Noho Hank and the closet

Watching Hank cry upon learning HE was a side piece and that Cristobal had a wife (and possibly children on top of that) hurt me more than watching anything else in the show. It was so powerful.

I can tell that in that moment in the closet Hank felt for her there. He in that moment was feeling that same pain as Elena. Because before this episode I thought Hank was somewhat aware of Cristobal's prior engagements and was trying to help him work through that. However, I was totally wrong. HE NEVER KNEW. He did not know Cristobal was already married and with a woman. And he probably also does not know about his children still in Bolivia. I want Hank and Cristobal so badly to be happy but I don't know if that's going to happen at this point given the massive betrayal. That massive tattoo of the virgin Mary on Hank's chest is a Russian prison tat that means many things, but loyalty is a big part of it. Usually, it entails loyalty to a suit (crime family) or it serves as loyalty to the gang lifestyle since that tattoo is given to those frequently in and out of prison as a good luck charm... but Hank is also loyal to the people he loves. He for some reason still talks to and helps Barry, he is loyal to his guys because he treats them more like friends, and Cristobal is his boyfriend who he loves a lot. He this entire time has remained loyal but Cristobal has not been. He broke 2 hearts: Hank's and Elena's.

Not to mention the location of Hank in this scene is very powerful symbolically. 

Cristobal's betrayal and Elena's rampage and subsequent breakdown when she thinks nobody is watching literally force Hank into the closet. Its very literal because... well... he is literally in a closet. But its also very metaphorical because he finally got to be himself for once (or at least love who he wants without threat of persecution) and he gets burned for it. Not only is his life literally at risk here, but he also just got his heart and what confidence he had shattered by this which forced him to go back into the closet once again to protect himself (both literally and symbolically). Hank is not a person who wants to hurt people, at least in this specific way since he values interpersonal relationships, and seeing the pain Elena is in and knowing that he was just as played as she was probably was enough to make him go back to living a double live (as a mobster and gay man) instead of being his authentic self.  

I look forward to seeing what happens next but I am very sad for Hank here. All he wanted was to be happy and he got burned. 

barry's 3×08 is a fucking masterpiece, the cinematography, bill's direction, sarah goldberg's performance, henry winkler as amazing as ever, anthony carrigan breaking my heart and mother fucking bill hader proving time and time again that he's a great actor. incredible end of the season: 10/10

I normally don't make posts like this, but I am so devistated by how many sapphic and wlw shows have been cancelled. Warrior Nun being the most recent is heartbreaking. This show dealt with so many difficult topics of trauma and coping so beautifly and seeing Netflix cancel it breaks me. There is a petition though to try and get Warrior Nun picked up by another service or channel, please sign it even if you haven't watched. This show is so important to many different diversity groups.
