When the human tendency to detect patterns goes too far (Shayla Love, Psyche, Sep 19 2023)
"Nabokov was describing an extreme case of apophenia, or the tendency to experience events as meaningful, even when they shouldn’t be.
Also called patternicity, ‘it refers to essentially anytime that you are seeing patterns in the world that don’t exist,’ says Colin DeYoung, a professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota. (…)
The word ‘apophenia’ comes from a German neurologist, Klaus Conrad, and his 1958 book about the symptoms of schizophrenia.
While an epiphany is a sudden realisation of a true connection or meaning, an ‘apophany’ is the false realisation of one.
The psychoanalyst Carl Jung used what is perhaps a better-known term, ‘synchronicity’, to describe instances of apparent connection between co-occurring events with no clear causal relationship.
More than just coincidences, they take on powerful meaning in a person’s mind and appear to be a result of more than chance.
In one example, Jung’s patient dreamt of a golden scarab and, as she described the beetle, Jung heard a tapping on the window of his office.
There, he found a live scarab beetle, which he grabbed and handed to her.
Psychologists have found an association between apophenia and openness to experience, one of the ‘big five’ personality traits.
Openness to experience reflects a general tendency to be curious about the world.
As a 2020 paper by DeYoung and colleagues explained, one aspect of openness to experience ‘encompasses fantasy-proneness and aesthetic interests’, whereas another aspect, sometimes called ‘intellect’, reflects ‘intellectual confidence and intellectual engagement’.
In many contexts, openness is beneficial and can contribute to creativity.
But the component of the trait related to aesthetic and fantasy engagement also seems to be associated with increased risk of some of the symptoms of the psychosis spectrum, such as unusual perceptual experiences, DeYoung and colleagues have found.
They report evidence that apophenia could be ‘an important cognitive mechanism at the core of what is shared between openness and risk for psychosis.’
Seeing connections all around you can also be predictive of belief in conspiracy theories and the supernatural, a study from 2017 suggested. (…)
There is always a trade-off.
People need to be able to detect important connections in the world, rather than missing them, and being sensitive to patterns helps with that.
People who are high in openness and more prone to perceiving patterns ‘might see things that other people might not notice’, DeYoung says.
But sometimes, a sensitivity to patterns can fool us. Minimising the risk of the false positives would inevitably lead to more false negatives, DeYoung notes: ‘You’re always stuck with some kind of balance.’"

The nostalgia of being fan of RotBTFD ( ꈍᴗꈍ). If I hadn’t met this fandom I surely wouldn’t have been very interested in meddling with my artistic side, not only that, I would ignored the beautiful fanfics and fanarts of many talented artist. I remember that I liked to ship anyone of them, and to be honest, it was funny to see the discussions of the reason why the ships made sense xD. Anyway, I don’t know if this fandom continues (although apparently the fandom of Jelsa’s ship continues) but I am grateful for this innocent teenager stage lol.
Maybe later I’ll be encouraged to make more fanarts of them

I saw that you ship poly big 5 on a post so can I ask how you think it all started?
of course!!
I'm actually shaky on that myself. When I think of them there's mostly a before and after and no middle. I'd love to hear your thoughts though, and other b5 fans' as well!
the thing is, they are high school boys. with b5 content I have a lot of 'he would not fucking say that' moments, and there's nothing wrong with an interpretation where the guys are more... emotionally advanced, let's say, but I honestly don't think any of them even know they like guys until after canon. (Gakushuu's gay-homophobic to me lol)
I think that it would start with ren and koyama. (because. rensuhiko i mean c'mon) they might try to keep it a little subtle, but you know how ren is. Nothing stays secret for long. seo finds himself hating them for it and freaking out, because he's a poet! poets are all a little gay, right? how's he gonna make it if he's homophobic? but spoilers, turns out he doesn't mind his friends kissing guys if it's him they're kissing.
araki has never met any gay people before now, and he guesses these guys are okay if they're gonna be his first gay experience. He'll try anything once.
("wait, you don't have to do gay shit," ren says, flipping his hair out of his face.
"No, I'm gonna." The determined look on araki's face is almost- no, it IS cute, he can think that, he's gay and has two (three?) boyfriends now. life is crazy.
"Well," Seo drawls, "get over here, then.")
now gakushuu's the odd man out. and he handles it in a very good and healthy way!
JUST KIDDING he represses the shit out of it.
Unfortunately, Gakushuu's dad finds out he's gay and disowns him. HE didn't even know he was gay! What the fuck, dad? Luckily, Ren offers to put him up, and maybe get him to loosen up a little now that GakuHOE is out of the picture.
(one drunken night, mistakes are made. Or not made, depending on how you look at it. Ren is inclined towards the latter.)
after gakuren is established, things just fall into place. there's only so long you can watch your boyfriend kiss your best friends before you start wanting to get in on it yourself.
So that's how that happens. tysm for the ask, this was so fun!!

Typing Crushed Olive Branch Charas Using OPS
I already typed Crushed Olive Branch charas but I wanna do it in OPS since I think Objective Personality is a better system than just typing using functions :P
As before characters belong to @calronhunt
Starting with Theron, I don't think I'd change his type from ISFJ, he's definitely overdoing certainty. He hates what he doesn't know, this can be shown in his unwavering faith to what his parents have told him. This could be seen as pro tribe (which he is, he's definitely pro tribe) but in this case it's more because he needs a sense of normalcy and his parents gave him that by telling him what to do.
Later on in the story he ends up leaning more to the tribe side, but this makes sense since it's his second most used function. This also means he uses blast, so he's not a jumper.
As for the functions themselves, Si>Ni in my opinion. He doesn't really care about looking under what he sees, he's very much a surface level thinker, he doesn't really look behind why Dom says what Dom says, taking everything as he says and rarely forming his own opinions from judging others actions.
As for fe or te, I could go either way but he's definitely more of a feeler in general. He's efficient but doesn't care to tell others about his efficiency, which points to fe/ti use more than te/fi use!
Final verdict, ISFJ ! Blast>Sleep>Consume>Play
Other typology stuff: Stuck between 9w1 or 6w5, though I think I'll go with 9w1 since he's more of a gut triad person. He's in tune with reality, and numbs his emotions to avoid pain (as shown when he decides to become FWB with Matthias instead of, you know, processing his feelings. He definitely has a strong 6 fix though
9w1
For his tritype, as stated before, strong 6 fix and proooobably a 4 fix? He definitely wants to be come someone different but a lot of that hast to do with internal homophobia and I've never been a fan of stereotyping LGBT charas as 4 but I think it fits Theron more than 3 or 2...3 would be my second best guess cuz he used to be VERY three like as a kid but that was due to his parents influence. Also Gut>Heart>Head
9w1>4w3>6w2
RLOAN
FEVL
Melancholic [Dominant]
Lawful Good, Lawful Moral in 5x5
ISFJ Charas According to PDB: Fluttershy (MLP) The Narrator (Fight Club) Willow Park (The Owl House)
Closest Character to His Typing According to PDB: Blue Diamond (Steven Universe)
Dom I typed as an ESFP before, and I'm kind of conflicted in OPS. He DEFINITELY isn't overdoing chaos, he cares way too much about the tribe for that, but I also don't really see him as using blast or play? If I had to pick one, I'd say blast, he's not energetic enough to be play imo.
He's definitely tribe>self, which might seem weird considering how selfish he is, but his selfishness comes from external validation, not internal validation. He cares how others see him, and he forces those ideals onto others as well.
Next is functions, he's definitely more of an Fe user, his ti is so fucking weak I'm sorry bro...he doesn't care about efficiency at ALL he cares about others values first and foremost
As for Si or Ni, I'm nore sure? I see more Se than Si so I'mma go with Ni cuz of that but tbh he could use either
Final Verdict: ENFJ! Blast>Consume>Play>Sleep
Other Typologies: DEFINITELY heart triad, either 2w3 or 3w2 though I think I'll go with 2w3...he wants to be loved more than he wants to be looked up to. Though he is very proud of his abilities and is quite vain, his pride and love-need trump both of those aspects
2w3
For tritype, heart>gut>head, I'm thinking 8 and 7-fixed, though I could also see a 9-fix but he's a bit too confrontational for that. He isn't one to hide his feelings through numbing, he's someone who ignores his problems with his hedonistic tendencies (usually sex) which fits 7 more than 9
287
SCOEN
VFEL
Choleric-Sanguine
True Neutral, Neutral Impure in 5x5
ENFJ charas according to PDB: Monika (DDLC) Iroh (Avatar) Rarity (MLP)
Closest Character to his Typing According to PDB: Scrap Baby (FNAF)
Matthias is definitely overdoing independence, he DEFINITELY isn't overdoing chaos/certaintiy and he's not pro-tribe either. He's also very much just. Fi dominant. I cannot think of a better function for him LoL
If I had to say, INFP would make the most sense since I don't see much Se usage
This is so short I feel like I should explain but I cannot. He is so INFP the only other possibility I could see is ISFP but INFP just makes way more sense imo.
Final Verdict: INFP, Consume>Sleep>Blast>Play
Other Typologies: HONESTLY. Not very sure ? I think he's a 6, he keeps a warm facade as to keep his own security, even when others walk all over him, though this could also be seen as him merging with others emotions and putting them before his own...but also if I type him as a 9 the correlationists will kill me so I'll stick with 6. Also, he's more head than gut LMAO
6w7
Head>Gut>Heart, 9-fix for gut and then 4 for heart? Not exactly sure, could see 2 as well, DEFINITELY not 3 though. Honestly, I'mma go with 2-fix since he has such a high love need and shows little envy
692
RLUAI or SLUAI
ELFV
Pheglmatic [Dominant]
Neutral Good, Social Good in 5x5
INFP Charas According to PDB: Shinji (NGE) Belle (Beauty and the Beast) Spider-Man/Peter Parker (Marvel Comics)
Closest Character to his Typology According to PDB: Annaka Haruna (Nichijou)
Nerissa is also overdoing certaintiy, but imo she's sleep>blast, meaning she's a jumper. Her need for certaintiy and lack of chaos isn't shown as much but she's the one who keeps the patrols most structured, so this is mainly a guess extrapalated from that.
Si or Ni would make sense, but I think lower Ne makes sense since she doesn't really care about taking in multiple ideas, she prefers to look at the environment as is to come to conclusions (showing more sensing than intuition) but tbh I could see Ni as well. She's very analytical, and thinks in very structured ways which fits Ni in OPS well...definitely more like than keep brainstorming and throwing out different ideas but ! IDK !!!
Also Fi/Te, cares more about her own emotions and external efficiency, she wants things on the outside to go well, and also cares more about her own emotions than others, which makes her come off as cold.
Final Verdict: Either ISTJ or INTJ ? Not really sure but I'll go with INTJ...Sleep>Blast>Consume>Play
Other Typologies: Definitely head triad, prolly a 5 but could see 6 as well!
5w6
Head>Gut>Heart, gut triad is probably a 1 and heart triad is prolly a 3
513
SCOAN
LVEF
Melancholic [Dominant[
Lawful Neutral, Lawful Moral in 5x5
INTJ Charas According to PDB: Sasuke Uchiha (Naruto) Wednesday (The Addams Family) Batman (DC Comics)
Chara Closest to Her Typology According to PDB: Stanford Pines/Grunkle Ford (Gravity Falls)
Other Charas I'm mainly vibe typing LoL:
Eva: ISFP, 9w8, 974, SCUAN, FELV, Phlegmatic [Dominant], True Neutral or Neutral Moral
Cicero: ENFJ, Skipping enneagram cuz IDK, SCUAI, EVLF, Phlegmatgic-Sanguine, Neutral Good
Roman: ESTP, 8w7, 837, SCUEN, VFEL, Choleric [Dominant], Chaotic Neutral or Rebel Moral
Skipping Luna cuz I'm unsure
Trevor: ENFP, 7w8, 792?, SCUAI, VEFL, Sanguine [Dominant], Chaotic Good or Rebel Moral
Skipping Kiera cuz I'm conflicted on his type as well....he's either ISTP 9w8 or ESTP 8w9 but. Not sure LoL
If u want me to expound more on what these mean ask :3 I would've in the post but then it would've been sooo much longer LMAO

Processing: How Dan Sinykin Wrote Big Fiction
"The book explains how American fiction works by following the money."
by Lincoln Mitchel
Tumblr media
On a semi-regular basis, I interview authors about their writing processes—you can find previous entries here—and this week I’m excited to chat with Dan Sinykin whose book Big Fiction: How Conglomeration Changed the Publishing Industry and American Literature was published last week. As that subtitle implies, Big Fiction is a rigorous and fascinating look at the last few decades of corporate conglomeration in publishing and how it has shaped American literature in everything from what types of books are published to how we conceive of genres. (For a good sample of the book, check out Sinykin’s illuminating Slate article about how the modern genre of Fantasy fiction was shaped by the tastes and marketing ideas of one man: Lester del Rey.) I asked Sinykin about how the market shapes literature, the always precarious state of publishing, and organizing and writing Big Fiction.

Longitudinal Associations Between Parenting and Child Big Five Personality Traits (University of California Press, Nov 18 2021)
"We expected that positive parenting practices would be associated with the positive development of child extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotionality stability, and openness to experience, whereas negative parenting practices would be related to negative trait development.
Controlling for child age, gender, socioeconomic status, and parents Big Five personality traits, along with corrections for multiple testing, we found several interesting findings regarding the longitudinal associations between parenting and child personality.
First, parenting changed across time, which is consistent with results of previous studies (e.g., van den Akker et al., 2010).
The general trend was a decrease in parenting behaviors.
As children entered adolescence, parents became less involved in their children’s academic lives and provided less structure.
It is understandable that parents’ roles change during this period because adolescence is characterized by children’s striving for autonomy and independence.
The strongest decrease was in parental involvement in their child’s academics. (…)
Second, child personality also changed across time.
Children perceived themselves as less conscientious and less open to experience.
The decrease in child conscientiousness shows that adolescents were not developing in the direction of maturation, which is consistent with findings of previous research.
Another thing to note is that the rates of change and variability in change were modest, which is also consistent with past studies.
Third, surprisingly, there was a preponderance of statistically non-significant results when examining the associations among parenting practices and child personality.
After adjusting the alpha level using the conservative Bonferroni’s adjustment, only four correlations were statistically significant. (…)
Following their recommendations, it becomes clear that correlations between parenting and child personality are comparable to associations found between other environmental factors and child personality such as parental socioeconomic status and birth order, which are also small in magnitude.
On a related note, the fact that the cumulative evidence appears to point to a preponderance of small associations between different environmental factors and personality trait development should modify our thinking about how personality development comes about.
Instead of searching for a few large environmental factors that make or break our personalities, whether it is parenting, peers, or birth order, we should acknowledge that such factors with large effects probably do not exist.
Rather, evidence points to the fact that personality development is influenced by a large number of environmental factors, each of which makes a small contribution to children’s personality development.
This framework of personality development parallels the infinitesimal model in genetics, which is currently widely used in behavior genetics research.
Consensus is growing in genetics that phenotypes are influenced by a very large number of genes, that each has an infinitesimal contribution, rather than “candidate genes” that explain large amount of variance in the phenotype.
It appears that an analogous situation holds for personality development in childhood and adolescence.
Much like the threads of a tapestry, environmental factors combine in an intricate and complex way to drive personality development, and each factor is an essential, yet small thread that contributes to the tapestry that is personality."
