what the fuck is a system
Don't worry, anon, this isn't a dumb question at all! Systems aren't very well-known, so I'm happy to explain them to you. I'll start by explaining what a system is, then go more in-depth about systems in general.
So, you know how most people are one person? Or, rather, you know how when you meet someone, you assume they're the only person in their body? You don't really think "I wonder if this person shares their body and life with other beings." or "I wonder if this person I know is actually multiple people all sharing the same body.", but that's how it is for systems!
In simple terms, a system is any collective group of self-aware entities that share the same body (which is, I fully acknowledge, a complicated definition, but basically we have multiple selves whereas most people would have just one, and each self has their own identity). We may not specifically consider ourselves individual people (some systems see themselves as separated parts of one whole person, for instance), but it'll probably help you understand if you think of us as people that happen to share the same body. We each have our own sense of self, ideas, feelings, personalities, and on and on, just like anyone else.
Although this probably sounds very strange and surprising, it's likely that you've heard of systems before – just not with that language. Many people have heard of "multiple personalities" or "Multiple Personality Disorder", which is how systems used to be known. This sort of understanding of systems is especially common in horror movies, which tend to depict systems as serial killers or monsters. Of course, systems are no more likely to hurt others than anyone else is, but the stereotype and stigma persists, and can lead to harassment or even violence against systems.
However, you may have also come across more positive depictions. Body sharing is a common trope, for instance. People with Dissociative Identity Disorder, who often describe themselves as systems, are being more often portrayed as regular or kind people rather than serial killers, such as Uendo Toneido from Ace Attorney. I've often seen systems point to characters and series like Venom, Sense8, and Moon Knight – which depict systems or situations and characters that resonate with systems – to describe what their lives are like. We often find characters that are rather like systems that may not have been intended to be read as such and have a laugh about it; you might be able to spot the same, now that you know what you're looking for.
So, systems can be understood as when a single body is inhabited by more than one person, or being, or entity (whichever term you prefer). We may share the same body, but we each have our own selves, and often, our own names and identities, too.
That's the essence of it! I'll put more under the cut about systems in case you're curious.
For starters, if you're looking into systems, you'll probably run across the term "plurality", which is an overarching term that refers to all instances of someone sharing a body/brain; it is the state of being more-than-one, not just an individual collection of beings in a single body (the latter is what the word "system" specifically refers to). There's also the word "plural", which can be used either as a noun to mean the same thing as "system", or as an adjective to describe things that involve or exhibit plurality. For instance, I am plural. I very much enjoy talking about plurality and plural characters in fiction.
(As a comparison, you may think of video chats/group calls. Plurality, here, would be video chats in general. Meanwhile, a specific video chat – called a webinar – would be a system. And the people in a webinar would be the members of a system. Or, for another example, plurality would be education, a system would be a class, and the members of that system would be the students.)
Speaking of, beings who share a body – who are part of a system – are called many different terms. Two of the most common are "headmate" and "alter", although I also see "system member" a lot. I could say that my headmate was rather helpful today, or that my alter was fronting yesterday. Alter is more medical of a term, but it's more standard, especially in some other languages outside English.
But, wait, you might be wondering what fronting is! Well, since we all live in the same body, we've got to share control of it too, don't we? Fronting is what we call controlling the body, and switching is when we change who is in control. Some systems switch often, while others switch rarely, or only under certain circumstances, and some systems never switch at all. Switching may be involuntary, or it may be a voluntary skill a system has picked up. There's a lot of variety across systems.
Plurality is most often known in the context of DID, or Dissociative Identity Disorder, which often involves a lot of involuntary switches. P-DID, or Partial Dissociative Identity Disorder, meanwhile, involves very few switches, but these are likely to be involuntary, as well. There are other disorders that plurality may be a part or symptom of, but plurality can also exist as its own non-disordered state, so long as there's no attached or related issues causing problems for the system (ex. memory issues are another frequent problem in DID, and these memory issues come from the members of a system not remembering what the others did when those alters were fronting).
You may be wondering, how does this happen? How does someone become a system? There are many different ways. Sometimes, it's a part of someone's culture, religion, or spirituality. Sometimes, it's the brain's response to trauma, trying to protect itself. Sometimes, someone is simply born this way. Sometimes, someone may become a system out of the blue, or cause their own plurality somehow. Some systems have a multitude or mix of origins. Most studies on systems currently focus on systems that originate from trauma, as these systems most often have issues – including the trauma in question – that need to be looked into and addressed, but there are some budding studies into systems with other origins, such as the few current and ongoing studies on created systems (the aforementioned systems that cause their own plurality).
I'm simplifying some things here; identity such as this gets increasingly nuanced and personal as you learn more and more (for example, as said before, not all system members identify as individual persons, even if it can help understand them to think of them like individual persons that just happen to share a body). But I hope this helped you learn at least the basics about systems!

oh 100% full agree in regards to the silver and blaze thing. didnt the 06 manual even describe blaze and silver to be sibling-like? that was my first connection when sonic described them to be like him and tails
i dont think it was the manual i think it was a set of online character profiles that were specifically made for sonic 06? but yeah theyve definitely been said to have a sibling relationship at least once

The idea that a god-like character with (supposedly) unlimited powers should snap their fingers at the end of a TV series and remove all pain and terrible things in the world so humans no longer had any suffering is the most BAFFLING thing I have ever heard. WHY DID THE SHOW EVER EXIST IF FIXING THINGS WAS THAT EASY??????

Because Eve gave us free will and choice and the opportunity to self-determine who we are#And that's good! That is a hopeful ending! Because it's speaking to the audience as individuals and saying you have a choice#You always have a choice to do better. No mistake you make is too irredeemable so don't let yourself drown guilt#because guilt fixes nothing. im going to bed in a minute bc i'm sleepy tired but i am trying 2 figure out books i want to read for the next little bit. i'm reading kingdom of sweets right now and taking a break from the ojibwa dance drum bc kingdom of sweets is a very seasonal book and i want to get it read before christmas, and then i'll try and get back to the ojibwa dance drum after that. i want to do ink blood sister scribe i think as one of my first books in january and then at some point in february/march i want to read belleweather but other than that... we'll see what botm does for its boty selections and go from there in terms of doing polls for what to read next

I have to get my wisdom teeth removed here on the 4th and I really wish medical anxiety wasn’t so dismissed or laughed at.
The anxiety has been slowly ramping up since Christmas and now that I have to cut out the only thing that’s managed the fibromyalgia bs. I mean sure it’s just weed. But when my health tanked and I was throwing up half of everything I tried to eat and losing weight like it was nothing. Unfortunately it was the only thing that helped stop the vomiting.
I’ve been put on and taking off several medications over the years for being the unlucky type that doesn’t react well to different meds. All the gut pills they wanted me to take hurt or was you know making me digest my own blood.
The Fibromyalgia began creeping in when I was in high school and the doctors I had told me to eat pills and go away. I had injured my knee and it just didn’t get better. I still have issues with it. Being a childhood cancer survivor means health complaints must be cry’s for attention or drugs.
They asked me to not consume any weed because they don’t know if it’ll hurt me to be put under so they can cut out the heavily impacted teeth. Which fine, I won’t fight because they could label me as some sort of user or drug obsessed or whatever. But the only drug that I know can kill you while being put under is meth.
My sister’s dental surgeon said don’t stop smoking weed because there isn’t anything out that supports either side. Pro weed or anti-weed before surgery. He didn’t want anything to add to the stress of the surgery so he said keep doing what you’re doing.

Ah, prologues... such a controversial topic ahahahahaha
To be honest, I have never read a prologue that bothered me. Nine times out of ten a prologue just leaves me curious. Generally they detail events that won't link back to the main story until much later and, dammit, I love me a good slow-burn mystery that all comes together in the end.
Every now and then I'll read a prologue that detracted from the mystery rather than added or that was only put in because it was an action scene and the next four chapters are going to be really slow, but idk, maybe I just have low standards, because I just read it anyways without forming an opinion. Text has to be outright confusing or uneventful for like more than three chapters before I get annoyed with it.
In my own writing though? If it serves the story, yeah I'll use a prologue. Sometimes setting up the mystery early means dramatic irony or increased tension. Sometimes prologues are a good way to tease the cool magical world that will appear later in the story, provide perspective, or show rather than tell backstory that helps the reader become more invested in a character.
And sometimes, they reveal too much too soon or do not add to the story in a way that will have satisfying pay-off.
I guess, what I am trying to say is, it depend

If you know#you know#if you don't#I won't give the book any more press.#But the prologue was iconic.#Most casual fans of the series new the first sentence by heart.#I think of that example every time someone argues that prologue will always turn readers off a story.

#Three Houses#Three Hopes#Three Hopes Spoilers#Dimitri#Edelgard#even without it being an AU who knows if two/three years could've made a difference#against five/six years#while I'd say probably not it's at least clear Edelgard wasn't as gung ho in Hopes to go it alone#bc even in Houses I don't think she'd really want anyone's help in Zaharas#in Houses she was MUCH more fervent toward the idea that Dimitri was her enemy#her treatment toward him in Houses was awful by comparison to Hopes#it wasn't great in Hopes either but she at least had enough clarity in her mind and was free of TWS in Zaharas#it's ironic how she says the world outside won't be any kinder to her than the one in Zaharas#bc if nothing else the world to her outside wasn't unkind or kind by the end of AG#even though Dimitri walks away from her at the very end he could've taken that chance to just kill her#she was confused and powerless and instead of just ending it despite her having started the war he just walks away#tbh you could argue that AG was actually a GOOD ending for her bc in Hopes verse for all we know#like I said in a theory before a couple times the Edelgard we knew might have been a fabricated creation by Thales#because not only did she lose her memories of Dimitri but when Thales died and his magic wore off of her#she got them back but also either regressed to her childhood self or she at least got all her childhood memories back#so in a sense in AG's ending she gets to start over and be who she was going to be without having met Thales#you could say it's bitter that she lost a good chunk of years off her life if that was really a fabricated personality#but that it's bittersweet bc at least she didn't die and had the chance to resume her life from the point of losing her memories#it'd still be bittersweet too tho if she got her memories back and her personality wasn't fabricated#because she'd get her memories back only to realize she had waged war against her brother and only living sibling#it could end up with her feeling guilt for the things she did in that time bc she did them without the knowledge that she hurt family#and if you played SB then she also murdered two of his best friends and his adoptive father and now has to live with that guilt#tbh AG is the closest thing to a golden ending between both games bc everyone survives AND there's the possibility that#Edelgard was able to start over with her actual memories this time with as many people possibly surviving#in a timeline where she got her memories back AND took his hand was one where everyone could survive and move on from TWS

I need to not engage in a direct argument about this with someone who definitely does not need to hear it from me right now so I'm just going to yell about it on tumblr:
If you believe people should only have autonomy when they aren't hurting themselves then you don't really believe people should have autonomy. "When they're hurting others" is a justifiable boundary because your autonomy shouldn't allow you to infringe other people's autonomy, but drawing the line at hurting themselves is essentially saying you should get a greater say over their well-being than they should, which is the complete opposite of autonomy.
I acknowledge the nuance that sometimes people would have a deeper general preference to have their autonomy overridden in specific instances and respecting them may mean helping them with that but you still don't just get to assume that's the case because you want it to be true.

You know, capitalism is another one of those words that sadly is like problematic in that it's functionally useless because people just toss it out and then everyone gets so hung up debating the meaning of the word capitalism that the whole point is lost
That's why I don't ever really use it. It doesn't really matter if it's capitalism or if it's cronyism or... whatever, I think it's bad when companies make record profits while prices go up up up
I think there's probably an issue and it probably needs to be solved (and I'm afraid you can't convince me less regulation is a magic bullet)
I like currency and exchanging currency because it seems like a good way of moving goods and labor around, but I also strongly support welfare and think that any group of more than 50 people is probably starting to get corrupt
Don't trust the government, but sure as hell don't trust corps...
I don't know, my original point is that sadly capitalism gets tossed around too much to mean anything anymore... but I just see too many argumentative people online so I'm tossing out my stances to avoid getting side tracked debating what I mean
What I really really mean is just fucking say what you're saying and don't bother saying capitalism cause you'll just make people argue and miss your point
#this is about me reblogging a post the mentions the word capitalism#and I sometimes do that and have people get in and argue about if something is or isn't capitalism#and it's like yeah mate and honestly I hear you; I'm not sure that it fully 100% fits here and if it does it's so broad it's meaningless#but like... read the bit before they said capitalism and have a think on that instead#like let's focus on the description of the situation and how we feel about that description more than a single definition#I honestly don't really care what things are called half as much as the actions being taken and how effective they're likely to be#don't really care if something's called hatemurderdeathism if it's making things better with no policies I hate#obviously there's some things where I'd be like 'hmm... let's not call it that; cause that implies some specific bad stuff'#but like broad strokes shit... capitalism socialism libertarian... what the fuck ever...#is there a strong social net while people are free to trade goods and services?#then I probably am mostly for this plan#fight about the name but leave me out of it#...that's another big part of why I don't call myself anything#takes too long trying to explain your definitions and get people to agree that it doesn't actually mean fascist murder#(cause whatever label you run under I bet I've seen someone call it a fascist murder)#nah; I'm not any this or that group... given up on that a long time ago#I'm just a stupid idiot with various ideas I'd like to talk with people to see how we can move the needle more in that direction#like the less people starving and being homeless direction#and the more worthwhile and productive work and less busy pointless work for megacorps direction#which I think means a shift to more small businesses... which is actually part of why I'm for a UBI#pretty sure I know at least one person on here with a business idea (and knowing them it's a good one)#but they just lack the financial stability to start the business#so I actually want a UBI cause I think it would be good for the economy#never gonna say I can't be stupid or wrong; but that is one of my motives#...whatever... none of this matters; really ought to hurry up and die but I procrastinate that as hard as everything else
