After watching the Barbie trailer, my parents are arguing over whether, as a previous diplomat, Barbie should have diplomatic immunity in a foreign country (her home country being Barbieland) and thus whether her arrest by LAPD is unlawful.

Saw some new movies this weekend! Loved all of them, but I’m still emotionally recovering.

reading comments under the barbie movie gifset... some people really don't understand the art of irony huh?

ryan gosling is meant to look fake and ugly asf, everything is supposed to look as weird and extra as possible, which part of it you don't get? it's not meant to be unironically pretty, you're not meant to like the aesthetic (unless you do in which case, i hear you) but you're supposed to understand the irony of a bunch of grown people and renowned actors playing plastic toys in... a musical? perhaps? in order to enjoy it, you'll have to embrace the weirdness, the exaggeration, the unreality, the eye-soaring pink, all of which are artistic devices that i KNOW are going to make this production groundbreaking. personally i expect this movie to be a diagnosis of society or some Don't Look Up shit anyway i CANNOT WAIT

of course movies are supposed to make you feel something it’s just that greta gerwig’s filmography manages to somehow specifically activate the exact state of my brain in seventh grade when i realized that my cishet girl peers were having life experiences that i could not ever be included in or understand because they were cishet girls and i wasn’t. sad!

in my head, phil submitted these videos as his happy memories, because seeing dan filled with joy, acting silly while playing with cute animals, is one of his favourite things in the world... we got to see dan through phil's eyes (again). every time they share these moments with us, i feel like the luckiest person on earth.

plagued by thoughts of barbie and queerness

specifically after my friend and i went to see it and were discussing it and i brought up the obvious queer coding she said ‘oh yeah weird barbie’ and i went ‘oh. no? stereotypical barbie??’

and when we unpacked it further i realised that she’d seen weird barbie as inherently queer bc of the way she’d been ostracised and called names that she made her own in time and could never fit in with the other barbies because of who she was and how she looked? and i saw stereotypical barbie as queer because of her lack of attraction to the people she was meant to be attracted to, liking them but never able to do so in the way they liked her. of being expected to act and be certain ways because of how she looked and the life she lived but not really wanting those things

honestly i don’t really have a point with this it’s just been ceaselessly rattling around in my lil brain

You cannot replicate or recreate Barbenheimer. Barbenheimer was organic, spontaneous because people saw that these two movies--bright, colorful, comedic Barbie and dark, moody Oppenheimer--were being released on the same day and ran with it. Barbenheimer was lightning in a bottle.

Execs will try to replicate it because money. But it won't work. Consumers will see right through the astroturfed marketing, and whatever the execs try will fail. We must let Barbenheimer be a one-and-done for the sake of the movie industry.
