I recently placed a name on the full ache I’ve lived with for 20 years. I’ve called it homesickness and diaspora blues. Truth is, I’ve grieved for 20 years. That’s half my life. All the time, I created a shiny parallel life while badly nursing the shock of almost-but-not-quite-perhaps-definitely-no-not-yet losing another life. They call us “voluntary migrants” and that stings. Life pushed us out here ... and we were equipped for it (the right skills etc) but emotionally numbed out and grieving. This year, I turned 40 and decided it was time to transmute the pain into joy. How? I returned, as close as I could, to the historical source of the pain and looked it straight in the eye. This is when it gets tough. When you have to understand the nature of the carrot that's placed in front of you that you'll be chasing that only a few will get. It's designed to break your spirit and sense of autonomy. They know you must survive so they give you just enough to lay your head down to rest before you get up to chase more to keep that little bit. - solution? Start a business. Find a passion and make it profitable, preferably in service to others for their betterment. It's how you learn to duck the trappings of the system, ownership. Colonizers speak in ownership and influence and until the system is toppled, you need a table so they can come to YOU. Acquire tangible and sustainable assets, things that will hold value the longest. Know that it may get more difficult because they don't want us to start circumventing their setup. Often I feel torn between worlds as I've gone to embrace my indigenous ancestry, we hid in the culture of one side of the family and spoke little about who and what we really were. Now that I've chosen to take steps towards decolonization, learning about my roots has changed my views and thinking. I grew up steeped in black liberation though I knew we were also natives, but I never made a connection. Once it came together, it sometimes feels like I'm betraying others when I bring up native issues to advocate for. Luckily, folks remind me I'm not part anything, my pinky toe is not the part that's native, my left eye is not the part that's black. All of me is black, all of me is native. I shouldn't have gone 30 or so years not getting that. Now I know better, I'm doing better. Some of my ancestors were highlands Maya. Via migrations we ended up in what is now the southern United States of America. Funny thing, most of us still look similar to this relative. This country however, classifies us as "African American" despite being of indigenous descent mostly *no telling who married in during the wars. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Blackness is more complex than they've programmed folks to believe.
