Loving the return of the BNHA reactions - any further updates since vol 36?
yes, actually! so there has been a change of plans! here's the deal:
so as you're probably aware, after all of my fuffering two weeks ago about whether or not to skip ahead to the newest chapters, I decided to roll with the majority of people who advised me to keep plugging away at the old chapters first.
HOWEVER, I'm sad to report I only made it up to chapter 370 before I was waylaid by unforeseen circumstances. said circumstances being that my almost four-year-long streak of being Covid-free finally came to an end last week. 😭 it was good while it lasted. but yeah, that kind of took me out for a solid chunk of days. thankfully I'm feeling better now!
then a couple of days ago, I received an ask from a kind individual who informed me that there were in fact a lot of things happening right now in the manga which are very pertinent to my interests, and which I probably would want to experience and enjoy here in the moment alongside my fellow fans!
so after some consideration I took their advice and skipped ahead to read chapters 404, 405, and 406. and having now done so, I can say with certainty that it was the right call for me and I do not regret it whatsoever! because holy shit, these chapters are life.
so, long story short, I technically still have 33 chapters to go (which I will be resuming this weekend). but also, there's going to be a full-blown chapter 406 recap going up in like an hour or so from now lol. that's just how the dice fell. blame it on the coronavirus sapping away all of my remaining willpower. and Horikoshi for writing three back-to-back wish fulfillment chapters seemingly especially for me. what a generous man.

I know many said All Might had to die cause he is the mentor and the mentors in Shonen always die..... but in MHA Horikoshi likes to twist things up.
It is true that mentors of the main characters usually do die, but it's more towards the middle of the series. If All Might was ever going to die, it would have been at Kamino, but not now towards the end of the series.... it wouldn't make sense. It's been built up that he was going to survive. All Might went to his lowest after losing his powers, we saw him struggle but at the same time, we saw him wanting to live, to be a better teacher, to live fully among his students. Another clue is his eyes. All Might, except for his younger years, had black eyes, and this was to show him losing hope over the years, fighting crime but an end never coming. But in the latest fight his eyes went back to being white, because his students, all of Class A, are inspiring him, instilling hope back in him for a bright future.

The importance of self love in BNHA
Bnha has themes of forgiveness,redemption,friendship,and love (not just romantic! Platonic and family love too),but I think one of the most important aspects of the series is the lesson of self love and self acceptance. The first characters I think of when I say this are Toga and Katsuki,but it's very apparent in a lot of the characters and their development.
Katsuki's journey of self worth:
Katsuki's arc of self acceptance is something I've talked about before,but I think it's important to bring up self love just as much. Because,obviously,Katsuki hated himself in the beginning of the series. Like most bullies insecurity was the biggest reason behind his mistreatment of others. (This doesn't excuse or justify those actions though! It's an explanation,not an excuse) But,he's come a long way from this,he's grown to see other's worth and his OWN. I think one of the most underrated Katsuki moments is in chapter 358 (it's probably because he died a couple chapters after this that it wasn't as talked about as much)
Katsuki himself knows he's different,he understands that he's grown to be better. He's accepted himself. And he doesn't HATE accepting himself,if anything he's proud of it. This is where self love comes into play. Obviously Katsuki's been on a rather difficult journey in accepting his weakness/shortcomings,but with chapter 404 that's when I feel we start seeing the real,100% authentic,Katsuki.
Since Katsuki saved All Might he's been able to accept himself,love him self. And this is IMPORTANT. With Ochako's goal to show how heroes/villains are humans and need to be treated as such,that they deserve love and support,self love would be important,because Katsuki isn't just accepting himself as a hero,but as a person.
Hand Hold:
This is one of the reasons the hand hold between Izuku and Katsuki is SO important. Izuku doesn't think of himself as a human,he's so selfless that it's a negative trait for him. When Katsuki and Izuku have the hand hold in the movie,it's Katsuki taking Izuku's lead,to SAVE to win,this hand hold would be Izuku following Katsuki's lead to seeing himself as human,accepting himself,and loving himself. If we think of the past chapters and when it brings up Katsuki,Izuku is following his lead.
When previously Katsuki was following Izuku's lead. That's why 'save to win' is so important. They're two halves of one whole. They embody the extreme of both sides of the heroic spectrum. One of them wants to win,the other wants to save,and they're the strongest when they do both. The only time they're even stronger than that is when they're working together. This wraps up BOTH of their character arcs. Since Katsuki first started his self loathing when a quirkless Izuku reached out to him,and to completely accept his weakness and past,he has to take quirkless Izuku's hand.
And for Izuku to feel comfort and support as a human,to feel self love,and to see himself as more than a hero but as he has to take the hand of the person closest to him. Katsuki's hand. (Not my words,Afo/shiggy said it!)
Ochako's Hero Journey:
Ochako started being a hero for monetary gain,since she grew up poor and wanted to help her parents. But,she's matured and grown up a lot since then (NOT SAYING WANTING TO HELP YOUR PARENTS IS CHILDISH,I'M JUST SAYING SHE HAS MORE PERSPECTIVE NOW) and now she wants to save/protect the heroes and the villains,to show their humanity. (Which is such a beautiful message that gets overlooked for Ochako's character a lot).
But,of course,Ochako isn't only teaching self love,she's learning it. I feel her crush on Izuku made her want to be selfless,just like him,but she realized Izuku was a HUMAN,not just hero Deku,and she wanted to save him. She admired Izuku so much she felt she had to be like him,which of course she ended up hurting herself because of.
I feel her falling out of love with Izuku shows how much she's become her OWN person and hero,which is what I think Horikoshi's approach was when writing her. Unlike the usual female character who's only important because she's a love interest (in shonen most of the time),Ochako has proven herself as a hero,not just a love interest. Which,instead of being in love with Izuku,she has self love. Now,Toga! Her being in love with Toga is important to the concept of self love as well. Since they're supposed to parallel one another,Ochako falling in love with a villain,someone she wants to protect and save,this is Ochako's hero story,and Toga completes this for her.
With Toga saving Ochako looking like a mix of them is showing Toga's love for Ochako,and vice versa,so it's them loving themselves,accepting themselves.
Toga calling back to the whole "I'm weird" is them both accepting themselves and each other. I mean,their whole fight was about talking about and accepting their feelings. About loving themselves and each other.
These four really show the arc of self love and acceptance that makes this story so GOOD. I also feel this is why so many queer people enjoy Bnha and resonate with these characters.

Which aspects of Katsuki's personality are his honne and which are his tatemae? And which traits overlap? Could you elaborate on that?
In my opinion, almost all the things he does are both, but they are also...not. This is kinda what makes it fun, I think.
Maybe somewhere between DvK 1 and the remediation arc, I'm fairly certain his crappiest pettiness has all been absolutely truthful and honest, but the exaggerated application of it to create a specific impression has been a ploy. I'm pretty sure that it's mentioned explicitly that Katsuki likes people to assume he's dumb and brash before doing something clever so he gets them off guard, and this is kind of like that. It's better for him if others think they know his motive and are framing it as totally petty and selfish. It's not untrue, but it's not the whole truth.
Katsuki also prefers to get his point across in as few words as possible, so if you don't catch a second implication or a ham-fisted double-meaning ("I" and "we" can be ambiguous, so any statements by the end of the manga that are, like, "I'm gonna help Deku!" OR "We [as in all of 1-A, of which Bakugo is now comfortable identifying as a part of]'re gonna help Deku!" are both true at the same time), the message probably wasn't meant for you in the first place.
The most consistent trait I'd say Katsuki always has is sensitivity. He's an extremely sensitive little git, so the biggest shows of his true, unfiltered self always get me because it's when his cup runneth over so much that he can’t put any kind of spin on it: His eyes while captured by the sludge villain (upon reflection, this might be the single most important panel of the manga, actually), him totally failing to grapple with and communicate his feelings to Izuku at the end of chapter 1 (this is a bad example - instead of saying thank you or crying like a little twerp, he totally tried to front it like he didn't need Deku's help, which was about as see-through as a piece of cellophane. Idiot. Still a great moment, though), crying outside the school after DvK1 ("I'll beat you all!" Sure, kid), the moment he hits Izuku in the face during their exam against All Might (there's no freaky smile in this moment - he just freezes and hits him in unbridled anger), the end of the Sports Festival when Todoroki is knocked out - he grabs Todoroki's shirt and is about to have a breakdown (did you know this is my second-favorite moment? Did you know that the US fandom's assumptions about Katsuki's motives in this moment made me want to start beating them to death with my bare hands? Did you know I walked away from this series after that because I couldn't stand how little emotional intelligence people have in the US? Were it not for the laws of this land, I would have killed you, western BNHA fandom), DvK2...
Katsuki's emotions are big. They are probably bigger than he is, honestly. Deku's are, too, and so are several other characters, but that doesn't negate my statement.
I'm of the opinion that Katsuki throughout most of the manga, though not so much after these most recent (404 and up) chapters, is actually quite shy about anything that isn't kicking someone's ass or showing off an ability he knows he can perform well. So, sure, he can perform when ass-kicking just fine, but during interviews or simple conversations with his classmates, he clams up and/or just acts like a total bullshitter delinquent as a cover. He's a sensitive little baby and needed to be treated as such just as much as he needed to be told he could be a little shit sometimes and get his ass beat into the dirt! Both were required!
