand. David saw Jack glared at him viciously. Jack twisted his hand to the area which impossible for hand reach, locked his hand from behind. David cried out, feeling the pain, he drop the knife and let lose of the grip on the woman, she stumbled out of the way and looked at amazement as Jack threatens David.
Jack tighten his locked until the bone cracked, David screamed for he couldn’t stand for the pain. He bent down, almost kneel in front of Jack. “Who… Who the hell are you?” David panting, his sweat covered all his face, frightening. Jack only smirk.
Then Jack hit David face so fast and hard, until his body hit the walls behind him. David knocked out. All the members cheered. Two members dragged him away. Jack stood over and spat on David.
The woman who was saved by Jack walk close to him as he started to head back to the apartment. “Thank you, for saving my life, boss” She said in a quiet voice. Jack only nodded as he turned his back, walk away from the crowd, heading back home.
All the members murmured and gossiped on the events that happened as they removed bodies and various items.
“That was amazing!”
“Now I understand why Hellen choose him to stay with her.”
The members captured David, tied him up and brought him to the police station.
When they were finished, the conversation was still the hot topic. The young woman. A lass named Ruth couldn’t stop thinking of Jack.
“He doesn’t talk much I notice, but his act is really amazing.” She told her companion as they headed home. “I think I m falling love with him” Ruth’s companion shush her. “Don’t you dare saying that lass. If this was heard by Hellen, you probably dead by now.” He chuckled as he turned t his house’s door. But this woman, Ruth, was dead serious.

All hail Andy Reid, the NFL’s most quotable coach
Tumblr media
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
He’s given us some infinite wisdom on coaching, Mozart, cheeseburgers, and more over the years.
Andy Reid won his first-ever Super Bowl as a head coach when his Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers. Reid, who has been a head coach since 1999, entered the game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami as the NFL’s winningest head coach without a Lombardi Trophy. A win in Super Bowl 54 completed his impressive coaching legacy.
Reid is known for his innovation on offense, most recently with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ high-powered offense. But coaching styles aside, the man nicknamed “Big Red” is also known for his big personality.
With that comes a lot of great quotes from him throughout the years. These are just a few of his greatest hits.
Rei has offered a lot of insightful wisdom in his years of coaching.
Reid is one of the longest-tenured, and most respected, coaches in the NFL. He started his head coaching career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999. He was then hired by the Chiefs in 2013 after the Eagles moved on from Reid following the 2012 season.
After his first season in Kansas City, he gave some advice to prospective coaches.
“Respecting people is an important part of life whether it’s the person doing janitorial work or the person above you,” Reid said, via the Associated Press. “It doesn’t matter who you are, I’m going to respect you.”
He’s expressed that sentiment other times, too, including after the Super Bowl win:
Andy Reid on reflecting on the last 30 years: “I’ll tell you, it’s awesome. I’m not sure it’s completely settled in… we all know that it’s not a one-man show. It takes a team together. Not just the players, not just the coaches. Everybody."
— Arrowhead Pride (@ArrowheadPride) February 3, 2020
And for those who might be getting older and need to be composed in big moments — like the 61-year-old Reid — he had a PSA about heart health:
“My heart’s racing. I’m getting older, can’t let it race too fast.” Andy Reid with the quote of the night!
— Liz Gonzales (@TheLizGonzales) February 3, 2020
He’s always ready with a great one-liner, too.
The morning after winning the Super Bowl, Reid was asked if he slept with the Lombardi Trophy. He responded with a shoutout to his wife, which probably would have been a lot creepier if it was anyone other than Reid saying it:
Reid: "I didn't spend the night with the trophy. I spent it with my trophy wife."
— Adam Teicher (@adamteicher) February 3, 2020
Reid and his wife, Tammy, have been married for 38 years. Goals!
He’s also had some pretty good quips about football. Now I’m not exactly sure what a tiddlywink contest is exactly, but it’s apparently not something you want to do during a football game:
Andy Reid quote of the day, in any context: "We're not in a tiddlywink contest. There's a certain amount of pressure that comes with the sport."
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) November 28, 2018
As Reid and other head coaches know, not every game will be flawless. After Kansas City won a sloppy game against the Detroit Lions in Week 4 of the 2019 season, Reid said “not all of Mozart’s paintings were perfect” because, sure?
How bout those Chiefs! pic.twitter.com/qv7wq28BuT
— Kansas City Chiefs (@Chiefs) September 29, 2019
This other football quote from him about a four-point stance really needs no comment:
Favorite no-context needed quote from Andy Reid this morning: "You don’t come out of the womb in a four-point stance. Well, you kind of do. But you don’t stay there very long." Btw, this was also the second time he said womb at the coaches breakfast.
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) March 26, 2019
He also once compared himself, unfavorably, to Von Miller:
Andy Reid on @VonMiller’s athleticism: “He can bear-crawl faster than I can run.”
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) October 24, 2018
I’d like to see this race happen in real life, just to be sure this is correct.
The man really loves his cheeseburgers, and talks about this love A LOT.
After the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win, Reid said he was ready to “get the biggest cheeseburger you’ve ever seen ... might be a double.”
Andy Reid's going to get the biggest cheeseburger he can find, might make it a double pic.twitter.com/BjTeYvtPsb
— CJ Fogler (@cjzero) February 3, 2020
He expanded further on his cheeseburger plans at his postgame presser, adding that he was going to get one with extra cheese:
It’s cheeseburger time for Andy Reid. pic.twitter.com/IOblwkIDxU
— USA TODAY Sports (@usatodaysports) February 3, 2020
Following up big wins with cheeseburgers is kind of Reid’s thing. It’s how he celebrated the Chiefs’ AFC Championship victory over the Tennessee Titans:
“I had a cheeseburger and went to bed.” - (Classic) Andy Reid on how he celebrated last night.
— BJ Kissel (@ChiefsReporter) January 20, 2020
He doesn’t just crave burgers after games — he wants them before games, too:
#Chiefs coach Andy Reid gets to work around 4:30 am for a noon home game, and he wants a hamburger. pic.twitter.com/E2g4Rzgt2y
— BJ Kissel (@ChiefsReporter) December 7, 2018
Reid knows exactly how he likes his burgers. Via Arrowhead Pride, from 2015:
“I like it medium,” Reid said on 610 Sports (24 minute mark here). “It’s hard, I mean, you have to execute that thing the right way. You have to get it to where it’s perfect and juicy when you cut it open but not raw. Then a nice slice of good, fresh Vidalia onion on it. Some mayo and ketchup. A little squirt of mustard but not too much. Pickles, lettuce and tomato and I’m ready to roll. The bun becomes very important. To put all that together and make it perfect, there’s some time involved. That’s where it comes in. You practice, you get it right and then when you bite into it baby, it’s ecstasy right there, so that’s like a good play.”
Speaking of food, Reid often discusses his love for various cuisines.
In the week leading up to Super Bowl 54, Reid compared having his nine grandchildren to ... wait for it ... sweet and sour pork:
A wise man once said that grandchildren are kind of like sweet and sour pork. pic.twitter.com/4U7yB0ZSOd
— Arrowhead Pride (@ArrowheadPride) January 30, 2020
“Those nine grandkids are awesome. They make you feel young, and at the same time, they make you feel old. It’s kind of like sweet and sour pork.”
Seeing a pattern here? Reid is a big red meat guy, and as someone who probably eats more red meat on a regular basis than a human should, I really appreciate this about him.
On a related note, please know that Reid apparently once ordered three steaks at one sitting. In 2017, five years after Reid had coached in Philadelphia, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said Reid did it the first time the two met at dinner:
Lurie says the first time he went out to dinner with Andy Reid, Reid ordered 3 steaks at once #Eagles
— Eliot Shorr-Parks (@EliotShorrParks) September 7, 2017
A regional VP of Del Frisco’s steakhouse, Rich Furino, amazingly confirmed the story to NBC Philadelphia:
“Basically, when the server comes up and gives their speel, they describe the different cuts of meat, flavor profiles, and textures, he described them to Andy and said, ‘Would you like the ribeye, the New York strip, or the filet mignon?’” Furino said on a radio appearance. “And Andy said, ‘Yes.’ Like yes to all three. That’s kind of how it got started. They put all three in front of him. He put down about 90% of them.”
Reid is officially my hero after reading this story. As for the head coach’s side of the story, he claims he doesn’t remember doing it, but will take credit for it anyway:
“That’s what he said? He’s too funny,” Reid said on a podcast with Adam Schefter. “Well, I might have. It might have been for Joe, Jeffrey, and Andy. Other than that, I don’t remember ordering three steaks. I’ll take credit for it though.”
Years before that, he put down a 40-ounce steak in 19 minutes when he and current NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci were assistants with the Green Bay Packers.
“When we were rooming together at Green Bay, our wives weren't moved there yet, so we’d go out to eat every night,” Mariucci said on the Rich Eisen show in 2015. “We went to this one place, this Prime Quarters, a steak place, and if you could eat a 40-ounce steak and the salad, and garlic bread, and other stuff around it — if you could eat it under an hour, you get your next meal free, and you get your picture on the wall with a big bib, and that baker’s hat or whatever it is. Andy finished his meal in 19 minutes, and I finished mine in 30 and we are still on the wall over there at that restaurant.”
Amazingly, that photo exists on Twitter:
As promised, @SteveMariucci photo with @Chiefs HC Andy Reid after they destroyed 40oz steaks when they both were @packers assistants. pic.twitter.com/VLMUkGWMBz
— Rich Eisen Show (@RichEisenShow) December 6, 2016
He doesn’t exclusively just eat or talk about red meat, though.
Before his 2019 Super Bowl-winning season with the Chiefs, Reid’s biggest offseason accomplishment was eating chile relleno, which is a Mexican dish:
Andy Reid was asked if he did anything fun or exotic this offseason: “I attacked a couple Chile rellenos.”
— Jeff Darlington (@JeffDarlington) July 23, 2019
In 2013 when Peyton Manning was still in the league, Reid compared what Manning can do in football with what Reid can do at a buffet.
youtube
“I would tell you he’s talented. There’s talent. You and I could do this at a buffet, but he does it on the football field, and there’s some athletic ability that takes place there.”
Same, Andy. Same.
How he eats Snickers bars is especially innovative, just like his schemes:
More Andy Reid being Andy Reid: 'It's like a Snickers bar in the freezer, right? I mean, it's treasured.' #Chiefs #NFL
— Sean Keeler (@SeanKeeler) June 5, 2014
Who doesn’t want to try that now?
It’s really hard not to love a coach who can crank out one-liners like these. He’s not going anywhere, and neither are the Chiefs, so expect more of the ever-quotable Andy Reid in the future.

ProPublica: Crusading cardiologist aims to prevent diabetic amputations
Right now in the US, more than 130,000 limb amputations from diabetes occur each year, the majority among low-income and under-insured Americans.
African American patients lose limbs at triple the rate of other groups.
These are some of the deeply disturbing statistics presented in a moving and exceptionally researched feature published recently by ProPublica, an independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.
Propublica: The Black American amputation epidemic
The feature, by investigative health writer Lizzie Presser, tells of the crusading work of Dr. Foluso Fakorede, the only cardiologist in Bolivar County, Mississippi and his Amputation Prevention Institute.
Dr. Fakorede, who was born and raised in Nigeria before immigrating to the US, is fighting against systemic barriers and biases to try to save patients’ limbs. He uses his interventional cardiology skills to open up closed or narrowed blood vessels to try to restore healthy circulation to the legs and feet, a process called re-vascularization.
Presser spends time with Dr. Fakorede and meets various patients in the Mississippi Delta region, observing them as they face the potential loss of a limb, for a deeply moving long-form article about this devastating complication of uncontrolled type 2 diabetes. It is a stellar piece of journalism worth your time to read.
Diet Doctor has written about the rising rates of amputations for diabetes before and how better management of blood sugar, or even reversal of type 2 diabetes, can be obtained with a low-carb, keto diet.

Brett Brown Responds to the Jimmy Butler ESPN Story
Brett Brown spoke for nearly 20 minutes pre-game Saturday night about the ESPN story regarding a recent film session confrontation with Jimmy Butler.
The Sixers head coach confirmed that the incident happened but downplayed its severity. He spoke at length about the idea of managing superstar talent within the team ecosystem while continuing to win games, and he reiterated several times that his team is doing just that – winning games and performing well offensively when Butler is on the floor.
I honestly think the whole thing is a little overblown, but I get it. Most professional sports teams are going to have varying degrees of internal strife or conflicting opinions over strategy and playing time. Look at the Kevin Durant and Draymond Green beef as an example. It is what it is.
That said, here are the most relevant parts from Brett’s presser:
On the ESPN report and what happened:
“I have had many meetings with Jimmy over the duration of coaching him – Facetime, hotel meetings, late night phone calls. I enjoy it. I don’t mind talking to my players. In that film session that was referenced, I didn’t feel like any of it crossed the line. And if it did, it would have been dealt with quickly. So people speculating about an argument or some type of ‘aggressive disagreement’ – if it were, I would own it. From his standpoint, that is unfair. From my standpoint, judging it in the light of day, I’ve had many conversations with players over the years that would warrant that type of description. This wasn’t one of them”
On Butler bringing up his role in the offensive system:
“That was true, he wanted to be in more pick and rolls. I’ll say this first; my job is to try to find ways to make this work. This is my job. When you come into the situation with Ben and Joel and JJ, it doesn’t always equal immediate sort of pleasure, it doesn’t always equal immediate comfort. As I’ve said to all of our guys over the years, you can’t always win on your own terms. And since December 25th last year until now, we have the best record in the NBA. Not the 3rd or the 5th, the best. And since the trade, only three other teams have more wins. With him playing with us, we have the second ranked offense in the league when he’s on the floor. We’re doing okay. The notion of being in more pick and rolls, I agree with. His usage, his touches, his shots, is the same. He is in less pick and rolls but the team is doing well. So that ecosystem of me doing my job and coexisting within the framework that we have is part of the challenge. Joel will want to be posted more. Ben will want to be in pick and rolls more. JJ will want my shots. It’s all ‘2018 coaching in the NBA, welcome to it’ kind of stuff. And I think if we do anything here, my opinion comfortably is communicating. Everything I’ve said to you is the truth, how I see it. That has been spoken to my team and to Jimmy and we’ll move on.”
More after the jump:
On whether or not this disagreement was overblown by a third party or is it a non-story:
“I think it’s a non-story. I get today’s sort of marketplace where this is exciting for people in some ways. For me, to come here and speak to everybody here, you know it’s coming, and I’ve been looking forward to this since it broke, because I know what I think and I know what I was a part of. In a crazy way, I think it’s unfair to Jimmy Butler. The history he has had with other programs and other coaches, that’s not fair in regard to the particular film session that was referenced. In my eyes, that’s not it. And if it crossed the line, we would talk about it soon. I would own it and it would be fixed. So this version is, I have these conversations with my family. I have them privately with Joel or Ben, the team. We’ve already spent quite a bit of time talking about it and I just don’t feel it or see it or recognize it for the attention it’s received.”
Brown was asked whether he’d change anything as a result of the confrontation, to which he said no. That mirrors comments he’s made throughout his tenure. He likes his motion offense and will try to add wrinkles here and there, but the base is not going to change in the middle of the season and it probably won’t change as long as he’s in charge.
On keeping a balance in the team:
“I think it ends up with respect. As I tell them, you don’t have to have pizza with each other, you have to play with each other. You don’t entirely have to really like each other, but you have to respect each other. Respect always comes with accountability, professionalism, truly where winning is the most important thing. You can’t always win on your own terms. So when you have four guys you’re trying to figure out shot selection and play calls and substitution patterns. It’s 2018 and it’s part of my job. This is the new NBA.”
Kyle Neubeck asked a good question about Butler’s participation in team meetings and film sessions and how it differs from the atmosphere of having Robert Covington and Dario Saric in the room:
“He’s vocal. If you came into my film sessions over the years, it’s never ‘yes coach, no coach,’ it’s never that. It’s always some level of ‘what do you think? This is what I see, what do you see? How can we help, what can we do better?’ It’s always that. The participation in that open forum isn’t always rampant. There are some people that feel comfortable, there are some people who don’t. He’s all in. He’s got opinions. But it’s instigated by me – ‘what do you see and what do you think?’ And so all of a sudden when somebody sees something or thinks something, you know, I like it. I got no problem saying, ‘I have no idea why you would say that, I don’t think that at all.’ Or, ‘That’s a hell of a good point.’ We know his personality. None of this should surprise anybody with regards to, he’s got opinions, he wants to be heard. He should be heard. And you know, it’s born out of the way I do my job, and the way I feel most comfortable talking to you or my team, it’s who I am. And it’s part of the thing I love about coaching, the communication the relationships, the competition, all that. That’s the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
Two more quotes, first a question from me about why the team’s dirty laundry continues to enter the public forum and whether or not Brett has had discussions with his players about keeping everything in-house:
Brown: “All the time. The thing that I feel we do a decent job of is, I try to get way out in front. When something comes up, either I’ll own it, I’ll always talk to the person, or I’ll fight, (i’ll say) ‘that’s not fair.’ About Joel wanting more touches or Jimmy wants more pick and rolls, it’s not something at all that I like dealing with in front of you all. I don’t believe topics like this are appropriate for the media.”
Crossing Broad: Are you telling them to keep it in-house instead of going to the media?
Brown: “What do you think?” (laughs)
Crossing Broad: Well obviously, sure.
Brown: “Maybe at times it doesn’t work so well.”
Crossing Broad: I know you said this isn’t fair to Jimmy, and I won’t speculate on who leaked it or how this got out to the media, but it just makes you wonder how these things keep ending up in the public forum anyway.
Brown: “Think of the world, we all live in this world. I have coaching friends. The players have playing friends and agents. All of you guys have people where you feel like you can reach out and learn a little bit more from. It’s your job and I don’t begrudge anybody for doing it. But stuff moves. Stuff moves. The fact that this came out, it didn’t surprise me. The vision line I have and my interpretation and memory of what happened, that does surprise me, and I didn’t see it like that. How stuff gets out is obvious to everybody. It wasn’t planted. There’s no conspiracy theory here. Whether it was a player or an agent, I don’t know, and it would be reckless of me to speculate on that.”
On running more pick and rolls and Jimmy’s fit in the offense, part 2:
He doesn’t like DHO’s, he likes pick-and-rolls. Ok. The DHO’s are not sort of his thing. Coming off staggered DHO’s especially not his thing. He likes to be in a pick-and-roll. I think over time when you look at what he’s been put into, although the numbers aren’t great right now, it’s true, it’s where he should be placed. And so, more and more of those should be run. But not to the detriment of Joel Embiid. Not to the detriment of some other things. I think If you put a gun to my head and said, ‘Where should our bread be buttered?’ It’s through Joel Embiid and then Jimmy Butler. And JJ is going to move and do his thing and Ben is going to find his way and that’s the ecosystem. That’s on me to create that.”
That’s the money quote right there.
It’s Joel Embiid’s team. Jimmy can still take 15 shots a game, but it’s Jo’s team and Butler needs to realize that. It’s then on Brett Brown to massage a bunch of superstar personalities under a high amount of stress, because the goal is a championship, not the fourth seed in the east and another second-round playoff exit.

10 of the best things to do in Stowe in the fall
Colorful views like this are why fall is so special in Stowe — Photo courtesy of Stowe Mountain Lodge at Spruce Peak
With its world-class slopes and fairy tale-like alpine village, Stowe, Vermont is best known as a winter ski destination.
But, if you wait for the snow, you’re missing out on this New England town’s super scenic season.
“In reality, autumn is the most beautiful time of year to visit,” according to Scott Huntsman, Managing Director of award-winning Stowe Mountain Lodge at Spruce Peak. “The fall foliage in Stowe is some of the best in the world, and our slope-side location immerses you in the vibrant colors of the mountains, which need to be seen to be believed.”
Here are ten reasons you’ll fall for Stowe in the fall.
Auto Toll Road
Take the scenic Toll Road to the top of Mount Mansfield — Photo courtesy of Stowe Mountain Lodge at Spruce Peak
Wind your way around the curves of the historic Toll Road to the summit ridge of Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest mountain. Yes, you have to pay to make the drive but the views from the top are worth it. You can also hike along this road if you’re so…well, inclined.
When you reach the top, take in the breathtaking sights of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains from an elevation of 4,393 feet. Mount Mansfield is one of the only places in the state with Alpine tundra, and a hike along the Long Trail takes you above the tree line for more than two miles. From the side, the mountain resembles the profile of a human face, and the Long Trail leads you across the peaks of the lips, nose, Adam’s apple, chin and forehead.
Sanctuary Lounge
The Sanctuary Lounge is appropriately named — Photo courtesy of Stowe Mountain Lodge at Spruce Peak
Once you’ve discovered this retreat in The Spa and Wellness Center at Stowe Mountain Lodge, you’ll wish for bad weather so you’ll have an excuse to spend the day there.
With floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the mountains, a fireplace and healthy snacks, this is a cozy place to relax and finish that book – or just curl up and take a nap.
Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour
Get the real scoop on the Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour — Photo courtesy of Lois Alter Mark
I scream, you scream, we all scream for Ben & Jerry’s! This 30-minute guided tour gives you a behind-the-scenes look at (and taste of) how everyone’s favorite ice cream is made. You’ll watch a fun video tracing the two friends’ history from their first scoop shop in a renovated gas station, see the production line that sends out more than a quarter of a million pints daily, and check out the ooh-what’s-happening-in-there-Flavor Lab.
Best of all, you’ll get to sample the flavor of the day, which is only available on the tour. When I was visiting, it was Maple Tangerine, which I hope to find in grocery stores one day. Be sure to pay tribute to old favorites at the Flavor Graveyard, and stop at the adorable gift shop for cow-like bowls, coffee mugs that look like vintage pints of Ben & Jerry’s and T-shirts that proclaim, “I like to spoon.”
Solstice Chef’s Table
The best seats in the house are at the Solstice Chef’s Table — Photo courtesy of Stowe Mountain Lodge at Spruce Peak
Chef Sean Blomgren at Solstice at Stowe Mountain Lodge whips up special, locally-sourced dishes every single day, but if you want a really elevated experience, let him prepare a custom menu just for you, omakase-style.
After sharing your culinary preferences and restrictions, you’ll be seated at the best table in the house, directly overlooking the open kitchen counter, where you can watch your meal being lovingly created. Sommelier extraordinaire Tim Wallace will pair all four courses with selections from the wine cellar for a unique experience that will make you feel like a VIP.
New England Culinary Institute
The New England Culinary Institute’s student-run restaurants are also their classrooms — Photo courtesy of Lois Alter Mark
The prestigious New England Culinary Institute is the alma mater of so many big names including the Food Channel’s Alton Brown, and you can taste the creations of the next generation of top chefs at two student-run restaurants.
NECI believes that the kitchen is the best classroom, and you can have dinner at NECI on Main, where farm-to-table has been the philosophy for more than 30 years. Or enjoy breakfast or lunch at La Brioche Bakery & Cafe for fresh pastries, soups and breads.
The fact that most guests have no idea that their food was made by students is the highest praise of all. And it tells you everything you need to know about the quality, not just of these eating establishments, but also of these future chefs’ education.
Cold Hollow Cider Mill
Cold Hollow Cider Mill is a Vermont icon — Photo courtesy of Jim Courtney
No trip to Vermont is complete without a stop for fresh-pressed apple cider and apple cider donuts at Cold Hollow Cider Mill.
Cold Hollow has been making its legendary donuts from a secret recipe for 25 years, and, during the fall, they turn out more than 800 dozen a day. Have a cup of the famous cider from the large sample tank while you watch the human pressers make it right in front of you.
Bring home a gallon or two for later, and don’t worry: you can order the cider and the donuts online for a taste of fall all year round.
Stowe Cider Uber Scrub
The Stowe Cider Uber Scrub is a fall treat — Photo courtesy of Stowe Mountain Lodge at Spruce Peak
This restorative 100-minute treatment at the Spa at Stowe Mountain Lodge is the perfect fall indulgence.
A pre-massage full-body scrub incorporates an exclusive blend of exfoliating ingredients and local Stowe Cider. The apple scent is so intoxicating, you’ll be tempted to take frequent whiffs of your newly-soft skin.
Luckily, after your service, the Spa Concierge will bring you a can of cold Stowe Cider to sip in the Sanctuary. Grab a cushy lounge chair, wrap yourself in a soft blanket and enjoy the mountain views along with your delicious drink.
The Linehouse
Be nice and you just might nab an invitation to this secret speakeasy — Photo courtesy of Stowe Mountain Lodge at Spruce Peak
This underground (literally!) speakeasy at Stowe Mountain Lodge is awesome, and the only way to get in is to be invited by a staff member. See, being nice has its rewards.
It’s impossible not to feel special in this exclusive but intimate atmosphere, where Dan Hatheway holds court, tends bar and treats you like family. Ask him to make you a Forbidden Lady, and don’t freak out when he takes out a blowtorch.
Gondola SkyRide
The Gondola SkyRide takes you right to the top of Mount Mansfield — Photo courtesy of Stowe Mountain Lodge at Spruce Peak
If it’s just views you’re after, why bother climbing or driving?
The easiest way to reach the top of Mount Mansfield is to simply board the Gondola SkyRide, sit back and admire the color show nature has put on for you.
ZipTour Adventure
Get a bird’s-eye view of the fall foliage on the zip line — Photo courtesy of Stowe Mountain Lodge at Spruce Peak
Fall is a great time to experience this popular activity at Stowe Mountain Lodge, and the perfect way to get a bird’s-eye view of the gorgeous scenery.
Launching from the top of Mount Mansfield – you take the Gondola to get up there – this is one of the longest and fastest zip line tours in North America. The ZipTour consists of three zip line spans, each with two side-by-side cables so you can soar above the Vermont forest canopy with your BFF.
Strap on a GoPro to document your experience so you can relive it in the middle of the cold, bare winter.

Liberal media outlets mobilize for Trump
President-elect Donald Trump’s unrelenting attacks on the press have demoralized an industry already beset by financial uncertainty and widespread public disapproval.
But Trump has also proven to be a galvanizing force and an economic boon for many left-of-center outlets, reminding some of the last time a Republican held the highest office.
President George W. Bush and his administration were both foil and rallying point for liberal media, boosting traffic and revenue and helping give birth to a new generation of left-leaning journalists and outlets. Trump’s election has provided a similar impetus for liberal newsrooms. But there may be more infighting this time around.
Cenk Uygur has heard multiple people draw comparisons to the Bush years since Trump’s stunning election in November.
Uygur launched his progressive talk show, The Young Turks, in 2002. It was a year into Bush’s first term, and a period that coincided with a flowering of liberal outlets.
But Uygur accuses many of those same shops of losing their edge in the eight years of Barack Obama’s presidency.
“During the Bush years, we on the left were in the wilderness,” Uygur said in a phone interview last week. “We had no infrastructure, we had no media, so we had to create a media out of whole cloth.”
“Then during the Obama years, the corporate Democrats who were around in the Clinton years become even more emboldened,” he added. “The corporate Democrats have no interest in real journalists or fighting the status quo because they’re very comfortable.”
Over the last year, as divisions between the moderate liberals and progressives deepened, The Young Turks became something of a beacon for Bernie Sanders supporters. Uygur even got a shoutout from the candidate himself on the campaign trail last year.
The show originally aired on Sirius and later on Air America, the Bush-era radio network that shuttered in 2010.
Today, the program boasts a large and loyal audience, with more than 3 million subscribers to its YouTube channel. That following has helped Uygur’s team grow.
The Young Turks raised $500,000 from its audience last month as part of an effort to fund an expanding investigative journalism unit, according to Uygur. As of Thursday, Uygur and company had raised $733,000, an impressive number although well short of their $2 million by Inauguration Day.
Related: C-SPAN’s online feed interrupted by Russia Today
The first half-million was used to bring in a pair of progressive activists as new hires: the radio host Nomiki Konst will serve as an investigative reporter, while Shaun King, who is also a columnist for the New York Daily News, will act as a news correspondent.
Uygur said The Young Turks intends to cover Trump “super aggressively.”
“As aggressive as we can possibly do it,” he said. “Trump’s presidency is going to be a target-rich environment for acts of corruption.”
Josh Marshall, the founder of the liberal website Talking Points Memo, has similar ideas for the Trump presidency. Marshall launched TPM as a one-man blog during the Florida recount in 2000. The site has since evolved into a full-fledged independent news organization with offices in both New York and Washington, D.C.
TPM made its bones with muckraking coverage in the Bush years, eventually becoming the first digital-only outlet to win a George Polk Award. But the site veered away from investigative journalism during the eight years that Obama has been in office, instead devoting most of its editorial output to aggregation and Marshall’s commentary.
Now Marshall wants TPM to return to its heyday. He said he plans to hire a reporter in Washington to “aggressively pursue iterative, investigative journalism in the TPM tradition.” TPM also intends to hire two additional writers and another editor in New York.
“Trump wasn’t the impetus,” Marshall said in an email. “We already had plans to build out the edit team before the election. But Trump’s election gave it more focus, made the need seem more pressing and made us rethink how ambitious we should be.”
Those hires will be funded in part by TPM readers who have signed up for the site’s premium section, which costs either $50 a year or $4.99 a month. Marshall launched a new membership drive in July, setting a lofty goal of 20,000 signups by the end of the year. The site fell short, ending with just under 19,000, but Marshall said Trump’s victory brought a surge of new members. From the day after Election Day through the end of November, TPM had 1,956 signups; by comparison, the site had 1,316 signups in October.
“We assumed signups would slump after the election, just in the nature of things, with a drop off in focus,” Marshall said. “But November was the biggest signup month of the year and basically our biggest sign up month ever.”

Mother Jones, the liberal, reader-supported magazine founded in 1976, has enjoyed a similar post-election bump. Editor-in-chief Clara Jeffery said the magazine raised $203,000 in one-time donations in November, a 1,591% increase over a typical month.
November was also the magazine’s strongest month in subscription sales, with 8,542 new subscribers. And, like TPM, Mother Jones is staffing up. Last week, Jeffery announced that reporter Andy Kroll, who left Mother Jones in 2015, is returning to the magazine to cover “crony capitalism.”
Jeffery said Trump’s election was a “call to arms for investigative reporting, ” an area that has traditionally been Mother Jones’ bread-and-butter.
“The media is, broadly speaking, still too susceptible to the kind of clickbait machine that Trump rides on,” Jeffery said. “He really rode that to great effect.”
“The way that journalism has structured itself was already not working on multiple levels,” she added, “but I think we saw someone exploit its soft spots incredibly adeptly.”

The Huffington Post doesn’t rely on subscriptions, but the site may have drawn a different kind of windfall following Trump’s win in November.
“Our traffic after the election was several times larger than it would have been if Hillary Clinton had been elected,” said Ryan Grim, the Huffington Post’s Washington bureau chief. “We’re certainly seeing a lot of interest.”
Founded in 2005, the Huffington Post became a must-read for the opposition during Bush’s second term. But it became less associated with liberal politics during Obama’s presidency, a result of its eponymous founder Arianna Huffington’s increased focus on wellness and lifestyle matters.
Huffington stepped down as editor-in-chief in August to focus on her new venture. In recent months, the site’s leadership has signaled a desire to return to its roots.
In a memo sent in September, Huffington Post CEO Jared Grusd described the site as “the world’s premier progressive media platform,” and urged staff members to sharpen their voice. Last month, Grusd tapped Lydia Polgreen, a widely respected journalist who spent almost 15 years at the New York Times, to serve as Huffington’s replacement. Polgreen cited Trump’s election as a factor in her taking the job, calling the Huffington Post a “truly great global, progressive news platform.”

Grim said he thinks the site is as populist as it is progressive.
“So if Trump pushes this populist agenda,” he said, “we’re going to be there cheering him on.”
Grim, who joined the Huffington Post in 2009, also disputes any notion that the site dialed back its political coverage during the Obama years.
“I think we became pretty oppositional to the White House in mid-2010 up until 2014,” Grim said, pointing to the site’s criticism of a stimulus package and austerity measures put forward by Obama.
But Uygur said “a lot of the left-leaning media should be embarrassed of themselves” for the last eight years. And if the 2016 Democratic primary between Clinton and Sanders was any indication, the opposition may be less unified than it was when Bush was in office.
“What’s really disenchanting is that the progressive blogosphere and the progressive media completely let their guard down in the eight years of Obama,” he said. “They should have been holding him accountable just as much.”
“It’s not like they found their journalistic backbone,” Uygur added. “They’re back on offense now that the Democratic Party lost.”
Marshall, who found himself at odds with Sanders’ progressive supporters during the primary, said he doesn’t expect the divisions to disappear, but believes “they will be significantly subsumed under opposition to Trump.”
Uygur, for his part, said a more fractured opposition is positive — to a point.
“I mean, it’s healthy until we win,” he said.

“He doesn’t like DHO’s, he likes pick-and-rolls.
