hey, I know there's a lot going on right now but I want to make a post about a recent tragedy that's happened here in Brazil
tl;dr: heavy storms caused floods and landslides in some cities in São Paulo, and many people are in need of help after losing their homes. If you're in Brazil, you can donate food, clothes and other necessary items
Last weekend, during Carnaval, the northern coast of the state of São Paulo was struck by very heavy storms, which resulted in terrible floods and landslides, specially in poor areas
Because of this, many people lost their homes or are currently unable to access them, and are having to stay in shelters. There are also searches being conducted in the affected areas as many people are still missing, and the death toll is rising each day, which means many people have lost their family, friends and loved ones or may be separated from them
All of this is to say, São Paulo needs help. Shelters need a lot of resources to take care of everyone who's unhoused, and people who still have their homes may still need donations as a lot has been lost and not everyone is able to buy more food, new clothes, etc, specially if they also have to worry about rebuilding or fixing any part of their house, etc
If you're in Brazil and are able to donate food, clothes, personal hygiene objects or anything else necessary to campaigns in the places affected, please do. I'm not sure if there's any way currently to donate if you're not here, but if there is, please let me know
If there's any links to campaigns that I can add to this post, also let me know
Sources [all in portuguese]: one (talking about the tragedy), two (city hall of São Sebastião), three (images, also has outdated situation of the roads), four (how to help)

Gonna make a small public announcement here
Tomorrow is the second round for Brazil’s presidential elections, and there is a good chance that we’ll be able to vote Bolsonaro (our current far-right homophobic, transphobic, racist and just overall absolute garbage piece of shit joke of a human being president) out of office, and actually get a left leaning president in.
So if you’re following me and you’re brazilian (and even if ur not), I’ll assume it’s because you like/love Star Trek. If you are a supporter/voter of Bolsonaro I want abso-fuckin-lutely nothing to do with you, i hate you more than words can describe, the chaos we are in is YOUR fault and if you support someone like him you absolutely do NOT understand or ignore the politics and message of Star Trek, and I would say “shame on you” but we all know y’all far-right cattle have no shame. So fuck you, my content is NOT for you, eat shit.

if you don't mind, would you explain kelly's latest story? As much as i understand, the video suggests he must be a criminal bc he went to an underdeveloped region? like wtf?
So, i had to go look this up because I don't follow her on social media but, from what I saw she posted two things: 1 - shared two posts from a brazilian ex olympic volleyball player turned far-right commentator, and 2 - shared the video you mentioned.
TLDR Kelly is spreading bigoted misinformation.
About the posts she shared: the first mentions a report by a journal called Gazeta do Povo (a Bolsonaro supporting """"news"""" company) where they talk about the history between Lula (the left wing candidate for president of Brasil, who also was the president during 2002-2010) and Daniel Ortega (Nicaragua's president, a described dictator). This is part of a recent strategy by Bolsonaro's campaign as they try to moral panic people into believing that Lula would bring a left wing dictatorship and that Brazil will "become like Venezuela or Nicaragua" which in their minds are poor, violent and ravaged countries where all women are pr*stitutes and gangs rule the nations.
This, obliviously, isn't true. I don't have time to debunk it all.
All of this is basically trying to gaslight people as if Lula is the one who would push for a dictatorship (even if he was in power for 8 years and all he's done was strengthen democratic institutions) while Bolsonaro literally has said that he would strike a coup. Go figure.
The 2nd post she shared was again from this commentator, who I'll say again: is a fascist volleyball player who became a political commentators for Jovem Pan. Jovem Pan is the Fox News of Brazil, they are horrible, all they do is lie and preach right wing, fascist, racist and homophobic content on tv. They are the channel of choice for Bolsonaro because it is, as the girls say, a right wing bubble. The news thing she shared was about Jovem Pan, and it's a report on how the Lula campaign allegedly was going to request maybe possibly for Jovem Pan to be shut down.
To my knowledge, this isn't exactly true. Jovem Pan is claiming "censure" from the Electoral Courts (we have a specific branch of the judiciary that takes care of organizing the elections) all because they keep lying about Lula, and calling him a "thief" and spilling so much fake garbage about him that the courts have repeatedly granted Lula motions to give him the "right of response" on tv against these false claims or demanded that the content be taken down by the publisher. You see, here in Brazil, sharing and spreading fake news about the elections and the electoral system isn't exactly legal. It's a practice that's being fought by the courts and prosecutors.
Just because we're in a democracy, it doesn't mean you can say whatever the fuck you want, especially if that is with the intention of benefiting a certain candidate on tv by lying about the other candidate. Campaign laws are very strict here and misinforming electors ain't allowed.
So essentially, because the courts are saying "nah, mate, you ain't gonna be allowed to just spread misinformation like that", this fascist news organization is saying they are being censored. And Kelly seems to be agree. Yeah. Shocker.
The third post she shared is indeed a video of misinformation connecting Lula with organized crime.
This is something that has been rampant since Lula decided to do a rally at Complexo do Alemão, a favela community complex in Rio de Janeiro. He wore a cap with the letters "CPX" on it, which means "Complexo" or "Complex". The hat was given to him as a gift by a group of supporters who have a small hat selling business at the favela. This is a poor region, predominantly populated by black and marginalized individuals, those who have been ignored by the state.
Bolsonaro, during covid, even went as far as saying that they would be fine, because they were "bathing in the sewer" and didn't die, so the virus wouldn't kill them. I don't even need to mention here that favelas were absolutely ravaged by COVID, do I? Do I also need to mention that favelas have a lot to do with the legacy of slavery in Brazil? Or that Brazil was the last country of the Americas to abolish slavery?
Favelas are notoriously viewed as dangerous places, where organized crime is rampant. I don't have any way of explaining the racist ways in which the drug war, racism and policing has made it so that those people have to live oftentimes in the middle of war zones that are constantly getting invaded by heavy armored police and being hit by "stray bullets", having their homes invaded and being executed without a trial by police officers.
The Bolsonaro administration has seen and supported some of the most horrific mass killings by the state at favelas.
I'll try to leave some links at the end of this post where you can learn more if you want.
Now.
The video she shared basically said that the reason why Lula was able to go up to the favela and have a rally was because he was a criminal and associated with criminals, who wanted him to get elected, and that Bolsonaro isn't liked by criminals because he's """tough on crime""" tc etc.
However, this is LAUGHABLE as, Bolsonaro is literally FACTUALLY involved with the Rio de Janeiro militia. Yes, the militia. Made up of dirty current and ex cops, mostly from dictatorship-time "death squads" that have taken over Rio and are destroying the state.
So, the video not only is racist and absurd as it insinuates that just because a politician ACTUALLY goes to where the vulnerable people live and is welcomed by those people, who have been suffering, particularly hard over the past four years, then he must be criminal, but also, completely dismisses the fact that Bolsonaro legit 1) has a son who employed the wife AND MOTHER of a milita chief on assistant roles on his cabinet (his sons are also elected officials) 2) LIVED on the same condominiums with a militia member who was implicated on the murder of Mariele Franco, a Rio de Janeiro city councilwoman who was a black, bisexual, favela born woman who was brutally murdered back in 2019.
This isn't about crime.
This is about race. This is about class.
This is about working people being seen and heard and given respect.
Lula went there and was received with love and joy, and didn't try to move away from them, he went there with the purpose of showing his support for those vulnerable communities during these absurd and hellish times.
And then Bolsonaro called all favela residents "criminals" on tv during the debate last Sunday.
Anyways, sorry this was so long.
I, obviously, get rilled up over this shit because I'm terrified of what's going to happen on the next few weeks.
I'll add some links you might wanna check out about some of the stuff I mentioned:
Reports about Bolsonaro’s involvement with the militia (a murderous cop mafia in Rio de Janeiro) X X
Report about the police killing people during operations at favelas X  (HEAVY trigger warning here for blood and brutality)
Reports about how much covid ravaged the communities X X
Disclaimer: this post has been midly edited for grammar, clarity and to add some links on the bottom.

lol, so today (finally, thank fuck) we had Lula’s inauguration
Bolsonaro decided to behave like a child and flew the country a few days ago so there wasn’t anybody oficial to hand Lula the presidential sash... Bet he thought it would make things real awkward
But Lula made the most of it and decided that representatives of the brazilian popularion should do it, then
Congress members? politicians? oficers? nope. People, commom people, which resulted in one of the most beautiful inauguration moments this country has seen
Tumblr media
And from the hands of a cook, a metalworker, an indigenous 90-year-old leader, a garbage colector, a disabled activist, a teacher, and a 10-year-old black boy came the sash
(and please also note his dog. yes that is Lulas dog. she wanted to participate)
Tumblr media
You can hate Lula all you want... But you can’t say the man hasn’t got style

Person of colour on TV: *exists*
Every fucking white person over the age of 45 in a 10 mile vicinity: There’s too many BLACK people on TV now there’s gonna be no white people soon. Seeing one person who makes up less than 18% of the population is obviously an indication that we’re being oppressed and wiped out. I am totally normal and mentally sound thanks for asking. I can vote btw

considering what you have spoken about regarding selina do you also get frustrated with like…i cant quite explain it but sometimes especially in more recent years shes been posed or positioned like some sort of damsel that needs a big strong man to save her and like im not saying she should be portrayed with the “hollywood level feminism” for lack of a better term im just think about how old versions of selina would have hated that. like im just thinking of anytime in the reeves movie where bruce grabs her or forces her mouth shut or even when he didnt allow her to kill falcone and im just thinking she should claw the fuck out of him for that. i just miss a version of selina who wouldnt allow anyone to walk all over her personal autonomy like that
oh absolutely! in fact this is specifically why i can't stand loeb's take on her character lol (and as we both know that was a significant point of reference for the reeves film). it's really jarring to transition from her volume one and two canon to the long halloween / dark victory / when in rome. i think a lot of people tend to latch onto these books because tim sale's art is to die for and it's obv hard not to enjoy a good murder mystery. in that aspect they're still books i can enjoy in isolation. but i find it very difficult to enjoy them as a selina fan specifically because in every single one it's like she's looking for solace and security in a man and i'm not sure why. like what was so bad about her original backstory of having a deadbeat dad (whether you ascribe to the volume one or volume two version of him) and why did she need to go looking for her "real" father in carmine falcone. why did she need to seek out temporary boytoy relief in italy. why did she dream about being saved by bruce. none of it really has a reason other than to create a "lack" in her for the sake of it being there, because she'd never needed a man like that before in her post-crisis narrative. as you mentioned it was quite to the contrary and she was fiercely independent and protective of her own peace, esp from men. when she felt empty or without a connection or lifeline to someone real, it was mostly about people like maggie or holly or arizona. her people
what i think it ultimately comes down to are two things: the first thing is the diminishment of her post-crisis origins. after all, it's convenient to ignore how distrustful selina is of people, and of men with power at their leisure to abuse specifically, when her post-crisis origins are no longer relevant to her personal characterization. although selina's status as a sex worker is more prominent now, it was more or less completely swept under the rug for the bulk of volume two. loeb also refused to engage with it in any capacity. it only really resurfaced with the conclusion to volume two because it drew direct parallels to how we initially found her in volume one, and then brubaker expanded on it once again in his take on the character, which was notably juxtaposed against a pre-existing romance with bruce and brings me to the second thing. i've already waxed about this at length so this may very well be recap but i really don't think selina's lack of control over her personal autonomy can be divorced of the modern portrayal of the romance. when selina looking for security and understanding and comfort in bruce is what drives the romance forward there's not much room to maintain her original values and guarded demeanor, if not her outright defensiveness and hostility. a lot of people look at the extensive trauma selina has experienced and argue that she deserves to be in a relationship with someone who allows her to let those walls down. this isn't incorrect in theory. but it does repeatedly ignore who she is. it's kind of like the point i was making about bruce yesterday. exploring the inherently abusive nature of robin or of bruce's right to his children in light of that fact is interesting to do, but the actual execution has rarely managed to take into account who bruce actually is
for however nice it might be for selina to let her walls down romantically and look for solace in bruce—and i say this mostly for the sake of argument, personally i would argue against its necessity—it's realistically not something she's actually going to do. at least not as willfully as she's been portrayed to. realistically she's going to make it extremely hard, which if anything is precisely the appeal. i love it when selina gives bruce a hard time. i love that it's not supposed to be easy or maybe even a possibility for him to win her over bc there's so much about his own ideological stances that's flawed and in opposition to her own. she doesn't have to be any less unrelenting in her principles and worldview for that romance between them to be compelling bc at the end of the day the entire crux of it is that against all odds bruce cares. for however wrong he thinks she might be in a given moment or in her stance against the government, he knows who she is and how hard she's fought and what she's survived and it makes him sympathetic to her because she's real. she's a wonderful character through which to explore the logical limits of bruce's self-righteousness and categorization of crime, as well as a wonderful mirror to hold up to his face as he starts to ask himself whether what he's doing is really the only means of keeping the city safe. and the novelty of it all is that you don't have to sacrifice her character for any of that to be true. writers have simply deluded themselves into believing that they have to and that's why we are where we are today
#you're so real about the reeves movie btw i think she should have kicked him off of a building personally#outbox#also not something i mentioned above but i think a looooot of people cling to bronze age selina#because it was purportedly her first 'positive' portrayal. personally i would argue against that though#i think her golden age iteration was plenty 'positive' and there was an inherent understanding that although she loved supervillainy#she wasn't necessarily evil in a way comparable to other rogues. she always had an inclination towards mercy and bruce Noticed that#which is what made their relationship really interesting. bc she was committing crimes and in his head he was like#yeaaaah she's wrong. but she's also not hurting anyone per se. and she's so pretty. let me turn a blind eye it's fine#these were more generic ideas that newell subsequently rewrapped in new skin and then further developed along a political lens#but i think a lot of people comparatively prefer bronze age selina bc it fully embraced a romance in the most traditional sense#so at the end of the day a lot of the fan sentiment really comes down to preferring wish fulfillment over good storytelling. at least imo#bronze age selina to me is one of the most boring characters ever. and i also hate that she has to 'prove' she's no longer villainous to br#to bruce. and the fact that he suspects her. like since the 40s it's been word of law by the ogs that bruce Doesn't suspect her#he's the first person to not suspect her while everyone around him is judging him for it#i know writers and perspectives change etc etc but when that's what the original creators of both characters are telling you#i feel like it has to hold some weight#so yeah. bronze age might as well be the shit under my shoe it's so boring and bland and most of all ahistorical#bronze age batkat i mean

brazil has been going through some wild times recently
Tumblr media
[ id: the "destiel confession" meme format. A two panel meme with Castiel at thr top, smiling, with tears in his eyes, and Dean at the bottom, holding back tears, both from the show Supernatural. They face each other.
Castiel says: "I love you". Dean says: "Fernando Collor has been found guilty of corruption for the second time and might be sentenced to up to 33 years in jail". /End id ]
Tumblr media
[ id: the exact same meme as above, but with different text on Dean's part. Castiel says: "I love you".
Dean responds: "The "Mata Atlântica" biome is under threat once more as the Ministry of the Environment might no longer have power over its protection and there are attempts to loosen restrictions of deforestation in its territory. It has many endangered species that don't exist anywhere else, just as the Sphinx Macaw, the bird from "Rio", and it occupies less than 20% of its original territory. Many animals and plants will go extinct or no longer exist in the wild because of this." /End id ]
Tumblr media
[ id: the same exact meme as above, but once again, with a different response from Dean. Castiel says: "I love you".
Dean says: "The Ministry of Indigenous People might no longer be responsible for the demarcation of indigenous territory, which is now under significant threat due to a new law proposal that makes it so only land that was already occupied by indigenous people in 1998, when the new brazilian constitution was made, can be considered indigenous land." /End id ]
