The Shadows You Leave Behind by rarae [mature. brothers being brothers. tw discussions of rape and consent] The Hargreeves have stopped the apocalypse and have just returned to the real world from training Vanya in Five's weird pocket dimension. Klaus decides he needs to get some of his things to bring back to the academy and drags Diego along for the ride. They run into one of Klaus’ old ‘friends’ and shit goes down.

Music recs meme thing

I was tagged (roughly a million years ago, shh I was writing and got sidetracked) by @reasoniwantyoutostay to do this rec thing. I decided, as I did something similar not too long ago, to go full-on national pride and only mention NZ songs this time. Which means I wasn’t actually able to narrow myself down to 10 because there were too many I wanted to use, and that I’m going to (once again) break the rules and explain something about each one. Buckle up, people, and enjoy the ride through my taste in NZ music.

1. Poi E - The Patea Maori Club (in Maori). I almost didn’t include this one because it’s also roughly a million years old and is really quite dated. But there’s one song guaranteed to drag almost every NZer into song, and it’s this one. Most people don’t know the words, but that doesn’t matter because we just sing along anyway.

2. Tangaroa - Tiki Taane (in Maori). I just love the video, the beat, the meaning, all of it. I use it in teaching a unit on culture and identity and I like the way it shows a tension between the two sides of a culture (the words are basically about the importance of whakapapa -- place in the world/ancestry), and how important it is to connect to all of who you are.

3. Aotearoa - Stan Walker (in Maori). He wrote this in 2014 for Maori Language week, and I love again the way it shows and celebrates the diversity of what makes up this country (the word Aotearoa is the Maori word for NZ and the connections between everyone are pretty clear in the video). The chorus ‘no te whenua o te atua tatau’ translates to ‘we all come from the land of the god’ (that’d be Aotearoa, heh, colloquially known as ‘Godzone’ or God’s own) and that pretty much sums up the idea behind the song -- that we all belong here, together.

4. Don’t Forget Your Roots - Six60. This is just a huge piece of nostalgia for me. The video is inspired by a connection they feel to a place where they started as a band, and I know the place. I walked these streets every day when I was at uni. Besides, I really like the message. Don’t stop looking back, don’t turn your back on where you come from. And the song is so mellow that it’s just nice to listen to.

5. Like Water - Ladi6. It’s just really mellow and I love her voice. I could listen to her forever, and I often do. I can’t play this just once, I always put it on repeat.

6. Brother - Smashproof feat. Gin Wigmore. This is a really political song. It was written in the wake of a (Maori) kid getting stabbed to death by a (white) home owner who chased him down for tagging, and who got off on grounds of self defence. 7. George - Headless Chickens. Another quite political song. It’s fairly clearly about sexual coercion if not abuse, and the slightly discordant music and her voice just really emphasise the bleak message. i don’t know why I love it so much, but I do. It’s another I can always listen to.

8. Can’t Get Enough - Supergroove. Look, I adore Supergroove and I could have made this list just from their songs, but I made myself choose (which was super hard - you should also check out Scorpio Girls and You Gotta Know and Sitting Inside My Head, because I wanted to pick all of those too). This is just silly and fun, and I love it, so this one it is to get us past the sadness of the previous two.

9. Just a Little Bit - Kids of 88. This group and this album got me through the time after the earthquakes of 2011. It was my happy place, so any list of my fave NZ music would be incomplete without them. Even now, listening to this stuff makes me feel more peaceful.

10. Why Does Love Do This To Me - The Exponents. This song is always everywhere and we all pretty much know all the lyrics to it, but it wouldn’t be on this list of there hadn’t been one of those biopics on The Exponents on TV last weekend. So blame that, I guess. But it’s one of those anthems tbh and the list would probably be naked without it, so whatever.

11. Madness & Other Allergies - Opshop. Again, I love Opshop, so this was a hard choice but I just love the beat of this one. A lot of their more iconic stuff is a lot slower and more ballady, but this one is something different and it always attracted me. Also, the girls in the video were contestants on NZ’s Next Top Model, and I remember being charmed by that too.

12. Violent - Stellar*. I honestly have no idea why this song attracts me so much, but it still does. It’s another of those I can’t stop listening to if I get started (why yes it did take a long time to put this together). ‘your nihilistic tendencies are making me violent’ - I mean, how can you not love it?

13. Black Sheep - Gin Wigmore. yes, I know I kind of sneaked two of hers on here. That’s because I love her and the other one is a ‘featuring’ so it doesn’t count, right? I adore this song; she’s so chirpily happy that she’s a black sheep and proud of it. i aspire to her level of not giving a fuck.

If you could be anywhere right now, where would it be?: This is strange question because I’m in my very nice bed and I don’t really want to be anywhere else at the moment but like in general Boyfriend and I are planning on moving to England so I’d like to be there? Kind of? Or like... sitting on a beach somewhere? Sitting next to my sister? I’m not really longing to be somewhere else so much as wanting some things to be a little different? But on the whole I’m extremely satisfied with where I’m at right now.

When would you time travel to?: lol fuck any time period before this one (modern medicine and some more rights are v nice) so I’ll say 3017 but that’s assuming tr*mp doesn’t get our entire goddamned planet fucking destroyed and also that people aren’t asshats to each other based on social constructions and institutions like gender and religion and identity and also ethnic backgrounds :’)

First Fandom I joined: Oh boy this is a good question. I was just talking to Boyfriend the other day about how Han/Leia was my first OTP before I really knew what that meant? Like watching the movies as a kid I felt in my heart like “yes they’re so good together please be happy together forever” I wasn’t on the Internet at all until 2008, and not on tumblr until 2011, and not on stan twitter until earlier this year lmao. When I started the tumblr, it was mostly disney and then avengers when it came out? This blog is my first like dedicated I’M IN A FANDOM venture.

Favorite book: I hate this question because I know someone out there will hate me for it *squints* but the honest truth is “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton it’s been my favorite since seventh fucking grade so fight me about it!!!1!

Worst thing you’ve ever eaten/tasted: Oh no this is horrible because I’m a fucking picky ass eater lmao uhhh I hate rice?? bad texture.

What class do you wish you paid more attention to in school? This is not the answer you’re looking for but I had some severe problems in my life when I was in high school so really I wish I had been able to pay more attention to everything in school. I would literally time travel back and redo it all if I could. I would have taken my government classes more seriously, gotten more into my history classes, and would have signed up for AP Art History because I fucking wanted to but I didn’t. If those problems hadn’t been there or hadn’t affected me so badly I would have gotten better grades and could have chosen something different for college. In college, I might have looked for something more like anthropology and focused more on language in a cultural and socio-historical context and not just language and teaching language. Similarly without those problems I would have been able to pay better attention in college and have gotten better grades, done more academic research, etc.

Just hypothetically, if you could get rid of one entire species and not have it screw up the ecosystem at all, what would it be? Humans :’) we’re the worst.

First foray into fanfic? How To Train Your Dragon on that fanfiction net website. I remember seeing the second film and feeling so, like, when are those two going to kiss and get married and live happily ever after? I needed that closure. Then I discovered AUs and ~lemons~ and then I was reading Frozen fic for a while(??) and finally Supernatural. Apple Pie Life by @heyacas was the first fic I read on ao3 after it was recced to me and I never looked back.

Why do I want to watch someone fall off of something or worse get pushed/tricked/otherwise manipulated into doing something I can see (or worse, hear) is painful for them? I can’t stand it.

Fics I’m Writing(ish)

Betrayal which is basically a before and after fic of Judas’ betrayal (but is it really his betrayal? lol) and it’s an AU in that Judas survives lol. I wrote the second part aaages ago, which is really annoying, because I need to finish the first part before I can post it. BUT I did do a bit of work on it the other day, so hopefully it should be up soon!!

JCS Much Ado Social Media AU: I don’t really have a catchy title for this one yet, so it’s pretty much what it says on the tin. Simon, Pete and Mary get bored with Jesus and Judas’ constant sniping and decide to trick them into falling in love with each other, with the help of everyone’s favourite Cool Stepdad Joseph. I’ve kind of stalled on this one atm (mostly because idk whether to put in a Claudio/Hero-esque subplot - it needs drama but i’m not sure this will work tbh). But I love it so hopefully I’ll get round to finishing it and posting at some point.

Character study on Kiki, Rosa and Bel: Basically going through series 2 with Kiki and Rosa as girlfriends, but at least partially from Bel’s POV. Again one I’ve not written any of in ages, but I reeeealllyy want to, because Kiki and Rosa are super adorable and I think this could work really well. We shall see.

Flaws: Another character study of Tom and Miles’ friendship. This is one that I can basically finish whenever. Unfortunately my sudden overwhelming obsession with Black Sails has cooled my Momas feels down a bit.

This one which doesn’t really have a title but is the only one I’ve actually posted anywhere. I still haven’t decided if I’m gonna write a second part although I know @thecurlymop wants me to. We’ll see if my mitmas feels return (they definitely will eventually. I’m p sure TCF and momas/mitmas specifically is the fandom I’m most prolific for, or at least joint with The Hour)

Fics I’m planning (ish)

So I really want to write some Black Sails fic when I’ve finally finished. At the moment my idea is to write a ficlet where Flint flashes back to the last night he spent with Thomas (not knowing it would be the last night). I’m sure this has been done already (I’m quite excited about reading BS fic because the fandom seems pretty big and prolific atm, if anyone has any recs let me know!) but I just think it would be a good one to do.

Playlists

I’m currently in the process of gathering songs for a Flinthamilton playlist. I won’t post it till I’ve finished watching but I’ve got quite a lot already. I love making playlists, what can I say?

Original Fiction

So at the moment this is only an idea, but I’m planning on writing a script for a TV series about queer life in Weimar Berlin (in a sort of similar vein to BS in that there’ll be both real historical figures and original/fictional characters and the whole finding somewhere to belong thing. And obviously, lots of queer characters. Which is kind of a given). Basically just a project for my own personal enjoyment, about something I’m really interested in (and relatively knowledgeable about), and who knows, in the future maybe I’ll have the chance to make it real. It’s more likely to happen if I actually have something tangible anyway.

This was really great, it’s good to have all the stuff I’m working on in one place!
