Zojuist uitgelezen ‘De Bokkenrijders met de dode hand’, band 1, geschreven door Godfried (Frits) G.M. Schoonbrood. Nu gestart met band 2. De Landen van Overmaas in de 18e eeuw: Vanaf de jaren dertig schrikt de bevolking op door een golf van inbraken met mishandeling en zelfs moord. De autoriteiten schrijven deze toe aan ‘eene groote bande inbreekers, knevelaers, dieven ende roovers’, later ‘de Bende van de Bokkerijders’ genoemd. Meedogenloze vervolgingen beginnen. Intimidaties en folteringen leiden tot de vereiste bekentenissen en executies van verdachten. Is er daadwerkelijk sprake van banditisme en zo ja, wat zijn dan mogelijke ontstaansfactoren? Volgen de lokale rechtbanken wel het geldende recht en hoe is dit tot stand gekomen? Is er bij de vervolging sprake van een analogie met de inquisitie- en de heksenprocessen? Bevatten de procesdossiers wel betrouwbare informatie? Door deze vragen geïnspireerd, startte Godfried (Frits) G.M. I'm boutta start hyperfixating on my country's history and culture.
Like, Dutch architecture, Dutch folklore, Dutch history.
I mean the history is awful for the most part, that I already know. But I am interested in the history regarding our fight with the sea, or the way we shipped around tulips. Maybe even the history on a geographical level, like the ground and swamps and stuff.
I'm particularly interested in the folklore. I always thought I didn't know anything of it, but it turns out I know more than I thought about it, because of some comics I read as a kid. Witte Wieven (basically ghosts), weerwolven (werewolves), de bokkerijders (goats with wings and devil worshippers or something), the lange man (apparently we have a version of slender man too? But he would knock on windows and look inside)

Räuber machten Niederrhein unsicher
Moers. (pst) Sozialrebellen, Freiheitshelden oder einfach Diebe und Mörder? Die neue Sonderausstellung im Grafschafter Museum (Kastell 9) wirft ein Licht in die finsteren Räuberhöhlen am Niederrhein. „Echte Robin-Hood-Gestalten sucht man am Niederrhein vergeblich, auch wenn einzelner Räubergestalten später zu Romanhelden wurden, wie beispielsweise der ‚Fetzer‘ oder der ‚niederrheinische Schinderhannes‘ Wilhelm Brinkhoff“, erläutert Museumsleiterin Diana Finkele. Diese beiden Räuber waren schon zu Lebzeiten „Berühmtheiten“, die mit ihren Taten, ihren zahlreichen Gefängnisausbrüchen aber auch mit ihrer Brutalität von sich Reden machten. Der erste in der Ausstellung dargestellte Räuber ist der Franke Charietto, der in der Spätantike am Niederrhein vom Räuberhauptmann zum Befehlshaber in beiden germanischen Provinzen aufstieg. Zur ‚Mehlbeutelbande‘, die viel später aktiv war, gehörten auch viele Frauen.
Ausstellung auch für Kinder geeignet
Gemeinsam ist den Verbrechern, dass sie kaltblütig und zum Teil brutal vorgegangen sind. Die ‚Große Siechenbande‘, die zwischen 1698 und 1712 um Köln, Aachen und Düsseldorf aktiv war, versteckte sich in sogenannten Siechenhäusern und verübten zahlreiche Morde auch für nur wenig Beute, wie zum Beispiel Bekleidungsstücke. Die ‚Bockreiter‘ oder ‚Bokkerijders‘ plünderten zwischen 1730 und 1774 zahlreiche Kirchen und Pastoreien in der Rhein-Maas-Region. Wenig zimperlich ging auch die Justiz mit gefangenen Räubern um: Sie wurden bei ‚peinlichen Befragungen‘ gefoltert, um Geständnisse zu erzwingen. Viele wurden mit öffentlicher Hinrichtung bestraft. Der Anführer der ‚Krefelder- und Neusserbande‘ Mathias Weber endete 1803 auf der Guillotine. Trotz der schaurigen Geschichten ist die Ausstellung auch für Kinder geeignet, die sich über Audioboxen das Thema erschließen können.
Kinofilme, Vorträge und buchbare Angebote
Zur Ausstellung hat Museumsreferentin Fania Burger ein abwechslungsreiches Rahmenprogramm für Kinder und Erwachsene zusammengestellt. Zu erleben sind Filme für junge und ältere Kinofans im Alten Landratsamt, Führungen, Schattentheater und Vorträge. Prof. Dr. Gaby Herchert von der Universität Duisburg-Essen hält mit ihren Studierenden am 21. und 22. Januar ein öffentliches Seminar im Grafschafter Museum über Formen von Recht und Gerechtigkeit im Mittelalter und der Frühen Neuzeit. Zudem gibt es individuell buchbare Angebote wie Gruppenführungen, Escape Games oder Kindergeburtstage. Die Ausstellung findet im Rahmen des Themenjahres ‚Provinz‘ des Niederrheinischen Museumsnetzwerkes statt. Die Ausstellung läuft bis zum 21. Mai 2023.

i keep wishing that my area had like, cryptid myths or something, and then i immediatly remember that it actually does! i just hate them! my elementary school made me watch the goodawful movie 5 times and each time i mentioned it in the near vicinity of my father he goes on a rant about the templers and catars!! everyone else only knows them from the fucking efteling, who for some reason fucked up all the details

Do you know the show De Legende van de Bokkerijders? It’s an kids / young adult historical adventure series from the 90s based on the books from Ton van Reen. I watched it with my family when I was young and it aired on German Tv as holiday special. I absolutely loved it and still talk about it with my family someti because we had such an amazing time watching it together. While not historically accurate it still depicts the events from the time in a good and interesting way and all in all it’s just a very beloved memory and the series still holds a special place in my heart.
