so, I asked @banira-san from this post and she asked me these:

🌈 + tell me about your day

it was so-so haha. I woke up early this morning and head to the university to settle my enrollment and fees. it was nothing big and then I went to the library to do some design research until noon. on the way back, there was students' central event in the leisure area of our university and they had barbecues and hot dogs for free! the queue was so long and I was kind of in a hurry so no hot dogs for me ;A; back home, I settled down and start to cook for lunch + dinner then internet surfing! currently, reading my research materials orz what is life.

lol xD right now, it would be; WHY THE DUE DATE FOR THE FEES PAYMENT IS SO FREAKING NEAR as it, the duration between fees announcement until due date was so short that it became a burden for a private student like me :/ I just wish they'll let student pay it, at least, until middle semester so the students won't feel so pressured but oh well.

not gonna lie, @banira-san is my closest friend here too and we always chat through tumblr and twitter whenever we can. she’s like, the nicest person you could ever find and very chill most of the time. I’m always thankful for her constantly sharing stuff especially about AAA and lol. oh yeah, she’s the reason why I starting to like honoka a lot!

I have a kouhai! @egutan is one of my longest online (and now, real life!) friend since 2010. known her through livejournal and our interest always collide from j-idols to anime, to drama cd and seiyuu asdfghjkl; she’s very sweet and her graphics are always on point!

@chuutohanpa is my architecture comrade + johnny’s + jdramas xD she can be really funny and talkative when you read her tweets. also, we share the same disease; ossan fever! haha

@basashichigo and @tanteichigo are my fav yutoyama stans :) whenever I see these two on tumblr and twitter, my dashboard and timeline become active :) I rarely talk with you guys but we have good relationship bc some of our interests are similar. IDK why but whenever I think of riko, vai’s name will come next and vice versa :P

I know @carrotcouple back few months ago because of our intense love for akayona and noragami. bc of her, my dashboard is full of those two anime and now I’m crying because of hakyona kiss and that last part of noragami’s latest chapter. thanks sunny, for inviting me to ‘jae-ha is the bae’ skype group though I literally went missing after couple of chats, I’m sorry I’m very old and I’m lazy orz

@yoletshaha is actually my real life best friend. we went to the same university and both of us are a very private person. but then, she got busted with me when I saw her SHINee stuff and since then, we were always together. it feels natural to have her around me. currently, both of us are pursuing our Masters at different university but we always keep in touch with each other and I went out with her quite a lot when I came back to my home country. and tbqh, I never met anyone that is so similar to me hehe

haha, your crush is so cute, citra! I guess, I understand how it feels because I’ve been in that situation before lol. and thanks for the questions xD it was funnnnnn and I just realised I am blessed to have these amazing people around me.

(Brackets) indicate notes that are originally in the interview, while {t/n: brackets} indicate my commentary, which I will keep to a minimum because no one wants to hear me screaming. How did I manage such a feat... the truth is, I went back afterwards to delete my brackets…

Comments and suggestions are very welcome -I have tried my best to translate this but I am by no means an expert, so please correct me if I get anything wrong.

{t/n: Omoi, translated here as thoughts, can have many connotations. It also means feelings, affection, desire, wish, hope, expectation, experience, even love. The interpretation is up to you; but from hereon in I’ll adjust accordingly in the translations in response to the context of the sentence.}

“The art of polishing the power to convey.”

No matter how deep, or how strong your thoughts may seem, if you don’t convey them properly, they will not reach your partner’s heart. You end up embarrassing yourself, or perhaps you gathered up all of your courage to communicate, only to end in misunderstanding. First of all, what is important lies in your thoughts. Next, what is absolutely necessary is the technique in properly conveying those thoughts to your partner. If you wish to cherish those feelings that you have always held close to your heart, it is very important to learn the correct technique of doing so. This issue’s special feature is a lesson in how the power to convey can be added to oneself. We have been fortunate to feature guests from various circles who are talented in conveying their thoughts, to teach us their secret to holding on to their power to convey. You, who hold back your feelings to the point of overflowing -apply what you learn from these lessons, and surely you will be succeed in communicating your wishes!

Ryuji side:

The words that I wish to convey now are “thank you”.

Interviewer: Firstly, Imaichi-san, what kind of person is Tosaka-san?

Ryuji: He’s a person who is always observing the people around him, I think. On the 3jsb members’ birthdays, Omi (Tosaka-san) is the person who never fails to properly give them a present. He never expresses how he really feels to me, so it doesn’t seem like he’d be the type to have an interest in other people’s birthdays, but in truth, he really takes notice, and he puts a lot of thought into it. But he is a sort of guy who can keep that behaviour under wraps and pull off that nonchalant look with anything that he does.

I: Imaichi-san, what kind of birthday present did you receive from Tosaka-san?

R: Omi always gets me clothes. Last year I got a border knit.

I: What do you wish to change about how you convey your thoughts to Tosaka-san as you illustrate him?

R: That’s a tough question… (laughs). Usually, with Omi we talk about things like the music we like, but we don’t really talk about work. Just like how it’s easier to talk about work to people from another company than it is to talk to people from the same working environment, I find it easier to talk about work to the performers. From the time since Omi and I went to the audition up to now, the two of us have always worked together as the twin vocalists -so when it comes to our jobs, we’re already of one body and mind, and even without verbal communication we can very much understand what the other person is thinking. But, in terms of what I want to change about conveying something to him, it must be “thank you”. If Omi isn’t here, I wouldn’t be here either -and that’s what that means to be twin vocalists, I think. –um, that’s kind of embarrassing isn’t it (laughs).

I: What do you wish to convey to the other members in Sandaime JSB?

R: Firstly, Ken-chan (Yamashita Kenjiro san) is like a big brother to me; he brings harmony to the atmosphere just by being there. Recently, I went to buy a takoyaki maker with Ken-chan, and we had a takoyaki party. That was a lot of fun, and I’d like to do that again. So, to Ken-chan, I want to say “thank you for the takoyaki!” (laughs). Gan-chan (Iwata Takanori-san) is working as a part of EXILE, as well as performing in dramas and movies, and is the busiest person out of all the members. Gan-chan’s energy is a form of encouragement as well as a stimulus, so I want to add in this aspect of my gratitude and say “thank you for all your hard work. If you get the time, have a good rest!” To Elly, of course I want to say nothing other than “you’re the best!” Elly is in charge of all the choreography for Sandaime JSB’s songs, and I’m always awestruck by his imagination. Elly is absolutely indispensable in all of our performances, the mood maker who can get the audience hyped up, and is a person who has given a lot to Sandaime JSB. Naoto-san, (Kobayashi) Naoki-san, I just want to say “thank you” to them. I think that the founding of Sandaime JSB would have been impossible without them, so their presence is something we really, really rely on. Yesterday I went to karaoke with Naoki-san, so I want to say “let’s go karaoke again sometime”, and Naoto-san, since we’re both quite into red wine, I want to say to him “let’s have a red wine appreciation group sometime soon!” (laughs).

I think that I definitely throw the fastball {t/n: i.e. straightforward and direct} when it comes to women.

I: In the song ‘Pride’ for which Imaichi-san wrote the lyrics, there is the line 伝えなきゃ思っていないのと同じ (Unless I tell you we cannot feel the same)-what were your thoughts while you wrote this?

R: It’s from my own personal experience. I thought they would understand even if I didn’t say anything about how I feel, but in truth there were probably many occasions in which my thoughts have completely failed to reach them. In the end, it’s not always the case that your thoughts will properly reach your partner, and when that happens it’s as if those feelings you hold seem to become something like a lie.

I: Imaichi-san, are you the type who is successful when there is something that you wish to convey?

R: No, not at all (laughs). That’s why I wrote those lyrics, I think. I thought that there is definitely someone out there who has had a similar experience to me. In the work environment or in school, there are occasions in which someone may have thought ‘it might be better to have done that in this way’, but were too concerned over the perception of people around them to speak up. I think that when you give an opinion, such as “I want the group to improve”, if there is a core to that thing that you wish to convey, then even if words aren’t enough, your feelings will still definitely reach them.

I: Well then, if there’s a woman who you had feelings for, what kind of words would you say to her to convey how you felt?

R: That’s so sudden (laughs). But I’m definitely the type to throw the fastball when it comes to women. What kind of words? They’re probably… “I like you”, I guess (laughs). To be honest, there’s also a part of me who’ll worry about whether I’ll manage to win her affection, about how embarrassing this is, about how I want to come across as looking cool. But I just want to show her how I feel in an honest and simple way, I think.

Even without words, we can share our thoughts.

I: From Tosaka-san’s point of view, what is Imaichi-san like?

O: He’s very dedicated. He’s a straightforward, passionate, and honest man. He always tackles music and singing head-on, and while he chases after himself to better himself he often goes into meticulous detail to correct his condition. That stoicism and honesty he has is something that has never changed in the past nor in the present, I think.

I: As vocalists, you two front the group. When you’re recording for a new song, for example, what kind of communication happens between you two?

O: I don’t know how other twin vocalists go about this, but we don’t especially get together to discuss things beforehand. If you know your partner’s style of singing and the nuances of their voice, then it will be second nature for one partner to take on the role of acceptance. For example, without words, we can feel what the other person feels and then convey it -that is our form. Therefore, we possess a strong, shared consciousness while looking in the same direction as a group in the writing of a song.

{t/n: two points here if I may! First, Omi is making some pretty big claims about how he and Ryuji work together on Ryuji’s behalf. I read that in Japan it’s customary to add “I think that” to any opinion you express, no matter how humble and insignificant they may be, but Omi just says “we work this way” bluntly. You may notice that Ryuji adds “I think that” in some of his opinions too. Secondly, to clarify his point about taking on the role of acceptance in singing, I think he means here that one person will naturally adjust how they sing a phrase accordingly to find the right balance, because they know exactly how their partner would interpret the song. For instance, in Born in the Exile, you may notice that Ryuji begins the song with a markedly soft and pensive timbre to his voice, suited to the lyrics the morning when my tears overflowed, the night when I was alone, I gave in to the sadness until it would heal itself. Next, Omi comes in with the lyrics suddenly as I wander the streets, I lost my way towards tomorrow. But softly, somewhere from the light, I hear a faint voice -a melody, from a singing soul. These lyrics carry anticipation, hope, the connotations of grasping a brighter future, and accordingly, Omi sings them at about mf in comparison to Ryuji’s p, with a lot of strength to his intonations, and I have always felt this volume contrast strange until I just saw the lyrics and read Omi’s answer to this question. We might interpret here, to go back to Omi’s answer to the interviewer -Ryuji asks a question, he sits and accepts, he waits for his sorrow to heal, but Omi hears the voice and actively runs towards it.}

I: Lately, we have the impression that the personalities of each member are becoming more prominent than usual.

O: That seems to be the case. Even in aspects of the job where the leaders used to chiefly be in charge, now, those jobs are usually distributed evenly amongst the seven of us. “Let’s let this person be in charge of this” and “I’d better be the person to take care of this” -the members come to share the tasks naturally in this fashion - this is probably the sort of atmosphere that Sandaime JSB has.

I: Well then, please use this occasion to tell us the things that you wish to convey to each member.

O: To every member? Well yes… Naoto-san is very dexterous, being multi-talented in dance, theatre as well as the organisation of our live performances. Recently, when we went to a members’ drinking party, we had the chance to talk passionately about using the phrase “I want to become like this” as a goal. If I can better reach Naoto-san’s level by aiming for this goal, I think that Sandaime JSB will achieve an even greater existence. When (Kobayashi) Naoki-san is acting, he looks very grave, but in actual fact he’s really bright and entertaining! This year the members have fallen multiple times for his antics, so I think I’d like to see more instances where he frontally shows us his “Charming Naoki” appeal (laughs). And then Kenjiro-kun. He’s now a radio personality for his show, and his acting is great too. I’d like to see him develop this dexterous side of him even more. With regards to Elly, I wonder if it’s ok to call him a producer at this point. He’s got great creative ability of course, but hanging out with him in private really puts me at ease. I hope that Elly will continue to stay this way. Gan-chan (Iwata Takanori-san) … please continue to do a good job acting as a princely character (laughs). I think that he disliked this at first, but it looks like he’s already come to terms with it. Please continue on and maintain your sweet smile.

The importance of “conveying your thoughts” that the members have taught you

I: Now, is there something you wish to change now, and convey to Imaichi-san?

O: We’re the same age and our start was the same, and then we’re also the vocals for the same group. I think that this can be nothing other than fate. To me he is a rival, a partner, the number one person who understands me the most. From now on, I think that we’ll begin to pursue a range of solo projects, and various kinds of music that we’re each interested in making, but it will be great if we can take those experiences we learn separately back into the group when we return.

I: In passing, please tell us a surprising side to Imaichi-san that only Tosaka-san knows.

O: … I guess it must be the thing where when he gets drunk he acts like a spoiled child? {t/n: alternative translations, he fawns over Omi, or becomes coquettish.} I don’t mean that he becomes an “甘えキャラ” {t/n: something like a clingy, needy, kawaii princess type} exactly, because for some reason, he only acts like that towards me. To be honest, it’s kind of annoying, but… (laughs). {t/n: fyi in an episode of Ken’s ANN Ryuji denied this, Ken apologized to the An-an staff, and they both called Omi a liar.}

I: Lastly, since our theme for this special issue is “the power to convey”, Tosaka-san, are you the type to straight away express your thoughts?

O: I’m the type to feel uneasy if I don’t express my thoughts while I’m still passionate about them. For example, if an idea for a new song pops up in my head, I’ll send a message to the members on our LINE group chat even if it’s in the middle of the night.

I: Even when it comes to women?

O: Yes, I’ll probably act the same way. If I like them then I’ll say “I like you”, and for instance, even during the stage before I fall for them I’ll possibly convey to them something like “I’m interested in you”. In reverse, I think that I would also like her to express her feelings to me straightforwardly. The fact that I have come to realise the importance of conveying feelings in this honest manner is precisely because of the members and our senpai. What I mean is that, I feel that it is because of Sandaime JSB that my understanding of “human kindness” can continue to grow and mature throughout the years.

challenge as AAA for the single “MAGIC” (Takahiro x Misako x Shinjiro)

Uno: “MAGIC” is a mature, mysterious love song. It’s sexier than what the current AAA sings, or rather, it’s playful which makes it a fun song.

Nishijima: Since the main tune will be the saxophone, when we first heard it, all the members said “the intro is good”. Since songs with such mood won’t be heard unless it’s from an album, we were also surprised that it’ll be a single.

Atae: It’s a song that gave us a challenge as AAA, ne. Since the album will also be out on February 22, I hope everyone will listen to it without fail. Surprisingly, our album this time has a lot of cheerful songs.

Nishijima: Since we are gloomy (laughs), they might have been wishing for cheerful songs.

Atae: Don’t lump me in with you (laughs).

Uno: It’s been a while since we last have an original album, so working on it felt fresh too, ne.

Atae: Since we’re starting 2017 with a single and an album, it’ll be nice if we could create more opportunities to meet all our fans.

Nishijima: Since we performed in domes in Tokyo and Osaka last year, it’ll be nice if we could share that scenery in various places this year. Though it’s just an ideal, ne. When we’re doing this, talking about our goals, it’s almost always like it has been decided, but no, it hasn’t (laughs).

Uno: when it comes to AAA, there’s really nothing that has been certainly decided (laughs). There’s no rail(road). But that’s exactly why it’s nice if we could do what we want to do at the time.

Atae: And also, I personally would like to go to N.Y.

Nishijima: you can go anytime since you’re studying in LA, can’t you (laughs). Me too, it’s about time to properly remember English but there’s no signs that Shinjiro’s going to teach me.

Atae: That’s not the case, you know. I kinda think “it’s good” to teach, you know?

Uno: that way of speaking, it doesn’t sound like “it’s good” at all….. (laughs)

Nishijima: Our Shinjiro is a foreign talent so please cut that part (laughs).

Another update on Chiaki's gift!

I had the weirdest sjsb dream

tagging @banira-san because it reminded me of what you said about Gun and starbucks

I dreamt that there was a mass evacuation due to toxins in the air and the government ordered everyone to go on jet planes. I went on a plane with my parents and the plane was just taking off from pedestrian walking paths and bumping its nose into walls all the time. Also the seats were sideways and had no seatbelts but we got there safely anyway.

The plane went over a wall into a theme park owned by LDH and they provided lodgings for everybody.

I got separated from my parents and ended up in this room where you can get clothes if you didn’t have extra luggage any on you. Except all the clothes were hung up like in a department store and were quite fashionable. Then I see Naoto looking through the clothes and he pulled up this black tasseled cotton scarf and was wrapping it this way and that in front of the mirror. I got the same one but in khaki and went up and said “hey Naoto-san you can wear it around your waist”. So we both did and then he said “lolololol it’s like a skirt!” and I was like “lol it is!” Then Omi came to join us but he just smiled and looked pretty and didn’t say much.

Naoto said, with this really excited and expectant look on his face, “so you know that we’re famous??” And I was like “ofc, you’re Naoto-san and Tosaka-san from sjsb right?” I didn’t mention that Ryuji was my favourite because I thought Naoto would get depressed and dramatic like how he got for the 2015 Jsoul Xmas special.

We all walked pass a Japanese family watching H&L on a small TV, and Gun was on the screen. Naoto said “oh, there’s our show!” and the Japanese dad turned and said “yeah it’s H&L.” But the show changed to a documentary on a Japanese female tatooist who did Ukiyo-e inspired tattoo designs on puppy dogs.

So, this topic of art led Naoto to show us his own artworks, and we sat at a table looking at it. I said, “Sigh, that must be nice. Here I am with an arts degree but I’m going nowhere with it. What’s the point.” And Naoto very passionately encouraged me to pursue my dreams! I was extremely moved, but at the same time I was thinking, “so is it a good time yet to ask whether they know where Ryuji is so I can go meet him too...?”

As it turns out, Ryuji was standing next to a merry-go-round in the LDH theme park, and he was wearing a LINE bear mascot costume. However, he was holding up the top half of it while cheering and dancing around like he was super excited. For some reason he was shirtless and had a scar on his left ribcage that looked like a gunshot wound, but in the dream, he always had had a scar there so I just thought “oh, there’s that scar”. So Ryuji kept on laughing and cheering and dancing and I watched him, thinking, “wtf are you doing Ryuji? Stop that so I can come talk to you.” But I was also thinking, “Ryuji, whatever you’re doing, you’re fucking adorable.”

And then I woke up.
