fandom: high school musical pairing: troy/gabriella chapter: 1/1 words: 19,500+ (oops) summary: The only puzzle Detective Gabriella Montez hasn’t solved is how she feels about Troy Bolton. Or, someone prompted me to write Troy and Gabriella as Jake and Amy from Brooklyn Nine-Nine and they unleashed a beast.

“So, where should we go on our date?”

“Huh?”

Gabriella looked up from her case file to see a pair of bright blue eyes staring down at her with mirth. As she blinked in confusion, her co-worker’s mouth curled up into a satisfied smirk as he gestured behind him.

“Scoreboard.”

Gabriella grimaced as she took a look at the whiteboard he was pointing at.

Bolton – 59. Montez – 52.

She didn’t even know how she got roped into doing this bet, but at this point, she didn’t really want to lose. It had all started when Danforth had been enthusiastically (but slightly creepily) boasting about how great a detective Bolton was. McKessie – bless her heart… or not – had disagreed profusely, believing that Gabriella was clearly the best detective in the precinct, nay, the entire NYPD. Somehow, their argument had ended in Gabriella and Bolton agreeing to a year-long bet. Whoever would make the most arrests in a year, would win. If Bolton won, they would go on a date, and if Gabriella won, she would get his pick-up truck.

The pick-up truck wasn’t that great. It was old and broke down often – Bolton claimed he once went on a road trip from his hometown Albuquerque to California in it, though, but Gabriella didn’t believe him –, but on the other hand, anything was better than public transport.

However, the final month of the bet was approaching and at the moment, she was losing, so she wouldn’t get the truck anyway. But a date with Bolton was much worse.

Not that she hated Bolton, though. She just couldn’t figure him out. When around Danforth, Baylor and Cross, Bolton was always loud and cocky. However, he was always sweet to her despite his constant teasing. He even often told her about his problems with his father, sharing details he claimed Danforth, his best friend, didn’t even know about.

Despite the cockiness and the teasing, he wasn’t all that bad, really. Besides, Captain Darbus seemed to have taken a liking to him and he was close friends with Kelsi Nielsen, the mousy, shy civil administrator, so there must have been something about him and Gabriella was curious what it was.

That absolutely did not mean she wanted to go on a date with him, though.

Hi, everyone! It’s been a long time since I did one of these. Ever since quarantine started I became, once again, a lot more active on this blog. With that and also because of the follower milestone I reached, I thought it would be a good idea to do a follow forever.

i have no idea when you sent this, because i didn’t get a notification, so sorry if this was a long time ago lol!

i actually quite liked the show a lot more than i expected to. i’ve always been very against anything new happening with the hsm franchise, so i was very cautious, but this was just far enough removed from the original for it to work for me. i really enjoyed ricky and nini’s chemistry; joshua and olivia had impossibly big shoes to fill, but they did a good job! i also really love gina.

i have a lot of issues with its fandom though, so i try to stay a bit away from it these days lol.

also, not aimed at you, but here’s a friendly reminder that you can find me on @bisexualsharpay for hsm (and sometimes hsmtmts) meta :D i prefer to keep it separated from my main blog usually, so i thought i’d add this!

do u think sharpay and ryan were the villains of hsm?? bc like they started acting at a young age, their dream was acting and theater and they were known as the theater kids and for someone (who doesnt take acting very seriously) to take that away from them would be so devastating, like doing something for all your life and having that one thing that defines you taken away is so tragic because like if you arent known for that one thing then what are you?

I don’t know if I’d call them villains, because the term villains implies inherent evilness and I don’t think either of them are necessarily evil. They are absolutely antagonists (Sharpay moreso than Ryan), but villains… I think that’s a big word.

However, while I think that there is something to be said for their points of view, like you indicated, I’m not sure whether it’s actually a justification for what they (especially Sharpay) do. Sharpay does some really unnecessary shit, and while I get why she does it, it doesn’t justify the fact that she does it. So… I don’t know. I wouldn’t call them villains, but I wouldn’t say their antagonistic actions are justifiable either.

While we’re on the topic of antagonists, though, I assume you’re mainly talking about the first movie (as Ryan definitely isn’t an antagonist in the sequels anymore) and I’d like to add that if we consider Sharpay and Ryan antagonists, we should consider Chad and Taylor antagonists in the first movie, too, as they also oppose Troy and Gabriella and what they do to them is, in my opinion, much worse than Sharpay and Ryan trying to get Darbus to move the callbacks. Of course, Chad and Taylor realise that they were “mean jerks” quite soon after they played their scheme and move to the “good side”, but I think we should definitely acknowledge that they would fall under the category of antagonists in the narrative of HSM1, too, and that what they did was kind of shitty.
