In the reblog vs likes debate, the motto we should unite under is "reblog more of the content you like to see" or "tumblr is different than social media sites and reblogs are integral here for the ecosystem to thrive" rather than "likes are useless!!!" because the latter sets the counterfactual all wrong and is condescending to the large swathes of the user base who do regularly reblog posts.

I am a part of that contingent; I reblog often and doubly so for original creations like art and fic and gifsets. But. When I simply like something rather than reblogging, it's often because the post in question is not in one of my fandoms so not something I'm directly interested in or I disagree with some of the creative choices the op made but still recognise its beauty/value/the hard work that went into it and i want to give op a little pat on the back. When people say "likes are useless!!! and you suck for simply liking and moving on," the alternative is not me reblogging all of these posts i simply liked, it's me moving on without interacting, and I don't think that's a better world for the artists or my mutuals or for me.

We can encourage people to reblog more while still recognising the value of the little hearts that appear in our notifications from people saying good job! this is neat! as they scroll thru their dash.

this has gotta be one of the most unserious, irrational things i’ve ever seen. i know this person has a weird hatred for toni because they have no tumblr etiquette (as seen by putting this shit in a nice gifset about a beautiful moment) and always has to mention they don’t like her when they reblog anything of mine that involves her, but to find something to criticize about her locker room conversation with cheryl this episode is beyond.

toni didn’t offer cheryl advice until cheryl was one afternoon away from running away from home, moving across the country and marrying a boy she’d never love. what kind of person would just sit there, see someone struggling alone, about to make a life ruining mistake, and not say a thing? toni didn’t force cheryl to do a damn thing. the only people forcing cheryl to do anything were her parents and toni was the only one telling her that she doesn’t have to do what they want because she’s the only one that can see what cheryl is actually struggling with. all she did was relate to her and tell her why she would regret doing what she was planning, and it was cheryl that decided what toni said resonated with her and followed her advice not to go through with running away from herself. and then sought toni out to ask for more advice, which toni answered by simply suggesting she read a book. where exactly does op imagine toni gave her literally any steps to follow at any point, even when cheryl literally asked her?

and lmao at “i’ve decided you’re gay”, cheryl IS gay and it was painfully obvious over the course of their interactions (you know, the flirting, the dancing, the gay panic, the freaking out at her performance and suddenly parading a boy around the next day). just like clay could tell kevin was gay when he came out to him. things were like that in the 50s, you recognized people like you in many different ways and you’d find subtle ways to communicate safely and be there for each other.

the people that hate choni are really desperately trying to find things to bitch about this season and it’s so pathetic.

i love how i've seen so so so many RWRB gifsets that at this point it's like a little scavenger hunt trying to figure out what op grouped each new set together based on. in the beginning it was obvious, we were all doing hands content (it's all about the fucking hands) and where it started/how it's going type sets but as we make more and more it's getting more esoteric every day and i think that's beautiful. i saw one yesterday specifically about alex moving his hips. there was another one about henry breathing. i love it. i hope it never ends.

hi!! i'd like to ask for your advice. i'd really like to have some mutuals (not sure if the term is correct) or like people here on tumblr or on twitter i can talk with about f1 and lestappen. the problem is that i usually don't interact with posts (apart from liking them) on any social media platform becasue i'm really anxious and insecure about stuff like this so that makes it a bit hard. i've been thinking about dming people but idk what to write because i'm worried it will come off as weird or lame. (((i just hope this message won't be like that))) my question is how do you start a this kinda conversation? do i just ask them if they want to talk or like.. ? i'm really sorry if this sounds stupid or something but i have absolutely zero skills in online interactions and you seem really nice and i hope it's okay that i reached out🫶🫶

I think lestappies are generally an inclusive and welcoming bunch of people, and many of us totally identify with the same insecurity with online interactions! I know I certainly do - as many times I see a post or tag and just want to ramble my love or my thoughts at that person but was too shy to put myself out there.

There is a lestappen discord community that you can join. I'm not sure how active it is (I haven't been on there too much; I just find it easier to talk to 1-4 people at a time! 😅), but it might be a good place to chat and make friends.

One awesome thing about tumblr is you can reblog and use tags without 'forcing' any interaction back. I've literally made friends on the basis of their reblog tag wall of thoughts on my posts, or my reblog tags on their posts. And yes, I can guarantee you that every. SINGLE. OP. loves reading the reblog tags. 🤣

I also think DMing (or Inbox Asking) people is totally fine! To be honest, I wish people did that more! I actually LOVE hearing from people who love the same things I do. I can't speak for everyone, but I think it's far from weird or lame. It's more like "omg someone wants to chat with me about lestappen?! that's amazing!"

As for starting a conversation, my go-to used to be "I just read your fic and it's fucking amazing...." I entered the lestappen fandom as a fic writer a few years ago (yes, shocking I know, *hides my current google doc folder with >100 pages of unfinished lestappen wips shamelessly*), so I know how much that means to writers, and even if I've left kudos and a comment already, sometimes I just want to reach out and tell them how much their story blew me away, made me zone out on the drive home, etc. And really it can be anything that is common ground - "saw your tags on that lestappen post - max is down SOOOO bad, right?!" "your gifset of the press conference was beautiful!" etc, etc.

And oh same, and I honestly didn't mind Shanks that much, but as for Makino, she just felt like a completely different character. That's not saying it's a bad character; it's just not the Makino I love.

(More under the cut, for those who are avoiding spoilers - or who'd rather not read my thoughts, as I unfortunately still have a few!)

One thing that was missing from the live action version of her, at least for me, was her innocence. I've always imagined her as similar to Luffy in that respect - or she embodies the same kind of naivete, at least at the beginning of the series. One example: I've always liked the idea of Dawn Island as being so far removed from the Grand Line that it really is a mythical ocean to them, and for whom devil fruits might as well be fairy tales, but the live action's choice of providing exposition about the nature of the devil fruits via Makino completely changes this. And I've been trying to figure out why this scene felt so off to me, and I think that's the reason: it's delivered with a wary kind of knowledge that just...doesn't translate to the vision I have of her in my head, of the fiercely practical but still easily-enthralled barmaid who's as charmed by Shanks' outrageous stories as Luffy is.

And this isn't me advocating for a version of Makino who's oblivious to what's happening beyond her own shores. The fact that she does know and makes an active point of keeping herself informed is an established part of Shanties canon, and to a greater extent than what's even suggested in OP canon - the wife of the Emperor who keeps detailed ledgers with all her husband's enemies that would put his first mate's to shame; who's part of his inner circle, and who knows more about what's going on in the New World than many of those who sail it. I love a Makino who's informed, but the greatest difference between my own interpretation and Netflix's version of her is that even when she knows all these things about the world - hell, even in the fics where she's seen it, and lived it - she still retains parts of her innocence, like her prevailing belief in mercy, her easily-inspired wonder, and (at least some of) her naivety. And that's my own interpretation, where I've taken my share of creative liberties with her character, but nothing that I feel is at odds with her portrayal in canon, where even when she's older and more mature, there are still moments where her innocence shines through (see: her stand-off with Dadan after Ace's death, or her reaction to the news about Sabo during the Reverie). It doesn't make her weak - if anything, my prevailing belief is that it takes strength to look at the world and all its unfairness and horrors and not let it make you jaded. And I wish we could have gotten that Makino.

(And a different wig, my god, I'm going to include an extra description of her beautiful hair in my next fic just to make up for that godawful wig)

All my beef with her Netflix characterisation aside though, her motherly moments with Luffy were lovely, and I loved that they made her physically try to stop Higuma from hurting him, so there were some things about her live action version I enjoyed<3

1. which drivers do you mainly make gifs for?

my main three are charles, lewis and seb! they also happen to be my favourite drivers on this blog. i love giffing them individually and as a pairing.

2. out of the above (if more than one) who’s your fav to make gifs for and why?

i can’t possibly choose between them. charles’ expressions and mannerisms are to die for. lewis is beautiful and super stylish. i enjoy seb’s quips and wholesome personality. i love them all equally!

3. link the favourite gifset you’ve made and tell me a little about it.

currently, it’s this one of lewis and all his 2020 championship-winning races!

from making the poster template from scratch and adding in all the little details to colouring each gif and tweaking the colour palette, i’m proud of the effort i put in this one. there was a lot i learned from the creation of this set — although there were some stuff i had to fix — and i’m incredibly satisfied with the end result. i wanted to make something as vibrant and radiant as lewis was, and to achieve that self-set goal is liberating. now i'm tempted to rewatch his 2020 season!

i also like my seb x ferrari x red gifset. it’s the second set i made and i learned a lot about colouring from it! i got my hands dirty tweaking the different colouring layers and was genuinely surprised by how well the gifs turned out.

4. link your fav gifset from another creator.

oh this is very very hard because there’s so many i really love. @josefnewgayden's lewis x fashion designers gifset is simply incredible when it comes to their use of blending and layout. @brawn-gp's lewis' 100th win in f1 set has stunning, astoundingly good typography and colouring. @ivettel’s latest seb set is a gfx masterclass; their creations tag also features lots of sets with rotoscoping and other advanced gif effects!

5. off the top of your head, tell me about the most memorable tag you've received.

there are a lot that i love and laugh about in equal measure, like "op i love your colouring!" "op this is insane!" and "OUCHHH!" but one that really stood out to me recently was "op i don't watch racing but your gifset is really nice, the design and colours are really beautiful" which made my heart ache in the best of ways.

6. which f1 media source (post race interviews, sf full accesses, no brakes, etc) is your fav to make gifs from?

honestly anything that is in good quality (1080p and above) and have downloadable links on youtube/other websites is great for me! don't really like torrenting (too much fuss) and screen recording (only for race weekends, otherwise no due to questionable quality). sf full accesses are great, i also like mercedes' videos and f1 compilations (top tens etc) featuring certain drivers.
