I think.... over the last two days I think I've read just about every Murderbot fic on AO3 that meets all my (current) filter criteria... I'm pretty sure the only one I have left now is a 200k epic....

So @hejeksbs saw that post about fandom olds freaking out about IWTV stuff being posted on the AO3, and said they’re new to fandom and fandom culture and don’t understand. So congrats, Hejek, you’re one of today’s lucky 10,000. This is going to be a basic primer, but I encourage others to chime in with details. (Also, thanks for reminding me I need an Interview exhibit in the museum. I had that written down somewhere.)
So if you go back to the 1990s and early 2000s—the pre-AO3 digital years—you’re going to see an official disclaimer on just about every fic. These basically said “I don’t own anything here, please don’t sue me.” Some were quoted elaborate.
These started because of Anne Rice.
See, Anne Rice was, how can I say this nicely…an asshole? The day she died there were literally people posting crab rave and “Ding Dong, The Witch Is Dead” from The Wizard of Oz on Tumblr. Because before Harry Potter fanfiction was pretty frowned upon and you might get a C&D if you didn’t keep your head down properly, but Anne Rice.
ANNE RICE.
Anne Rice literally recruited her “loyal fans” to harass people who made fanworks. At least one person was doxxed to her workplace by rabid Ricers, and at the time fanfiction was taboo enough you could absolutely get fired for that. I was eleven and friends with someone who was 13 who��d just read Interview and drew this wonky I-am-a-kid-who-can’t-really-draw-yet-but-I-loved-this-SO-MUCH piece of fanart of Louis and Lestat, and she literally dipped off the internet because she got an extremely nasty “I’m suing you” threat from Rice. (Are you out there, Mercury000? It’s me, sailorsharon0722.)
Anne Rice did everything in her power to ensure there was no IWTV fandom at all. I’ve heard from people older than me that she used to host a “vampire’s ball” every year in New Orleans for her “loyal fans” but if you showed up and she felt your costume outshone her own, she’d make you leave. People didn’t dare so much as put “Lestat” and “fanfiction” in the same sentence.
And then, irony of ironies, when her reputation got so bad she was struggling to sell books, she…became a Christian and started writing Bible fanfiction to sell.
Yeah.
Over the years there were claims she’d changed her mind about fanfiction, but nobody ever had evidence to back this up. I even saw a dude on Quora claiming to be a close friend of hers saying we were all lying, and he got absolutely ratioed by fans going “I still have my C&D letter, you wanna fucking try again?”
Incidentally, I would like to point out that her attitude wasn’t uniform. It’s easy to say “that’s just how it was,” but Neil Gaiman has been around since the 1980s and has always appreciated fanfiction. Stephen King’s approach is “please tell me, to my face, that me explicitly writing about Cthulhu isn’t fanfiction” and otherwise pretty lassez-faire (he has no interest in knowing you’re writing fanfiction of his stuff, he just genuinely doesn’t care), and his first book was published in the early 1970s. Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek, actually accepted submissions of fanfiction scripts DURING THE SHOW’S ORIGINAL RUN, at least according to popular lore. (@dduane, can you check me on this?) Mercedes Lackey—who’s 1980s-and-1990s fantasy royalty—has been asked on Quora about why she “changed her mind about fanfiction” and her response was “I never changed my mind, I just had to talk my publisher into accepting it. I’ve always been okay with it but I had to say no because of my contract.” Sure, Diana Galbaldon was out there comparing fanfiction to rape(????), but even among those who disapproved of fanfiction, Rice’s attitude and actions were extreme. And they persisted into the 2000s, too, with her egging on fans who harassed and sent death threats to a YouTube reviewer who didn’t like one of her books.
AO3 changed ALL of that.
AO3 said “here is our well-researched legal claim that fanfiction is legal, and if someone gives you shit about works you have posted on our website, our lawyers will represent you. You can post safely here. It’s okay. We got your back.”
Even so, the fear about Anne Rice continued. And can you blame people? This woman’s name held the same power in fannish conversations as “Voldemort.” (A moniker by which I’ve actually heard her called.) She all but destroyed the old guard, on purpose.
….and then a new generation of fans happened. A new generation that didn’t remember life before AO3, had never known anyone who literally had to move house to get away from Rice’s minions’ threats and harassment. I know we use “nature is healing” as a joke on this website, but really truly, that’s what happened here. She left charred tree trunks and bushes that were old-school fans and from their ashes tiny little 2010s-fans seedlings began to grow.
The thousand-odd fics you saw in those screenshots (which I feel I should clarify are from before the new show came out—a show that must have her turning in her grave, because she was absolutely adamant that all her vampires were STRAIGHT and if you thought otherwise you were DISGUSTING, and I hope she spins so hard her corpse combusts) are absolutely shocking to us older fans because it’s like staggering out of a nuclear wasteland and spotting a little garden with signs saying “free nuclear-illness medical services” and realizing it’s real. What the fuck, what the fuck, but also, holy shit y’all we’re so proud of you. YES. Keep going. Don’t let the witch get you down.

I love seeing people of all ages participate in fandom, especially those who are 30+. It just makes me so happy and I seriously don't understand the vitrol people have of using age as an insult in fandom. Wasn't a popular Star Wars fanfic written by someone in their 60s? Regardless, fandom history is so rich and it's so lame to think that peoppe can't ship characters, write fics, draw fanart etc because you wanna play the non existent role of fandom police
I hate to tell tweens but when you grow up, whether you have a successful career, get an advanced degree, become a professor at the (literal) best university in the world, get married, raise many kids, are a published author, teach high school, or teach Sunday school (these descriptions are all describing people I am personally friends with in fandom)... your interests remain. You're still you. You still get excited about the same things.
There is no magic moment where you suddenly become some mature person. For that matter, when you do slowly mature, you realize none of that comes with scoffing at all things imaginative and being satisfied with goose liver and wine, unless that's like your fandom. Maturity doesn't mean a lack of enjoyment. Maturity means embracing what you enjoy, but balancing your life.
That can be scary for kids, but in all honesty, no matter how old you are, you never really feel grown up, like you've "arrived." You're all you've got. This person you are? Is who you will become. There's no magical switch. So embrace who you are and what you like, as long as you don't like, like, bullying other people.
And in the meantime realize your professor might just be writing fanfic in their office next time you stop by for office hours. :P

i haven't even read this fic recently it's been like weeks. a month? more? and i'm still internally screaming. i feel like i'm missing some of the main draws and i can't even describe a lot of it because i would DIE if i spoiled this masterpiece. this fic made me actually want to make myself learn to draw people so i can draw nothing but fanart for this fucking fic.
the characters, the pacing, the fucking lore, it's all immaculate. seriously. it feels like it's what dbh SHOULD'VE been. the writing style is utterly enrapturing. when i read it for the first time, i legitimately could not get myself to turn away from it for anything except tasks absolutely required on me. every single character feels like a PERSON. connor's complexity is fucking insane. he's lovable, he's terrifying, he's caring, he's callous. he is NOT static, at all. connor in chapter x is a completely different beast from chapter y. there is so much trauma and catastrophe, but PERFECTLY balanced with the humor. it's fucking perfect

i wanted to draw some of the kids with their respective hero school uniform and also kayano playing with her quirk to match nagisas hair and some other things i like about the fic like irina mentoring todoroki (and her teachings failing to land), shinsou and rio being besties and izuku being a bisexual disaster :)

13. What's a character or ship you haven't written/drawn yet but would like to some day?
hmm... well with my present interests in mind, i suppose there's a few. i've technically drawn kabumisu but have not successfully written it yet, so that's one thing. i do have a fic though it's just barely started. and the unfinished chilbell fic... there are several individual characters i haven't drawn yet that i'd like to. mickbell, izutsumi, chilchuck's kids, falin, sissel...
realistically speaking though i guess one of these days i'll get over my weird irrational fears of being a Chilaios Traitor and write/draw labru. idk why chilbell didn't make me feel that way but labru does. labru is so very much my speed like... even if it's not my otp it calls to me... i have to engage with it eventually.
also i wanna draw more kabru in general. he's so babygirl.
14. Is there a character or ship you were so sure you would never write/draw but now you've changed your mind?
that one i'm not so sure about. there haven't been any characters or ships i looked at and was certain i'd never want to make art of, because i generally know myself better than to assume my opinions can't change. on a related note, though, i really don't think i expected to fall so in love with kabru, even if i never dismissed him outright. or mithrun, i guess, but also mithrun is so immediately captivating and comes in just late enough that by the time you get to him, you know what you're in for in terms of main characters and probably won't underestimate his presence in the story.
but the first time i saw kabru was in the anime, bc i hadn't started reading the manga yet. i had no context for who he was outside of having seen some fanart that implied he hated laios. i figured he'd probably be some sort of dashing rival, which was interesting for sure, but that was all it was at the time--"interesting". and then i read the manga.
i have to wonder if that's what you're supposed to think. ryoko kui is insanely good at subverting tropes, but to do so you often have to set the trope up first. kabru seems like he'll be a dashing rival who wants to be better than laios, but then you start getting into his personality and oh, he's a little fucked up. then you start getting into his motives and oh, he's... complicated? and then he reveals his backstory and oh! he's traumatized! and then the story keeps going and you realize he is a deeply flawed but deeply caring person who is trying to do what he believes is best no matter what. and he's as well-rounded as everyone else ryoko kui writes. and he's aware of his own limitations as well as his strengths and will use both however he can to do what's right. and at that point how could i not love him

I don't have it on hand, I'm sorry! but I THINK what I told people was Lewis is outwardly pro omega, we'd already discussed Daniel would be pro omega (I think???), Lando was in the publicly staying out of category (but has now been revealed to have nefarious intentions), and George would be completely anti-omega just for funsies.
look I'll ignore what is obviously a very underdeveloped palette from you to address the REAL issue here: how did you end up at a fic with Charles Dickens?????????? pls message me and I can give you a crash course on how to use ao3, because a beautiful world awaits you my friend.
hm well, I probably won't go over it COMPLETELY, but there are some insights into previous Charles chapters when we finally get back to a Max POV.
+ 1. I'll be honest, that was my reaction the first time I read a fic with breeding kink. I was like "oh. this is really something I've learnt about myself huh."

Yes! It’s something I take very seriously. No judgement if someone doesn’t respond to my comment on fics! But for me it’s important to respond.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Ah. Hm. Blackhole I guess? The ending isn’t angst though it’s just a more intense fic.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I think Float is very happy. It makes me smile every time I read it. Also the ending of Cobalt makes me so good. I want to rewrite Cobalt though its missing something. I posted it too soon.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Back in my YGO days I got some but I just ignored it. Usually they were just about me not finishing a fic so….yeah I get it heh
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yep. I’m an adult. I can write and enjoy smut.
But in all seriousness I do and I encourage anyone who is hesitant to write about sex, to just do it for yourself if you ever want to. You never have to post it, you can just write what you want and delete it, or keep it for yourself. Or never write about sex at all. I'll just say, getting back into this part of myself after not writing it for years has been so beneficial for my mental health. It helps me process and work through things. And writing gives me the opportunity to do that.
10. Do you write crossovers?
Well not right now, but I do know a lot about a certain mp100xOPM AU by @sodasexual and may or may not write something in that verse one day. Already drawing fanart for it so.... fanfics are likely gonna happen one day!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Uhhhh not that I….know of? (gosh I hope none have...)

Sorta co-wrote something recently that was just for fun. Also @emeraldoodles and I def co-wrote a dragonshipping fic I think when we were in high school? Dunno if I ever posted it tho I can't remember
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Hm. Puzzleshipping is my origin story. But something about Terumob really hits me in a place that I can’t describe. I just adore them.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Hmmm I have a couple one-shots I wanna write and I may not write them all.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I love writing POV descriptions of emotions. And I like to hope I’m good at it. Blackhole is this. It’s a mess of words and descriptions that I can just chew on and I love writing it. I think my recent Terumob oneshots kinda get into that space too. I like to hope that is a strength. But yeah it seems to resonate with people so I think it’s a strength?
I also think dialogue has always come easy to me. I feel like it’s the easiest thing for me to write and I hope it is realistic.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Ah.... I am terrible with consistency. I forget things and sometimes run off down paths. I also repeat myself a lot and like to describe every movement a character makes which can bog down scenes.
I have so written myself into a corner and had to weasel my way out of it hahaha This is why I am trying to talk about my stories more to friends so I DON'T do that again.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I did this a bit but I don’t anymore. It’s just too much mental work for me.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Yugioh.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
I think Black Sweatshirt, my current ageswap fic, will be my fav. It’s the most expansive writing I have done probably ever in my life. There are multiple plot lines, scenes that have already made me cry, and an ending that I just cannot wait to share with the world. I hope others enjoy it as much as I do, and I can deliver on this story.
The other one is a series called Safe Space which is a series of one-off stories touching on different emotions Shigeo has to process post-canon. Exploring the gray areas of forgiveness, confessions, grudges, anger, and love. I think I will be writing that on the side as I do other things but I love it to pieces. It means a lot to me and i hope to one day share it.

The second is for @tarantula-teeth’s a sudden red because of my god. Idk how many times I’ve laughed that hard at a fic but then also been equally deranged for the concept and world building. Chefs kiss, def drawing more for it ASAP cause Lord There Are Moments but I wanna tackle them when I’m better at drawing them :’))
Anyways sorry for rambling, the mindhunter community has so many talented writers its honestly spoiled me so rotten, so while I wish they’d make more of the show and more ppl would get into this pit I also don’t mind re reading what’s there over n over until I rot.

What is TGBTF (The Grave Below The Flowers)?
TGBTF is a Craig of the Creek Craigson (Jason x Craig) Au where The End Was Here has an alternative direction of going.
It is a lot more angsty than the show itself and is for slightly mature audiences. As it tackles darker themes.
What are some content/trigger warnings within this fic?
Gore, swearing, abuse, neglect, ptsd, drug abuse, smoking, alcoholism, animal death, Unconsensual kissing, Unconsensual touching. If anything else pops up, it is said here. Just expect lots of angst.
Where can I read the fic?
Wattpad is where the fic will be one. However, it might get cross posted on ao3 if I ever get an account. If you see the story on any other site, expect Wattpad unless I say I posted it myself on there. The fic has been stolen/pirated, and please report the story and tell me.
How often should I expect this fic to be updated?
Due to school, you should expect the fic to have updates once a week or so.
Is fanart/writing allowed?
Absolutely :D Just please make sure it follows the story and you're not completely redoing the fic yourself. For example, follow the main ship, Craigson/Honeysalt. Don't draw sm like Vancraig and claim it's for TGBTF.

are there any south park aus you like!
oh!!! this is an interesting question because i feel like a lot of south park fandom is about kind of engaging in au-ish canon, especially when it comes to aging up the characters and imagining what their lives would be like. i really enjoy that element of the fandom and how wildly different people’s takes can be.
for some reason, when i started getting into south park, my big obsession was different jobs that kyle would possibly work as an adult. i started off feeling like he could do literally anything and like he would force himself to be the best at it. now i feel like there’s some careers he absolutely would never do lmfao. i think it’s really funny to put him into mundane scenarios since i read him as very driven. i also like the fact that, since south park has been running for so long, it feels easy to set up your stories like time wise anywhere from the nineties to now- i like to play around with that when i write and draw stuff (especially like 2013 vibe lmao…) even if it doesn’t have a super blatant presence.
in terms of more concrete aus, i really enjoy reading the microceleb au and tweekomorf here on tumblr! literally loveeee- i also for some reason am lately really into stories where stan moves away from south park for high school. i was super excited when i found the old julads fic ‘rerooted’ on ao3 that deals with that premise and i still wanna make fanart of it!
