every time I log onto Twitter I see the remnants of the DA fandom of 2020 mourning how the fandom is dead and all their friends are gone and I just
how many times can I beg them to just try a different platform without an algorithm. or to pretend discord is a chatroom and not some foreign and completely inaccessible technology. because every day I get to log on and see dragon age filling my feed, and every day I see people creating and talking about DA, and every day I can talk to a whole server full of people just as immersed in the material as I am about lore and fic and art and theories.
Twitter NEVER was the place to get to know people--unless you moved to their shitty dm system. What you miss is algorithm noise tbh, and people's performed personalities. True connection lay elsewhere, and that's why people left as soon as the algorithm really, really, really stopped showing you the people you actually know.

my follower count has been going up and down like crazy ever since I announced that I no longer agree with "vote blue no matter who"
I DID hold that opinion before. And I see why some people still hold it now. It's fear. But we can't change anything if every time someone says "hey our voting system is bullshit and we shouldn't have to choose between two genocidal asshats" you reply with "but we HAVE to keep participating in this system or genocide will happen HERE!!!!"
Casting a vote for your least-disliked murderer is still participating in the system that is causing the genocides. That's why the system has to go.
"Well what are we supposed to DO!?" People everywhere have been trying to organize against this, people have suggested many solutions as to how we can work together and get this shit shut down. But y'all look the other way and ignore it, and you absolutely REFUSE to try to work with us to brainstorm ideas, organize, and take action.
The US is a genocidal imperialist country and its time is up. How many people have to die from decades....well, CENTURIES of war before we decide enough is enough?
How much does the climate need to change before we decide enough is enough? Because let's face it, we all know that the US isn't gonna give up its precious oil - which is pretty much the main reason we keep having wars in the middle east in the first place.
I know you're scared about war happening in our own country.
But sacrificing people in other countries is not the way to go.

"automatic doors are a misogynist microaggression because they emulate men holding doors open for women and women do most of the shopping, revolving doors offer more freedom and convenience for women because they are not microaggressed by them"
speaking of shopping, why don't you actually go try and get a shopping cart full of groceries through a revolving door successfully and get back to me on how well it goes, instead of acting like gender has anything to do with the implementation of automatic doors.
i've literally seen them open for seagulls on at least one occasion. that post is so utterly daft and nonsensical.

Do 8, 10, 21 and 25 for the Bloodborne fandom. I am curious
(Asks from this ( x ) meme)
8) common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
It is kind of a hard question, because opinions are opinions! They are not supposed to be right OR wrong! I suppose that some of them do fall on the territory of lacking perspective, and in that case I'd say insisting on how Yharnam is Victorian London! To be honest, again, everything in Bloodborne is off-brand and Yharnam has several inspirations, but like... there is the Czech clocktower, there is off-brand Nikola Tesla with his inventions, names like Micolash an Iosefka, and there is Polish language on the graves in Hemwick!
Yharnam is as Slavic as you can get come on fdsjdffds
21) part of canon you think is overhyped
Hard to tell, sometimes it feels like almost nothing in the fandom gets enough attention on the contrary! I am not sure if this is just the small fandom problem, or the problem of the source material being too good, but no matter what aesthetic, lore piece or character dynamic got a lot of attention it ALL feels deserved! I used to think that maybe Choir was getting "too much" attention and eclipsed the rest of the covenants in fanart, but again, 1) they ARE interesting and appealing enough and 2) the sense of one hyped thing 'robbing the spotlight' from another is usually a mistake, people are naturally drawn to what they like and if it didn't exist it is not like all that attention would 'instead' go to more neglected bits! In other words, everything in Bloodborne deserves its attention AND more!
25) common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing
Kinda tired of the complaints about how Maria and sometimes other female characters are drawn! Not because they are not true, but because they never will REACH their target audience! People that draw Maria with big hips and tiddies and no hint of strength simply do not GO on the websites like Tumblr or Twitter! I don't really see the reason of recycling this complaint specifically in the spaces where people that do draw female characters like this will not even receive this feedback. I can't be 100% free from hypocrisy on this one though because I also sometimes vagueblog rather than addressing what I disagree with directly (in my defence though usually it happens because I physically can't message the person fdhhfds).
But basically, it feels like people have trapped themselves with the whole "never offer unsolicited criticism" mentality and thus can't post criticism UNDER those inaccurate fanarts. The 'treat others like you want to be treated' can and WILL be a bitch, so we're left with frantic posts about how this or that character should be drawn, in the place where everyone already draws this character accurately, so it gets jarring! I am an asshole that will go in people's DMs about drawings to tell them that Henryk's skin is not so pale, that Damian/Yurie/Henriett/etc have grey eyes and not blue and that Malenia is NOT built like Barbie doll so maybe this is why I do not understand the point?
10) worst part of fanon

20 questions
i was tagged by several people (thank you @niemalsetwas, @babblish, and @creativenicocorner), who in doing so have conveniently eliminated many of the people i would have thought to tag myself, haha. let's see... @falling-hand-in-unlovable-hand, @eri-223, @sidhewrites, if you like? plus anyone else who would like to steal.
1.) how many works do you have on ao3?
41 posted; 0 drafts.
2.) what's your total ao3 word count?
189,246. (?!)
3.) what fandoms do you write for?
oh, ask not for whom the hyperfixation tolls. (toa, obviously.) i do have a few fics i've deleted, though, in fandoms i don't currently have any fics for. maybe i should republish them on anon? 🤔
4.) what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
in my sleep i dreamed of waking
all that dazzling dawn has put asunder
it's a lovely day in stricklake month
misc. trollhunters prompts
sophisticated/manipulated
oh...they're (almost) all str/icklake, lol. and so old! is it strange that i feel so disaffected by this? well, probably not. a good lesson in kudos being merely a measurement of "how many times people pushed the kudos button," i suppose.
5.) do you respond to comments? why or why not?
i try to! part of my general attitude of "fandom is a conversation." i worry i don't always have all the spoons to make my replies what i feel they "should" be, but i do always want to convey my gratitude for people taking the time to leave a comment at all.
6.) what's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
oh, that's easy: notstantinoplefic! unfortunately it's not yet approached something even remotely publishable, so that probably means very little. ¯\_( ᐛ )_/¯
other than that...probably the first or second parts of minor arcana. probably the first, more than the second. skrael's chapter ends on something awful but he's about to enjoy a good bit of (however fleeting) catharis; bellroc however doesn't get any closure for what happens in their chapter until they meet nari, a couple centuries later.
7.) what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
...do i have a fic that doesn't have an ultimately happy ending? 😂 oh, i am too soft. even the horrible vicious ancient wizard gods tend to go out with full stomachs, warm beds, and someone on their side.
8.) do you get hate on fics?
i'll not lie: i have glimpsed the occasional drama from over my meticulously-curated rose hedge. but most of it seems to be from children, and for all my various weaknesses, i think i can survive being vagueblogged by people who aren't old enough to vote. if not: my anon is on ╮ (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.) ╭
9.) do you write smut? if so, what kind?
i am ATTEMPTING. most of the smut i've ever read has left me generally ??? baffled, glazing over, skipping through (without animus) to the next part. again, this is not the fault of the author; it's true even of things i can tell objectively are well-written, titillating, otherwise universally acclaimed. but i enjoy thinking about character exercises, and i am not completely untemptable, so this year i've been trying to make some progress on my longtime agenda of "get the horrible bird wizard railed."
...none of which is terribly apparent given that none of it is published, ofc! but. hopefully. that may change in the not-too-distant future.
10.) do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?
tbh i am very picky about crossovers. but i must admit... skraelroc necro/cav au... a man is Considering
11.) have you ever had a fic stolen?
i've had people repost my art, which (as someone who does not think of himself as an even remotely skilled artist) was very surprising. but never fic.
12.) have you ever had a fic translated?
none that i know of.
13.) have you ever co-written a fic before?
the closest i've ever come is probably blue wizard boyfriends, which is inspired by some rp shenanigans between a friend and me. but even so, my take on douxie in that series has diverged quite a bit from hers! so it doesn't really feel like "cowriting."
14.) what's your all-time favorite ship?
as your #1 friendly neighborhood degenerate not-even-actually-incest pornographer, i simply must say: nothing quite hits like a ship you literally invented
15.) what's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
to be completely honest, i do still feel the occasional pang of nostalgia for my gr/avity f/4lls fic. i had a lot of world built for it, a whole sequence/interaction arc for the characters (and not just the couple). unfortunately, even this many years later—even if i never got directly harassed—the nastiness of that fandom has still left a very strong impression on me. it was the first time i think i ever saw a/ntis in action, and i don't think i have any desire to pick that story up again.
16.) what are your writing strengths?
...worldbuilding? present tense, apparently. 😂 i've also been told i have a knack for—ah, how did he put it. understated emotional closeup shots? i think of such kind comments often, haha.
17.) what are your writing weaknesses?
discipline. not using too many semicolons. recently: not using paired adjectives. mainstream fanon. not going back over published work and finding a billion small things to fix (though i'm getting better at this).
18.) thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
...mainly: "you're lucky i didn't make myself learn actual ancient egyptian for all those dumb little skraelroc shmoop fics i keep setting in ancient egypt"
otherwise? i err on the side of under-doing it, but i love doing this. i love seeing this in fic, even if it's not a language i know. it's like a little easter egg!!
19.) first fandom you wrote for?
a very old anime fandom which i will not be revealing on main. probably twenty years ago, at this point. almost certainly on ff.net.
20.) favorite fic you've ever written?
oh, i'm not sorry. i am thinking of minor arcana so often these days, but i really am pretty proud of it. even now, more than a year later! once i have the time to go through and fine-tune everything, i'm going to bind it. it's a very weird fic, probably, but one that is nevertheless (or perhaps because of this?) very dear to my heart.

Hi! Sorry if this is complete out of the blue (feel free to just ignore me!) I was one of the ppl talking in the tags of your kids fiction post and I just wanted to 1) apologize and 2) clarify my statement to mean I think fiction that means the most to me is about Duty and Obligation and shouldering the burden of Goodness for its own sake, not that ~all~ good fiction needs to be morally pure and instructive and all that (absolutely not I need rancid villains for Fun and My Health). You're so right about the awful purity anti culture surrounding art where nothing can be ~problematic~ and that's not what I meant at all! (Again sorry if this is weird or too forward since we've never talked? You're friends & mutuals with a lot of my friends & mutuals so I hoped it wouldn't be TOO weird/bad 😓)
OK so first of all absolutely not weird to reach out ever at all don't feel awkward and secondly and more important if I can be honest this is why I shouldn't be allowed to blog at one in the morning because all I end up doing is being slightly irritated by something I mostly made up in my own mind and vagueblogging about it and it's rude so there's absolutely no need to apologize and I'd like to apologize actually for doing that because it was a twat move.
That makes total sense what you're saying and it is a banger set of themes for sure! I guess I'm always a little bit wary of anything that seems like fiction purity culture so I tend to lash out and again that wasn't fair of me at all.
And again absolutely not weird! We are I think defo mutuals-in-law and even if we weren't asks are never weird unless you're the guy who sent me one this morning telling me exactly why he blocked me in detail that was a little weird. Otherwise, fine.
I hope you're having a good time of it, and your day goes well! And thank you for saying something (positive and helpful and communicative) and I'm sorry for saying something (derogatory, early morning grouchiness).

i don't like that solas vallaslin rewrite scene post because a) a lot of solavellan writers have tried addressing that or something similar and it always makes me roll my eyes when we all forget the classic takes and repackage them as new, b) a lot of people on reddit and tumblr and elsewhere have wished for the same thing, c) it always misses the even bigger problem with the vallaslin scene to me.
in that scene, solas stops short of telling you that the gods were evil.
the marks might have been slave markings that were turned, over the ages, into marks of pride and belonging in the culture of the Dalish. and that story is about the Dalish surviving, persevering, and clawing back what makes them connected to their past, when the world would stamp them out.
That's a great story and one that should be respected. Solas acknowledges this twice.
But the vallaslin isn't just a mark of adulthood and a mark of being Dalish. To them, it is not tied to escaping slavery -- because the Dalish don't know that story, until Lavellan finds out in the grotto from Solas that the vallaslin were slave markings.
The vallaslin are dedications to the gods.
To the evil gods who are very much still a threat to Thedas, and very much Solas's enemies.
The more and more we learn about the Evanuris, the more and more the religious practice of worshiping the Dalish gods stands out. The Dalish are very religious. Your Lavellan might or might not be, if you headcanon--and many players aren't religious, or at least are agnostic. Maybe to your Lavellan this is solely about the 'slave marking' part of what Solas tells her in the grotto.
But there is enough dialogue in DAI that Lavellan *can* be very devoted to the gods. And throughout the other games and media, worship of the Dalish gods is important to their culture. With the gods not being locked away forever, not being dead and distant, and being very much evil, that practice feels like the real problem behind the vallaslin scene.
Yeah, I think Solas is "shackled to the past" but not about this. We don't know what his plan really is, we don't know what he really cares about so much in elvhenan that drives him to bring about an apocalypse now. We don't know fully what he thinks was better, or worth bringing back, or worth undoing, besides the 'magic used to be everywhere and we didn't used to hate spirits' bit. There's more to it than that, that we have yet to see.
But we DO know he views the Evanuris as his enemies; we know from him, and from much of the supplemental material (Hi, Hormak) that they were incredibly cruel and monstrous to their people; we know they are not dead, and they are not permanently locked away; we know that they may be unleashed in the future. The Dalish worship them, and dedicate themselves to them, and invoke them in their lives.
We have the very ominous phrase: "Belief makes you more."
From a Bioware-critical/fandom angle, it is uncomfortable to tell a group heavily coded as indigenous and ancient that actually, all of their history is a lie. It's uncomfortable to tell them that actually, Historically Oppressed Group, you were once just as bad as the people who oppress you now.
Sure, you can change the formula of the vallaslin so he can't take it off of Lavellan. Have Lavellan say with even more gusto that now she'll take this knowledge back to her people, so they can truly celebrate all that they've overcome and reclaimed.
That doesn't change that this is a deeply religious group and a religious practice tied to the biggest threat to his past, and to the future.
I think it's a very surface level reading to think that Solas looks at Lavellan and sees 'slave.' She is indomitable, she is Dalish, and he has said before what he admires about her--and her people.
With all that we know, it seems like it's so much more than that. And I think it's pretty shallow to ignore that.
Fans have tried to headcanon this away in a million directions. A popular one: "What if the 'Evanuris' were just really powerful mages who had taken on the names of the true elven gods as an intimidation factor? That way the Dalish aren't ACTUALLY worshiping evil beings, and their whole culture isn't a lie." Sure! then Solas is 'shackled to the past.' If you headcanon that, then the vallaslin and the names of the gods were never really about the Evanuris, so no harm done that the Dalish still worship them. Solas is totally in the wrong for wanting to remove the marks of slavery and god-dedication from Lavellan's face.
There are other options. But yeah I think a lot of these 'rewrites' miss or forget beyond a really surface level understanding of Solas, the Dalish, and religion lol.

Now, I know she's in NOLA for a convention from the 6th, but is there any reason we should keep an eye on the fact that Emily Swallow is there a bit early?
Could just be like, the first thing post holiday and wanting to enjoy the culture in general, Nola is a hell of a place. I fully admit I have not put a tack on what to expect out of Amara. I expect it addressed some way since the whole 19-20 sendoff was bungled so MANY general ways. I expect them to not actively undo as much as reframe, but. Idk. Idk if that literally involves her or not. That would be. So very. very interesting. ending the darkness that we all fear. black queen. it'd fit in very well in 12-13 depending on usage, while fixing whatever tf vagueblog God Power was with Chuck. Get to see those two off. Get to touch on babygod Jack, but hopefully not put The Weight Of the World on him. etc.
Like, it's spec, but the math checks out, sir.
If people wanna know what my spec looks like, rather than shit that is just. the truth. this is what my spec looks like, for the record, just so nobody gets that twisted.
It all shuffles in quite well between the cracks, since jack made it loud. Etc. Then we get our new Humanity(TM) and The Moon(TM) whether that be dark side of the moon, foggy side of the moon, bright blue skies side of the moon or is that all just a matter of perspective(TM). heaven and earth etc. You get it. [jazz hands]
couldn't pin down exactly how big how loud or the exact way it slots in but. Seems Legit.

I love being vagueblogged about not being "politically pragmatic" by someone who simultaneously acknowledges that there are more than two options on a ballot and also says there are only two options to choose from.
Look, I'm not blind to the fact that it's very likely that a Democrat or Republican will win this election, and the next election, and likely even the election after that. But the only way to even attempt to make sure that the election after that can be won by literally anything else is to first acknowledge that more than two options exist. That is quite literally the bare minimum.
These same people who will continually beat the dead horse of "there's only two options" will, at the same time, bitch and moan about the one of these two options that they picked, complain about how fucked up the system is for only having two options, tell everyone that we need to fix the system to have more than two options, etc. But then election season rolls around again, and like clockwork we hear the same tired bullshit from these people: "Vote Blue No Matter Who" and "This is the most important election in history!!"
And like clockwork, y'all will vote for the Big Blue Man y'all hate to love and love to hate, and then we get another four years of bitching about how no progress is being made to resolve this situation. Meanwhile anytime even so much as breathes the idea that other options exist, you scream them down and repeat the same tired bullshit mentioned above.
So yes, a Democrat or a Republican will very likely win this year, and the next, and the next. But if you continue to refuse to acknowledge any other possibility, then you are quite literally part of the problem.

something something gender blinders something something the limits of written vs visual medium are that Vic can go out of his way to say “hey look France keeps killing the people who care most for her future, ex: these two martyr-types that I am going to give exactly the same character design ,  but Note The Disparity in lives and opportunities and education that come with gender and background even , wow it’s like there’s a Point here” and still an alarming number of people will go “oh well I guess these parts of the story aren’t connected at all, these similarities mean nothing, and also no, we don’t  see why Javert should ever think twice about Eponine”
