Take Care: Chapter Four TEASER

emphasis on TEASER. i just have no self control and need to give y'all at least something before i'm done with the next chapter. i'm close to it being done, but also want to get more written as a whole, so be prepared to wait another week or so for it! anyway, he's a tiny snippet because i love feeding you all delicious food and cannot stand keeping this all to myself. mwah. enjoy! <3

Now that you were up close, you saw more of what made Roy… well, Roy. There were clippings from newspapers, dating back as far as 2002, in a huge photo album on the bottom shelf of his dining room bookshelf. Awards and trophies adorned the other levels, alongside homemade cards, all addressed by someone called Phoebe.

Roy let you silently take it all in. You clutched your bag on your shoulder with white knuckles, overwhelmed by all that you were seeing. He cleared his throat from the kitchen, peering over at you. “Drink?”

“Oh,” you let out, startled. “Yes, please.” You turned back to the shelf, amazed. “Roy, this is— this is all—"

“It’s all crap,” Roy cut over you, opening the fridge. You turned around to see it full of green beer bottles. He hadn’t been wrong when he said fridge full of beers. He placed two on the kitchen counter and popped the tops off both.

“It’s not crap. They’re lovely memories,” you protested. “I mean, you displayed them here for a reason, didn’t you?”

Roy strolled over to where you stood and casually handed you a beer. You took it gratefully, taking a gulp, as the two of you scanned his full-to-bursting shelves together.

You pointed to the abundance of homemade cards. “Who’s Phoebe?”

“My niece,” Roy said.

“I didn’t know you had siblings,” you said.

Roy hummed. “Got a little sister.”

Somewhere within you, it all made sense. You were amongst the population that knew it was a green flag when a man had sisters, it was just plain true. Roy was no exception to that rule, and his behaviour slotted into place as a man who understood what it took to be an older brother to a sister.

“How old is Phoebe?”

Roy sent you a softened look. “She’s six.”

You hated to admit it, but your heart melted ever so slightly. You smiled at him genuinely. “How sweet.”

“She is sweet,” Roy said, with a distinct gentleness to his tone that you’d never heard before. “But, she’s also fucking insane. In the best way.”

“I bet she loves you,” you said, as the two of you took another gulp of beer together.

Roy let out a refreshing ahhh afterwards, to which he followed with “Yeah, she does. I don’t fucking get it.”

“I do,” you let out abruptly. When Roy caught your eye, you panicked. You sent him a hastily sweet smile, before you turned to the rest of the open-plan room.

The former Oscar winner actress, was present at the 2023 award ceremony. She allegedly attended alone and was there to present the award for best actor, since she won the female category last year. To no one’s surprise Austin Butler was the one to take the award home for his performance of Elvis Presley in the 2022 biopic. The two shared a tight hug on stage and were rather distant for the rest of the night, that is of course before they were caught by the paparazzi leaving together. Just look at the cute picture, I think this takes us one step further to understand where these two stand, after a year long of speculations

Austin Butler surprises everyone by posting on his instagram for the first time in months, his last post being a thank you towards the Academy for his award, that was back in March. Now it seems that he and his girlfriend had a joined birthday party. The two of them have an age gap of 10 years and 9 days, with his birthday being on august 17th 1992 and hers on august 26th 2002. This was the actor’s caption for his girlfriend Y/n: happy birthday to my sweet girl, my heart beats in your name.

Everyone gets lost in Cillian Murphy’s eyes. At the end of his latest film, “Oppenheimer,” in which he plays the titular character, Oppenheimer stands alone, staring at the pattern of rain droplets over a still pond. As the camera lingers on his face, a ring of fire begins to consume the Earth, and an immense blaze fills the whole scene. Not a sound is uttered, but the emotion conveyed in those piercing blue eyes speaks louder than words.

Murphy’s eyes that speak surely bring the character of Oppenheimer to life, even in the black and white parts of the film. “I try not to think of actors as I write, but Cillian’s eyes were the only eyes I know that can project that intensity,” Nolan said to the New York Times. This is their sixth collaboration, but the first time Murphy has played the lead. With “Oppenheimer” surpassing $900 million at the global box office — becoming one of the most acclaimed biopics to date — audiences have become as eager to learn about it’s as they are about the father of the atomic bomb.

Even though it took Hollywood a while to recognize Murphy’s potential to play a starring role, this quietly intense actor has long been celebrated in the UK and Ireland. A survey of his portfolio since his debut in 1996 reveals a daring selection of characters: Jackson Ripper, a terrorist leader in “Red Eye;” Fischer, the heir to a multi-billion empire in “Inception;” Daniel O’Donovan, an Irish republican in “The Wind That Shakes the Barley;” an anonymous, shivering soldier in “Dunkirk.” None of these names carry the same fame as the legendary physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer on screen today, but Murphy honored them all.

In order to get ready for the part of Patrick “Kitten” Barden, Murphy spent weeks working with a real-life drag queen, who took him clubbing with friends so he could study women’s body language and learn how to dress. To be able to convincingly act out Tommy Shelby, a WWI veteran, he followed a hard-hitting workout plan to look “physically imposing” for the part. The quest to achieve Oppenheimer’s chiseled cheeks and a haunted look took him to the opposite end of the spectrum. According to costar Emily Blunt, on set he would only eat one almond a day to slim down and was so immersed in the role that he skipped cast dinners. According to Murphy, “It’s not the scale, it’s the quality.” For him, great dedication is necessary in order to fully embody his characters.

Clearly, his hard work has paid off. Murphy is now the 5/4 favorite to win Best Actor at the 2024 Oscars for his performance in “Oppenheimer,” as predicted by The Online Betting Guide, and his last role as Tommy Shelby in “Peaky Blinders” earned him his first BAFTA TV Awards nomination for Leading Actor. Prior to this, he also received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his role as a transgender woman in “Breakfast on Pluto.”

Yet Murphy did not always know he wanted to be an actor, and it took him a long time to discover his life-long passion. His father was a civil servant and his mother a French teacher, but the house was always busy — non-stop music, bookshelves filled with literature, and the radio often on. His parents sent him to an all-boys private school, where he was involved in rugby for some time before giving it up. Then, he tried for a law degree at University College Cork, but he quit that too. He devoted years to doing what his parents wished for, not necessarily what he wanted, and “he didn’t feel good enough.” After that, he had a fleeting music career before a stage production of “A Clockwork Orange” guided him to his true passion — acting.

His first breakthrough came in the 2002 movie “28 Days Later,” where he played Jim, the lone survivor of a pandemic in a desolate London. It was a modern horror classic which served as a launching pad for Murphy’s career, with Nolan later recalling the poster of Murphy with his bald head and “crazy” eyes in a conversation for Entertainment Weekly. His profile continued to grow in 2005 following his roles in several successful films, namely the Scarecrow in “The Dark Knight” and the villain in the action thriller “Red Eye.” For the last two decades, he has built strong relationships with directors such as Boyle and Nolan and continuously wowed audiences with his talent for playing dark, troubled, and tormented characters. But these complex characters are not strictly villains. As Murphy said in an interview with The Guardian, “Villains are good if they’re well written, but if it’s one note or a trope, then they are dull.” He relishes playing these complex characters and likes scripts to stretch into “all the shades” of the human spectrum.

“I can’t remember which director said it, but he said it takes 30 years to make a good actor,” he said to PORT Magazine. 27 years later, coming off the heels of a starring role in a major film, Murphy appears to have achieved his aim.

In an industry that often rewards fast success, Cillian Murphy has chosen a different path. “Peaky Blinders” made the Irish actor a household name, and Nolan’s blockbuster epic took him even further. However, Murphy continued to pursue roles which were often underrated, because it is “a film that you're very sort of proud of and excited by.” Known for his introverted personality, Murphy has chosen a quiet, normal life away from the public eye, even revealing at one point that he did not enjoy the “personality part” of being an actor. “I don’t understand why it’s expected I’ll be scintillating on a talkshow,” he said in an interview with The Guardian. He is true to his word — Murphy’s bored face during interviews has become a popular meme. Indeed, 67 million people on TikTok have watched videos on “Cillian Murphy interview zoning out,” and they can’t seem to get enough of his dissociating clips. Part of his appeal to fans seems to stem from this authenticity, in contrast with so many other celebrities who aim to please.

To Murphy, character is in fact all that matters. Murphy is satisfied with being the man in the shadows, and though he may not be as flashy as Tommy Shelby with “that charisma and swagger,” he believes that this shows that “I’m doing my job” correctly. “Cillian and Tommy are almost polar opposites,” Steven Knight, the “Peaky Blinders” creator, attested in an interview with Esquire.

As recounted in the Esquire interview, when Murphy auditioned for the role, Knight doubted whether this very thin man was the right fit for a Bringham-based gangster. Murphy said a simple yet powerful thing then: “Remember, I’m an actor.” His point was that when he enters a room, he is not Tommy Shelby. But when he is acting, he can become anyone — a gangster, a woman, or a physicist.

What is so mesmerizing about Murphy’s eyes? It is not the color, but the complex, varied emotion that is seen in each glimpse. Murphy can draw people into a story and make them think twice about it afterwards. While he has worked for close to thirty years in the acting industry, making him one of the most prolific actors, neither the standard film crew hierarchy nor his fame will keep him from choosing what truly captivates him. His success is a natural result of his unwavering pursuit and love of the craft.'

Are we surprised at The Oscars?

And Oscar does it again, and as highly disappointed that many of us are, are we really surprised?

Yes I’m talking about the blatant robbery for Angela Basset yet again. 30 years ago when she got robbed by the Academy when nominated for “What’s Love Got To Do With It” when they gave the award to Helen Hunt for “As Good As It Gets.” We were mad and disappointed then because and we’re feeling the same now! WE as a culture see the depth of Basset’s talent but for some reason it’s not good enough or is it too much for the Oscar voters? When I started off saying “are we really surprised?” I mean that as much as we so very deeply wanted her to be rewarded for her exceptional and outstanding portrayal of a Queen in the film Wakanda Forever, once we started seeing rumblings of the “Everywhere” movie and cast, those of us who are realistic knew “and here goes the blockage for Angela.”

As one of my friends have said “ only one minority at a time.” And when it comes to OUR culture, only ONE of us at a time and if they happen to acknowledge more than one with the big awards, you best believe it will be decades before that EVER happens for us again. Who remembers when Halle Berry, Denzel and Sidney all won big awards from the Oscars on the same night in 2002! I said then

“well it’ll be a long time before we see this scene again!” Enjoy it now!

Am I saying that others don’t deserve their awards, no I’m not but really Jamie Lee Curtis for that role wins an award? If that isn’t politics I don’t know what is, first we have a nepobaby and then if she was to be left out with all the Asians winning well now that wouldn’t have sat right with the powers that be.

I’d rather have seen her for winning for that never ending role that she plays in Halloween.

But Angela’s body of work and brilliance of what she brings to the screen and for audiences every time she hits the screen is nothing short of magnificent. As Queen Ramonda, you felt every muscle of her movements from verbal to her walk as she portrayed a leader of a nation. Yes it was fictional but

she brought it to life to make you feel Queen Ramonda and her nation as they fought for survival as we see other nations do in real life. Wakanda Forever was just too much for this society to keep applauding, because Ryan Coogler should have been nominated as Best Director also! But you best believe if it had been Ron Howard creating something about space he would be on the list as he usually is. This YOUNG black man brings to the industry, edge of your seat excitement and most of all he brings what Hollywood lives for and that is DOLLARS! But yet that wasn’t good enough.

Yes many say, “we don’t need their accolades.” I get that but no matter where you work, when you do your job and do it well and even above the rest, it is human nature to want to have that prize! If you worked for a company and every single person got a bonus and you only get your name mentioned,you would be pissed off also! So I don’t care that she didn’t do the jive grinning when the winner was announced and it wasn’t her. For those who are calling Angela classless you WISH you could stand up to her even a 1/10th of who she is.

The three black women that all should have been nominated were just too damn strong for them to stomach. Now if they had been portraying druggies, abused, broke azzes, you can bet there would be more for them but how dare the STRENGTH that they portrayed be applauded.

So for Viola Davis(Woman King) Danielle Deadwyler(Till) and for the nominated queen herself Angela Basset, WE see you, WE applaud you, WE love you!

AMVs as Art Therapy

I've been in active therapy since 2012. I've had an array of therapists and a rollercoaster of progress while dealing with some issues I had since I was 11 years old. Coincidentally, I have been editing Anime Music Videos (AMVs) for nearly just as long, so hobbyist editing and the AMV community have shaped much of my life and progression to adulthood.

I had several hobbies, but AMVs was one of the only ones that remained consistent over the years. Even when I was physically unable to edit, I still thought about editing. I had notebooks full of AMV ideas, some I even storyboarded....

These are things that actually exist

The first AMV I ever made was in 2002, putting together 30 second video clips our digital still photo camera could take of my DVDs playing on the TV. Subbed anime was still being released on VHS back then. The SD card the camera took was only 5MB.

Unfortunately this didn't springboard a camrip career

Before I had the ability to make real videos, I was making slideshows with a program called RealSlideShow that produced .rm files which could only be played in a now-defunct player called RealPlayer. The first digital thing I created that remotely resembled a "music video" was done in early 2001.

I mostly used AMVs as a way to escape. Anime was "better than cartoons" and editing was a way to make something when I was unable to make something physically. My schools didn't have home ec or wood working class, so editing became the "make something with your hands" stand-in. It made me happy. It felt good.

So it's pretty surprising that it literally never came up in therapy, and I never considered it possible to use as therapy, until 2020.

I grew up in Georgia, where an anime convention called Anime Weekend Atlanta (AWA) takes place. 2001 was my first time attending, and they had an amazing AMV room with wonderful panels. AWA quickly soared in popularity as the convention to go to if you were an AMV editor, so I began attending as much as possible and socializing with the other editors that would regularly attend.

AWA introduced a "Professional" AMV contest, which was perceived as extremely exclusive. In tandem, there was a "Masters" contest, which, at the time, required you to have won an award from the pro contest* in order to participate. Teenage me didn't have many goals, but you bet that one of those goals was to be "good enough" to at least submit something to Masters. I never thought I'd win, but I wanted to be able to submit.

2019 was the first year I ever submitted to AWA PRO. By then, the contest had dramatically changed and was no longer exclusive. Masters too had changed its rules so anyone could enter. To this day (2022) I still have yet to enter anything into the Masters. My 2019 video to PRO (the contest was renamed to "Peer Review Online") was largely forgettable and only submitted at the behest of ZephyStar convincing me I was indeed "good enough."

I had some other issues going on at that time, and 2019 also marked a year I was getting back into editing after a long hiatus. So the mum response to my video and critical discussions about AMVs in the contest in general bore a hole in me and I resolved to do better.

I won PRO's "Best Technical" and was a finalist in "Artistic" with 2 videos in 2020.

And finally the huge history lesson and preamble has passed and the actual subject matter at hand - AMVs as Art Therapy - can be discussed.

Growing up editing AMVs, I was only concerned with making them. I didn't really care about "the art" of AMVs or what other people's opinions were, outside token acknowledgement of my existence and acceptance in the social group. 2019 was an awakening that made me think about the bigger picture. How did other people see and interact with AMVs? Learning people legitimately attached emotions to these things was absolutely surprising to me. Competitive rivalry and the need to be valued by my peer group had been my primary drivers before then. I liked telling stories in my AMVs, sure, but I was also doing it because I wanted to be better at doing it than the other guys (or at least seen).

Some of my best AMVs had been me going "Yeah I like that person's AMV. But it sucks, I can do it better." This is a largely negative mindset and I'm still working on shedding it.

In 2020, I read Subculture Diaries for the first time. In his 2019 honorable mentions, he states:

Anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion Song: “The Great Curve” by Talking Heads

The Great Curve is ugly. It’s a visually overloaded video; most of it consists of overlays upon overlays, to the point where it’s nearly impossible to tell what’s going on onscreen. It’s jumbled and messy, with sync that barely lines up with the music half the time. In every way, this feels like some sort of aborted attempt at depth where the editor didn’t know where to stop and just piled on everything that came into his head in the moment. But then you get to the first guitar solo, and the video completely destructs, as compression artifacts fill the screen in loose timing with the music. It’s a stunning use of an effect I’ve never once before seen applied intentionally, and it’s at that moment that it hits you that everything here, from the disheveled sync to the visual orgy of layered scenes, is on purpose, assaulting your senses in a way that leaves you unable to interpret any kind of message or meaning. I still don’t know if ProstrateConstantly is trying to say something with this, but I walk away from it feeling completely deluged with information and a desire to get to the bottom of it, even if it means watching this imploding mess a hundred more times.

This video and CrackTheSky's description of it somehow single-handedly dismantled my negative views around AMVs. AMVs could be art. AMVs could be emotional. AMVs could be something not designed to win a contest.

My 2020 PRO videos were heavily influenced by The Great Curve / D E S T R U C T. I used it and the things I learned about flow to create Esoterra, which took nearly 100 hours to edit. A number I had never gotten close to touching before.

While I was editing Esoterra, I befriended a person named Ash on Discord (Rena Cava on Youtube). We were beta testing each other's work for AWA PRO, and they were making a combination anime & live action video about sexual assault. It's not uploaded to youtube and I'm not sure if he'd like it to be uploaded anywhere else. It was an extremely triggering piece that erupted a ton of discussion about users experience with those issues. As someone said in a voice chat during PRO "The video just shows pain."

Ash put themselves into that video (literally, in the live action part) and was using it to show what they had been through. The idea behind the video, its beta, and Ash and my private discussions up to PRO 2020 influenced my decision to change my Dysphoria video from its original "creepy glitch vid" premise to one denoting some of my own feelings and experiences…

And it was cathartic. It was like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I was telling my story, I was doing it in my way, in my comfortable format, and it was as chaotic or as blunt as it needed to be. It was my first time really pouring myself into an AMV, so it's about half-half emotional discharge and competitive flashiness.

That being said, the REAL catharsis didn't start happening until after the video was done and I had time to decompress from it all. I didn't realize how much good the AMV was for me until I wrote the part where I over-explain everything in the video's description. I cried. Like, actual sobbing. I later went back and edited the description so it was less personal, and reading it still makes me a bit teary-eyed.

Obviously the events the AMV is focused on are things I've not fully come to terms with. A 32 year old man doesn't cry writing some words over nothing.

In September 2020, I created the AMV Sashimi Discord Server. Later that year, I made its annual contest called RICE - Rewards Imagined by Editors - to debut in February of 2021.

Keiichiface had befriended me during an AWA PRO contest and became the co-owner of Sashimi. Keiichi was going through some unfortunate events in her personal life, and she was editing to destress. Two videos she made were for her to explore her emotions during those times - Everything Sucks and Two Sides, same coin.

As stated previously, I've been in active therapy since 2012. But around 2019 I had reached a sort of plateau with my therapist and wasn't going anywhere. Keiichi became my go-to to talk about my feelings, because she also was attending therapy and we had some similar issues. Her therapist actually talks to her about AMVs, and so Keiichi is much more in tune with her emotions while making them - at least in my opinion.

Keiichi being so forthright about how she made these AMVs to explore her issues just hammered home that, hey, maybe I should do this too? I asked her if it helped her, and she said she thought so. I felt like Dysphoria helped me, so ever since 2020 I've become passively interested in AMVs as Art Therapy, and have mostly focused on self-indulgent AMVs which fell into two categories:

just doing it to do it (to try to stop being a perfectionist about everything) and

a drastic turn into the black depths of my depressed soul

Indeed, almost all of the videos I edited in 2021 have something to do with Depression (my main issue):

Even most of my comedy videos were about something related to Depression.

As an aside, Ash's 2021 AWA PRO video was an art piece called Transience, where he states in the description, "i wanted to see how simple i could make the video, while still effectively communicating a solid feeling."

Ash literally makes you feel sad while looking at some geometric shapes. I think Ash is on another level of AMVs as Art Therapy.

But, to turn this all around, the people and videos mentioned in this entry aren't the first, nor will they be the last, people to explore AMVs as art therapy. Countless others have done it, whether they recognize it or not. And if you, who are reading this, also have some issues you would like to work out, perhaps it's time to create a video about them?

But remember, what makes art therapy art therapy is not that you make the art. Art therapy is exploring your emotions in why you made the art. What story are you trying to tell? Why did you choose this video source? Why did you choose that song? What made you select this scene over that one? Is there a reason you used these effects versus those? Does the video diverge from your usual style? Why? And how does that make you feel?

I'll end with a funny meme from AMV Sashimi that Ash made about me. It pokes fun at how ignorant I am over my own emotions. Maybe one day I'll understand them. Maybe I'll understand them through an AMV other people like too.

* It was actually any contest, but I misunderstood the prerequisite rules.
