"Stony Path [Mountains/Landscape]" 1911/12 oil on canvas by Franz Marc (1880-1916) at @sfmoma the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Written near the painting: This painting depicts a jagged pathway through the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. Marc's planes of harmonic hues draw the eye up toward a high horizon line and bring orange sun. The artist began and publicly exhibited the painting in 1911, under the title "Landscape." But, he reworked it the following year after a visit to Paris, where he encountered new approaches to painting such as the use of prismatic colors and abstract geometric forms. #franzmarc #marc #stonypath #blauereiter #cubism #prismatic #oiloncanvas #oilpainting #sfmoma #first7 #first7week (at SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art)

"Composition (no. III) with Red, Yellow, and Blue" 1935/1942 oil on canvas by Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) at @sfmoma the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Written near the painting: In its original finished state in 1935, this abstract composition contained fewer elements and was less colorful than it is now. Mondifian initially titled the work "Composition (no. III) blanc-juane" and exhibited it in New York. Seven years later, after he had emigrated from Europe to the United States, he returned to the canvas and added the blue vertical form at the bottom left and the two small, unbound red squares above it. He also retitled the painting in English, "Composition with Red, Yellow, and Blue" and described the additions as "bringing in a little boogie-woogie." #pietmondrian #mondrian #sfmoma #modernart #nonobjective #boogiewoogie #oilpainting #oiloncanvas #first7 #first7week (at SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art)

"Still Life, 1952 oil on canvas by Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) at @sfmoma the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Written near the painting: A painter of the everyday, Morandi used common subjects鈥攂ottles, boxes, the view from his studio window in Bologna鈥攖o investigate the most fundamental issues of painting and perception. This still life, from a series of eight, depicts slightly asymmetrical objects that cast few visible shadows but seem to quaver on the canvas. Morandi no doubt understood that the ambiguity and banality of these odd vessels would encourage viewers to shift their focus to the picture's softly luminous surface and the lusciousness of the paint itself. #giorgiomorandi #morandi #sfmoma #stilllifepainting #oilpainting #oiloncanvas #first7 #first7week #everyday (at SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art)

"Still Life (Violin and Candlestick)" 1910 oil on canvas by Georges Braque (1882-1963) at @sfmoma the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Written near the painting: Before Braque dedicated himself to this experimental mode of painting, known as Analytic Cubism, he was a daring colorist. But around 1908 he turned away from landscape painting and removed bright colors from his pictures in favor of a palette of dull browns and beiges. Here Braque depicts ordinary household objects in a classic cubist style that breaks them into angular facets and makes them difficult to identify. If there's an in-joke to this still life, it's that it hardly sits still. The fractured forms and planes pulsate with vitality, the motifs coming in and out of focus as if our vision is taking shape. #braque #georgesbraque #cubism #prismatic #stilllife #sfmoma #sanfrancisco #oilpainting #oiloncanvas #first7 #first7week 2 of 7 #dailyritual (at SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art)
