Baraqiel and Azazel
Disclaimer: DO NOT ask Neil Gaiman to confirm or deny any of this. He doesn't want you to ask. I don't want you to ask.
SO DON'T ASK.
Edit: Neil confirmed this theory and it's not my fault: see the reblog
Now, on with the meta.
Tumblr media
Thesis and evidence below the cut:
Dominion...
Tumblr media
Angel of the Sky...
Tumblr media
Hair an eye-burning ginger, eyebrows like grisly slugs, often draped in red…
Tumblr media

Tumblr media

Tumblr media
So that's everything from purely within Good Omens canon.
Baraqiel is described, additionally, in the Book of Enoch as:
Lord of Lightning
Tumblr media
Who taught the forbidden knowledge of astronomy:
Tumblr media
He is also the overseer of the Second Heaven, wherein lies the prison of Fallen Angels. More on that later.
The story of Baraqiel’s ejection from Heaven is contained in the Book of Enoch, but he’s not a main character. In fact, he’s only one of twenty major fallen angels, specifically, the ninth. The tenth is Azazel.
Who, then, is Azazel?
Firstly, Azazel is a fallen angel:
Tumblr media
Who is damned because he introduces humans to forbidden knowledge, specifically, the knowledge of swords [and other devices of warfare]:
Tumblr media
And also the knowledge of adornment, specifically, “the art of making up the eyes, and of beautifying the eyelids, and the most precious stones, and all kinds of coloured dyes.”
Tumblr media
And insofar as Azazel is synonymous with Azzael, he denounces the authority of the Metatron:
Tumblr media
In fact, Azazel is given all the blame for revealing the secrets of Heaven: “the whole Earth has been ruined by the teaching of the works of Azazel; and against him write: ALL SIN.”
and God orders Raphael punish Azazel: “And further the Lord said to Raphael: "Bind Azazel by his hands and his feet and throw him into the darkness. And split open the desert, which is in Dudael, and throw him there.””
We never learn in the Book of Enoch that Raphael actually does this (based on my reading), but it was commanded. In fact, Raphael would have had to throw Azazel into that prison which was in the domain of Baraqiel.
This puts Baraqiel!Crowley and Azazel!Aziraphale among the ranks of angels that went to Earth and delighted in Earthly pleasures, which caused them to be “fallen,” that God refused to speak to from then on, that Enoch!Metatron was ordered by God to tell that they were unforgiven and would never be forgiven.
It’s worth noting that there seems to be some disagreement among rabbinical scholars over whether Samyaza, Azza, Azzael, and Azazel are separate entities or if these are different names for the same entity. We should also remember that in the universe of Good Omens, entities change names when they ascend to or fall from Heaven.
Tying this all back to the Metatron: In 3 Enoch, the book which describes the ascent of Enoch the man to Metatron the angel, we learn that the overseer of the Second Heaven is Baraqiel, angel of lightning. The description of the prison in the Second Heaven and the angels trapped within it is terrifying, but not more than Enoch’s own actions when he is there.
At this point Enoch has not been transfigured into the Metatron yet, but when he passes by, the angels ask him to pray for them to the Lord; and he refuses, for “who am I, a mortal man, that I may pray for angels?” He is told about them again in the Fifth Heaven, about their sins, how they followed Satan, and that they will be punished on Judgment Day.
So we have a lot of reasons here to see that there would be enmity directly between the Metatron and Azazel, for questioning his authority before God, and between Baraqiel and Enoch!Metatron, for either Baraqiel was guarding the prison or already in it when the human who would become Metatron was supplicated for prayers of redemption and refused. Either way, the Metatron is responsible for Baraqiel’s fall, most directly because he refused to take the petition of the fallen angels before God and instead relied on his interpretation of a dream.
There’s been a lot of implication and even exposition throughout S2 that memory is vulnerable to erasure. We’ve gotten some direct hints that Crowley doesn’t remember all of his past, but I would venture to propose that Aziraphale has a very troubled past that he does not remember, that the Metatron (and possibly Crowley) does, and that further, because his memory was [partially] removed, his name was changed to Aziraphale, for which we see precedent in Jimbriel and all the demons.
My absolutely unhinged, unsubstantiated S3 prediction is that Angel!Crowley sacrificed himself to rescue Azazel from damnation, and the price of Azazel remaining an angel was losing the memories of his transgressions, including (and especially) those he formed with Angel!Crowley. That at the Garden of Eden, Crawley!Crowley knew that these things had been erased, and that he was probably talking to a husk of his former friend, the way that Jim was a husk of Gabriel, but that when he learned that Aziraphale had given away the sword, realized that the soul of the person he loved was still in there.

Hi, no babe, I'm sorry, you can't just cross this out and then leave, what the fuck does this mean??? Get your ass back here and explain yourself?????
Oh my friend! Settle in for the story of the Book of Enoch! It's an apocryphal Hebrew text, excluded from formal canon (Jewish and Christian) but still considered canon by some Ethiopian Orthodox churches.
Crib notes version: 200 angels decided that human women were hot and made a pact with each other that they'd down to Earth, take them as wives, and make babies with them. Their sins included fornication and distribution of forbidden knowledge, including sorcery (okay, fair) and cosmetics (because God doesn't like it when people get tarted up, I guess).
Their children were the Nephilim, which has been translated as giants. These human-angel hybrids consumed all available resources and then turned on each other in cannibalism. God got pissed off and decided to send a flood to kill everyone but Noah BUT ESPECIALLY TO KILL THE NEPHILIM. Like, that's the reason the flood HAPPENED, THAT'S the sin God was mad about.
Additional points: the messenger between God and these bad angels is Enoch, Noah's grandfather. Enoch later ascends (God plucks him up, takes him to Heaven and sticks wings on him, literally this is what happens) and gets renamed as:
(ominous music)
THE METATRON.

The appearance adopted by Metatron came from a youth named Enoch (365 years old was still young for humans at the time), who was the patriarch of a tribe. Enoch had compassion for the descendants of fallen angels, even was willing to intercede for them before God. The steps of those who walk with God finally stop at the stairway to heaven. From then on, there were only incarnations of light and fire, one who occupied the throne next to the throne of glory. Without doubts, its personality is nothing like Enoch…

The Solar Analemma
The camera set up in the exact same spot taking a photo everyday is what captures the sun forming the Analemma.
The Center Ring is the Equator, the inner circle is the tropic of Cancer and the outer ring is the tropic of Capricorn. The Sun moves 1° everyday through the zodiac the Moon moves 15 degrees everyday.
This is the way the Book of Enoch describes our realm...
Tumblr media
Outer ring Capricorn - the winter months... The highest point in the sky is Cancer June/Summer months. That's why the Sun never sets in Alaska/North Pole during the summer. Full moons happen once per month and the Moon will always be in the opposite sign of the Sun, new moon's, the moon is in the same sign as the sun. 30 days for the sun to get thru each sign = 1 month, the Moon will travel through each sign in 2-2½ days. Sun is the year, Moon is the month.
Our stationary level earth is a giant clock.
I call it level Earth because water will always level out. 🤔

The Seven Archangels in "Hazbin Hotel"
Tumblr media
We can probably make an educated guess of who the angels in this image are, based off of the Seven Archangels in Biblical folklore:
Michael, Archangel of Mercy ("Michael the Merciful")
Gabriel, Herald of Visions, and Archangel of Justice
Uriel, Guardian of the Garden of Eden, Archangel of Knowledge and Wisdom
Chamuel (Camael), Archangel of Hope
Raphael, Archangel of Peace and Healing
Jophiel, Archangel of Beauty and Art
Zadkiel, Archangel of Kindness (likely replacement for Lucifer)
Of these, most are male, but Uriel is sometimes feminized as "Urielle, Eurielle or Orielle". I could see Jophiel, Chamuel (Camael), and Zadkiel being female, nonbinary, or agender, depending on design.
The main four are Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, and Chamuel:
"And the Lord said to Gabriel: 'Proceed against the bastards and the reprobates, and against the children of fornication: and destroy [the children of fornication and] the children of the Watchers from amongst men [and cause them to go forth]: send them one against the other that they may destroy each other in battle: for length of days shall they not have.'" — 1 Enoch 10:9 [...] "And he said to me: 'This first is Michael, the merciful and long-suffering: and the second, who is set over all the diseases and all the wounds of the children of men, is Raphael: and the third, who is set over all the powers, is Gabriel: and the fourth, who is set over the repentance unto hope of those who inherit eternal life, is named [Chamuel].' And these are the four angels of the Lord of Spirits and the four voices I heard in those days." — Enoch 40:9
From this, we can discern that Gabriel, Archangel of Justice, likely authorized the exterminations of Hell under Adam and Lute.
My thoughts are that each of the Archangels governs one of the Seven Paths, which "winners" can devote themselves to in Heaven:
Michael - Path of Mercy (Heaven's bureaucrats)
Gabriel - Path of Justice (Adam, Lute, Vaggie)
Uriel - Path of Wisdom (Heaven's scientists + philosophers)
Chamuel - Path of Hope (Heaven's priests + therapists)
Raphael - Path of Healing (Heaven's doctors + nurses)
Jophiel - Path of Beauty (Heaven's artists)
Zadkiel - Path of Kindness (angels who help humanity)

Collection of Old Church Slavonic texts in PDFs
I've been collecting Old Church Slavonic texts that have been dated to the 9th and 10th century Great Moravia and the First Bulgarian Empire, and reconstructed to as close to the original as possible with restored orthography, since most surviving copies are from much younger manuscripts and some details might have been lost in transmission and changes to the orthography.

All files with (g) at the end also contain text in the Glagolitic alphabet.

Can we talk about Metatron a bit - his part in the end of season 2 has been bothering me and I’m trying to figure out what happened.
So Metatron the Angel most prominently appears in the Hebrew Merkabah Book of Enoch where it’s written that Metatron was first, the human Enoch, who was a pious man who God took into heaven and transformed him into an Angel. There are lots of versions of this depending on the source but this is the simplest version!
Now this is interesting as when Metatron in GO hands Aziraphale the coffee, who then asks if he should drink it, Metatron answers that he too has ingested things before. Primordial Angels would never eat or drink on Earth (unless you’re Aziraphale) but as he has been a human, this explains why he’d have previously eaten and drank.
**Also, when have we ever known Aziraphale drink coffee?!**
Tumblr media
Right, back to Metatron.
His job in heaven is the celestial scribe, writing all the choices made in Heaven and Earth in the Book of Life.
Despite how well Aziraphale and Crowley tried to hide whatever they were doing or thinking, this wouldn’t have gotten past Metatron.
In spiritual texts, Metatron is said to have an effect on people that urges them to replace a negative thought with a positive one, encouraging people to be master of their thoughts and not slave to them (makes me think of the saying ‘don’t let your heart rule your head’).
Having spent 6000 years recording the goings on between Aziraphale and Crowley, he would have known all too well what consequences Aziraphale’s unhealthy thoughts had had, especially from Heaven’s perspective.
With this is mind, I don’t think it was the coffee (being spiked that is) that caused Aziraphale to make the decisions he did, but rather it was Aziraphale making the decisions, minus the thoughts of any consequences they would have on Crowley or their life together. To him, the offer to return to heaven as it’s leader, with Crowley back as an Angel, was the positive thought, and nothing to the contrary would change that.
One source claims Metatron helps to "rid yourself of all energies that do not serve your own higher good or the will of the Creator."
(Metatron: Invoking the Angel of God’s Presence)
You can see directly after the kiss and after asked if he needed anything else, there is a brief moment where Aziraphale might say something, but then his face changes and he says “I forgive you” or “Got everything I need”, instead of what we all hoped he would say.
For me, the act of giving Aziraphale a coffee was simply an ice breaker to catch Aziraphale off his guard. Metatron having been a human knows about the offering of drinks to guests or friends, but also that it would lower Aziraphale’s guard and make the manipulation easier.
Metatron knew all along Crowley wouldn’t have gone to Heaven, but he had to offer it in order to convince Aziraphale it was such a perfect idea. Metatron knows the power that Crowley possesses and by having Aziraphale in Heaven, he ultimately has control of Crowley as he knows Crowley will 100% never do anything to hurt Aziraphale.

The Erasure of Human!Metatron
The elephant in the room is that Neil has [purportedly] denied the existence of a human Metatron. But I, for one, think an elephant really ties the room together. So let's get started.
First, I will address Neil Gaiman’s apparent denial of the Human!Metatron storyline (below the cut):
Tumblr media
Caption: The Metatron in Good Omens wasn't ever human.
Which would seem to put the debate to bed.
Except.
Tumblr media
Caption: That’s not really his father. It is. It is now, and it always was.
By Adam renouncing Satan as his father, we have in-story canon evidence that the past can be retroactively changed. So a storyline past can be divergent from an in-world past which has been modified. But only to a degree, because Aziraphale and Crowley clearly remember that Adam ~was~ Satan’s son, and Adam still retains some residual powers. Like pencil marks on paper, the past can be erased, but the shadow of its former self will always be there. But if that's not enough for you, there's also...
Lucifer!Satan
Neil Gaiman has also been pretty consistent with this characterization about the non-existence of the past in other characters, for example Lucifer!Satan:
Tumblr media
Basically (not to be rude), if you think that these statements can be taken to mean that we will definitely not get a story about Enoch aka Human!Metatron in S3, you have fundamentally misunderstood how time, history, and identity work in Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens universe.
So what Neil said about Metatron never being human… can we just collectively set that aside for a moment?
Tumblr media
Caption: Work with me, I’m extrapolating here. Yes? Good. Read the rest of the meta.
Evidence of Human!Metatron
Now that we have established that a former, no-longer-existing version of Metatron could have been human, let’s examine the in-world evidence. The best direct evidence is:
Tumblr media
Caption: I’ve ingested things in my time, you know.
This is weirdly important in the Book of Enoch. Food is mentioned in the Book of Enoch at least fourteen times, and consistently it is associated with being human, and having earthly desires, and subsequently with sin, whereas the angels are described as not needing to eat food but instead being nourished by faith alone. Enoch!Metatron’s own relationship with food is also explicitly elucidated:
Enoch answered to his son Mathosalam (and) said: Hear, child, from the time when the Lord anointed me with the ointment of his glory, (there has been no) food in me, and my soul remembers not earthly enjoyment, neither do I want anything earthly.
I propose that "in my time" is a direct reference to Metatron's prior existence as a human, and the fact that this time is over serves to underscore his current inhumanity, making him all the more sinister.
Other Evidence Pointing to Book of Enoch
This next bit is somewhat dubious evidence, but the entire reason I wound up investigating this is that I was actually investigating Baraqiel:
Tumblr media
…and for the God-fearing life of me, I cannot find any reference to Baraqiel except in the Book of Enoch. So this is a pretty big ✨Clue✨ to just leave hanging out there if it’s not supposed to lead us to this text.
The Scottish Mason
Okay guys, this the part where it all comes unhinged, but I promise the payoff is worth it.
The Book of Enoch was recovered from Ethiopia in 1773 by a Scottish explorer named James Bruce, who also happened to be a Mason. In 1774, upon his return, he was made a Fellow of The Royal Society of Edinburgh. And if this quote doesn’t get you, I don’t know what will:
Amazingly, Bruce brings back not just one copy, nor two, but three! Three copies of this text, which was previously thought to have been lost to the West forever. This inevitably led to all kinds of accusations as to where he had come by them, and more importantly how? Add to this that Bruce was a Mason in one of the most influential lodges, a Bruce descendant, and an imposing physical figure and 6 feet 4 inches tall, with dark red hair and an irascible temper, it is no wonder that so much excitement and mystery surrounded the man. [source]
So, you know, this guy:
Tumblr media
In summary:
There are reasons that we should be looking to the Book of Enoch, and the story surrounding its reintroduction to the Western world, as source evidence for Good Omens S3.
If you enjoyed this, you may also like my meta on Baraqiel and Azazel, which draws upon the Book of Enoch.
My original (in retrospect, kind of terrible) Metatron meta is here.

Are nephilim real or did nazis make them up too?
I strongly doubt that they're real, but the idea of nephilim is ancient! They feature rather prominently in the Book of Enoch, a pseudepigraphal and apocryphal piece of literature dating back to around 300-200 BCE. This video is a good introduction to the topic:

Chalkydri from Book of Enoch.
In the narrative, chalkydri dwell near the Sun and ran its course around the earth with it bringing heat and dew to the earth. The chalkydri and phoenixes are described as creatures with the head of a crocodile and the feet and tail like that of a lion, each having twelve wings, and are the color purple like the rainbow. The phoenixes in Greek myth are not the same mentioned here. At sunrise, all the chalkydri break into song with their counterparts, alerting the birds of the world for a new day to rejoice.
