A lovely, late career abstraction by Konrad Cramer, 1962. Cramer played a brief, but very significant role, in the development of modernism in the US. A German immigrant and member of the Blaue Reiter, Cramer was one of the first artists anywhere to paint abstractly. Recently, an early work of his set an auction record at Christie’s. #konradcramer #modernism #blauereiter #artoftheday #interiordesign #abstractart #abstractexpressionism #paintingoftheday https://www.instagram.com/p/By2m4E-g2UO/?igshid=1zweidsioacn

"Stony Path [Mountains/Landscape]" 1911/12 oil on canvas by Franz Marc (1880-1916) at @sfmoma the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Written near the painting: This painting depicts a jagged pathway through the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. Marc's planes of harmonic hues draw the eye up toward a high horizon line and bring orange sun. The artist began and publicly exhibited the painting in 1911, under the title "Landscape." But, he reworked it the following year after a visit to Paris, where he encountered new approaches to painting such as the use of prismatic colors and abstract geometric forms. #franzmarc #marc #stonypath #blauereiter #cubism #prismatic #oiloncanvas #oilpainting #sfmoma #first7 #first7week (at SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art)

“Blocks,” by German-American artist Konrad Cramer. Although not particularly well known today, Cramer was one of the first to paint abstractly, not just in the US but ANYWHERE. This work, painted in 1913 and appearing at Christie’s American art sale, is one of his earliest. Cramer was influenced by Kandinsky and was a member of the Blaue Reiter before coming to the US. Please contact us for other early examples of his work. #modernism @christiesinc #artadvisor #artcollector #americanart #abstractart #abstraction #paintingoftheday #blauereiter https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxvmw8cgYSZ/?igshid=rcqpnasmbh2v

Kandinsky
Over the course of his artistic career, Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) transformed not only his own style, but the course of art history. From early figurative and landscape painting, he went on to pioneer a spiritual, emotive, rhythmic use of color and line and is today credited with creating the first purely abstract work.
As much a teacher and theorist as he was a practicing artist, Kandinsky's interests in music, theater, poetry, philosophy, ethnology, myth, and the occult, were all essential components to his painting and engraving. He was involved with both the influential Blaue Reiter and Bauhaus groups and left a legacy not only of dazzling visual work, but also of highly influential treatises such as Concerning the Spiritual In Art. Key tenets included the connections between painting, music and mystical experience, and the purification of art away from material realism and towards an emotional expression, condensed in particular by color. This book presents key Kandinsky works to introduce his repertoire of vivid colors, forms, and feelings. Tracing the artist's radical stylistic development, it shows how one painter's progression paved the way for generations of abstract expression to come.

Takahata Isao – A Legend In Japanese Animation Exhibition
I visited the Takahata Isao – A Legend In Japanese Animation exhibition held at the National Museum Of Modern Art ( MOMAT ) in Tokyo some weeks back. It was one of the best exhibitions I saw during my stay.
The extensive exhibits guide the viewer through several decades of the late director’s career, with illuminating insights into his art and vision. In some ways, the exhibition is also a spotlight on the history of Japanese animation, as Takahata-san was certainly one of the pioneering figures of the medium.
No photography is allowed within the exhibition proper ( with the exception of the Heidi diorama ); some of the pictures shown below are courtesy of the manga website Natalie.mu.

The Isao Takahata Retrospective exhibition offers an illuminating study of the late director’s working methods, thought processes, creative influences and more. And there’s a Heidi diorama ! Easily one of the best exhibitions I’ve seen on this trip. Did I mention dioramas ? #anime #ghibli #isaotakahata #tokyo #高畑勲展 #東京

(image below) The exhibition catalog contains art work and write-ups of everything on display. Unfortunately the book has not been listed for sale yet on Amazon Japan, but they do tend to show up eventually. I’ll post a full review of the book when it does.
This exhibition runs till the first week of October 2019, so if you’re planning a trip to Tokyo within this time frame and love anime I highly recommend you visit ! Here’s the museum page for the exhibition.
I also have a couple of Isao Takahata art books reviews that you might be interested to check out.
