As with Patch 5, I have compiled my favorite Patch 6 patch notes (the exciting ones and the hilarious ones) so you don't have to.
First of all, the Highlights section has some VERY nice QoL changes:
"You can now dismiss a recruited companion from your party while speaking to the companion you want to replace them with." (Fuck yes, this is such a small annoyance but it really adds up over time.)
"When a dialogue triggers automatically, the game will now try to prioritise your avatar character as the main speaker." (I spent literally like half an hour trying to ensure Hector got the conversational lead when walking into the vault with the Stone Lord for my liveblog post, so this fills my heart with DEEP joy.)
"The Elixir of Hill Giant Strength now applies its effects when thrown." (HUGE deal for Hector's party in my liveblog, as @zenjestrr has pointed out to me - Jaheira can hurl it onto Hector, Karlach, and Minsc together!)
Some general happy-making improvements (some for things in Act 3/epilogue that I haven't gotten to yet but which sound very positive):
"Your partner now has a few different kisses! They're brand new, unique, and randomized."
"If you sit on the stool in Shadowheart's camp corner, she will now react to you with a line based on your relation with her."
"Improved the cinematic scenes in the Elfsong Tavern to feel more intimate when you and your romance partner decide your future together after defeating the Netherbrain."
"Reworked the reflection scenes that take place after wrapping up the defeat of the Netherbrain for characters without romantic partners to better match the scenes for those who do have romantic partners, and to bridge the gap into the epilogue."
"Added a new cinematic scene to support the combat encounter that occurs after you choose whether to side with Nightsong at Sorcerous Sundries or not."
"If you romanced Lae'zel, grab a red dragon and saddle up - you can now join her in the rebellion against Vlaakith, even if you are not gith yourself."
"Increased the number of valid methods of knocking Minthara out to recruit her."
"Tooltips for spells requiring concentration now more prominently display a warning if you are already using concentration to maintain another spell."
And now the bits that just made me laugh. XD
"If you Long Rest with only alcohol as camp supplies, you will now get the new Hungover condition for 10 turns."
"The Long Rest camp supply menu is now better at pulling supplies from inside containers in companion inventories. Stop hoarding the cheese, Wyll."
"The owlbear cub will no longer gobble up Auntie Ethel's Hair before you can take advantage of the bonus it grants." (???)
"Creating harmful surfaces beneath NPCs will now trigger a crime reaction."
"Scratch can no longer equip certain weapons. Like the Everburn Blade."
"Jaheira could be in bad shape by the time she arrived at Moonrise Towers since she already had to fight. Now she's smart enough to heal up before she goes there, which we're hoping lets her last at least an additional second in combat."
"Fixed dice roll sounds playing if you have the 'Hide Failed Perception Rolls' setting enabled while exploring. We asked the narrator to quieten down when rolling the dice for your immersion."
"Fixed a bug causing player characters to get deleted from the game after stealing the Blood of Lathander."
"Enemies are now less likely to summon a Skeletal Involucre in range of a Spirit Guardian that will immediately destroy it."
"Nere's Legendary Action now correctly triggers when he is attacked, rather than when he attacks. Cut him some slack - being a True Soul is a lot of pressure; we'd all get confused in his shoes."
"Told Fezzerk to stop throwing his bombs on himself and his allies."
"The Apostle of Myrkul's Finger of Death spell is now treated as a Level 7 spell instead of a cantrip."
"Fixed Steel Watchers sometimes hurting themselves with their own attacks."
"Invisible characters who have something to say in a dialogue will now remember to actually show themselves."
" Throwing NPCs into a chasm will no longer trigger their crime reaction dialogue while they're mid-flight."
"Jaheira could have access to two types of Wild Shape in certain circumstances. We've toned down her blatant disregard for D&D rules."
"Fixed NPC heads occasionally detaching in Forced Turn-Based Mode."
"You can no longer place a corpse into its own inventory."
"Items can only be sent to specific companions in camp if a party member is in camp at the time. Stop sending every +1 dagger to Gale, he's not that hungry."
"NPCs should be a lot less eager to engulf themselves (or their allies) in flames now."
"Fixed NPCs using an incorrect throw range when they can't move. This sometimes caused them to, say, throw explosives on their own heads."
"Fixed NPCs sometimes successfully landing jumps that shouldn't be possible. Like through ceilings."
"You can no longer trade with sleeping characters."
"Fixed overhead dialogues still playing above the souls of dead characters - represented as blue wisps - in the epilogue camp. Lae'zel will no longer urgently proclaim 'Repositioning!' when you make her little wisp move around."
"Killing Omeluum or Blurg of the Society of Brilliance will now break your paladin oath. Because they're nice and you're not."
"Picking up fish from the beach at the Emerald Grove is no longer a crime. They take their vegetarianism very seriously, those druids."
"You can now no longer spawn infinite fish at the Emerald Grove beach. No wonder that bear smells."
"Told Art Cullagh to please stop singing during the combat when Isobel's being abducted."
"You can no longer trade with Voss when he ambushes you at the base of High Hall."
"If you escape prison and then return to your cell and close the door without being noticed by anyone allied to the arresting guards, you will no longer be considered a fugitive."
"Fixed a bug where a status could carry over from the final battle to the beginning of the epilogue, potentially killing the players."
"You can now clean your body and clothes in a fountain in the House of Hope's boudoir. Sometimes it's nice to freshen up before a big event."
"Fixed Scratch not feeling like playing in camp beyond Act I after partying too hard at the camp celebration."
"Minthara no longer speaks more about Shadowheart than Shadowheart does about herself."
"You'll no longer see text telling you that Gale approves of something if he's not even nearby to see what happened."
"Jaheira's memory in her old age was failing her, and she could tell you about Minsc twice if you left her in camp but advanced her quest multiple steps. Now she's much better at remembering what she told you, and will only prompt it the once."
"Good boys Scratch and the owlbear cub will now play together in any camp, not just the main one in the wilderness from Act I."
"Cerys will now leave your camp after the camp celebration in Act I. We know it's sometimes hard to ask the last person to leave the party, so we've done it for you."
"Fixed Rugan being upset with you for trespassing after saving him from impending doom. You're welcome, Rugan."
"Florrick now looks appropriately grimy and sweaty after escaping Waukeen's Rest."
"Lae'zel will no longer become hostile towards you, thinking you left the inquisitor's office in Crèche Y'llek while waiting to fulfil Vlaakith's orders, when you only jumped on one of the platforms in the corner."
"Fixed Smythin in the Goblin Camp sometimes getting stuck in a cowering animation. He's a little braver now."
"Rugan is no longer 'too busy' to thank you after you free him in the Zhentarim Hideout."
"One of the teenagers in the Crèche Y'llek will now tend to his cleaning tasks. He may or may not have been chastised for shirking his duties."
"Fixed a bug with Bernard in the Arcane Tower not giving you a reward if you previously befriended the squirrel in the Emerald Grove."
"Fixed a couple of goblins in the Goblin Camp not really doing much at all if you free Sazza."
"Rotated Barth and Remira near the Emerald Grove gate so they would shout in the right direction."
"The nurses in the House of Healing have remembered that they are capable of speech and will now react to crimes properly."
"Dame Aylin now permits all players to behold her radiance in the cutscene when ascending from the Shadowfell rather than just the one who freed her."
"Isobel and Marcus will no longer stop their epic confrontation at Last Light just because someone commits a petty crime nearby."
"In rare cases, Jaheira could be Frightened in the combat with Ketheric and end up so scared she doesn't show up to resolve the conflict in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. She now overcomes her terror."
"Bards can no longer say they saved Jaheira's Harper scouts when they did no such thing."
"Fixed some guards by the fountain at Last Light who were trying to speak each other's lines."
"Now you can convince Ch'r'ai Har'rak to go away in different ways."
"Mayrina will no longer still be Bloodless in Act III if Astarion bit her in Act I."
"Wyll no longer leaves the party when you commit a crime in the High Hall. With the city in ruin, the petty crime dramatics seemed a little extreme."
"A few more people around Baldur's Gate will notice if an article has been printed about you in the newspaper."
"Lumbar will no longer react as if you didn't pay for the privilege of hitting him if the single strike had different damage types." (Ah this explains why Hector got that weird reaction. XD)
"Vicar Humbletoes will no longer do a weird shrug before praying."
"Prevented Karlach's death scene from triggering if a solo player chooses to detonate while playing as Avatar Gale."
"Fixed Lae'zel talking inaccurately about Ptaris, for example suggesting he's dead when he's... literally right there."
"Auntie Ethel will no longer send you a letter written by Zevlor in the epilogue."
"If you part ways with Shadowheart and hide in the Underdark as a mind flayer, she won't forget and think you've spent the last sixth months together in the epilogue. Classic Shadowheart, always forgetting things."
"The Emperor will no longer send you a cheerful letter in the epilogue camp if you ate his brains."
"You can no longer invite the owlbear cub to live with you and Halsin in the epilogue if you do not, in fact, live with Halsin."
"Fixed avatar characters incorrectly getting assigned the Dream Guardian's skin colour in Character Creation on controller."
"The fish barrels in the Underdark, that clearly look like they have fish in them, now actually contain fish instead of tarts."
"You can no longer casually go walkies in the middle of a chasm in the Decrepit Village in the Underdark."
"Removed a platform in Grymforge that looked like it was accessible and was tricking a few of you into trying to jump on it to access the Gauntlet of Shar."
"You can no longer disappear into a couple of rocks near the mephits in Grymforge. Sorry."
"Added a new animation for Cranium Rats. They can now stand up on their hind leggies."
"Corpses thrown from your inventory now look dead rather than alive. As is right."
"Fixed missing sounds in Active Search. (We found them hidden under some rocks in Act I.)"
"Fixed a basket of onions claiming to be a fruit basket, and other issues with lying baskets."
"Gave the dogs at the Sword Coast Couriers names. Because they're the best boys."
"Lae'zel no longer slides or teleports away during her Epilogue dialogue."
"Made general improvements to Boo's animations. The hamster is a little less jittery."
"Fixed the goblet flying out of your hand when talking to Jaheira at Last Light. We knew you were suspicious of it, but you don't have to be so dramatic."
:D
This is a tiny fraction of the full set of changes/improvements/fixes listed in the patch notes and once again I am tremendously impressed. As I said last time - this game has a breadth of scope and ambition that repeatedly takes my breath away and I am mindboggled at the amount of work being put into it.
Very excited to finish out Act 3 in the coming weeks!

on the topic of the whole netshow thing and sports netshow questions being in offline. i know you've talked about that a bit before but did you find some sports netshow screenshots of the same questions (god, if only...) or is it a "it definitely seems like it would be" thing like with the nate lines?
there are bits that feel Off for Cookie to say, like the line where Cookie says he's from Arkansas. Cookie has one of the more defined voices and it's def not an Arkansas sounding voice. Nate has multiple country-isms as well as implying he's participated in pig catching (along with Buzz) so it'd make more sense it was him that originally said it.
with the Sports Netshow-vibe questions, there's multiple Jack Attacks about sport terms and team locations that just feel so align with Sports rather than Gen Ed. there's also the Billie Jean King question, but I think not only was it redubbed but also changed to fit Cookie. Cookie acts arrogant about BJK, prompting her to kick his ass, but Guy states in Sports he's a massive fan of hers. like autism levels of adoration (good for him). the question feels like something Guy would say, but the closer joke was changed since Guy is less headstrong than Cookie is. and it'd make no sense for Cookie to gush over BJK
one of the rare question number segments IS one from Sports if you wondered. I got really lucky getting it, since I thought only Vol. number segments were included in the throwbacks. never got one for TV or Movies, that's all.

Billie Jean King on Victories Past, and the Battles to Come
Tumblr media
The more Billie Jean King talked about the past, the more animated she became about the future.King, the 79-year-old grand champion of tennis and gender equity, said she wanted to see more investment in women’s sports. More teams. More leagues. More women owners. More racial diversity, more data, more access and more opportunities. She charged crosscourt from one topic to the next, not content to celebrate the history she had made; she was too busy creating the template for tomorrow.“Equal investment is the most important thing,” she said during a telephone interview from London, while attending this year’s Wimbledon. “If I talk to a C.E.O., I ask him, or her, or whoever, ‘Do you spend as much on women’s sports as men’s sports?’ That’s the magic question.”It always has been. This summer marks 50 years since the United States Open awarded equal prize money for men and women, becoming the first of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments to offer it. King, who won 39 major titles, made that milestone possible with her relentless activism and by securing corporate sponsors behind the scenes. On the eve of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup — set to showcase the rise of women’s soccer and the movement for equal pay, led by the U.S. Women’s National Team — King’s influence still ripples through the sports ecosystem.“She is working as hard today as she was 50 years ago,” said Stacey Allaster, the United States Tennis Association’s chief executive of professional tennis, and the first female director of the U.S. Open, said. “And she’s so focused, I would say possessed. She’s continuing to live by what she believes: that sport is for social change, and it’s not what you get, but what you give.”King and her wife, Ilana Kloss, who is also her longtime business partner, have invested in six sports. In June, it was announced that Billie Jean King Enterprises would help run a new six-team women’s ice hockey league starting in January along with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ majority owner, Mark Walter, and his wife, Kimbra Walter.“We believe this is transformational, and it’s a sport that hasn’t had the platform that we believe it needs,” said Kloss, 67, a former doubles champion from South Africa and the chief executive of BJK Enterprises.Although she admitted that the path to establishing a successful women’s hockey league has been a “long road” (one that’s littered with past failures), she applauded the Walters’ commitment to women’s sports. “That belief sends an incredible message to the rest of the investment community,” Kloss said.Flashback to 1970 when King and eight other players, outraged the men were earning more than eight times the prize money that the women were at one tournament, signed $1 contracts to form a offshoot professional women’s tennis tour. The women, known as the “original nine,” risked being banned by tennis officials, but the gambit worked. In 1973 at Wimbledon, King led players in a vote that created what is now called the Women’s Tennis Association. It was a heady time for women’s sports. In 1972, Congress enacted Title IX, which prohibited sex discrimination in schools and thus led to the creation of sports programs that spawned a generation of female athletes. Against that backdrop, King, No. 1 in the world, won the 1972 singles titles at the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.In New York, she was incensed to earn $10,000 — $15,000 less than the U.S. Open men’s champion, Ilie Nastase, did. King recalled how she met then with the tournament director Bill Talbert in a referees hut.Turning her chair to face him in the tiny space, she argued that a fan poll showed massive interest in women’s tennis. Then she revealed her ace: She had secured a sponsor — Bristol Myers’s “Ban” deodorant — to make up the difference in total prize money. Equal prize money became official in 1973.A few weeks after the 1973 U.S. Open, King crushed former No. 1 Bobby Riggs in the Battle of the Sexes spectacle that catapulted gender equality onto a world stage.“It’s hard to believe that 50 years have gone by — boink!” King said. This year’s U.S. Open, starting Aug. 28, will mark the equal prize money anniversary in multiple ways, including posters of King, an opening night tribute and an “equity lounge” on the site of the United States Open in Flushing, which in 2006 was renamed the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. When she’s on the way to her office there, Allaster touches a sign bearing King’s motto: “Pressure is a Privilege.”Allaster, the previous chief of the WTA, said King was an “accessible leader,” not just for her, but for rookies and superstars alike. Allaster called Venus Williams a “modern-day Billie Jean King” for how, during her prime, Williams lobbied Wimbledon officials — and by extension the French Open — to award equal prize money to women.King’s advocacy has always transcended tennis. She started the Women’s Sports Foundation in 1974 to develop sports opportunities for girls and women post-Title IX. After she was publicly outed for being gay in 1981 and lost many of her endorsements, she later became an activist for gay rights.Phaidra Knight, a World Rugby Hall of Fame player and past president of the Women’s Sports Foundation, said King created an inclusive culture at the group. “Through that LGBTQ+ lens and her courage, she has inspired courage in many other lanes, for people to work together,” Knight said in an interview.Beyond King’s encouragement of her as a Black and gay woman, Knight said she valued how King taught her to approach rugby officials to improve business opportunities for the women’s game.Angela Ruggiero, another past president and a former women’s ice hockey Olympian, has also followed King’s lessons. She co-founded the Sports Innovation Lab, a market research company that uses analytics to understand digitally savvy sports fans. Her research shows that fans of every gender are responding to women’s sports. She has frequent brainstorming sessions with King, who never stops asking questions.“We’re going back and forth on how do we bring more capital into women’s sports,” Ruggiero said. “She’ll be at the edge of her seat, fired up. It’s just her nature to be an agent of change.”King said she secretly advised the soccer player Julie Foudy and eight of her teammates in 1995 to hold out for fair contracts and get the younger players behind them. The team won the 1996 Olympics and ignited the frenzy for women’s soccer by winning the 1999 Women’s World Cup before 90,185 fans in the Rose Bowl.Twenty years later, Megan Rapinoe led the U.S. women to another World Cup victory, this time with the fans chanting “Equal Pay.” In 2022, the women’s national team settled its gender discrimination lawsuit against the national federation for $24 million, and a pledge to equalize salaries and prize money.Last month, Rapinoe talked at a news conference about how the 2023 World Cup would be a game-changer for women’s sports, showing that “equality is actually good for business.”King chuckled.“Every generation thinks they are the first to say this — it’s fun to listen to them,” she said. “I’m glad we’re on the same page trying to get things done.”As always, capital is key. She and Kloss — who joined the celebrity ownership group of Angel City Football Club of the National Women’s Soccer League in 2020 — were encouraged by Y. Michele Kang’s recent $35 million purchase of the league’s Washington Spirit.“We need more people to continue to step up,” King said. “If you look at everything now, it’s the billionaires. And then you look at the Middle East, that’s going to be another thing.”In a news conference, King supported the WTA’s exploration of funding from Saudi Arabia, which has already bought in to professional golf with its LIV Golf merger with the PGA Tour. Although she acknowledged the country’s discriminatory policies around women and homosexuality, she told reporters, “I don’t think you really change unless you engage.” She added that this was her opinion. “I’d still probably go and try to talk with them,” she said.Engagement has always been King’s life philosophy, along with knowing your history. She’s not ready to finish writing hers.In November, King will turn 80.“She really has a sense of running out of time,” Kloss said, “and she can’t get enough.” Source link Read the full article

6 and 17! What goes around comes around >:)
ohohoho i feel so loved all these asks
6) how is your life different now from two years ago
Hmm ok so July two years ago I’d just graduated from school and I thought I was about to go do History at university (katie perhaps you know it bjks) and now I’m doing a degree in Stage Management at a completely different college with a completely different atmosphere!! It’s been a big big course correction and one that originally felt like it was coming out of a lot of failures but i’ve come to the conclusion that i’m happier and probably a more pleasant person as a result of where i am now and how i ended up there
(this isn’t shade on anyone who may be at my first choice of university and is kindly asking me questions on the internet, they’re a lovely and pleasant human being who I love!! It’s more a commentary on my own personality and general personal growth - I used to rely way too much on being an Intelligent Person with Intelligent Thoughts and it made me a little unbearable and has been something that going to my current school has kindly knocked out of me a bit in a way that traditional academia wasn’t going to - it’s not something inherent in all academics but something i found i could get away with in that environment)
There’s a few other changes - I think my relationship with various members of my family has evolved a lot over the last two years in various ways!! I’ve begun to treat my brothers more like brothers than uncles and vice versa, and I think i generally get on with my family better than I used to, which is nice! In particular I’ve started talking to an uncle of mine again. That being said, living on my own and going to counselling has also made me a bit disillusioned with my dad, although we’re still very close and i still love him a lot! I’ve also had a lot of practice at keeping up long distance relationships which I sorely needed.
As a person I think i’m probably less self-assured than i was two years ago, and less competent but i also think I might be more self-aware (i think that actually goes hand in hand with the self-assured thing). My self esteem isn’t necessarily better or worse, it just fluctuates a lot less than it used to. Also (tw for some dark thoughts) in July 2018 I think i was still in a mindset where I was very set on finding specific things to live for, and now i see a much longer future for myself, which has changed how i approached a lot of things.
Oof sorry that was a long one but in summary in july 2018 i had a lot of markers for success and now that i’ve failed to meet most of them and found that I’m still alive i’m probably happier and have less of an ego (still working on that second half)
17) what ‘small things’ things terrify you
we have a mouse problem at the moment and i’ve discovered that even though I used to have pet gerbils i find the concept of small things in my room that I can’t control very upsetting!!

BJK (sfw) for Tamaki Amajiki please (If you don’t write for him, then Deku instead?) thank you!!!
absolutely! here ya go
Tamaki Amajiki
B/Best Friend (what would they be like as a best friend? how would the friendship start?) - It would definitely have to be started by you, because of his extremely shy nature. Even as a best friend, he would remain quiet, not because he doesn’t want to talk to you, but because he’s just a quiet person. Despite this though, he’s fiercely loyal, and will go through great lengths to try and protect you.
J/Jealous (would they ever get jealous? how would they act if jealous?) - He doesn’t get jealous, more so insecure. He’ll assume that you think he’s a burden, that you don’t want to tolerate him anymore, so he’ll become even more skittish than normal. You’d have to reassure him plenty that that isn’t the case.
K/Kisses (how would they kiss you? where do they like to kiss you? where do they liked to be kissed?) -  His kisses would be very soft and light because of his nervous nature, and even after a long time dating, he’d still engage more sweet kisses than super hot and passionate ones. He would prefer to simply kiss you on the cheek or forehead, and likes kisses in those places as well, especially the forehead or the top of his head.
requests for everything but matchups are open!

ALL RIGHT, YA HOOLIGANS ( @aspecialprovidence, @gentlegrace, @lipstick-and-shotguns, and @delanceyxbrothers - not you, @angeliatheturkishdelight, you’re an angel and we’re thrilled you’re here :’DDD ) BUCKLE UP BECAUSE
HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON SARP AND DRUGS
First of all, we know Sarp was a difficult kid to raise.  He caused trouble in school (his teacher in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL tells Nilufer Sarp had a good week because he didn’t fight anyone or escape from school), had (has) anger issues, and his dad not being around was A Huge Thing.  So I definitely think there was a heaping dose of teenage rebellion going on (fighting! brushes with the law! drinking! girls! at least one piercing! possibly tattoos (he doesn’t seem to have any in canon but it would not surprise me in the least if he did)! zooming around on a motorcycle!), BUT I don’t think drugs were part of it, and HERE IS WHY:
- SPORTS ARE LIFE.  When Sarp was a kid he legit decided a BJK player was his new dad.  His room’s still covered in sports posters, boxing’s his main hobby, and he seems incapable of passing a soccer game without joining in.  Also, have you seen what he looks like?!  :’D  He’d stay away from drugs for the same reason he wouldn’t smoke--he wouldn’t want to risk his fitness.
More proof?  Our #1 canon authority, ABI himself, who said, “Now Sarp, who I’m playing, is physically relying on himself.”  Working out is about more than having fun or looking good--it’s about protecting himself.  And it’s hard to protect yourself if you’re addicted to anything.
- MONEY.  Sarp and Nilufer sometimes have trouble just paying the rent--ain’t nobody got extra cash for drugs.
- A RELATED SUBJECT: According to my thorough research (a 10-minute google search), marijuana is expensive in Turkey, but The Thing among poorer kids (at least several years ago--Sarp would have been 15 in 2005) is sniffing paint thinner or glue.  Now, Sarp does make some hasty decisions, but HE KNOWS BETTER THAN TO START SNIFFING CLOTHS SOAKED IN STRANGE SUBSTANCES.  GOOD JOB, SARP.
- EVEN if that seemed like a good idea--Nilufer’s a nurse.  You can bet he’s heard about drug use consequences 54038304 times, PLUS he knows she’d be more likely than most parents to catch on to him using anything.  Also, Turkey has strict drug laws, and he’s not eager to spend several years in jail--both because it would Not Be Fun, and also (and more importantly) because he wants to protect his mama. <3
- On a related note: until he meets Maral, Sarp legit only cares about two people: Nilufer and Taso.  He’s friendly towards other people, but he doesn’t run with a big crowd--even at Luna, it’s Taso and Maral and Asli bringing in the other employees, we don’t see Sarp having close relationships with them on his own.  And it sounds like even as kids it was Sarp and Taso against the world.  So I think it’s unlikely that Sarp would have fallen in with a group that offered him drugs.  (I see him as someone other people see as cool and interesting, but not “popular”.  He’s not afraid to interact with anyone, but I don’t see him hanging out with other people outside of school/work, either.  Our man ABI talks about the “masks” Sarp wears here--and I think the “cool kid” act is one of those masks.)
- And finally, speaking of masks: Sarp’s a lot smarter than he lets on.  Even though he’s got a hot temper and tends to be impulsive, he also shows that he can play the long game, both in terms of getting revenge and winning back Maral.  And yeah, as a teenager he’d be less mature and experienced than he is an an adult--but I think that even if he did run into a situation where drugs were accessible, he’d be smart enough to realize that the effect on his body + risk of jail time + lack of money + potential addition + Nilufer finding out + getting in the way of his plans wasn’t worth any kind of high they could offer.
END OF ESSAY, but LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!

Programming object lesson of the day:
A couple days ago, one of the side project apps I run (rpthreadtracker.com) went down for no immediately obvious reason. The issue seems to have ended up being that the backend was running on .NET Core 2.2, which the host was no longer supporting, and I had to do a semi-emergency upgrade of all the code to .NET Core 6, a pretty major update that required a lot of syntactic changes and other fixes.
This is, of course, an obvious lesson in keeping an eye on when your code is using a library out of date enough not to be well supported anymore. (I have some thoughts on whether .NET Core 2.2 is old enough to have been dumped like this, but nevertheless I knew it was going out of LTS and could have been more prepared.) But that's all another post.
What really struck me was how valuable it turned out to be that I had already written an integration test suite for this application.
Historically, at basically every job I've worked for and also on most of my side projects, automated testing tends to be the thing most likely to fall by the wayside. When you have 376428648 things you want to do with an application and only a limited number of hours in the day, getting those 376428648 things to work feels very much like the top priority. You test them manually to make sure they work, and think, yeah, I'll get some tests written at some point, if I have time, but this is fine for now.
And to be honest, most of the time it usually is fine! But a robust test suite is one of those things that you don't need... until you suddenly REALLY FUCKING NEED IT.
RPTT is my baby, my longest running side project, the one with the most users, and the one I've put the most work into. So in a fit of side project passion and wanting to Do All The Right Things For Once, I actively wrote a massive amount of tests for it a few years ago. The backend has a full unit test suite that is approaching 100% coverage (which is a dumb metric you shouldn't actually stress about, but again, a post for another day). I also used Postman, an excellently full-featured API client, to write a battery of integration tests which would hit all of the API endpoints in a defined order, storing variables and verifying values as it went to take a mock user all the way through their usage life cycle.
And goddamn was that useful to have now, years later, as I had to fix a metric fuckton of subtle breakage points while porting the app to the updated framework. With one click, I could send the test suite through every endpoint in the backend and get quick feedback on everywhere that it wasn't behaving exactly the way it behaved before the update. And when I was ready to deploy the updated version, I could do so with solid confidence that from the front end's perspective, nothing would be different and everything would slot correctly into place.
I don't say this at all to shame anyone for not prioritizing writing tests - I usually don't, especially on my side projects, and this was a fortuitous outlier. But it was a really good reminder of why tests are a valuable tool in the first place and why they do deserve to be prioritized when it's possible to do so.

lessons learned from BJK
don’t wear your heart on your sleeve or fall in love too easily/quickly
observe the other person
don’t rush in relationships or in life
take care of yourself, your needs, your family, before you think of others
love yourself!
be confident!
just be yourself!
don’t care about what others think as much
it’s okay if you have your own unique quirky habits, hobbies, interests
slow down to really take in and absorb the beauty of each moment and of what’s around you
enjoy each moment!
work hard to be the best that you can be and to contribute to doing good in the world
rely on and trust in God
spend every day in His Word and in prayer
build up your network - of people who you can call on to help you if you’re stuck (he connected with his friends in the field, and some past colleagues and such to help him when he didn’t know how to solve something)
don’t show that you like someone until they are devoted to you and win you over. play coy and hard to get. guys like the chase.
don’t do any physical things until in a committed relationship
learn to trust and put down
don’t just take someone at their word. observe their actions.
always be willing to take critiques so that you can learn from it, improve, and be better.
ask for regular meet up time (at least weekly) with supervisors and superiors to check in with how you’re doing (performance, but also what things want to work on, goals, etc)
be wary of how workplace treats you -- whether you’re learning from the workplace, or they’re just using you for your work
know who you are, so that you don’t need a personality test to tell you
be quick to pick up on people’s behavior and find ways to build the bridge to connect with them or be chill or make them comfortable
always ask before doing things, to see if they are comfortable with next level of intimacy (physical, emotional, spiritual, etc)
don’t do anything first - let the guy be the one to pursue you
don’t give in with small gestures... wait until he really proves himself
organize your photos (google photos)
organize your documents. scan and upload to google drive.
scan all your notes in to an accessible online/hard drive so that you don’t have to carry around all the books and papers and notes
get ebooks vs actual books that take up space
don’t eat just vegetables. add some protein for energy...
your cells need the energy from protein in order to function well
be a nerd! be knowledgeable about a lot of things
look things up, even if on wikipedia and be a treasure trove of knowledge
don’t be naive... guys do not like that and it makes you less attractive
don’t be jealous or nitpick about things... guy don’t like that
don’t dwell on insignificant details because it’s a waste of time and mental energy and emotions and you’re destroying yourself by doing so
don’t just chase after fun and adventure. there’s value to being boring but stable to take care of things in every day life
find joy in the small things - even grocery shopping together
be efficient, productive, and protective of your time
do everything you can to take care of your life and make sure you have your needs and will be financially stable
look into and invest in stocks (different stock markets DOW, Jones, korean, international, US, etc) which will build money passively over time
(he has AT&T)
know your finances and have a good handle on it -- be stingy with money and always think about using it...
find good deals to save money (Jcrew shirts for $8, the desk lamp for $7 that came with free LED energy saving lightbulbs, travel deals that give you free changes so you can change destinations and go to different more expensive places for the original cheaper price)
thunderstorms and rain sounds are relaxing  and good for background noise
think broadly and big picture
be wise about what words you say - say little then. for everything you say will be counted upon you
don’t say everything that’s on your mind. THINK before you speak. RESPOND instead of react. FILTER so you only say positive things or in a way that is encouraging to others
SEEK WISDOM more than knowledge
don’t just try to please people. it gets tiring and you lose yourself
delete the app and find someone you’re already friends with since you have a hard time trusting strangers
don’t do too much or too quickly for the guy... don’t treat them like boyfriends or husbands too early on and if they don’t deserve or work to get there and earn your trust and care and devotion
don’t be with someone who is passive aggressive and tries to make you jealous (he did...)
cursing is unattractive
don’t be with someone who’s also afraid of bugs like you are
from Terry: find a man who will protect you, provide for you, be a good role model to future children, be masculine and manly and traditionally take on that role (doesn’t mean you can’t be a feminist)
find someone who is not conflict avoiding and averse.
don’t be with someone who makes decisions based on their emotions, but rather thinks things through logically and rationally
no one wants to be with an emotionally unstable, mentally unstable, naive and easily deceived person-- will be cause of stress and trouble
find someone who has their life together, know who they are, what they want, and chasing after their dreams and goals
LOVE YOUR LIFE!! do things that you love and that bring you joy (traveling, photography, time in nature, readings)
keep up to date with the literature (read a few times a week), even if just for leisure (he would just go to to a park and sit under a tree or on a bench and read literature)
keep up with articles in your field to be the best and up to date
find ways to connect with your partner by sharing interesting articles or information or things to do or your hobbies
be humble and don’t brag about your successes, but acknowledge God’s hand, provision, and grace throughout it all
use your talents and gifts and steward them well, to use it for God’s glory and to bring good to the world
SLEEP!!! that’s how you get energy and rejuvenate your brain cells and it helps you remember things and be smarter
know when you need to take a rest
when you have down time, there’s value in taking a nap or long sleep, to rejuvenate yourself
he said he would work, then eat, then just sit down on his couch and be still and listen to peaceful guitar music to fully relax, and then go back to doing more work until sleep.
always take a shower when you sweat and at nighttime so you can wash away the day’s grime... even hair (not just body) everyday because hair absorbs things quickly
learn to SYNTHESIZE and PROCESS
when he was working, he would skim (or his brain just works fast to absorb that knowledge) through articles and youtube videos, then just sit and think and process (i thought he fell asleep, but he was just thinking and analyzing and sorting through the information), then he sat up and started making his presentation
eat a balanced diet, exercise, take vitamins, be healthy
don’t just do things without thinking. LEARN the information and commit to memory and know how to apply it
always be wanting to learn more and improve yourself to be the best and most competent person. that’s where his confidence came from, his competence, well roundedness, many hobbies, lots of knowledge in his brain, taking care of himself well
be wary of concerning signs from the beginning - trust your gut instincts
watch out for someone who is critical, nit-picky, high-maintenance, or someone who doesn’t know themself well and just going along with other person because then they seem boring
think about the ways of living... he said he doesn’t want to live in korea because people’s lives are so hard... you work hard, but don’t earn much and don’t have must of a chance to buy your own house and create your life and achieve your dreams. (limited job market, everyone’s hardworking and intelligent, rent and housing is so expensive and unaffordable so people continue to live at home)
don’t just divulge information or be vulnerable with them because you can’t trust them or know that it’s safe with them and won’t be used against you
think about your security, and make yourself anonymous (lol his spotify is kyakyakyakya... and he said in the past, he would use usernames with hello kitty... protect his anonymity)
he was studying
have perseverance -- he spent almost a year doing DAILY Duolingo in Spanish
be adventurous! be like a tourist in your own town --> going to explore, check out new places
life is an adventure and try to make the most of it!
he wanted to learn all the major language (english, spanish, arabic, mandarin chinese, russian, french) - [also portugese and german would be good to know to elevate career]
be good with geography and how to get places
think about ways to elevate your career and yourself
be light-hearted and make jokes, even self deprecating ones, because it means you don’t take yourself too seriously
don’t be with someone who withdraws from you, and makes you feel invalidated, doesn’t show appreciation for you, or takes you for granted
don’t stifle a guy by acting like their mother... they don’t want another mom...
and they don’t want a child to raise up.. so be mature and responsible and don’t rely on the guy to fix all your problems
let them play a part in helping you out and make them feel needed
respect and love God --> during his worship service, even though it was virtual, he would still stand up, sit down, close eyes, lift hands, pray
love doesn’t tear down, but covers over wrongs and encourages and lifts up with care and patience (he just kept tearing me down with everything i needed to work on)
a wise person doesn’t just blab about problems to every one... they will think through things themselves, figure out what’s right/wrong, and make the decisions themselves.. don’t just empty talk.. but if need advice, only secretly tell people you can trust to keep the secret and give wise counsel
don’t just spend time with people and hang out and talk with them... have your own interests and hobbies and things you can share with others (instead of you passively going along with others). THAT’s what makes you interesting and worth being around... guys don’t want just a copy cat or follower, but someone who they can also learn from and be inspired by and respect because of how great woman is
be mindful of your time, energy, resources.. it’s okay to spend time by yourself in order to get things done that you need to get done
learn to enjoy your own company and love yourself and your own company. make goals for life that you achieve, seek out adventures to expand your life and perspective, build relationships with people everywhere (network), be positive and uplifting and work hard, keep in contact with people, learn things to build yourself up (which also attracts other people to you)
don’t be co-dependent. guys do not like clingy girls with no personality
don’t project blame onto the other person
don’t compare in the relationship (to past relationships or to other people in life).. that just degrades any chance of the relationship
relationships take PATIENCE and the best ones have longevity
take time in getting to know someone and trust someone. don’t just spill all your secrets out, because then it gets boring when there’s nothing left to tell or share
give out breadcrumbs, but have them take the bait
but you also don’t want to be with someone who only give crumbs while you give whole bread... relationships and the effort must be reciprocated and you want someone who will be devoted to you and the relationship, not just half into it because they’re more focused on themselves or their career or other things than you
korean guys “play nice” and will not give a straight no, but postpone things or say open to staying friends because don’t want to be the bad guy and flat out reject... but then they’re not clear in communication...
he’s trying to constantly improve his language skills as well, taking the TOEIC and TOEFL exams, studying GRE vocabulary daily to expand his english skills
perseverance and diligence -- he goes through several pages of GRE vocabulary daily, makes post-its that he puts on the wall to help memorize, and he revisits them... he already went through the book twice, and was going through it a third time to commit to memory all of the vocabulary

A Review of the Daily Show
On May 5th, 2016, The Daily Show, ran by Comedy Central, posted a video interviewing some of the USWNT members asking them more questions about why they feel they deserve to be paid more. The satirical talk and news program had their uncanny reporter, Hasan Minhaj, question three members from the USWNT in an ironic sort of way. Initially, he is posing questions with a comedic ignorance, which if not watched carefully, the viewer could miss the humor within it. Minhaj begins his segment with a voice over saying, “I sat down with three members from the U.S. Soccer team to find out why they are being so greedy.” I have to admit, that put me off to begin the show, but as it continues, the plot unfolds and it is revealed that by using ignorance, Minhaj allows the girls, Becky Sauerbrunn, Hope Solo, and Ali Krieger, to fact check him and explain where they’re coming from in this ongoing debate. They then move onto the numbers of things, (see https://dcwhite8asu.tumblr.com/post/166973066998/what-exactly-is-this-pay-difference-that-everyone for more information) and they dicuss the possibility of having a second job on top of being a professional, world-class athelete -- which is just not possible.
In an attempt to explain the other side of things, Gavin McInnes, notoriously known for his right-wing talk show, comes onto the show and talks to us about why the USWNT has no room to complain. McInnes states in his interview, “You're playing a man's game by man's rules, this is the way it is in our world. You gotta earn it.”
After further research, he was set up in this video to look like an extremist, but he is still a meninist to no end. McInnes is a very well educated man, with valid points, he just has an old-worldly point of view on things that people like myself and Billie Jean King don’t agree on. The queen of sports equality was interviewed following the disaster with McInnes and she had a lot to say. BJK fought hard to earn equality in pay for tennis players in 1973 in a “Battle of the Sexes” against Bobby Riggs, which she won and made progress for women athletes everywhere. One of my favorite things that she said in this interview with Minhaj is, “we’re supposed to be so grateful if we get just one crumb, ‘oh thank you.’ No, we deserve the cake, the icing, the cherry on top just like the boys.” BJK was a pioneer, and she is rallying around the girls of the USWNT to help gain acknowledgment and support from the same people who supported her and many others.
After the interview with BJK concludes, the USWNT members are featured in a mock up promotional commercial, comparing the men versus the women in a tragicomical fashion. As Sauerbrunn, Krieger, and Solo are showing off their talent on the field, there is a voice over playing, setting the tone by saying, “You can be great… You can make history… You can aspire to be less than… You can be just as good as any other person, as long as that person doesn’t have a penis.” With this ‘commercial,’ they wrap the video up by making a play on Nike’s slogan with, “You can treat us equally, you can give us grass to play on, you can pay us what we deserve, just f@#%ing do it.”
This video offered fact checking with a twist of ironic humor that stuck out in the viewer's mind. Yes, there was some bias about Gavin McInnes, but then again, that is up to the viewer about where they stand and what that means to them. This platform for the USWNT has impacted a multitude of people, as 568,000 people have watched this video and the team has since made great strides in their equality fight. It was a very clever way for the team to make themselves even more known.

HELLO FRIENDS, I HAVE EXCEPTIONAL NEWS AND IT IS THAT @pandolfo-malatesta AND I HAVE GIVEN SARP A CAT 💪
(which he will strongly deny, but EVERYONE KNOWS BETTER)
Her name is Şahan (after Olcay Şahan, his favorite BJK player) and of course she’s the team colors:
Tumblr media
She showed up behind Luna one day, and now Sarp brings her food and talks to her and pets her and sneaks her home when it’s cold (Nilufer totally knows) and she comes when he calls and he still strongly denies she’s his, or that he even LIKES cats, but HE IS WRONG.
...Which, secretly, he doesn’t mind.
