Every now and then you find a game

And this game makes you go “Why the fuck am I playing this?” as you spend hours in it. Maybe its because the map looks empty on first glance, maybe its cause you don’t really see the mechanical complexity at first. But something grips you. You know there’s more, but you don’t really understand it. So you try to understand it. And as you gain understanding, as you start to learn the tricks and tips, as you start to expand your options and possibilities and learn the map and why things keep going wrong and why the game is designed the way it is, your entire first opinion goes out the window. You see the joy and meaning within something that once felt empty and meaningless. And for me, the most recent version of That Game? Kenshi. Kenshi is a hidden gem made in an outdated engine over what looks to me like a decade long dev process. Kenshi crashes. Not as frequently as a Bethesda open world game, but it does it enough to be annoying. Kenshi’s fighting will get your character killed, and it won’t even pretend its remorseful about that because its new game option is designed much like the options you find in roguelites. it is a game where the illusion of safety holds you back. Kenshi is the kind of game that wants you to take risks but also assess what those risks are so you can survive. Its a game where you are most likely to die on your initial runs because you will not understand enough. Its a game where knowing when/if you should travel through an area is just as important as getting armor on your people. And its a game where once you understand its survival enough, that survival can’t hold you back from getting to the point where you thrive. Trying to scrap together enough cats for a sword becomes trying to scrap enough cats together for a team. Trying to defend a farming outpost so you don’t have to buy food anymore turns into an empire of Hashish behind a heavily fortified wall where you have so much food you hire more people so you can have it all get eaten. And running from the dangerous things on the map becomes seeking them out for loot, bounties or glory.
