Matthew Brandt takes pictures of lakes and other bodies of water and makes standard C-prints of them. Then, he submerges the print in a bath of water thats been collected from the lake where the picture was taken. Overtime, the print starts to degrade and the colors separate, creating chromatic swirls and abstractions that blend the original image with the materials of the print itself.

I think that this is a really interesting way to work because I love the exchange that is happening between the subject and the material. The water depicted in the image is also leaving its physical mark on the image. I also like how the colors and shapes that the water creates are completely unexpected and accidental. When the water is allowed to interact with the print, the artist is surrendering their control of the finished product that will be created, which gives the piece greater meaning.

With this project, Warburg created a visual reference system that was far ahead of its time. With @the_warburg_institute Roberto Ohrt and Axel Heil have now undertaken the task of finding all of individual pictures from the atlas and displaying these reproductions of artworks from the Middle East, European antiquity, and the Renaissance in the same way that Warburg himself showed them, on panels hung with black fabric. Aubrey Beardsley (1872–98) epitomized the Art Nouveau design sensibility that rocked Victorian England in the nineteenth century. His spooky, seductive images were both controversial and reflective of the time. During his short lifetime—Beardsley erupted onto the scene as an untrained prodigy at the age of nineteen, and was prolific until his death from Tuberculosis at the age of twenty-five—the artist aligned himself with living writers of the time, most notoriously Oscar Wilde, whose play Salome he illustrated in fluid, abstracted natural forms. This pairing solidified Beardsley's place as a leader of the Art Nouveau movement. Beardsley died on March 16, 1898, in Menton, France. The first edition of ‘The Art of Aubrey Beardsley’ was published ten years later, in 1918, prefaced by two introductory texts by Beardsley's friend and collaborator, Arthur Symons. When Frida Kahlo died in 1954, her husband Diego Rivera asked the poet Carlos Pellicer to turn her family home, the fabled Casa Azul, into a museum. Pellicer selected some paintings, drawings, photographs, books and ceramics, maintaining the space just as Kahlo and Rivera had arranged it to live and work in. The rest of the objects, clothing, documents, drawings and letters, as well as over 6,000 photographs collected by Kahlo over the course of her life, were put away in bathrooms that had been converted into storerooms. This incredible trove remained hidden for more than half a century, until, just a few years ago, these storerooms and wardrobes were opened up. Kahlo's photograph collection was a major revelation among these finds, a testimony to the tastes and interests of the famous couple, not only through the images themselves but also through the telling annotations inscribed upon them. Warburg dealt intensively with the interaction of myths, images, and rites from different cultural contexts and set new standards with his method: he rearranged canonical alongside unknown images and considered them across epochs. ⠀ ⠀ The large-format illustrated book now being published and the future exhibition at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (postponed until autumn 2020) restores the last documented version of the 1929 atlas almost completely with the original illustrations.
