Ringlord High King of Everything Elrond, inspired here

I imagine in this situation elrond would have been partially tempted by boromir's declaration, but instead of trying to fight sauron with it (because even in the weirdest crack au i can think of elrond is still too genre-aware to try that) he tried to use it to supercharge his use of vilya and protect everyone.

basically Ringlord!Elrond turned the entirety of Eriador into a mega-gondolin situation: massive walls (courtesy of numenorean/eregion tech) around the regions bordering the north or Mordor, fortresses along the mountain range and several layers of gates along every road in or out. Everybody goes in; nobody goes out; everyone is safe.

and he ended up claiming the kingship to give him more authority in the process - he's High King of the Noldor and Sindar and King of the Edain (given that there are like three half-vanyar in middle-earth, he's more or less king of all children of iluvatar) and so he can have command over the entirety of the West.

and with the help of the Ring, this actually works! but the corruption starts to show eventually

he uses his kinship to Gondor to forcefully drag them into his neo-gondolin-empire-creation so he can ensure none of his great-nephews will ever have to face sauron. he extends the walls to encompass Mirkwood, because he's the high king of the sindar and has a duty to protect thranduil's realm, and unleashes the full might of his melian-lite powers to purge Sauron's Shadow and the spawn of Ungoliant from the now-Greenwood.

Galadriel and Glorfindel very much see where this is going and are very very worried. galadriel won't let him build walls around lothlorien (because she lives next door to a balrog and knows exactly what happened to gondolin) but celeborn thinks it's a good idea, since after all Doriath wouldn't have fallen if Melian's girdle had still been up. glorfindel tries to talk him out of it but the ring has taken hold

the Ring's power also enhances all his natural weirdness and powers - he has his wings and maia markings permanently activated now, with or without finwean anger. he can fully shapeshift, and he goes from raising waves in the bruinen to raising tsunamis in the great sea.

except the finwean anger seems to be permanently activated now, too, and anyone who harms someone he's deemed under his protection finds themselves the target of a rather ironic vengeance quest. the shapeshifting is looking weird now - his teeth are always sharp now, and his eyes have gone fully inhuman. sometimes he has claws and his wings look more like bats than eagles. and his water powers are more like osse's- he can't calm the waters now (goldberry is the first to notice something's up) and can only stir them into massive ship-sinking storms and tsunamis.

this progresses until he's basically Evil Luthien ruling over a continent-wide Mega-Gondolin, slaughtering orc-hordes before they even reach the white walls and sinking any naval fleet Sauron tries to send around the coast. Everybody is brought in; nobody leaves; everyone is safe...?

he figures out that the dwarven legend of "Durin's Bane" has to be one of the few first age balrogs thats still unaccounted for. and well, it's living right on his border, and he can't risk another fall of gondolin, right? so he leads a small force in there to clear moria, and they shove the balrog off the edge, but it takes one of his captains (except glorfindel) with it (maybe erestor?) and he uses the ring and saves erestor, (and maybe floods the balrog for good measure), and glorfindel is sure he saw elrond's eyes go yellow for a moment.

and even fully corrupted, he knows he can't take the ring directly into mordor. but he can wipe out sauron's armies outside the walls, to protect his kingdom - because turgon's mistake was thinking he was safe even when there were balrogs and dragons and orcs outside, right?

somewhere along the way, arwen realizes what's happening and goes to live with galadriel. one of the twins goes with her; the other stays out of loyalty but eventually follows.

elrond's kingdom has become a cross between doriath and gondolin now, with all the surrounding lands warped by ring-magic to hide it, and layers of stone walls and iron gates preventing anyone from leaving. because everyone is here; nobody leaves; everyone is... safe?

Fëanorians and their offspring.

Basically fairly random headcanons where Fëanor has nine grandchildren and his line does not die out.

Maedhros and Fingon marry and have baby Ereinion. In this AU, Maedhros does manage to find the twins Eluréd and Elurín, whom he kept under his care; he even baptizes them with names in Quenya.

Maglor adopts (kidnaps) the twins. Following canon, for a change. Although it turns out that Daeron and he fathered a child while they were still married. They divorced after Doriath, so Maglor never knew his husband was in waiting.

After the death of her beloved cousin, Celegorm keeps the only memory of her, baby Maeglin, at her request (Tugorn, who is Turgon?).

After a night of wine without measure, the always neat Caranthir spends hours in bed with Turgon, which results in little Erestor.

Curufin simply disappeared for a year and when he returned he had Telperinquar in his arms.

Amrod and Amras are the uncles who spoil their nephews.

Space is limited, so I did not include the Feanorians' spouses. Husbands, or of course, in this AU they are queer.

These are completely random headcanons that come to mind.

The canon has gone to hell.

Out of all the elves, silvans have the largest appetites.

It’s because they’re constantly moving throught the trees, or dancing, or hunting, or fighting. Basically they are outdoors 24/7.

Their appetites grew even larger during the 3rd age because they are constantly holding back sauron, and the extra stress didn’t help.

Other elves can also eat alot, but because they’re also a lot more scholarly, with entertainment preference being singing and such (as opposed to dancing which is the silvan’s main art) means they do eat less than the silvans.

The only ones who can compete are the avari and the elves back during the age of trees before Orome found them.

So imagine:

Aragorn, Elladan, Elrohir, Legolas: *sitting down in a tavern after an adventure*

Aragorn: *ordering more than even most men eat, but still substantially less than his companions*

Elladan: aww, look at our baby brother, ordering little baby portions!

Elrohir: are you sure you can eat all that? Wouldn’t want to have a tummy ache!

Legolas: *orders 1 of everything they have in the tavern, and even 2 portions of some of it*

The twins: .....

Elrohir: are you sure you can eat all that?

Legolas: *eating all his food, never pausing, but not ravenously shoving it down* i’ll be fine. My sisters eat even more than me. But are you sure you can eat all your food? Wouldn’t want anything to go to waste.

Aragorn: HA.

Bonus:

Erestor: our food supply is even more depleted than usual! We need to stock up.

Elrond: strange. It seems that every time Legolas visits our food supply dwindles ridiculously quickly. But he can’t be the cause. There’s no way an elf could eat that much.

I detested every minute of drawing that horse, I will do it again!

Anyway, I hoped I would get this out before the end of the year, alas it became the first artwork of the year instead. It's the comic I mentioned in my wips notes, and yeah, I know it doesn't make much sense for Fëanor to not recognize Miriel but I needed it for the plot, okay 😭

Plot explanation + Nerdanel bonus under the cut:

Very well, I had this idea stuck in my head for a while due to my dissatisfaction with many post reembodiment fëanorian fic (don't get me wrong, I enjoy the heck out of those fics, they just happen to not fully scratch the itch) and how it's either the fëanorian basically throwing themselves to the ground to apologize to those they hurt, something I don't really see happening, apologizing requires a lot of vulnerability, it's something very raw that I just can't see the fëanorians being able to do right off the halls (and I'm not giving the Valar any credit *harunf*) or, it goes the opposite direction, and none of the fëanorians apologize at all and it's just accepted with at most some control from the Valar, I just can't accept this while also assume they just went back to their regular places in Tirion no problem besides some people being mildly mad at them.

So this was my concoction, the first two stories wouldn't be about Fëanor at all actually, it would be an Aretyel and a Curufinrod stories running concurrently:

The first one is about Aredhel not initially wanting to ever see Celegorm after he used her as a motivation to hurt Luthien, but after Maeglin reembodiement she thinks that if she can take her son back maybe she should give her former friend a chance.

The second is initially basically Curufinrod through the ages as Finrod decides to talk to Curufin despite his better reason saying otherwise, Curufin is at first very scathing and refuses any talk at all but after a difficult conversation with Ëarwen (which is mostly her calling him a bitch) Curufin decides to reevaluate his past with Finrod, eventually reaching Celebrimbor (who is a curufinrodion in this) and their complicated relationship

And then finally, the Fëanor one, it begins some time after the others already began but runs with them as well, the beginning is basically this comic, Fëanor arrives and finds no one besides the woman he doesn't know is Miriel and accepts staying with her rather than trying to talk with his brothers, the truth is that Vairë sent the wrong hour to Arafinwë so that Miriel would get time with her son (Miriel doesn't know this, she also thinks they just left Fëanor alone) (Vairë also thought that at most she would mildly inconvenience a perfectly well paid envoy that at most would get a disappointed look from the king, never imagining that Nerdanel would show up as well)

(Considering having shorted parts for Maglor, who already had his therapy sessions in Rivendell, meeting Maedhros and Elwing again, and another for Caranthir finding out that he and Haleth had a child, Erestor, and not knowing how to go about it)

thinking about a discussion i saw this morning (please accept these very half developed ideas!) and i do think that part of the reason that the silmarillion fandom pays less attention to female characters (outside of misogyny, which is also a huge part of it) is that basically every single woman is a wife, and most of them are mothers?

i can't help but notice that the majority of popular male characters are unmarried and childless (looking at ao3 statistics, with the notable counter-examples of elrond, who is very often a child in fanfic, and feanor, arda's most divorced elf). which is possibly because many of the most influential male characters in the silmarillion are unmarried and childless, but it does feel a little disproportional.

some very disorganized thoughts on this phenomenon, presented with very little confidence because i'm just bouncing ideas around:

queer ships are far more popular in the fandom as it stands now, because it is heavily queer, and there is very little woman-to-woman interaction in the silm. the majority of the most popular m/m ships are based on some meaningful interaction between the characters. many of f/f ships involve characters that have never met (indis/miriel, finduilas/nienor) or have very limited interactions (thuringwethil/luthien). ------------ this does not explain, however, why m/m ships between people who have no interactions at at all (erestor/glorfindel, celebrimbor/maeglin, etc) routinely get more attention than f/f ships.

basically every woman's story is defined in relation to her husband's (and usually children). idril, i think, is the semi-outlier here (and to some extent aredhel). but even then -- the majority of the male characters, even if they are married, have a lot of story outside of their marriage/relationship (so much so that characters like finrod, fingon, and angrod can go from married with children to unmarried in some drafts have very little changed!). can that be said of any married female character in the text? i don't think so. once a woman in the silmarillion marries and has children, the progression of her story is almost always defined very heavily by her relationship to her husband and children. fingon rules the same and dies the same whether or not he has a wife and son -- idril's story would be very different without tuor and earendil. feanor gets to do a lot of things after his marriage to nerdanel -- fingolfin does very much after his marriage to anaire. both of the women disappear from the story once their marriages are no longer relevant. ---- here i will note that some male characters ARE heavily defined by their relationships to their families. turgon, whose motivations are very heavily based around the death of his wife and protecting his daughter, comes to mind. so does thingol, whose wife and daughter are equally central to his story. that said, neither of those characters is popular in fandom.

to expand on the previous point: characters whose main stories are romance stories, including male characters, do not tend to be very popular. earendil has just under 700 works on ao3. beren has just over 500. (elwing and luthien, for reference, have just over 700 and 800 respectively). despite our love for shipping, the fandom seems to be disinterested in parts of the book with a heavy romance focus. is it possible that the fact that nearly every single woman having a prominent romance arc "turns fandom off" them?

only four unmarried women come to mind as counter examples (watch me miss someone obvious). these are finduilas, haleth, findis, and lalwen. findis and lalwen are footnotes that disappear quickly from the story without being given much to do (which doesn't stop us with erestor or caranthir, but still). finduilas, despite being unmarried, is heavily defined by a tragic love triangle. haleth is the notable exception -- i would say she is more popular in fandom than many women, but less than most male characters. the only real explanations i can give for her getting so little fandom attention is misogyny/bias, the general fact that humans in the silmarillion get less love than elves in fandom, and and possibly her having little connection to any of the other popular characters outside of caranthir.

that being said, i do still think misogyny/the general fandom tendency to ignore female characters in favor of male ones is responsible for a good chunk of the difference. i also really welcome feedback on these thoughts because i feel very uncertain of them. the more i think about it, the more i can find counter-examples and outliers to a lot of the trends i'm talking about here -- perhaps i overgeneralized. is there no coherent analysis to be drawn here?

currently leaning in the direction of "this is a vague but not all-encompassing trend in the text, which affects fandom to some extent without explaining the preference for male characters and m/m ships entirely."

So pals, a Glorestor enemies-to-lovers story took over my brain last night. Tentatively called Strange Bedfellows, the story takes place in Imladris shortly after Glorfindel’s return to Middle Earth. Erestor is a former follower of Fëanor who is a little too sharp around the edges for Glorfindel’s taste. Glorfindel, formerly of Gondolin and newly reincarnated, is a ray of sunshine – sometimes too harsh for Erestor to handle. When Elrond comes up with a plan to bring them together, will it end up pushing them further apart?

Here’s a snippet from what I’ve been writing!

“I-“ Glorfindel began.

“I don’t want to hear it.”

“My lord,” Erestor tried to say, but Elrond cut him off with an outstretched palm.

“Not another word. From either of you. I gathered you here to listen to what I have to say, not to be subjected to another horrible outburst. Glorfindel, I expected better. You may have been forced to cross the Helcaraxë, but that does not exempt you from basic decency. Imladris is a place where any elf – nay, any person – can seek a fresh start, regardless of what they may have done in a past life. And speaking of past lives,” he snapped, turned to Erestor, “Mocking an elf’s death is unbecoming of anyone, and frankly shocking coming from you. I have known you for an age, Erestor, and I have never heard you say such a thing.”

They both hung their heads, saying nothing.

“I want you both to reflect on this, which is why you will be spending one week living together.”

Erestor made a strangled noise. Glorfindel’s jaw dropped.

“What?” They shouted.

“And that’s not all. You will take all of your meals together, and all of your free time will be spent in each other’s company.”

“You can’t be serious!” Glorfindel exclaimed.

Elrond smiled, and it was a vision of serenity – or was it wickedness?

“Go on, Glorfindel, bring your things to Erestor’s room.”

They think they are being completely oblivious - but the stares and the visually relaxing of their stress-filled bodies, or how they speak to with the utmost care trying to throw in a few nice words here or there, that speaks volumes to others. They do not know show to show proper affection - or it would take time to learn so instead they showers you with gifts once they have come to terms with their feelings - once the gifts come in they will not stop until you tell them it is too much xD

They will make it very obvious they are interest in you so - except lots of PDA when trying to flirt with you, especially when you fall hard and fast.

They need to know where you are all times to keep themselves sane too. Their overprotectiveness speaks for their lover for you. Okay, you must tell us about αβΩ au

I'm going to call it an atypical alpha/beta/omega take on what Middle-earth could be like if the Valar didn't bring the elves to Valinor/the elves refused to go. This all came about when someone did some art of Glorfindel, Erestor, and Elrond and mentioned that it was for an a/b/o au with minimal explanation. Of course, I and @nighttimepatrons went a little crazy over it.

What I've actually written so far is mostly focused on Celebrian, Gil-galad, and Elrond, who are all married and very happy. Celebrian is a princess of the Noldor and Sindar realms and travels gracefully from diplomatic meeting to minor crisis. Gil-galad is a merchant and low-level politician in Lindon working very hard to make sure he's never connected to the High Family (Finwe's family) because thoughts of somehow becoming king haunt his nightmares. Elrond's a healer raised by the nomadic Feanorians who has the unfortunate habit of complicating Gil-galad's life because the path to political upheaval is paved with good intentions (re: bringing Avari Glorfindel to Lindon and picture).

The core idea for the au is that Elrond went on an expedition with Pengolodh and others to document one of the few Avari tribes that's been untouched by the outside world since leaving Cuivienen, but the tribe lives within another realm that is very set on keeping them free of outside influences so the research group has to promise to not interact or let themselves be seen by anyone in the tribe. Well, as one might expect, this doesn't go as planned. A great beast of the wilds attacks the group but an Avari they'd been watching (Glorfindel) steps and saves them but is grievously wounded and will die unless they help him. Elrond, being Elrond, insists on doing what he can in the field and on smuggling him back to Lindon on one of Gil-galad's ships when it becomes clear the Avari will die without in-depth medical care.

Really, it's an excuse for me to yank Glorfindel out of his home and shove him into a new culture because I love him being an outsider among the Noldor. (I'm basic, what can I say?)

Nightie and I also think A Lot about Miriel/Indis/Finwe and Feanor :) (spoiler: Feanor gets mirked by some Men which inspires the first Manslaying)

Anyway, you might be wondering what any of this has to do with a/b/o. Well, in the 'modern realms' like the Noldor and Sindar, very little importance is put on if someone's an alpha (Celebrian), beta (Gil-galad), or omega (Elrond). Sure, sometimes someone could have hormonal things that make them act a bit different (re: Elrond's nesting habits), but it's no big deal. HOWEVER, the Avari tribe has Very Different feelings on the matter.

The tribe believes that an evil spirit or force causes elves to become alphas or omegas (they don't use those terms but whatever). There isn't much they can do if someone becomes an omega, but generally omegas can live a normal life but just lose control of their bodies sometimes. So, omegas can stay in the tribe but don't have much respect unless they dedicate themselves to healing and or soothsaying etc. Alphas, on the other hand, are considered violent and dangerous and are not allowed to stay with the tribe after reaching adulthood unless they go through a ritual to cast the evil spirit from them. This involves a moderate degree of mutilation and pain and is very unpleasant and sometimes people die during it.

Glorfindel's an alpha. He went through that ritual and is a very good warrior/hunter/protector for the tribe. He is very proud of his scars.

This makes things a bit awkward in Lindon, where everyone is horrified by this thing that he takes deep pride in.

Anyway, that's a lot and there's even more but I should probably stop (warm hug if you read all that).

A very important update to my Maglor = Erestor, Finrod = Gildor, and Daeron = Lindir post.

They all take shifts as the Tra-la-la-lally elf.

Gildor thinks it's delightful and uses it as a chance to talk to all the valley's visitors. He actually uses some of his free time to teach Glorfindel some basic bard skills. Glorfindel is surprisingly into it.

Lindir refused to at first because he's composed full symphonies before, why should he spend his time on that, but then Gandalf accused him of being too afraid to improvise rhyming lyrics and the challenge was on.

Erestor just desperately needs some Tra-la-la-lally in his life. He's also re-learning to sing without making everyone around him experience the horrors. It's good practice.

Elrond, who arranged this, thought it was a master stroke because surely, if they have to talk to each other about Tra-la-la-lally duty, they'll realize, right?

They've all become pretty good friends over the years, and spend plenty of time together! They still have no idea.

Thranduil's gotten in on the betting pool. He's betting on it taking divine intervention.

I absolutely loved your snippet from Multiple Words Monday for Psalms for the Strange, another eldritch!Maglor story. Can you tell me more about that? Because I would LOVE to know more :D

Psalms for the Strange is another bonus story for my eldritch!Maglor series, and can be seen as a sort of fluffy epilogue-like tale for the whole "eldritch creature in Valinor" arc. Maglor's been allowed to stay in the blessed lands by the Valar, but that doesn't mean its going to be easy to fit into the larger society.

The basic set up is this: Lindir finds out about a music competition, and decides that he and his eldritch bff should join in. There are a few problems, such as Lindir needing a new instrument and Maglor's skills are VERY rusty after thousands of years of not playing, but there's also the issue of expectations. Valinor is a land of perfection, after all. How do you fit a kinslayer-war criminal-eldritch monster (once the greatest bard of all the Noldor/the world) into such a place?

Like the rest of my eldritch stories, the answer comes through friendship and family and love (and having a friend who won't let anyone exclude you, no matter how terrifying you may become)

Staring: Finrod and many other bard characters, the horror of perfection and rigid standards, LINDIR POV, the power of friendship, and lots of fluff.

I was worried about writing it for a long time, because it is very light-hearted and much less horror-ish compared to the other fics in this series, but if you can't write a fluffy epilogue-ish story about your own eldritch AU, then what can you do?

Here's another little snippet:

No. Wrong again! Despite the frustration in his tone, Maglor smiled. For thousands of years he’d been unable to play any instrument. Being able to make music again, even terrible music, brought him joy. I just can’t get this scale right.

“You were closer this time,” said Lindir. Harps could be tricky for someone who had to relearn how to use their fingers with such careful precision. “You’ll get it eventually.”

Sooner rather than later I hope. I had this mastered before I turned a hundred. Have you decided what to write your next song about?

“Not yet,” said Lindir. “But I’m seeing my parents for lunch today. Perhaps I shall find some inspiration along the way.”

Maglor’s fingers froze over the harp, and he sent Lindir a worried look, the music around him softening. You haven’t spoken about them before.

“There isn't much to say,” explained Lindir. “They sailed during the Second Age after they were sure I could take care of myself.” Maglor was still staring at him. “What?”

They left you?

“No.” Lindir had talked about his parents once to Erestor, many years ago, and had run into the same sort of worries. “It's not - it's not a bad thing, Maglor. They love me, and I love them. It's just a distant sort of love. We’re just very different and lead our own lives. It's not like you and Elrond, or you and your parents.” Lindir patted his arm. “It’s fine. Really. We’ve always just been a couple and a child rather than anything else. I will see them for lunch, have a pleasant time, and then leave to work on more exciting things.”

If you’re sure. But call me if anything unpleasant happens. I’ll hear you, no matter where you are.

Lindir smiled. Maglor’s face could change a thousand times, but deep down he would always be the same. “Yes, I know.”

I have finally started creating my "friends" household (i.e., the household that doesn't really get played so much as they populate the neighborhood and become your primary Sims' friends) and it's funny how the creation of Ecthelion is basically me doing my best to create:

The richest, most posh-looking mf in this neighborhood;

Guy who is handsome in that out-of-your-league kind of way;

Intelligent, musically-inclined, perfectionist snob who is sure to give Erestor a run for his money (Erestor is only two out three of these things lmao).

I think that fits Ecthelion pretty well 🤭 (at least by how I write him anyway)

He and Glorfindel meet and catch up.

He is, of course, created to be Glorfindel's best friend. So far, so good! They're getting along!

To be clear, I've had this Glorestor household for years now and they are still as close as ever.

I'm glad I don't really see ship wars nowadays, because there used to be a time when it was Not Great™, and that's the reason why I didn't touch Ecthelion back then. That's sad though because fast forward to years later, I found I like Ecthelion a lot actually! It's just that I don't really like drama, so even with Ecthelion in the picture, I never have him as a third party. I know some people enjoy that and that is of course okay, just not really my thing personally.

Anyway, Ecthelion comes to visit again.

Okay, I say I don't like drama, but I did have a little giggle when Erestor joined the group. (Erestor has a different set of friends, so I wasn't really planning to have him be friends with Ecthelion, but welp—)

They're formal at first... but I think that worked out well given their personalities. I thiiiiiink (because it's been a while since I last checked Erestor's profile) Ecthelion and Erestor share the genius + perfectionist traits in my game, and I think they're both formal types. Headcanons about them really are a lot alike. Makes you wonder about those ship wars again because they're practically the same person LOL

Okay, so Glorfindel left.

Erestor shifted closer to Ecthelion and I was like HUH and then OH NOOO now I ship them LMAO this is why I end up accidentally taking Ecthelion not as part of a love triangle but part of a triad LMAO GLORFINDEL COME BACK—
