bad times at the sage creek motel
– for @wincestwednesdays prompt: reputation
The gas station is fucking freezing, but at least it’s a slight respite from the bite of the Montana winter outside. It’s snowing; not bad enough to close school or anything, but bad enough for Sam to be vaguely worried about Dad away in the wilderness on a hunt. Sam’s winter coat is kind of shitty and a little too small, and if the snowfall doesn’t turn into a proper storm in the night, he has half a mind to drag Dean down to the secondhand store tomorrow. Two and a half weeks here already and Dad hasn’t said anything about leaving, at least not to Sam. Whatever he’s said to Dean must've been enough for Dean to go out and get himself a part-time job here at the Conoco.
There’s heat coming through the vents supposedly, but it feels futile with the cold getting through the poor ventilation. The windows look like they haven't been replaced since the place was built, cloudy glass and coming unsealed from the sills. Dean, lounging behind the counter with a pen in his mouth and a smirk on his face, has an ancient space heater pointed toward him and looks downright toasty despite the faintly dangerous-sounding rattling. Sam rubs his hands together and glares.
“I’m going to get another coffee,” he says, leaning over the counter and trying to catch some of the heat. “You want anything?”
“Epsilon follower?” Dean asks with a grin, tapping the pen on his teeth.
“It’s zeta,” Sam rolls his eyes, craning his neck to see how much of the crossword Dean has actually managed to fill in. It’s more than he expected, and he watches as Dean writes Z-E-T-A in the 41 down in his blocky capitals.
“I’m good on coffee, Sammy. You keep drinkin’ like that and you might stunt your growth, you know. Although maybe that wouldn’t be so bad, Sasquatch. Keep you from overtaking me.”
Sam turns on his heel and doesn’t bother to answer. He isn’t even sure why he came here, to the gas station to hang out with Dean while he works a rare night shift. He could be back at the motel savoring some alone time: choosing what channel the TV stays on, jerking off, taking a long shower without Dean hollering at him to hurry up. Instead he’s here, cold as shit and supposedly keeping Dean company but really just feeling inferior to the Friday USA Today. It’s understandable when Dean chooses to read the skin mags behind the desk rather than talk to Sam. This just feels like an insult.
Sighing, he grabs a cup off the wall and makes his way to the coffee dispensers. The sign boasts a signature Brazilian roast; Sam knows Folger’s when he tastes it.
He’s debating drinking it black or adding cream when the bell above the door sounds, tinny and way too cheery for 9pm and a snowstorm. A group of girls that Sam vaguely recognizes from the grade above him in school sweep in, two of them headed right toward the coffee station, the other toward Dean at the front.
“10 on pump 7?” Sam hears, and he doesn’t have to look to know that Dean is giving her his signature smile. Probably a wink too, the asshole.
“‘Course, sweetheart. Anything else?”
Sam tunes them out. He doesn’t need to hear it, not the girl giggling and finding way too many reasons to keep talking, not Dean indulging some high school senior’s heart eyes. Scowling, he ducks behind a shelf full of chips and beef jerky before the other two girls can spot him and give him the, you’re the new kid, right? rundown, which would make this already shitty night enter total suckfest territory.
“God, he is so fucking hot,” Sam hears, and he busies himself by turning to the fridge behind him and pretending to seriously weigh the differences between regular and Diet Coke despite the coffee already in his hand. “Like where did he even come from?”
“I guess he just moved here,” the other girl says. “I heard he’s ex-military.”
“Ex-military? I think he’s like, 20 years old. I heard he’s an ex-con.”
“Well, whatever. I heard he fucked Candy Patterson. You know, Caroline’s older sister? Did her behind Pop's after her Sunday shift.”
“Are you fucking kidding?” the first girl says. Sam can picture her covering her mouth, eyes widening in shock before cutting over to gawp at Dean. They’re probably going half-lidded with lust, her face a little flushed. He hates it. “Candy Patterson? Behind the bar? I heard he fucked Brianna Smith in that car he drives. Jesus! He’s been here for like 2 weeks and he’s already managed to get two girls to put out? In like, semi-public?”
“Three,” the other girl says, voice dropping low like it’s a secret. Sam has to strain his ears to hear. “You know how I’ve been kinda dating Alex, right? Well his older sister, Hayley – I heard her talking to her friends and apparently he gives head like a dream. Like, really enthusiastically and everything. Likes to make girls finish.”
“You think he’s sweet?”
“Who cares? Look at him!”
“Yeah, I’d definitely let him swipe my v-card.”
It’s enough for Sam, who feels weirdly hot despite the temperature. Grabbing a bag of chips, he stalks back toward the front of the store, where the girl’s gone outside to pump her gas and Dean is hunched back over the newspaper, pen flicking idly over his fingers.
“What’s up, Sammy?” he asks. “You know a style of romance music that started in the Dominican Republic, by chance?”
“I’m going back to the motel,” Sam says. The answer is Bachata. “Can I have the key?”
Dean cocks an eyebrow, but digs the key out of his back pocket, holding it out for Sam to take.
“Don’t wanna hang here for the next 2 hours?” he asks. “What, am I no fun? Looks like a shitty walk home.”
“I’m good,” Sam says, snatching up the key and ignoring the way his fingertips brush Dean’s palm. “I’ll be fine.”
“Got your knife?”
“Dean, I’m sixteen,” he says, already walking toward the door and pushing it open. “Chill the hell out.”
“Try not to beat your meat so hard it falls off!” Dean calls behind him. Sam can hear him laughing over the wind. He bites his lip, and doesn’t say try not to fuck anymore girls in the next 2 hours.

A breakdown of character appearances and hybrids and stuff in qsmpxcomau for @rabbit-harpist
As fair warning I can't easily summarise the eggs and don't have drawing spoons rn so um... ask me for specific eggs if you want one and I'll do my best <3
In the context of the au, 'human' means any human or hybrid. (These are mostly based on common stuff I see around fandom. but only speak English so shh). Generally for things like hair their cubitos are a good shout.
General wear is like... armour for missions, then it depends. For truly casual hours (think the Brazilians in France) they do have their own clothes - at least a few changes - but anyone who does combat stuff tends to sleep and hang out in jumpsuits. Because the armour just goes over them, and everyone is on call 24/7. The exception is the non-combat people, some of whom still wear them. They do come in many colours at least! And some of them have decorated with embroidery.
Own clothes are mostly in the region of modern clothing. I'll pop some NPC screenshots below for vibes and the like.
If they're being undercover or around civilians, trench coats, jeans, hoodies, big workboots - think like.. cyberpunk but then take all the cool neon strips away when they're somewhere they can't relax but need to look normal.

Notes for individuals:
Antoine - just... Okay you know those fan designs for him where there's the cube with faces on and the rest is a flesh coloured slightly torn up at the bottom all the way around cloak and what's underneath is a mass of black shadows? That. He basically looks like if a Mimikyu tried to make a human suit with a changable expression hat. Don't worry about it I'm sure he's a perfectly normal and lovely person and did I mention he has a cult?
Aypierre - a dude. I really like the robot extra arms headcanon I see around, but he only really uses those in the lab. Both for higher stability and to handle dangerous substances. Lab coat in the lab, jeans and knitwear (Gegg shirt is now a knited jumper) vibes casual hours. Heavy scarring on the back of his head, much like Felps', but much more obvious as shorter hair.
Baghera - is... not strictly a hybrid, but lets call her one. Human shaped, but all of her skin is covered in yellow feathers, and she actually kinda has two mouths. She has a fully functional bird beak, behind which is not her throat but a normal human mouth. Everyone calls her a high-expression duck hybrid but, um, yeah no. She has wings, but they're clearly badly stunted.
Bagi - cat hybrid, but she doesn't have ears or a tail, only retractable claws. Wears big trench coats and hats or hoods, and while out working always brings a gas mask. Her eyes also reflect like a cats, though the shape is normal. Just likes big and loose clothing generally. A strong believer in many layers.
BBH - demon. Legit just a demon. He cannot really hide he's demonic given the pure black skin is demon-only trait, but he claims he's just a couple of generations down from a demon and a human having a kid together. Big hoods, even in casual wear.
Cellbit - cat hybrid. No those aren't cat ears, shut the fuck up. (They totally are, and that's a tail, and unlike his sister he can't even claw you - he used to be able to, but when he 'joined' the Federation they forcibly and surgically declawed him, and there's scars on his hands from it). His goggles are a Tazercraft special and have all sorts of access to various feeds and tv stations and infrared view. Heavy scarring he can and does keep under his clothing. Friendship bracelet worn around his ankle and in his boots instead. Goes in a safety box if doing anything very dangerous. When using psionic powers, his eyes go red. The level of red scales with the strength of the power, unlike Tazercraft where it's just very colour or not. Roier's jacket is slightly too big for him and usually either worn or around his waist.
Dan - really was just a guy, poor dude.
ElQuackity - Scroll down to Quackity. They're identical twins, ElQuackity just prefers suits and smirking. Doesn't have scars. Like suspiciously few scars everyone has at least a couple here or there, simply from life, except for him.
Etoiles - yes the cucumber thing. Plant hybrid because it's fucking cool okay??? Grows flowers in the spring, but they're extremely vulnerable and tend to get knocked off him easily. Tends to wear a full helmet when fighting because he throws himself around and likes having to worry less about head injuries.
Felps - is almost a generic just a dude as Dan. Has heavy scarring at the base of his neck thanks to the surgery to remove the implant. It's mostly hidden between his very thick hair and his neck tattoos. This is a thing from, well, the coma story onwards. When working in the command room uses in-ear headphones and wears a stabproof vest. It's not a lot of armour, but he can't handle full and they're not expecting problems there, everyone's just comfier if he wears it. Almost certainly has scarring on the back of his hands and insides of his arms and at his shoulder from the IVs while he was in a coma. While away in France was probably in a cute dress Festa Junina style. Friendship bracelet was stolen by aliens :( (Cellbit has it though. Once he gets it back, it's always there and on display). Various tattoos you know how it is.
Fit - biologically only human and there's no specific feature you can pin it on, but there's something clearly off about him. Scars everywhere, but the heaviest scarring is around his left shoulder, and across his chest. Heavy burns, usually hidden. Prosthetic left arm, made with scrap and junk rather than good quality materials. Scarring gets heavier as plot progresses - they do have means to minimise scarring, but they don't work well on him.
Foolish - Shark thing is too fun. Little feet and wrist fins, though the head is just a hat (one he uses to cover his gills as too much exposure to air upsets them). Skin varies between the smooth grey of sharks and a golden metallicy texture. In universe nobody knows what that means (totems no longer exist, but he still has a bit of their blood in him from many many generations ago. The shark component made it stand out). His features also look oddly flat to the human eye.
Forever - a very pretty guy, but a guy. There might be some trace of something elven or fey in his ancestry, but if there is he doesn't know it. He's given up on formal wear when conducting operations, choosing stuff that's easy to run in and wash instead. Loose trousers, good boots, shirt he only needs to undo the top few buttons to take on and off - has to look presentable to their allies. Rather than a jacket will usually be wearing something in the order of a bullet or stab proof vest. Much like Felps isn't in the field so isn't taking the good armour, but given position and what's happened in the past isn't comfortable without something. Friendship bracelet worn usually openly, but under gloves to keep it safe if it risks being damaged. Has a USB stick on a necklace chain he wears under his shirt, containing both the most secret info of the group and digital versions of photos of his family. Various tattoos, mostly arms.
IronMouse - actual demon, perfectly happy to admit it. She's also PsiOps so while they /want/ her in armour, she has been known to magically reinforce her cute dress when needed for something and doesn't have time to change. Just wears what she likes, doesn't bother with the jumpsuits. If she has time to change she will, if not you get her as she is.
Jaiden - bluebird hybrid. Has the lovely toned wings, though they're a bit too small to fly with. Perfectly healthy size, just she didn't develop that trait. Normal bones, too. Does not believe in sleeves, largely because she finds armour on her arms obstructive and blood in fabric uncomfortable. Blood just on skin is her preference - if its acidic it'd get in the armour anyway. Nobody's happy about this, but like, are you going to stop the woman with the highest kill count? Off duty if its cold she will wear a hoodie, specially adjsted for wings. Heavy tattooing on her arms.
Luzu - Jeans and hoodie guy. Mostly looks normal, unless you squint too hard and realise his one visible eye is cybernetic and there's something very slightly off about the way he moves his jaw. Incidentally, sometimes that eye changes colour - and at the same time it does, the colour of the lights on his little flying helper robot also sway.
Mariana - looks mostly human, though there's light, pale cream feathering around his ears. He's called a dove hybrid for it, but it's not quite right... Leather jacket with lovingly applied patches.
Maxo - just a guy, but sunglasses. Always looks exhausted even hiding his eyes. None of the group (except ElQuackity, and Forever on meeting days) are especially neat, but Max is extremely scruffy. Likes his collars to stick up, covers his lower face with a bandana while on mission, keeps his hair in a messy bun. Keeps a locket and many changes of pairs of gloves.
Mike - pink hair, you know how it goes. Likes his bright colours and shorts and lab coats while around and about, is much more restrained when fighting. He likes having a body. A bit of scarring, but most of hs damage is internal. His and Pac's friendship bracelets broke, so they combined the beads and take it in turns to wear it. Mike wears it as a necklace. There's nothing paticularly special species wise. Usually just like. Brown eyes. When he uses psionic powers more complex than telepathy, they glow green. If Pac is in his body (and therefore using psionics to be there) one eye turns blue. If Mike isn't in his body at al but Pac is, both eyes are blue. If nobody's there even slightly, pass out time. If they're perfectly in synch to the point they should be considered one entity in two bodies, both have the grey-green-blue of aquamarines (think like when they were heisting right before Mike was kidnapped for timing). After his kidnapping he has claw scars scraped down the left side of his face, and just spots where the claws dug in over his right temple.
Missa - Skeleton hands! Acid is a problem but immune to most poisons on his hands. It probably spreads elsewhere, but he likes to keep himself covered up. Big hood, skull pattern tattooed on his face which he sometimes uses facepaint to decorate the skull. His armour is a purpley blue and painted with a skeleton over it. Does also have a skull mask, though it's too fragile to wear in combat. The facial tattooing is to cover up heavy scarring, which becomes obvious if you look closer. And, well, being part skeleton was an obvious choice. Post-plot there's heavy burn scaring reaching from his belly button to his left shoulder, and slightly on his neck. But, not until the very very last mission (Leviathan). Until then his scars are smaller. Actually has very sensitive pads on his feet.
Pac - Hoods, even when on mission. Hides in them. Turtlenecks or scarves, too. Blue is his favourite, jeans are his friend. If its hot he might wear less, but he'd much rather keep on his hoodie over a turtlenecked shirt. Left leg is prosethetic, custom built by him and Mike. He actually has a couple of prostheses of different designs for different purposes. A more comfortable everyday one, one suited to difficult terrain, a running one, one built of acid and fire resistant materials, etc. Mike makes him more out of scrap as a way of showing affection. When he has the friendship bracelet he loops it a few times around his wrist - or ankle if he's doing lab work. Prefers trainers, does boots for heavy work like missions. See Mike notes for eyes - normally brown, his psionics colour is blue. After he nearly dies has burn scarring most places, heaviest up his left side and across his back.
Philza - crow hybrid. Very high expression, having large enough wings for flight, hollowed bones in his wings, spine, and hips, some feathering around his ears. Wings could fly except that they are visibly damaged. It's hard to tell what, but the feathers are messy and he clearly struggles for the strength to keep them up (the feathers cover large scarring, but did manage to gorw back through). The hat cannot be lost, neither the emerald or the charity ribbon. He ties the ribbon to hs armour when fighting. For fighting he has a veil on his hat. He's also one of the first to pull out gas mask during fighting, because his theoretical ability to fly leaves him more vulnerable to certain toxins. (When all is said and done and with the right combos of surgery and physio he will be able to short flights again, but not as far as he used to. And they'll always be sensitive. And not until the aliens are gone and not without a lot of research.) Does the perching when he thinks.
Quackity - ducky. The little wings in his hair you get in some fanart as I adore it. Also wings - actual duck wings while the hair ones are yellow - but a little smaller than Jaiden's. Tracksuit with slightly too small trousers and a much too big jacket vibes. He keeps the gunshot scarring on his chest very hidden, though there are also clear places his feathers were plucked and failed to grow back. Does not remember what the injuries were from. Smilier than his twin.
Roier - spider hybrid! Almost as obvious as the birds and their wings is the fact he has six eyes. His two central ones are the largest, while thinner ones above and below. The bottom ones curve upwards along his cheekbones, and are a little chunkier than those above.When on assassin duty he kept to thick but tight fitting clothing. He still prefers it now, though his red jacket was given to Cellbit once he found the guy again. While Mike has claw scars which go down his face, Roier has some which go across.
Slimecicle - just a gloopy guy. Slime hybrid. As he's a hybrid not a slime he looks mostly person, except his skin is able to secrete slime. Generally it doesn't, bu does if he gets scared or stressed or too hot. Really intolerant to temperature changes - cold makes him seize up, and hot makes him unable to get up as his muscles jelly a bit and he gloops all over the floor. Despite looking funny, it can be extremely dangerous for him. Clothing he prefers things that stay cool - thin t-shirt, some shorts, he'll just grab Mariana's jacket if he gets cold.
Spreen - bear hybrid. High expression. Has the ears, but also much of him is covered in black fur. Claws. Joins Max in the sunglasses club.
Tina - demon pretending to be a goat hybrid, keeping her horns ground down. They don't have nerves so it doesn't hurt, but it is uncomfortable with the vibrations into her skull. Likes cute pastel colours, and likes how blood splatters on them.
Vegetta - does not believe in shirts, and has the scars on his chest to prove it. I'm sorry I'm at the bottom of the list and bored now >.<
Walter Bob & Fred do not take off their armour. I'll include a sample of what it looks like below. (Fred leads their group, Walter Bob stopped by once for a mission and can be called again but stays with his group)
Wilbur - he's just a guy in knittwear and jeans and maybe suspiciously pale and hungry, but he's got a guitar and he'll sing for you.

There have been way too many rumors for it to be just rumors, and the way they act when a “new one” comes incriminates them even more imo. Also there was this brazil thing an anon explained. Like a journalist said Carlos was seen with a girl or smth but after a while he said he “made a mistake”. If someone can explain it better please do!// I saw it live on TV, I'll try to explain it in parts 1. If you were Brazilian this was already old gossip because the girls had already exposed the party in the interior of São Paulo in 2021, with photos and videos with Carlos 2. The commentator who revealed the situation was because Mariana (band commentator) was telling that lando was learning some words in Portuguese because of his girlfriend and then Giaffone (the famous commentator and with several connections in motorsport) spoke without knowing that Carlos had a girlfriend, he said that he knew that Carlos had stayed at a party in the countryside of São Paulo with a Brazilian girl and had also taken her to Monaco and he knew this because his son is a friend of the people who gave the party and is also a pilot and attends events with these people. 3. After the story exploded on the social media he tried to talk and say that he had said it wrong just so as not to bring more confusion to the TV station and his son lol 4. EVERYONE in Brazil makes fun of Iza for still being with Carlos even though he is cheating on her all the time and also makes fun of the fans who are defending their relationship on Twitter and Instagram 4. If you have any questions, just ask lol

12 January 1985, Queen Headline the ‘Rock in Rio’ festival held at Barra de Tijuca, Rio, Brazil This was a 10-day rock festival and the biggest music festival in history to date. Queen raised the bar by setting a record for a paying attendance, playing to 250,000 people each night - the biggest audiences they would ever play for. Some sources say the band played to as many as 350,000 (or even 470,000) on the first night! Absolutely phenomenal! Due to Queen’s previous successful tours and their special love affair with South America, they were asked to headline the enormous event billed as ‘Rock in Rio.’ This was to be the biggest rock festival ever held in the world! The band, of course, agreed as, even though they had some pretty traumatic experiences during their own tours there, they considered this festival just too good, and too big to miss.
The festival site was the ‘Barra de Tijuca’ in Rio, a specially built site that could hold an incredible, record breaking 250,000 people (sources say the audience for Queen was Past the 450,000 mark ). The Brazilian television station, ‘Globo’ had set up cameras to record the festival to be televised throughout South America. It was a colossal event, with local bands appearing alongside the top names. Queen closed the show as they were set to perform at 2:00 AM! They couldn’t believe the sight that greeted them - they played to huge audiences before, but never this big. It was absolutely insane! People had waited what seemed an eternity for their idols to walk on the stage. People stretched from the front of the stage way back as far as the eye could see. Freddie described the experience as “mind boggling.” Their reception was deafening, and the crowd was with them all the way, singing along and clapping - until the encore, it didn’t matter it was way after 2:00 AM, the adrenaline was phenomenal as was Queen’s set!Since Queen hit the stage at 2am each night, technically the performances are dated the 12th and 19th respectively.The band give very solid performances on both nights, and Freddie sounds especially fantastic in the first night. After singing "I still love you" in ‘Love Of My Life,’ Freddie passionately shouts, "And don't you forget it!" The fans went over the top crazy! You know they took over the song too. Brian May used an EBow off the top of his solo spot for the first time since 1978. Before singing the first verse he turns around and reveals a Brazilian flag embroidered to it, prompting a huge roar from the audience. At the end of the concert, he tosses the flag into the audience. James Taylor played the following night, and his bassist, Leland Sklar, had this to say about Queen's performance in a 2018 Bass Player magazine article: "It took me a day to lift my jaw off the floor. I sat with my mouth agape watching one of the most professional shows I'd ever seen." After the show, EMI threw a party in Queen's honour at the Copacabana Palace Hotel. On the beach outside the hotel, some fans had gathered for a candle-lighting vigil, where 1,500 candles spelled out the word "Queen", as seen in the last three pictures above. Security tried to keep the enthusiastic crowd away from Brian May who was coming out of the hotel, very touched by the gesture of the fans. After he lit the last few candles, he stayed around to sign autographs. Not long afterward he jumped into the pool fully clothed. In 2015 Globo TV aired an hour long special commemorating the 30th anniversary of the festival, including clips of ‘Under Pressure’ and ‘Love Of My Life’ - both of which were not seen on the official release. One notable piece of commentary is from Brazilian singer Eduardo Dussek, who remarks (in Portugese) that families, rockers, and the metalhead headbangers all accepted the band." As mentioned above, a virtually complete video of the show has leaked into collectors' circles, although it is many generations from the master. The picture quality is acceptable, but the audio is far from great. Only a few seconds of ‘Under Pressure’ are missing.mThis concert is iconic and it’s about 6 months before Queen will break records again by stealing ‘Live Aid’ in July of 1985! I’m watching a 70s mecha anime called Groizer X, named after its titular mech, but its Brazilian dub, that’s for some reason named Space Pirate. I’m actually impressed by the kind of themes the story approaches, which makes it stand out for a Go Nagai side project. Under more because I’m also talking a bit about politcses.
Basically, a scientific mission from Gaira crash-lands in Antarctica and they’re put on cryo-sleep until their homeworld gets the distress signal. The nuclear weapons, however, disturb their sleep and they wake up earlier and the first thing the leaders decide to do is to conquer Earth with their superior technology and maybe or maybe not use Earth enslaved labor to build up technology so they can return home. They also kill all those who oppose, only the scientist’s daughter Rita escaping with their most powerful weapon: Groizer X, or Space Pirate.
The Gairans also elect Japan to be the most dangerous nation (since Space Pirate flew there) and decide to attack it. Now Rita has to join forces with the Japanese and their main pilot, Joe Kaisaka and use Space Pirate to fight against the Gairans.
What calls the attention most is how the Gairans operate like an imperialistic group. Most of them are on board with the conquest plans, but others are just into it because if they aren’t, they’ll be killed.
Rita decides to refuse joining their imperialistic ambitions and pays for it. While she gives them Space Pirate and co-pilots it, she’s not someone with military training. She also has to deal with the fact she won’t be accepted by some humans; after a Gairan attack on Japanese farms, with the objective of harming their food supply, the main Japanese scientist’s nephew loses both his parents. When Rita is outside, reflecting on this, the boy goes to her, says he knows who she is and will never forgive her – and, even if Rita wants to be kind to him, this isn’t solved in the same episode.
In the recent episode I watched (the 7th), the Gairans concoct a psychological plan to bring Rita back to the empire, by sending her ex-boyfriend to convince her. He hijacks a TV station, killing two employees to send her a message that briefly convinces her and she steals Space Pirate because she trusts him to be a good person and his offer to return to their homeworld and leaving Earth alone. When she's about to meet him, she receives a message from the professor that he killed two employees to send the message. When she confronts him about this, he regrets that he had to do and says he's fully on board with their imperialistic ambitions and their belief that they're superior to humans and even shoots down the Joe's plane (who had gone after her) and gives her an ultimatum; she refuses, saying humans and aliens are the same, and then they engage in a dogfight, but both really don't want that and, in the end, the he allows himself to be defeated by her and dies.
70’s mecha anime villains have a tendency to be empires – like the Dinosaur Empire in Getter Robo, the Vegans in Grendizer – and there’s argument to be made that they represent the fact Japan was an imperialistic country itself. The Dinosaur Empire, for example, used Unit 731-like tactics in the manga. So I can see how they’re trying to come to terms with the truth that their country had a terrible past and how they could overcome it. Rita makes a point to say that the Gairan Empire is based on kindness and justice, just like Earth and humanity. This also makes sure the Gairans that are attacking Earth are just the worst there is and, in their homeworld, they aren’t different from humans, implying that in a better future both species can be friends.
It's interesting that the series had a Brazilian release. It was probably picked randomly by the distributor, but the themes can resonate in a Third World country that has to deal with imperialistic concerns, both in the direct (open influence) and indirect (“we have devised this plan to help you, don’t mind that there’s no input from your nationals”) ways (because this is something I study in my research).
The series is made by Go Nagai as well, and we know he wasn’t one to shy away from approaching political issues in his work; but he also had the talent and ability to do it in an engaging way. Plus, the theme song is good, quite nostalgic with its 70’s energy and I think one can watch without thinking of the subtext.

Voting a low priority for Brazil’s growing ranks of hungry
Food insecurity has worsened since 2016. Sumaúma visits The Chuvisco Favela, in São Paulo’s South Zone, for a snapshot of a country where six in ten people do not have adequate access to food
Ana Mirtes da Silva Santos squeezes past her old oven, trying to dodge the drips from the ceiling. Her tiny wooden house, where the living room is separated from the bedroom by a flimsy partition, is home to her and her ten-year-old son Samuel. There’s a sink, a table, a TV, a bicycle, a fridge, a single bed shared by mother and son, a checked blanket that covers the window in place of glass, and a few items of clothing. On the cement floor, scraps of what was once carpet, soaked by the water dripping through the gaps in the ceiling, squelch underfoot. Ana weeps as she recounts how the previous day when the rain fell relentlessly, her t-shirt was drenched before she even stepped outside. And there are plenty of other reasons for her tears: since the pandemic drastically reduced the amount of casual cleaning work she could get, she and Samuel often eat rice with lettuce, or cornmeal porridge, for their main meal of the day. And when there isn’t enough food for two, she feeds her son and goes to bed hungry. “There’s a gnawing in my stomach,” she says.
It is the Tuesday before the most important election since democracy returned to Brazil in 1985. On Sunday, the country would go to the polls to decide whether former president and Workers’ Party candidate, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, would clash in a sure-to-be-bitterly-contested second-round run-off. A resident of the richest city, and the state with the most voters, in the country, Ana Mirtes has no say in the matter, as poverty has stripped her of her basic right to elect who will run Brazil. While her choice was Lula, she did not vote because the cost of the bus fare to the polling station would mean less money to spend on food. Two hours before the polls opened, she found herself choosing between voting and eating. It was the same decision faced by many of her neighbours, and contributed to the highest abstention rates at a Brazilian presidential election since 1998: in a country where voting is mostly compulsory, 20.95% of Brazilians stayed at home.
For those who do not know how they’ll feed themselves each day, worrying about who will govern the country is a luxury. Although the right to food is enshrined in the Brazilian constitution, in the alleys of this community in São Paulo’s South Zone there is no lack of stories that reveal the lengths people are forced to go to in search of food. Donations of basic food parcels provide rice, beans, pasta, flour, cooking oil and cornmeal. But the neighbourhood only receives 35 such parcels for its 500 families, explains the leadership of a community organisation in Chuvisco, which uses a rota to distribute the parcels amongst the neediest families. For fruit and veg, many depend on the generosity of market traders, who deliver their leftover stock when they close their stalls for the day. Protein has to be bought, and generally takes the form of eggs or cheap sausages, the least expensive options.
The favela is a snapshot of a hungry Brazil, where only four in ten families have adequate access to food, according to figures published in June by the Brazilian Research Network on Food and Nutrition Sovereignty and Security (widely known as the Penssan Network, after its acronym in Portuguese). A total of 33.1 million Brazilians – a level equivalent to the 1990s – fall into the most serious category of food insecurity, of those who do not eat three meals a day. In a country that left the United Nations Hunger Map in 2014, 14 million people have fallen into this category in a little more than a year (between the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2022). The data shows that 15.4% of Brazilian families do not have breakfast each day, 10% don’t always have lunch, and 19.9% sometimes miss out on dinner. Another category includes those that, despite not suffering from hunger on a daily basis, do not have guaranteed access to food: three out of ten families in Brazil describe the daily worry of not knowing what they will have to eat the next day.

Oh so many things! I’m very prone to nostalgia and love to indulge in its melancholy every now and then. I might mention another thing if this ask comes up again but this time let’s go with music! I can think of a few examples:
a) songs I listened to during my formative years, like this one (in Portuguese) that my grandma used to sing to me before bed time, and this one from Sailor Moon’s OST (Usagi/Seiya was one of my first ships and the song is about unrequited love of all things… guess I got a vibe tm)
b) songs or artists that I associate with specific moments of my teenage years like our queen Avril, The Fray, Imogen Heap, Anberlin and also this song which reminds me of an old love, this one actually makes me sad so I only listen to it during sad late hours;
c) j-pop ftw!!! nothing makes me more nostalgic than a good old Malice Mizer or Utada song, still love them;
d) movie soundtracks especially the ones from Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, two of my favorite animated movies and finally
e) you know those songs you connect to specific fics/ships and are forever ruined for other purposes? I haven’t read Steve/Tony since 2017 but listening to what I consider “their songs” always takes me back to that golden age (2012-2016) when I joined the MCU fandom, good times.
Ok so this got super long, but music is something I have strong and complicated feelings about, it’s been there for me during so many different phases of my life it makes it impossible to ignore the connection between music and nostalgia and memory. Would love to hear about what makes you nostalgic too :)

I was very much into anime and cartoons, and watched all kinds of stuff between those two spectrums! Some anime openings make me teary and nostalgic to this day 🥲 my favourite show was TV CRUJ (1997-2002), a Brazilian live-action series created in partnership with Disney (ofc they were involved somehow…). CRUJ stands for "Revolutionary Ultrayoung Comittee". The show featured a fictional pirate TV station airing Disney cartoons, and there was a side story involving the hosts, it was pretty cool and creative, completely different from anything I’d seen before or since. What about you @phoebe-delia, what was your favourite?

disappointing. that's what it is.
anyways, I spent half the day yesterday gluing back together a small blue and white ceramic dish from Finland that myles knocked off the counter. his mom used it as an ashtray for her pipe and they just got back from vacation last night.
it was almost dry and I was going to glue the two halves together today and I came out for coffee and noticed the clamps and elastic and everything else was on the table but the dish was gone. pretty sure his mom threw it away. oh. okay. guess I did all that for fucking nothing. I would have used it?
they are so fucking white-bread-white-conservative. just... so wasteful and lazy and ODD??? idk I've never seen people function this way, it's strange and infuriating to my soul.
like. I thought they would put veggie and fruit scraps in this Tupperware bc they composted (that's what I would do!) but HAHAHA no, they do it so the trash doesn't stink. they still bag it up and throw it out when it's full. THEY HAVE A GARDEN!!! they buy full-size plants and stick them in the ground. sigh. they've NEVER SAVED A SEED IN THEIR LIFE! girl, what are you doing. the amount of money you'd save. and the cooking. the cooking. but they insist they know better. okay. they think it's "so cute" that I tie my hair up so my curls dry better. just. weird shit. I've never felt so othered in my life - and I'm still considered white, but I have mixed heritage.
the racism-lite is ever present too. myles is thankfully not like them and neither was his brother. I texted myles bc I could hear our new neighbors across the street speaking Spanish and was like 😬 your parents are gonna love this! I'm gonna speak more Spanish just to irritate them. (I'm holding a grudge bc when we were in NH they very clearly left a swimming spot upon arrival bc of "salsa people" (almost everyone was of some Latin descent and speaking a different language and I was FURIOUS at them for being so blatantly racist. I can't believe myles had to utter the words "yeah, my parents won't go in the same water as them" UM GUESS THEY WONT GO IN THE POOL WITH ME THEN oh but I speak English and was born here.) They're the same way with Black people. if they're conservative and "white enough" they'll be nice enough to them though.
they suck the life out of this house. me and myles had such a nice weekend, just us and the dogs. they came home and the vibe went flat and dead.
wish I could get my own fucking place with myles and zazu but everything is shit and expensive. I'd rather leave the fucking country at this point.
it gets to the point where I get sick of watching TV/movies with only white people/English is spoken and I physically need to feed my soul something else. I have a Spanish (it might be Brazilian-Portuguese actually?) radio station saved in my pre-sets in my car bc I SIMPLY DONT WANT TO HEAR AMERICAN ENGLISH ANYMORE. this isn't to get a cookie lmao, I think I just get to a point where I'm furious and fed up because I haven't had to deal with this level of conservative republican mindset and be unable to escape it.

Ex-con Gloria Trevi plays S4
Gloria Trevi's reputation could shock even Courtney Love.
Much of what the public knows about the Mexican superstar has come through the grapevine.
And it's tough to sort out what's hype from what's real.
The facts of Trevi's career are simple: Bom in Monterrey in 1968, she moved to Mexico City as a teen, hoping to launch a career in pop music.
By the late '90s, she was one of the biggest female stars in Latin America, recording six top-selling albums and starring in films and TV specials.
With her ripped fishnet stockings and wild-grrl gesticulations, Trevi became a pop-culture Latina feminist.
During concerts, she'd invite a male audience member onstage only to remove his belt and beat him with it.
The nickname "Mexican Madonna" has stuck to her like glue.
Trevi's popularity increased tremendously.
However, she was ruthlessly criticized by conservatives.

Her song and video "Todos me miran" was about gay men coming out, which became a No. 1 hit on Mexico's billboard chart.
But she encountered severe troubles in 1999, when Trevi, along with her husband-manager Sergio Andrade, was accused of kidnapping and brainwashing young singers and turning them into sex slaves for Andrade.

For two years she fled to fight extradition while jailed in one of Brazil's harshest prisons.
During her incarceration, Trevi supposedly impregnated herself using a syringe made out of a ballpoint pen and sperm smuggled from a Brazilian drug lord.
In 2004, Trevi was released, only to be acquitted for lack of evidence.
And it's been speculated that Trevi's overtly sexual image, along with her liberal views on abortion, gay rights and sex out of wedlock may have contributed to her trouble in her conservative homeland.
In 2004, she played the Smirnoff Music Center and earned rave reviews.
Since then, she's become a regular performer at LGBT Pride events in the U.S.
Along with Erasure, Trevi is already scheduled to headline San Diego Pride 2008.
On Thursday, she performs what promises to be an especially intimate gig at S4.

The A-Team, auf Deutsch
Sunday morning TV in Germany has an eclectic mix of programming.
One channel had a programme which showed typically German looking churches in the mountains shot from a helicopter.
And that was the programme.
As I was flicking through the channels on the hostel TV I came across The A-Team, the American show from the 1980’s.
I can remember watching the show when I was a kid.
And looking at the show in the hostel I could remember the voices of the actors and how they’d sound when they say their catchphrases.
In Germany though they dub foreign shows so you don’t get to hear the Col. Smith say ‘I love it when a plan comes together’.
And you don’t hear B.A. say 'I pity the fool’.
When MacGuyver started speaking in German I thought enough was enough and went out to look at Hamburg.
I’d seen the famous Reeperbahn area the day before and wasn’t in any rush to go back there.
I’d been to the DOM seasonal fairground which was good fun but somewhere to go at night, so, I set off for the Botanic Gardens.
They had a strange layout that didn’t have much flow.
They also had a funny style to them, over planned or maybe even under planned.
It was maybe more of a park with different sections than a Botanic Garden.
But maybe a Botanic Garden is just one big park.
I walk all over the city, past the stadium of the famous Hamburg team St. Pauli,
past the ubiquitous TV Tower,
past Chancellor Bismark and back to the area where I’m staying.
Cars are being driven into the train station beside my hostel.
The car owners are driving their own cars into the train station and the cars are being put on train carriages to be transported to some other part of Germany.
Back in the hostel the English gang has left and the atmosphere has changed.
I share a glass of wine with a Brazilian couple who live in Dublin to study English.
They’re doing some travelling around Europe for a couple of weeks.
The following day I go up to Lubeck, a city I’d heard of but never made it to before.
Lubeck is famous in my mind for marzipan.
The firm of Niederegger has made chocolate covered marzipan famous far away from Germany let alone Lubeck.
Lubeck escaped much of the heavy bombing that pretty much levelled Hamburg so it retains a different look with narrow 16th and 17th centruy streets and buildings and churches of character.
The almost uniformly brown brick, green roofed churches are around every turn it seems.
In common with their brown bricks and green roofs they all seem to lean.
It’s famous gate, the Hollstentor, leans forward to welcome tourists.
